Here in the Netherlands a certificate is nice to have but they nearly always prefer work experience. One reason is that certificates are only required if the kind of work they do can legally onlt be done by certified people, or if the company is one of those "companies" that only hire certified people because they are really hardcode. Avoid those companies.
Basically; a certificate is an objective indication that you have certain knowledge. Work experience is proof that you can do the job.
How is one switching careers going to obtain the experience? I'm trying to switch from Elec. equipment service technician to IT (first, before Cybersecurity) and I am getting IT certs to also get more knowledge but to help myself to get to IT and grow experience from there.

If youre looking for a help desk position, no you dont need any certifications, but you will be tested during your interview. Ive been in IT for 25 years, worked at large financial companies in support roles, trading desk support roles and as an automation engineer. It will help you, the further you get along in your career.
Key word Preferred not Mandatory.
The certification game has changed a lot, and also the academic thing. There are companies that prefer experience rather than a degree, and the certs are desired but no required. Of course with a degree and some entry level certs you have a better chance to start on a level I position and go from there. But once you are on the IT workforce you can focus on learning what you need with a place like Try Hack Me and jump at any opportunity your workplace might offer to move up the ladder.
It's funny you are really personable. I took your AD training and I thought you seemed very relatable. Easy to talk to. You might not be as outgoing as John Strand but that's not a bad thing. I enjoy both styles.
As with everything, it's all about nuance, for instance, i have a few certificates for JAMF (a mac MDM), so that obviously gives me an edge when the job listing is for a mac system engineer, then again, if had a candidate without those certs but I can tell they understand things quickly, i'd also say it's fine to hire.
+1 for soft skills that I wish'd I had learned 20 years ago.
