I prefer bedspreads to duvets and quilts, and I've been buying king size for years because the industry has made these items smaller over the years (no doubt to save production costs). I do the same thing with blankets. I with you on this. I have a good-sized bedroom, and I have a cedar chest at the foot of the bed in which I keep be and bath linens. And it definitely gets used as seating too. I also have a small easy chair and ottoman in a reading nook. (I'm quite short, so a diminutive chair works for me.) I use it pretty much every day. A comfy chair in the bedroom helps make the room a sanctuary.
Could you be so kind to explain for non-americans/non-native-speakers what's the difference between a duvet and a blanket? I googled, but i dont get it.
@@nanamuskuri6630A duvet is a fabric envelope with stuffing, ideally down or feathers, but can be any sort of "filling" if you envision the whole thing as a sandwich sealed on all sides. Sometimes called a comforter, it commonly has drawn over it another decorative fabric envelope which can be taken off and washed often or replaced with another differently patterned or colored one. This is called a duvet cover. A blanket is a flat piece of fabric with no stuffing and no need of such a thing, being commonly of warmer stuff or thicker fabric. Wool, say, instead of finer weave cotton or linen or silk, which duvet covers are usually made of. I hope this helps. By the way, many Americans don't know these different things any more than you. They are considered girlish and unmasculine, or beneath one's notice by many folks, even those who have them on their own beds.
@@susanprendergast7384 thank you so very much! "blanket" was for me the universal word for the cover to put over yourself when you sleep. So in my country it's kind of normal to have a duvet, that's why I didn't get the difference! Thanks again for taking the time to explain ♥️
Thank you for pointing out the acrylic organizers! As they are being showcased in so many channels, I felt like I was the only one that felt that way. YES for chairs in the bedroom. I am blessed with a large room and the bed is very uncomfortable for me when I am reading or sketching or onlining..............Thank you Nick! I agree with everything in this video. Due to expense I couldn't afford to buy new bedding years ago. So I used the King sized covering I had on a twin! I got lost in the bed, 'in a good way'!
I too have been purchasing king sized quilts for my queen sized bed purely for the health of our relationship. I have a partner that rolls like a hot cinnabon, i NEED that extra quilt 😂 And also because I live in a rental and not in my home country so its easier to hide 4 large suitcases under bed with that quilt
I rent a two bedroom condo with wall to wall carpeting. I have an area rug in the living room which I plan on switching to the master bedroom when I find one I like for the living room. I also want one for the dining area. I hate not having hardwood floors but to make the beige wall to wall kind of disappear, I really love area rugs.
Yep, the good ol' Cpap has a place next to the bed too! It doesn't exactly scream luxury.. it's more like, "Oh goody, I get to sleep next Mrs. Vader"! As my husband likes to say. 😅
You have so many great ideas plus once again your sense of humor was on fire. You are so witty. I always get great advice and an lol while watching your videos. 😂
I work a lot harder on decorating the shared living spaces in my home & neglect the bedroom as a designed space. Kind of funny, my husband is the opposite, he will leave the living or dining room more cluttered or messy, than our room. Combined- we clean and take care of all the spaces 😊. I am inspired to work a bit more with the bedroom design. Thanks for sharing your opinions - and facts. Let’s face it - they’re were a lot of facts shared here.
Hubby and I each have our own queen comforters on our queen bed :) Interestingly enough, speaking of closets, my hubby and adult kid were talking, and them saying they'd prefer armoires or wardrobes to a closet. I already use an armoire for some of my things, and I love it. Small condo, very little closet space... the armoire fits inside an alcove just perfectly :)
There IS a duvet solution for a king! It's called super king or western king and they measure 120×120"!! You won't find them off the shelves in bedding stores, however Amazon or Etsy is the solution! Just got one on Prime Day with a new down comforter measuring the same and it's a game changer!
Could you please do a video on rug sizes and placements? How big should a bedroom rug be? Should it always go under the bed? What about an open plan with living and dining in the same room?
You are so funny Nick and very entertaining. I have people look at me strange on the train when I suddenly laugh out loud watching you! Great videos and design tips! Keep up the good work.

Just a tip if you live in an earthquake zone like me, please use canvas art or something light weight like a patterned rug, macrame or whatever hung above your bed in case it falls during a quake. Glass pictures with frames are going to fall and break your face. I have put nails on both sides of the pictures so when things start moving they won't go side to side, but lets be honest when your iron becomes a projectile you need to run. Since Nick lives in Vancouver he should be well aware of the need for this even though it isn't like LA with a quake every month. The big one is now due in the Pacific Northwest.
HI Nick. I just have to say, what a great guy you are. This is the first time I've ever seen one of your videos and I really enjoyed your humorous, yet practical approach. I'm-a gonna go watch the living room one now... 🤗
Polarising age-old design conflicts such as rug over carpet etc might be a good idea for a future video and discussions. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
Wonderful tips Nick! I've been doing the king blanket and quilt on a queen bed for years (we have a high queen bed) and love the draped look and feel it brings to my space. I also have framed art over the bed and on adjacent walls. Also have a lot of textures, throw blanket, accent pillows, waffle bed blanket, quilting, carpet, and floor to ceiling linen draperies (a must have for a lux look). I do have enough room for a end of bed bench and a sitting chair. But I do think the room would benefit by ditching the chair, so I'm thinking that over. I recently purged and reorganized my closet (what a game changer when you're getting ready every morning) and need to install my puck lights in there to complete that area. Since I have storage in my night stands (highly recommend them) to tame all the bedside clutter, keeping the night table for evening essentials only. All of these features create a very lux look and feel to my space, so your tips were very validating in that I seem to be on the right track. BTW, we have never had a TV in the bedroom, as we want it to be a peaceful and relaxing place. Thanks again for the video, keep up the great work!
Nick, you continue to provide excellent ideas and food for thought in home decor. But the real reason I continue to watch your show is your sharp sense of humour mixed with a soupcon of attitude and self deprecation. Clearly, you know your stuff and let us know that if we want to hold onto that novel wooden spoon rack with enameled spoons from every national park in the country, we should just have at it! Your tone and expression are flawless. Thank you! (I don't have any spoons to display.)
Thank you Nick for bringing so much joy AND personality to decorating. My home flooded and as I’ve been packing up to move out for the redo, it’s been so motivating to listen/watch you - been through all your videos, thanks for the company and inspiration!
My old queen-size cream quilt bedspread fit like a too-short pair of pants so I upsized to a king-size cream quilt bedspread. But because the two mattresses combined were still too thick, even the king-size bedspread wasn't enough. Sooooo, I placed the old bedspread between the two mattresses and the new bedspread on top. Voila! An American solution to Chinese sizing! Sometimes, you just have to think outsided the zippered bag!
Exactly, I have a cal king and it’s hard finding anything to aesthetically covers the mattress because of the thickness. If I don’t use a bed skirt (hard to find a good fit for the height of my bed frame) I put a comforter on the bed frame and the mattress on top. Works well for me.
@@chrism9294 Isn't it interesting that, nowadays, nothing normal fits. People have vehicles too large for shrinking garages. Clothes on Amazon have to be labelled "True to size" because, apparently, size doesn't matter to the manufacturers. People are getting more obese even as airplane seats get smaller. Gosh, I thought stuff like this wasn't supposed to happen in capitalism. LOL
I had a yellow bedroom: awful (too hot, too stimulating. I found a saturated medium blue I love and added white (making it a TINT- thank you, Nick!) and it’s gorgeous. Not a pale blue, but a blue with personality. ❤ it!!!

When can we get a full tour/view of your space. I’ve loved and have watched you for a few years now and really only get to see a styled corner every time. Would love to see how you incorporate your many tips in your own home!
No shade, LOVE you Nick; but he always seems to be OVER a design style/decor/colors and suggests that things he recomended two months ago are now starting to feel outdated.
Their job is to sell the idea of an ideal home. But I agree, an ideal home isn't filled with branches and lamps. It's honestly where you feel most comfortable
Your videos are addicting, I'm sitting there absorbing the info and then you make me laugh too!!! Its a twofer! I have a little corner in my bedroom for a wing chair, away from where my husband works in his home office. I close the door and have many phone conversations there without disturbing him. So glad i have that chair in there!
Thanks to you, I invested in really good towels and sheets (from Brooklinen) and I went nuts buying rugs. After my cheap new flooring got dings in the first few days, i layered different rugs all over throughout my tiny home, nowhere us it more plush then around the bed. I consider the ability to walk around cleanly barefooted on soft carpets to be the ultimate luxury.
I went from a king to queen bed. I was not going to part with my king pillows so I kept my king size comforter and shams. It looks so much better than it did on the king bed! It definitely does make the bed look more expensive.
One last comment on the bedroom… It’s desaturated. It’s warm. It’s relaxing. It’s clutter-free. My bed is anchored with a nice rug. The first thing I do when I get out of bed in the morning is MAKE MY BED! There is a great video on UA-cam of a “5 Star ⭐️ General,” I believe, giving a commencement speech. It’s a must-see as ALL of @NickLewis videos are must-sees! As I still “work from home,” (I won’t give the point of the speech away), it’s an important step in starting your day! Have great days all! 😊
Great idea on the duvet cover, esp. with so many queen-size bed items actually "full/queen." Orienting the bed contrary to expectations(running parallel to the narrower measurement of the space) can make the space look a lot larger by opening up floor space.
Yes, read the dimensions of several items and measure what you have, then give it a good think. I got a so-called quilt I use with a dust ruffle to hide what is under my bed because it was cheaper than the so-called bedspread from the same company with the same pattern choices. If I were to go back in time I would look at what the larger quilt cost plus dust ruffle vs the smaller size bedspread. I might make a different choice. And yes, try orienting the bed and furniture different ways, preferably before hanging things on the wall. It might surprise you. I have tried mine in three ways, due to noisy neighbors who no longer live there, and each has its own plus and minus.
I 100% agree with the upsizing the bedding for your bed works. I have always done this. In the UK, I feel you never have enough to be comfortably warm in bed if you have a double/king bed and duvet. Plus it looks soo much better when the bed is made up and its a great place to add some colour to the room and give it character as I stay natural on the walls/floor.
A deep-night colour is an option I prefer for bedroom walls. Presently I have a deep chocolate ganache, but also have used navy blue, hunter green and charcoal gray to near black. Never got around to trying purple, but that would be interesting as would red. The outer space-like darkness is great for deep. Light absorbing ceiling paint in deep-shades much darker than builder's white also helps to create a near light-free environment. Other than perhaps a library/den I wouldn't do the rest of the rooms that way, but I love my cave-like bedroom.
Recently painted my room from yellow and orange (from the last tenant) to cream and a rust accent wall. So much more peaceful and elevated. This video is now making me think about a rug though!
I once rented a bedroom in a beautiful beach house and it has been painted the most beautiful deep blue. I loved it so much I had white bedding and drapes, it was awesome. Now I’ve got boho with a muted pink and natural tones. Love it too.
Great tips! I am one of those people with brighter walls (Benjamin Moore Wildflower)! 😮 I love the crisp neat contrast with the white woodwork. We also have lots of window to break it up. A rug with pale beige, light bleu and pink with a touch of Navy tones the color down and give me a ton of accent options throughout the year! Have a great week! 😊
I downsized from king to queen several years ago, and kept all my king blankets and comforters. For one thing, I still loved them. And it was hella cheaper to keep 'er than buying all new bedding.
That bed situation on the right at 3:19 is the most incredible thing that I've ever seen and I need to know what it is and how I can look it up and order one right now
As always, thank you for the great tips--but also for the chuckles along the way. I always get a kick out of your funny comments and asides. Thank you, thank you!

Love your point about color saturation 👍🏻 I bought a house that had a deep green accent wall in the bedroom. It made me uncomfortable. I’ve always been pleased with green walls, so I opted to paint the entire room a soft & luminous green. What a lovely difference!
This is my goal. A programmable thermostat so my bedroom is the perfect temperature for sleeping every night of the year, and a simple machine-washable cotton waffle weave blanket or two that will be all the warmth I need. Pile the insulation on the walls, not on the bed!
I've been doing the "king on a queen bed" duvet/comforter thing for YEARS. Lots of draping, plus I have a cast-iron bed frame, and I put my bed at an angle in a corner, so the damn pillows ALWAYS fell on the floor. Not anymore. I bought king-sized pillows for the shams, and they stay in place and keep the bed pillows from falling through the headboard. And it looks hella good! I also have a designated seating area with a fireplace (totally sexy!) where I have an overstuffed loveseat & two ottomans. Lots of textures, lots of warmth. And no, I am not Gwyneth. I live in Ohio, and having a humongous house is doable here!
On a budget such a thing is totally possible here in Ohio even in the big cities. But, "Shh!" don't be telling people how cheap it is to live here or they'll all want to move here and the cost of living will be jacked up sky-high. Just keep telling them how uncool it is here, how totally not chic.

Have a great weekend all! 👍👎
Yeah, I was afraid he was going to say to take it out. I'd just have to say no, sorry to that.
very good tips on king duvet on queen mattress. i really love the idea. will apply to my airbnb .
I agree about the size, I have a queen duvet on my dbl bed and there's barely any overhang, might go up to a king!
@@nanamuskuri6630 You're welcome. I was told I was a pretty good explainer years ago, so I enjoy it
I’ve been purchasing king sized comforters and blankets for my queen sized bed forever! My preference, as well!
I totally agree about the duvet! I downsized from a queen to a double and I use my queen duvet and I love it 😍
I too have been purchasing king sized quilts for my queen sized bed purely for the health of our relationship. I have a partner that rolls like a hot cinnabon, i NEED that extra quilt 😂
And also because I live in a rental and not in my home country so its easier to hide 4 large suitcases under bed with that quilt
@ 4:51 LOL!!!! I enjoy your videos and all your ideas, but absolutely loooooove your subtle sense of humor,.
I appreciate how you always acknowledge the actual budget the average person is working with.
love the painting in "add a rug"
I rent a two bedroom condo with wall to wall carpeting. I have an area rug in the living room which I plan on switching to the master bedroom when I find one I like for the living room. I also want one for the dining area. I hate not having hardwood floors but to make the beige wall to wall kind of disappear, I really love area rugs.
This is such a fine blend of decorating tips and stand up comedy!
10:27 This is where I keep my CPAP machine 😂😅
I did place it on a decorative tray.
To be fair, those things are expensive! Who else has a $1K accessory on their night stand 😅
Yep, the good ol' Cpap has a place next to the bed too! It doesn't exactly scream luxury.. it's more like, "Oh goody, I get to sleep next Mrs. Vader"! As my husband likes to say. 😅
Lol, yes...if you want your room to look nice...clean it! So glad you included this! 😂
You have so many great ideas plus once again your sense of humor was on fire. You are so witty. I always get great advice and an lol while watching your videos. 😂
I never thought of oversized duvets. Thank you
I work a lot harder on decorating the shared living spaces in my home & neglect the bedroom as a designed space.
"I'm probably not gonna be there". Good one, Nick. Got a big laugh out of me.
Please do bathroom next and then kitchen! 😍 this is a great series
Both fold in half and side by side .....🇩🇰
There IS a duvet solution for a king! It's called super king or western king and they measure 120×120"!! You won't find them off the shelves in bedding stores, however Amazon or Etsy is the solution! Just got one on Prime Day with a new down comforter measuring the same and it's a game changer!
Thanks for the info!
Could you please do a video on rug sizes and placements? How big should a bedroom rug be? Should it always go under the bed? What about an open plan with living and dining in the same room?
Yes to this. The rug thing is so confusing!
Thanks Nick . I would add smells. Nothing ruins a room more than a musty dusty odour or a scent that is so strong even the animals wont go in.
Back in the 60s my dad had my Beatles and Stones posters framed for me! I loved it!
You are so funny Nick and very entertaining. I have people look at me strange on the train when I suddenly laugh out loud watching you! Great videos and design tips! Keep up the good work.
Wow Nick, you were on a tear here. As always, great ideas and suggestions. I went back to my own bedroom after the video...actually looked pretty good according to your advice. Thanks again
I think my bedroom looks a little cheap. I needed this video. Too glam, too pink. 🤷♀️💕
I love bright colors, but I tend to go for softer colors to help promote the feeling of rest so lighter or desaturated colors make sense to me.
Yes! Sizing up on the duvet helps to minimize fighting over the covers, too.
Great advice, as always! I hope this day brings you JOY as you've brought joy (with a wee bit of snark) to all of us!
I went for navy blue for my bedroom and it makes it feel so calming and cosy. Doesn't make the room feel small either
Similar.. succulent by sw.
I’ve been using a kind comforter on my queen bed for years and I love it! It makes for such a cozy feel.
It also makes it easier for two people--one is less likely to steal all the covers. :)
1:53 we have a superking on top of a king. It’s lovely! As well as a king on top of a queen in the quest room. Highly recommended.
Why you don’t have millions of followers yet is beyond me…………I’m sure you will in the future. You’re the best!
Great fix! Congrats to you!!!
I sized down and had a pile of moving quilts. I store them under my mattress, making it a bit taller and firmer.
❤ it!!!
4:48 I like saturated colors in the rest of the house but I chose to do desaturated colors in my bedroom because it is more relaxing, which i think is important
❤The Bedroom is my favourite room
When can we get a full tour/view of your space. I’ve loved and have watched you for a few years now and really only get to see a styled corner every time. Would love to see how you incorporate your many tips in your own home!
YES! Lol I agree!
No shade, LOVE you Nick; but he always seems to be OVER a design style/decor/colors and suggests that things he recomended two months ago are now starting to feel outdated.
It's because his house is not a home, it's a set. I can never be happy chasing the trends and making sure it's in style. comfort is key
One last comment on the bedroom…
It’s desaturated.
Even in small bedrooms benches are great if they can double as storage! Great for blankets or shoes!
@@653j521You can still buy dust ruffles?
Why do I love Nick so?!! Your personality is so fun!!!!
You are so spot on and so funny! Love the tipps and your confidence . My absolute favourite design channel! A big fan. Thank you!!!
Loved my purple-based red with dark purple accents. Currently have a dark purple with gray & white accents. Love it!
Love 😂, love 😂, love 😂your sense of humor! Thank you for sharing your wonderful tips!
I recently upgraded to track lighting to my closet, it was a game changer
Thank you for making me laugh. You are a tonic, I like your suggestion and that you don't dictate.
Great ideas! Love your humor! You make me laugh with your candid comments! I am in the middle of a total home remodel (yikes) and scooped up some good styling ideas from you! So glad I found you! Thanks, Nick!
Love your point about color saturation 👍🏻 I bought a house that had a deep green accent wall in the bedroom. It made me uncomfortable. I’ve always been pleased with green walls, so I opted to paint the entire room a soft & luminous green. What a lovely difference!
Coverlets for life. Way easier to launder and no shifting filling.
This is my goal. A programmable thermostat so my bedroom is the perfect temperature for sleeping every night of the year, and a simple machine-washable cotton waffle weave blanket or two that will be all the warmth I need. Pile the insulation on the walls, not on the bed!
One of my favorite channels!
I totally agree with this approach and happy to have done it the "right" way!
Thx!
Tips for having a nice place: clean! Lol thanks Nick.
Finally having a wardrobe with doors really did change my life.
@@susanprendergast7384 LOL! My bad! It's totally uncool to live here...not chic at all!
I don't follow ppl on UA-cam but I came looking for ideas for my mom bedroom found your video I couldn't help it but to follow you I just love your attitude and you are so on point with everything just love this thanks for your video and it's also my first time even commenting I really enjoyed looking at this and looking forward to seeing more 😉
I put a chair in my bedroom and added a throw and a nice pillow. One day I threw a sweatshirt that I had been wearing onto the chair and my dog immediately claimed the chair and the sweatshirt! Everytime I grab the sweatshirt to wash it, my dog gives me the evil eye until I return it to the chair! Yes, my 5.5 lb dog rules my house.
I get it ! Color coordinating blanket across the foot of the bed for one of my small dogs - she likes the window view & also cool breeze during her nap time . What we do for love ... 🐾🐾💙
I've done sizing up for years. Not for style but because I love huge blankets to wrap up in. Lol
This is one of the most enjoyable of your wonderful videos. I laughed my way through, along with learning a few things. 😊 Thank you!
Im binge-watching your videos for weeks now! I’m learning a lot! Thank God I found your channel, for someone who’s about to build her dream home! 😃 I am about to pay my building permit on Monday which was just approved by the engineering department yesterday! Yaaaasss!!! So excited! 😃🥰🥰🏡🪚🛠️🪜
I have a seating area in my large bedroom and i never sit there so you got that right for sure. But also, as you said, it looks inviting to have a nice place to sit. Great tips.
Hey we listen to you because we respect your professional opinion, love your style! I’m inspired
Love your videos. So glad that you share your light.
Always great content. I would also add - upgrade all the face plates throughout the room. This goes a long way!
Oh my God, I love love love you!! Always bang on, and motivating, Thank you Nick! (ok, I'm going to tidy up now-ish)
Great tips, Nick! May I add to your list one or two big plants and definitely curtains. Love your video.
We have the tiniest bedroom - no really, tiny. We live in a tiny house on wheels - and when we designed our bedroom all of these things you've spoken about here were non-negotiables (sans the chair, who knew?!) and we love it.
A king duvet in a queen cover on a queen bed is so fluffy and elite!
