A very important background that foreigners might miss is that "the building" is not just talking about a whole world to a man, but also a huge solid structure of the country. Yes only as a Chinese can you intuitively feel this. The "medicine factory" is a symbolization that actually represents all the state-owned businesses, which once fed so many people and even became a faith saying "the business would live steadily forever" / "our country would live steadily and hopefully forever". But in the 90s' society, some changes happened, and many many of these state-owned businesses were forced to change their strategy. They had to tighten their expense, they had to cut down low-profit manufacturers. A lot of people lost their jobs, and even worse, their faith was smashed. And when all these shocks and muddles flood into mind, "ten thousand horses" run. This is somehow similar to Detroit's sufferings in the economic crisis starting in 2009, but even sadder, it described the sorrow of those bound to the fate of the whole nation, "collapse" together with the mother country.
    -----

I cry when I listen to this song everytime. "The builiding" is not just bricks, but also everything we believed is solid and unchangeable. He lost his job, his marriage, his life, and his faith. That is the deep meaning of "until the building collapsed". There's no way to really defend his life because things change no matter what. This is the dilemma of that era. Same stories repeat. Sorry for ourselves.

Just found out about this video. So glad to see someone doing this to promote good music from China. I've been to one of OYS shows in 2009. The moment I realized that Er Qian, the lead guitar was playing SRV for soundcheck, I knew they had something. Back then they are not that famous yet (it was before they released their first album), and they are known for adding unique improvisation for the same song on different venues. The duo of guitar and bass sometimes reminds me of Lennon and McCartney, one writes deep and powerful lyrics, one writes beautiful melody. They are still evolving and I have good hope that they will keep releasing better and better stuff in the future. Again, so glad to see someone doing reviews on music from China. Please keep doing this!

I think there is a word for this song that can make it easier for foreigners to understand its meaning:“Farce”.The fate of many people in the previous generation was forced to change with the reform, but they had no choice but to suppress their inner thoughts. So there was this form of music, which broke out in the seemingly absurd picture and depressed accompaniment.Lin Yutang said a word in My Country and My People:"Life is a huge farce, and we human beings are mere puppets in it.The man who takes life too seriously, who obeys library reading-room rules too honestly, who actually keeps off the lawn because merely a signboard says so,always make a fool of himself and is usually subjected to laughter from his older colleagues, and since laughter is contagious, very soon he becomes a humorist, too."This is the
"gray humor"that belongs to China people alone.

On one hand, there was a sudden and sometimes complete loss of income; on the other hand, there was the psychological shock of those who were once considered the "Ruling class of the nation" now being reduced to unemployed individuals.
The background video you chose is from the movie 钢的琴 ("The Steel piano)" which is also a masterpiece depicting the same historical period. In the drama, the male protagonist is also an unemployed worker struggling to gain custody of his child after divorcing his wife, who remarried to a wealthy man. Unable to afford a piano,as a unemployed steel worker, he crafts a piano made of steel for his child, as the literal translation of 钢的琴 in Chinese means "a musical instrument(piano) made of steel."

The title of the Chinese song translates into English as "Kill that Shijiazhuang man." Shijiazhuang is the capital of Hebei Province, and it is interesting that the three words "Shi Jia Zhuang" translate into English as "rock home town". Might be awesome if a follow up video is needed after this one. Their 2nd album is even more complicated, not just on lyrics but the arrangement of the instruments as well as the song writings.

You can imagine their panic feeling when the companies were sold or bankrupted.

it's quite surprising to see you explain this song for a whole video; as a Shijiazhuang local, I can explain a little bit from our point of view. When I was a kid, my parents, same as everyone, worked in factories. My mom was in Huabei Zhiyao, which was the largest pharmaceutical factory for penicillin production in Asia. Factories like this under the socialist background provides very good living condition. The factory, as an enterprise, builds apartments for workers, shuttle buses for transportation, they have their own kindergartens and schools, and even hospitals. so everyone was living a peaceful and happy live. and the building collapsed, representing the reform and opening wave in China. some people left to make more money for their own, and things started to change; the factories gradually broke because they could not maintain their market under the new situation, and people had no choice but to leave the jobs that they worked for their lives. it was basically a scenario for the whole northeast land in china. we can hear the instrument crying here. but there's no choice for these ppl, u can only embrace the destiny.
