Notes:
(from Discogs):
“…This was originally a PAUL BLEY date. Probably Jaco's first recording session. It was released later when JACO's star was rising…”
(from Wikipedia):
“…”Jaco” is the unofficial later title of a 1974 LP album on Paul Bley's Improvising Artists Label. It is notable for being the first professional recording showcasing the talents of Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny. The two had become friends in Miami the year before. Their collaboration continued on Metheny's debut “Bright Size Life” with Bob Moses, recorded in December 1975…”

At long last, I have found my music! What the fuck is this? I've ventured as far as Ornette COleman and free jazz and still have not run into this. Thank you algorithm I suppose. This is the information age working correctly!
I Found this Album in a Second hand Store back in 1988 Got it for $2, Still have it. Man I forgot how Awesome this is Pulling it out now.
I found this record on a hidden store, I remeber I heard it during the 80's, when I followed Metheny, Weather R, and also Pastorius. He was still alive and yet reowned. Two thumbs up!
NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THIS! LOVE JACO AND PAT!!
Pat mentioned this album in the book ”Conversations with Charlie Haden” by Josef Woodard. ”Honestly everybody sounds great on it (the album) except me. I sound totally weird on it…We didn’t even know we were making a record…I got there and he had this huge amplifier and a wah-wah pedal, and he (Paul) said ”play through this”. I don’t think I’d ever seen a wah-wah pedal. So most of my part on this record is me going wah wah wah (laughs).”
Thx for the interesting comment. Regards, ∟∪⊂∀ ˜_˜
I think Pat played and sounds great (albeit unlike his today well known sound), totally in tune w/ mid 1970s Jazz Rock sound. The only problem IMO is he is way too low in the mix.
My Favorite bass player of all time. He my number one pick, and Stanley Clarke is my number two. 🗣️📢Bass God's!!!
Absolutely incredible. I went into another dimension listening to this legendary album
¡Grandes!
my 16 year old jazz fusion geek self brought me here in a time machine from 40 years ago to this place where all the unheard music of my musical heroes is stored in a magical time capsule known as youtube.
I am 17 now. I think that I am in that j-f age. :)

Thats a beautiful space my friend..✌❤
Amen. Amen. Thank God for You Tube making it possible to prove that all this great music exists and is as great (or as not great) as we recall.

😂😂😂 @ "or not so great " yes , ive unearthed a few of those recently. ( mahavishnu orchestra...captain beef heart ) but hey , the thai sticks and columbian gold made almost everything sound better 😎
I'm sixteen and just heard of these guys! Sound amazing! I should learn some of their stuff to play in one of my bands! God bless.
Jaco 🙏🏻 Pat 🙏🏻 Paul 🙏🏻 Bruce 🙏🏻 Sipsu... 🙏🏻
Jaco was such a great player. Just gotta love great bassists like him, Phil Lesh, Wayne Pedzwater and Victor Wooten.

One of the Greatest Teamups on Electric Guitar and Bass Ever!
This album leaves anyone crazy, like all works.
Thanks for loading this epic- I'm so sad Jaco didn't last as long as Pat BUT SO GLAD that Pat still continues to make life worth living with his musical ventures. He keeps morphing and being there for and influenced by many new musicians ....there is no end to his talent Im so grateful for his music of the last 50 years Wonderful Thanks DJEJ
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Great album thanks for share this gem
Prego! you're welcome Antonio. A presto, ∟∪⊂∀ ˜_˜
Ke du bonheur quand on connaît les 2 artistes 😍🤪🥰
Le bonheur est toujours devant soi 😏 même s'il tu ne sais pas c'est toujours toi le meilleur 🥰😜
Can't... Stop... Listening.. to this album..
I wish Jaco had continued playing more free music. For most, it may take several listens for it all to take effect. Any improvising musician can hear that this is a rare and incredible document that will stand the test of time. Along with Trilogue I think this is the greatest documentation of what Jaco was really made of. I think Paul Bley made a mistake by not pursuing this further. Timeless Beauty! Thank you for your efforts in posting this.
Thanks also to you for the nice comment! My warmest greetings, Luca
Boa tarde, aqui do Brasil. Pena que o Jaco morreu de uma forma muito brutal. Mas os seus sons geniais estão aí para podermos ouvir. Abraços
@@mrronaldosilvajr Obrigado pelo comentário Ronaldo, da Suíça (de língua) italiana. ∟∪⊂∀ ˜_˜
It's true; playing that WR calliope music ruined him.
Thank you sipsun8!
Still have this on vinyl! One of my most favorite records of all time.
me too!
Thanks.Good. Graet Work. 👍👍👍
i've had pretty much zero exposure to artists or music like this before now, and this was.... quite interesting. Sometimes i really like it, sometimes it's a bit too out there for me to understand. I can really appreciate the talent it takes to improvise like this, though.
Start listening to more of stuff like this and rock will generally become very boring and basic, for the most part.
I am, with absolutely no sarcasm, totally proud of you.
👍,🐣✔️😊! 👋👋
If you like Jaco’s playing here, Weather Report and the self-titled Jaco Pastorius solo album are really good. Jean-Luc Ponty is also a great starting point for jazz fusion.
@jacobchristensen5899 all present in this channel (Ponty will arrive in the next few months)!

Carla Bley & Paul Bley wrote all the music, a couple of geniuses 🙏🙏
WOW WOW WOW !!!!
Excelente
I had this album and played along with it in my Jaco phase. (I think the use of phaser is effective). It's very spacy/Floyd, yet Jazz.
If this had come out on ECM, we'd all be more familiar with it by now.
Yes! These sounds! Have a bootleg of this brilliant album that I’ve enjoyed for years. So cool to find it here 😎
I didn't know Pat's another recording with Jaco existed. What a wonderful album! Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome, ∟∪⊂∀ ˘_˘
I don't either!
Bright Size Life, the First Pat album with Jaco when he was only 17 years old, that in my opinion is one of his most brilliant album.
MERCI pour la découverte et les liens!!!
Merci aussi à toi Dominique. Mes salutations les plus chaleureuses de la Suisse italienne. Luca
^_^ Love it - thanks for post
Merci beaucoup à vous et vive Jaco 👍♥️🙏
Le dernier dinosaure de la bass 👌🏻
reminds me of my Weather Report days of the late 70s
I remember seeing this lp cover years ago...first time actually hearing this...Pat sounding maybe a little like the late great John Abercrombie here, still formulating his own distinctive sound
Sweet! Has a kind of Weather Report feel to it, I wonder why? Anyway, this is one album I have never heard before, thanks for sharing.
I'm assuming you're being facetious, but if not, Jaco played bass for Weather Report from the mid 70s to the early 80s
@@micahbracken2068 You are correct, sir, but RADIO645 is on target by noting the Joe Z electric piano style here which channels the pre-Jaco material.
DIW released some incredible music over the years, and this was no exception !!
Thank you so much for posting this, which I am listening to while enjoying my morning breakfast and coffee :):) :)
Absolutely incredible!! Very much in the vein of Chick Corea and Return to Forever during that same mid seventies period. Simply terrific. Now I must head outside on the deck on this beautiful February 25, '24 Sunday afternoon, and smoke a fat joint and continue with this auditory orgasm!!! WOW this is amazing!! Take care now, and good health to you!!! from Tim in Ontario, Canada.
Never heard Pat like that, like it.
La pura verdad¡¡¡¡
sipsun8 . You did an excellent job on info and links in the details....
Thanks Tom, I'm glad to know that you appreciate the way I present these albums. Greetings to you and all those who are reading to us. Luca
Great Album ! thanks for posting :)
Very cool to see someone post this. I actually have an original vinyl copy that I got from my first bass teacher along with a copy of the Havana jam and 8:30 albums.
Floating inside, tension, release, mystery feeling guarded, portrait of free solar cookies, creation electric, tension floating, hearts of love, release guarded mystery portrait.
Jaco’s the lynchpin here
Was about to say this may have been the inspiration for Return to Forever...then @ 4:23....NOPE! Not even close....so much better in all ways. What a treat. Other world.
Have this on vinyl, love it
where was this album all my teenagehood?!

Wow. Only recording of Vashkar I've ever heard is Tony Williams Lifetime. Hearing this version is interesting.

I picked this up on CD at a used shop almost 20 years ago. Kind of noodly but kind of fun. Pat Metheny's playing is unrecognizeable to my ears, with that phase shifter hiding his signature tone. I believe they cover a few Carla Bley numbers (Paul Bley's daughter). I'm sure his instincts were right in immediately breaking up the band after the "line ups around the block", still, too bad Paul Bley didn't "milk it" a bit and give us a little more... a forgotten fusion gem. I imagine they were using Bley's technique of "improvising structure" for some of this material.
Carla was Paul's wife at that time, then became Steve Swallow's wife
So Carla swallows... I bet she does
Pat and Jaco, great musicians.
Not sure Bruce and Paul would appreciate your comment.. ;-)
That is awesome!
I like how edgy and dark this is.
この二人では。最高❗
Jaco~フレッドレス最高。

I think is one of Jaco’s best album he appears on. I don’t understand why they don’t reissue it. My CD is almost shot
Pat is sounding very different here! I would say it's Larry Coryell on guitar.
Actually this album was recorded and released in 1974, not '76. In any event thanks for sharing, this album has been long since out of print and impossible to find, a pity, because its' a great early documentation of both Jaco and Pat Metheny - Whereas Jaco's sound here is already fully formed, Pat sounds as much in a 'Jazz-Rock-Fusion' bag as he would ever be, like someone else wrote, displaying a kind of Coryellian/McLaughlin-esque influence and using effect pedals, in a tone that is quite unlike the Pat we've come to know. But to be fair, the whole album has that Classic early 1970s Fusion sound/jam-vibe not unlike Miles' Bitches Brew.
Thank you! it was a typo. And thanks for the nice comment.
I'm sorry, when I saw your comment last night, I was really very tired. Actually, as you can see from this summary of all editions of the album (Discogs - www.discogs.com/master/view/49066 ), the first edition of the album in this and in all other versions (mine is the Japanese of 1986) is actually 1976, as I wrote in the title. The session in New York (Blue Record Studio) dates back to June 1974. However still a thousand thanks for your interesting comment. Best wishes. Luca
@@sipsun8 OK, I see, this edition is from '76. Thanks again for sharing this great, rare album. Cheers.
Yes, it does have a very Mahavishnu Orchestra feel and, oddly enough, sounds nothing like Pat and Jaco's next offering, Bright Size Life, which I believe is a much more superior musical statement to this effort, although as a "jazz jam," it works very well.
Hell yeah Bright size life is a fracking MASTERPIECE! The songs are so distinct, this is good here but compared to BSL is pedestrian. @@zenpaganwarrior
These are fine musicians picking all the right notes--but completely irrespective of melody, I just have to say that the iconic "MWOW" sound of a fretless electric jazz bass is, musicality aside, one of the most beautiful tonal sounds an instrument can produce. It's right up there with Uilleann pipes for me, and hearing that tonal palette in the hands of a master only makes it sweeter.
Thanks for your kind comments and for introducing me to a musical instrument I did not know, the Uilleann pipes. Best regards, Luca
Jaco inspired me to spend a number of years of my life playing fretless. Fine memories...
che Perla!
Ne convengo; grazie per il commento! Un cordiale saluto. Luca

I do know that the recording was made by Paul Bley at his loft jam , without the players permission, or knowledge and Pat in particular was P.O.ed
Pat is something else I saw his shows on you tube I was more in too instrumental solo project, progression metal power metal, speed metal, thrash metal, and of course just heavy metal and hair metal, black metal,Gothic and death metal
What is the title of this album please?
The title of this album - as you can see from the header of this video and the cover - is simply "JACO". Other interesting notes can be found in the video description under the video itself (click on "more" and then on "more" again).
Greetings. Luca

Luca
