That is a good question. No, place the bamboo when the water is NOT hot (right after you pour water into the skillet), and then bring water to a boil. Once it starts boiling, then reduce the flame to low and continue to cook until you've reached your total steaming time you need.

Better to use a pot with a rim extender for the steamer instead of using a skillet to steam your food and damage the bottom of the bamboo basket.
It is surprising to me that the video says to use a skillet or wok.... using a shallow skillet or deeper wok means your bamboo basket will be sitting IN the water when it should be sitting ABOVE the water which is what the rim extender does.... elevates the basket out of the water.
Using a pot will give you plenty of room for water to fully cook your food without evaporating and scorch your bamboo basket or skillet/wok..
Using the rim extender will keep your bamboo basket stable so it does not tip over, off the pot.
The rim extender can be purchased separately or as part of the set...bamboo baskets, lid and rim extender.
Enjoy using your steamer... it is better than the microwave for re-heating leftovers!

Thank you!!!!!!!! I was gifted one of these by my sister-in-law. Who knows that I love some of these steams? Sticky rice desserts that are in banana leaves. So she bought me one of these for my birthd. Absolutely no idea how to use it. And I thought that it was missing heart. I thought they would be apart on the bottom. That you could put on the stove or something. However, I used it for the first time and I have one. That is exactly like the one in this video. However, it is now very dark bamboo on one side, LOL. Because I burned it by placing it directly on the Eye. II had a blonde moment for sure. This was the most easy uncomplicated video on how to use the steamer. R that I have watched. Thank you for making until Arab people can understand it easily. You just won my subscription, thank you.

Also, you keep any nice juices that come from the fish. I got some nice little stoneware containers from the pound shop which are very cheap and totally heatproof

Thank you! I found a bamboo steamer at Savers (5 dollars) and passed it up. After seeing this, I went back for it. Broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. All of it came out perfectly. I also used the bottom to reheat chicken. It was better than the microwave that's for sure. Thank you for turning me on to bamboo steaming. I also really love the music in this video. One question though... Is it normal for the water to turn green?

Hello...Glad you got sold on the bamboo steamer as it is a very healthy way to cook. I am happy that I was able to convince you. Did the water turn green while you were cooking the veggies or chicken? I think it would be from the veggies...

Randomly Sammy sounds like a very healthy and delicious meal! Veggies do not need much time for steaming, usually steam between 5-10 minutes, depending on the vegetable, so be careful not to over steam, especially if you slice your vegetables thinly.

Hi and thank you so much for making this video! Quick question: do you have any recommendations for a good bamboo steamer or brand of bamboo steamers? It seems like a lot of them have not so great reviews online, and as a beginner I'd like to get one that will last a long time

    • @yinandyangliving
      @yinandyangliving  4 роки тому +1

that is a very good question. I do not know the brands cause I've had my steamer for a long time. Perhaps not get the cheapest one, nor the most expensive one. I paid like $20 for mine and it has lasted awhile.

    I appreciate the video.
Just note to people who know how to measure, or maybe dont...that pan you are using is 2-3" deep, you did not have 2-3" of water in it, it was more like 1/2-3/4" which makes sense, but anyone actually putting 2-3" of water in a pan like that...well, its not going to be good and the water might be up in to the first layer of your steamer as well, and might boil over the sides of the pan.
2-3 centimeters is closer to what I think you meant, which is about 3/4 to 1-1/4 inch, but I would say you were using more like 1.5 centimeters deep of water, which is about 3/4".
1/2-3/4" should be perfect and should not boil dry in 10 minutes which is very typical time for dumplings when the temperature is reduced to medium after the water is boiling.
I just made my first Shumai dumplings with the metal steamer I have...I may never make another kind of dumpling again, so much easier than worrying about closing the wonton and sealing it. Using a steamer basket like this may increase how many I can steam at one time, but I need to measure my steamer and compare. I steamed 12 dumplings in one layer and there was no bad effect from using the stainless steel...just spray the stainless steamer pan (not a steamer basket, but a steamer/double boiler type pan) with a little oil and it cleans right up and can go in the dishwasher too if desired.
