1998 is probably the most legendary year in all of gaming. A large number of games on a lot of "top X games of all times"-lists came out in 1998. Looking forward to the rest of this list!

Caesar 3 has an active community, and the Augustus mod (updates in resolution and gameplay as well) with the recently released Reconquered campaign (made by CommissarMarek) makes it a totally fresh and very challenging fun for 2024 audiences. Highly recommended.

I was still working as a video games phone retailer at this point (pre my online gaming helpdesk set up) and "Incoming: Final Conflict" was dead easy to sell and do tech support for. Sell it: The preetiest graphics around (at the time) AND tech support was solved EVERY TIME with a DirectX re-install (I ended up wrting a step by step guide that was posted out to I'd say about 60% of our tech support callers ending in no re-call/returns of the problem). This was probably the PEAK of early Windows based serious gaming, i.e. when games were starting to use facilities beyond DOS, having already shifted from DOS to Windows, to the more complicated lands of DirectX (which were ALL solved by reinstalling DirectX....(pretty much every time hence the creation of DirectX!)). Things got more compliocated from then on....to ACTUAL tech support levels :P

I loved Dune II, and thus I also very much enjoyed Dune 2000. It perhaps did not offer anything really new, but it looked and played great at (at the time) modern resolutions. The FMV sequences featuring John Rhys-Davies were also a blast to watch. I was a bit sad that I never saw anyone else talk about the game.

"If I do say so myself" is usually said by someone who is praising something they have done, in other words "it's expected that I would say that the thing I've done is good, however it is good despite the fact that you would expect me to say it is good even it were bad".

Grand Touring - I've never seen this, but watching the video, I like that the scenery in the distance (skybox?) doesn't seem as "floaty" as other early racers. It's hard to describe, but in a lot of old racing games, as you go around curves and up and down hills, the road you're driving on seems really disconnected from the scenery in the distance. Like the amount of movement is all wrong. It just doesn't look right. This one isn't perfect, but it seems pretty good for the time.
Dune 2000 - I bought a copy of this many years ago. When a local closeout store first opened up here, they used to have loads of computer games for $5 each and I bought a bunch of them. I never actually got around to playing Dune 2000 though. I'd played Dune 2 on the Amiga and basically bought it on that basis alone. I don't know if it was accurate or not, but I once read a complaint from a user saying that it was impossible to kill sandworms in this version.
Warbirds - I never saw this one, but it reminded me of something. I was once in a store, looking at their computer games and there was some combat flight simulator that could only be played online, on I think Compuserve. I knew the game had been discontinued for quite some time. As I was looking, a woman came up and picked it up, studying the back as if she was checking to see how appealing it looked. I spoke up and told her that she wouldn't be able to play it as the servers were shut down. She was looking for a game for her son, and thanked me for letting her know.

Grand Touring is actually pretty fun if you don't expect it to be anything more than it is. So, if you don't look for Gran Turismo or Screamer 2 in it, you will like it.
Dune 2000, was a great game for fans of Dune 2, but not so much for those who played more modern at the time RTSes.
I really like your Warbirds story. You're a cool dude! :)

Grand Touring is interesting. Got to say it looks quite good. I’m curious, even if it is a bit easy.
BIO F.R.E.A.K.S name just shouts late 90’s. 😄 I vaguely recall playing it 2 player with someone & thinking it wasn’t good.
DX-Ball 2 is a pretty great Arkanoid clone & if you’d like to see where that kind of game can go it’s a great game.
Damage Incorporated is frustrating, at least the team command element. If you want to know what “rage quitting” is give it a go, you’ll find out. It’s not the worst thing ever but trying to lead an NPC team can bog the game down if you let it. In other respects it’s a pretty good FPS but keep the leadership element in mind.
Last Bronx is not a bad game but it kind of gets lost in a sea of 1v1 fighters of the time. Shame really as is fun to play. Also that title is very Japanese game circa 1998, you can see what they were going for but it’s a bit off the mark. 😄
Warbirds was & is excellent… all the way up to the point they wanted a subscription from you. At that point they could f**k off.
Incoming is excellent. You get a good range of vehicles/weapons & plays great with all of them. It can seem a little hard to start with but you quickly get the hang of it. It’s a classic for a reason & also 1 to own if you’re interested in 3D accelerators of the time.
Great list, thanks. ‘98 was a great year for gaming, as we’ll see as this series goes on.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  5 місяців тому +1

Grand Touring is not a bad game at all, if you don't expect more of it than it can offer. So, if it looks good to you, chances are, you'll like playing it too. :)
I think both DX-Ball games did one thing very well, they modernised them, and packed as much action in them as it was possible without changing the formula too much.
The sub in Warbirds was just unthinkable for the time. I mean some of the MMOs today, incomparably more advanced games however you wanna look at it, have it at a similar or lower price.
Naturally, I couldn't agree more about Incoming. It's fantastic! I played on like 3 different generations of GPUs back then. So, even if it lacked something, staying power and fun it was not. :)
I've most of the next episode written already, and also pretty cool games in that one. Including one of the very rare and obscure ones, but also my absolute favourites.

B.I.O. Freaks looks like it could've belonged on the N64 alongside War Gods and Mace: The Dark age. Remembering back, I have to say that 3D fighters during this era were uniquely terrible. At least Cardinal Syn for the PS1 had some goofy characters.
