  • Thinking of buying a Fiat 500 or an Abarth 595? Want to know what the most common faults are? This video will go through in plain English what the faults are, how to check them and if you're in the market for a 500, give you a bit of bargaining power if you find these faults on your prospective purchase.
    I use Elbow Grease to clean almost everything. It's amazing stuff and is really cheap.

    Great video. Gives anybody thinking of buying one a heads up on some of the more common faults too look out for. I have seen the corroded nuts on top of the struts on quite a few modern cars. Makes a relatively easy job into a real pain in the --se. Wasnt aware of the top covers thats a good idea thanks for sharing. Rich

    Great informative video. Just been to look at a 10 year old Twin Air Plus model. Some of the common issues have been done (front shocks replaced and nuts now covered in grease rather than caps, and rear hatch wiring been repaired). A smashing little runaround car so bought it on the spot thanks to your info 👍

    Great video - excellent! The clutch pipe connector sits on the chassis rail next to the nearside front strut. Its position is so exposed the brass push-fit becomes impacted with crud/salt and they can split! Replaced the master and slave together last year (10 plate).
    Passenger door handle done, and rear tailgate wiring harness had to be fettled too.
    Rear taligate release handle suffers from water ingress and the whole chrome strip incorporating the numbef plate lights needs to be changed.
    Rear axle spring cups are corroding but not an MoT failure.....YET.
    Keep up the great work on the videos.

    I bought my '12, USA FIAT 500 from a used car dealer in 2020. It had 124,300 miles on the Multiair engine. Manual transmission. One right away issue was the hatch wiring. I fixed all the chafed & broken wires best I could & left it alone. I don't use any of (turn them on) the items the wires supply electricity to (wiper or window def.). I put on a universal license plate light & all is well there. My front shocks are exposed as in this video but rust free. I'll give 'em more scrutiny after this video, put some grease on 'em. My brake/clutch cylinders haven't given me any problems & doesn't leak. The pass. side door handle is tight as can be, very little play in it. The driver's side has a little more play in it but is not broken at all. My instrument panel will flash on & off a little bit here & there (I've read that each year has different problems) upon start up (more with cold weather) but works normally after that. I'm in my 4th year of owning the 500, nothing has really gone wrong, & I'm replacing all the wear & tear items as I roll along.

    Thanks for all this. I am a new Fiat owner, not a new car just new to this brand. I bought it to tow behind my Class B camper. It is light and they make a lot of equipment for that purpose. I live in Oklahoma so the water problem you have over there will not be a factor here. Hot & dry. One problem we have with any car is headlight cover deterioration, solar radiation causes them to cloud up. I have been sanding them with 600 grit WD paper then spraying on a layer of clear coat. Lasts for years. Your video gives me information on what to watch for. I found a 2012 W/ 94K miles that is in very good shape and it is white, white is important here. Again, thanks.

    Hi Paul as usual Great, informative advise, your general content and with these common issues with our 500s🙄
    The one you mentioned about checking the oil cap, its not always necessarily a head gasket issue ,these cars can suffer from engine condensation build up in the cold of winter with the sudden stop start temperature changes can cause the gunk build up you mentioned, my abarth does or at least did as we recently moved and my car is garaged now☺ so its clear now as its sheltered.
    I think headgasket failure leans more towards overheating on a test drive, heater not getting hot, coolant in the oil or on the dipstick, oil mixed in coolant expansion tank, an a very excessive build up of emulsified oil and coolant, also worth checking the breather system pcv valve for build up of gunk or for internal rust corrosion if so replace it Another on the abarth, sticking or seized calliper slider pins particularly the rear, this causes foot, hand brake imbalance, uneven pad wear, the inner pad can stick also scoring on the disc's and in worse case the piston can also seize, all the callipers slider pins need to be checked annually to prevent this and unnecessary expense of replacement!
    Premature underside rust is another, rub down with wire brush or drill attachment then apply direct to rust metal paint will help slow the rust process down and always looks good come mot time
    Also these cars are very sensitive to the slightest voltage drop so of the battery is a bit dicky it will throw up all sorts of electrical warning issues when all it needs is a new battery which should always be your 1st port of call before panicking and delving deep as this will generally cure the issues ,I'm sure you know yourself are aware of some of these I've mentioned but hopefully will help some of your subscribers ! if I think of any others I'll add them .
    🙂👍

    Just found both of those drain holes completely blocked on a 17 plate Abarth with standing water in the tray around them. The only reason I happened to notice that was because my front windscreen wipers stopped working yesterday and, when I removed the scuttle panel to access the wiper motor, I noticed the standing water in there. I also had the broken rear hatch wiring issue, which I fixed a couple of months ago. The car also had a lambda sensor fail about a year ago.

      US cars are made in Mexico and European ones are made in Poland. Different spec. I don’t think US cars have a 1.2 or Twinair. All 1.4 i believe.

      @@Love500 Ah I see. I've just now being watching youtube videos on it and immediatly noticed those from the U.S were suggesting dubious reliabilty. Which I found strange. Some of them were quite harsh on this car. So, without wanting to insult Mexico, maybe that's the reason? I love our 500 so much (we bought it for our teen daughter's first car) that I'm thinking of getting an Abarth for myself :-) The auto transmission is a bit funky. I change the gears in ours myself, and I can do it smoother than the auto can. So I'm looking forward to trying the manual. (Great video by the way..thank you for sharing your knowledge)

      Yours are made in Mexico although not sure whether the US Abarths are but the standard 500s do have some different parts and I think all of yours are the 1.4 whereas in UK and Europe the 1.2 is more common. • @Love500
      @Love500  3 роки тому

      I would be very surprised if there wasn't a code stored somewhere. What are you using to read codes? I would expect MultiECUScan to show something as an intermittent fault. It's a possibility your cambelt is a tooth out, but I don't think that would be intermittent. If it was 180 degrees out, the car wouldn't start. It's probably more likely something has been disturbed and not plugged back in properly during the cambelt change. I would recommend MES for diagnostics rather than a generic scanner. Even a quality one wouldn't be as comprehensive as MES.

    • @Love500
      @Love500  2 роки тому +1

      It depends where you are as price is affected by location. A non cat car, you would probably be looking at around £2,500 ish. If you bought one under £2k it would no doubt have high miles but there are the odd little gems out there. I would go for something a bit newer if you can. Only plus point in the older ones is the regular parts that wear out, like suspension components have probably already been changed but with a car 2008, they might well need doing again. Look at the .gov website if you are in the UK and enter the registration number of a car you are interested in, search for MoT history from within .gov and you can see any failures and what they failed on and also advisories. If you can see something that was an advisory and then no longer is, chances are they had it done. Try and get one with a service history so you can see exactly how it's been looked after. Hope that helps.

    • @Love500
      @Love500  2 роки тому

      Yes, it’s a common fault. It’s the speedo. They can be repaired but it’s easier and cheaper to replace with a used one. Get one from the same sort of age car. There are variations, I.e. start/stop and non start/stop. You can up the mileage using MultiECUScan but can’t reduce it. There’s a fella on the Fiat 500 Owners Club Facebook page called Chris CFC Fisher who sells them preprogrammed to the mileage you want for £150. Otherwise have a look on eBay.
