  • Joel Embiid of the NBA Philadelphia 76ers has been dealing with another knee injury and was recently spotted wearing a unique style knee brace. There is some speculation this brace could mean he has arthritis, so in this video i'll explain how this brace works and why his history of previous injuries could raise the possibility of more damage in the knee!

    This is a revision of the initially posted video in case you saw it earlier. Essentially it was pointed out to me by a viewer (please comment so i can credit you!) that i was misunderstanding the brace in terms of which side it was trying to unload. This does actually change things and so I felt it was necessary to correct the video to make sure you all have the right info!! thanks!

    As far as I remember the initial plan was to repair the menismus in Embiid´s knee. When they opened him they decided against that because the tear was really small. They said the definitely would have done the repair because they wanted to preserve his long term health and the surgery was in the off season anyway.
    My question now is: Don´t you think they would have done a repair when the resection would lead this early to arthritis? Just from all the reporting it seems that the rear was SO minor that decided against a repair and because of that the risk of arthritis wouldn´t be that high. Of course you can´t foresee everything but as cautious the team was with him during that time, I think they 100 % would have done a repaif if there were any doubts with the size of the tear.
    I hope you answer, really interesting channel,keep up the good work.

    • @BrianSuttererMD
      @BrianSuttererMD  5 років тому +1

      At the time the benefit of cleaning up the mensiscus outweighed long term risk of other issues. You can't really fault the docs for that decision. They know very well that taking out part of meniscus increases risk of arthritis but if the player can't even play without the surgery then it's worth it so they can play and make a living

    I love your videos; the concept of explaining sports injuries with anatomy lessons and treatment is brilliant. One suggestion is for you to increase your use of anatomy props. When you mention meniscus tear, I think you should have some kind of knee anatomy prop to indicate exactly what the meniscus is, along with the other knee components. Same with any other mention of anatomy, like medial compartment, etc. I know I don't have a firm visualization of most anatomy terms, and good images are much more descriptive than mere talk. If your videos combine your strong knowledge, good lighting and timely subject matter with the best anatomy props on the internet, whether lots of plastic doctor-office props or video diagrams (or both), I think you can broaden your reach and have your subs go up faster. Anatomy students and patients will find you, in addition to us sports fans.

      Too much speculation..could he bone bruise, cartilage defect, more meniscal damage just to name a few. Basically trying to get the point across that the brace isn't a 1:1 auto for arthritis but by far is most common use.

    Great video Brian. As a Sixers fan, every game, every grin, scares the hell out of me. We need him so badly and he knows that. He will play through pain. He doesn't understand or care about the effects. Maybe cause he's still young. The problem is that when he misses a couple of games to rest his knees, he gets out of shape so easily which is the problem for him cause he gains a couple lbs. He rather play injured and hurt himself than miss a game or two to rest. Lets hope for the best. Fingers crossed.

    The 76ers (and Joel Embiid himself) are describing the issue with his left knee as tendinitis. If that's the case, would it make any sense for Embiid to wear a brace like the one shown here? What function would it serve, if any? I've suffered from patellar tendinitis in the past and, from what I experienced (and what little I understand), I don't really see why this type of brace would be prescribed.
