there was a rumor that Coleco did the graphics on both the Atari and Intellevision poorly on purpose just to make their system look better and with the hope you would want their system instead.
This is utterly an urban myth. What prevented the 2600 and Intellivision versions of Donkey Kong from being as good as they could be are the same factors that prevented all games from being better: limited cartridge ROM space and a limited development period. On the 2600, Garry Kitchen specifically told Atari management that be could make a very faithful port of the game in 8K, but they told him no, you only have 4K, and the end consumer will buy it anyway as long as it bares a passing resemblance to the arcade original. So he did the best that was possible given the extremely small ROM space he had. And that was Garry Kitchen, who when working with Activision with less restrictions, created Keystone Capers and Pressure Cooker, two of the best games of the era.
@@SatoshiMatrix1 I agree thats why I said it was rumored. Atari at this time had the attitude get it out fast and cheap quailty is not as important as quantity Pac Man proved this. The Mrs. Pacman was fat better and not rushed
IIRC, word was Coleco purposely made the Intellivision port abysmal. Look at the version they released for their own system around the same time. It was amazing.
Even worse not only is the intelevision version of donkeykong abysmal but it is not even compatible with the intelevision 2,now we will never know if coleco did this to purposely hurt the sales of the intelevision 2, since mattel around that time no longer produced intelevision 1 systems anymore, Not only that but coleco also did not released a version for the atari 5200, as a result atari took revenge on coleco by not releasing their completed pac man game on the colecovision.
Coleco's Donkey Kong, Carnival and Mouse Trap were released before the Intellivision 2 was made. When Mattel released the Intellivision 2 they added some code that prevented those 3 games to run. The same code also prevented their own game Word Fun to run on those systems.
There's finally an awesome version of this game available for the Intellivision with everything the arcade version had. It's called DK Arcade, and there's a second version called D2K Arcade. It's so good it shows just how bad the fighting between Coleco and Mattel must have been back then. I think you can still buy them online from the classic game publishers website.
Here's a bit of a fun rumor I've learned about Donkey Kong: Apparently when Nintendo was porting the game to the Colecovision, they were contracted by Coleco to make worse versions of the game for the Atari 2600 and Intellivision solely for the purpose of making Donkey Kong for the Colecovision seem better than it is.
I've bought three copies of this game (without a box), and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Thanks Mark, my three year quest to make it work has come to a halt!
I disagree with most people in that I think Mark works well with a co-host. He's great by himself and he's obviously hilarious and is no newbie when it comes to reviewing or playing games. However, he occasionally lets his silliness get in the way of his reviewing. He's very entertaining of course but I think a calmer, more serious, critical and thorough co-host would be a welcomed addition in my book.
Interesting fact: if you grab the ROM dump of this game, and write a program on a C64 to read every other byte and then display it on a bitmap screen....you will see a graphic element or two hinting that Coleco may have had intent to make a 3rd screen.
Yes you need to get a hold of the homebrew version that was released last year. It isn't cheap but there is a copy on Ebay. It is arcade perfect. Glad to see you finally got yourself an Intellivision.
i think it's from Mega Bomberman for the Genesis/Mega Drive - when bomberman pushes in the shards and right before the start of a new stage as far as i can remember.
Be sure to check out the homebrew versions of "Donkey Kong Arcade" and "DIIK Arcade"...both for Intellivision. They both blow away even the Colecovision version...!!!
All Hail the Disco Pinball Dimension!!!!!!!!!!!! I hear the beer flows like tap water as well as getting an awesome cloned version of your self so you can have twice the fun.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo never did any Atari, Intellivision or Coleco games, they just licensed Coleco, Atari and Ocean to do their own ports (Coleco did the console versions, Atari the american computer versions and Ocean did the UK computer versions)
The real question still lingers: What brand of conditioner do TJ and Derek use? Would you rather have curly or straight hair? Maybe Mark can make a review of their hairstyles.
So many great games, this one was a more difficult game because there was a lag in the jump of Mario from the time you pressed the button to the time he got in the air.
Hi Mark! Nice review… Would you consider doing a review for Donkey Kong II for the Intellivision? It's a new game, now available for purchase. Just search for "Games for Your Intellivision" and/or "D2K". We would be happy to send you a free copy. And yes, it works on the Intellivision II. :-)
but in all seriousness. The intellisvison was my first ever game console. And I had Donkey Kong on it. so seeing and actually hearing this like 26 years later brings tears of nostalgic joy to my eyes. I really don't care if this version sucks (I was 3 years old). I hope one of the upcoming reviews is going to be burger time, because that was my favorite on the intellivison.
Isn't it ironic that in 2012, Intelligent Vision came out with Donkey Kong Arcade, which has better graphics, better gameplay, and all of the levels, music, and intermission screens intact? Even more ironic is that Elektronite came out shortly thereafter with DKII which has everything that DKArcade boasted, and threw in 5 more additional new screens? I guess that rumor that Coleco was scaling back Intellivision games to make money off of Mattel, and sell Colecovisions was TRUE!
I have to agree - sometimes the tone in his voice changes from sentence to sentence and even midway a sentence. I suspect that something went wrong on the editing because other videos don't have this problem.
Man, I remember waaay back in the day playing Intellivision games at my friend's house & having to juggle the two different systems. What a pain that was. FYI:The Intellivoice doesn't work with the Intellivision 2 either, which is a bummer since B-17 Bomber & Space Spartans are fantastic games. Also, there are joystick-style replacements for that stupid disk available that make gaming on the Intellivision much less of a chore. I have two on mine.
other than the controller i believe this port is a lot better than the atari 2600 but the 400/800 was the best because it included all 4 levels in proper USA order
This is hilarious because I remember playing this at my cousin's house when I was a kid. I had an Atari and he had an Intellivision. I always thought the Intellivision was so much better. I was jealous. The pecking order went Colecovision, Intellivision, then Atari. Then I played the Intellivision. It was Donkey Kong, and although I the graphics were slightly better, the damn thing was way too difficult to control with that pile of shit controller. I don't know who thought that was a good idea.
The Intellivivion controller is a great controller much better then the Sony Playstations with the buttons instead of a D- Pad, just think of the Disc as the predecessor to the D-Pad. The buttons are not akwardly placed on the Intellivision 1 controllers, I never had much trouble controlling all the games I played on my Intellivision and I'm not very good at video games compared to most people.

Great review Mark, the double Mark is hillarious!. Please make more Intellivision reviews.
Coleco's Donkey Kong, Carnival and Mouse Trap were released before the Intellivision 2 was made. When Mattel released the Intellivision 2 they added some code that prevented those 3 games to run. The same code also prevented their own game Word Fun to run on those systems.
99,9% of the time i get more fun watching Mark´s reviews than playing the games...

This was amazing. Mark on Mark reviews should be a thing. The only thing on this channel.
haha this is a funny review. I always thought Donkey Kong looked like he has a cage for his chest/belly in this version.
When I was 7, I bought Donkey Kong Jr. for my dad on his birthday in about '85... because I wanted to play it.
I miss the old episodes with Dave. Now those were awesome.
This is the best review ever.
The only thing better than two Marks is three Marks.
And the only thing better than three Marks is
Space Marks!
It is great to see Mark and Mark back together. It is comedy gold!
This is the best partner Mark ever had when doing a review on CGR
Now we need a video featuring two Daves. Im sure the CGI capabilities of Edit Station 1 are up to the task.
I have this game on my actual console. This version makes the Atari 2600 version look like a masterpiece.
Oh God. I used to play this as a kid. I feel like I probably liked it.

Mark, there's nothing wrong with your co-hosts, but you seem to have by far the best chemistry with just yourself.
Interesting fact: if you grab the ROM dump of this game, and write a program on a C64 to read every other byte and then display it on a bitmap screen....you will see a graphic element or two hinting that Coleco may have had intent to make a 3rd screen.
What!! You didn't use the hammer? I was waiting the whole review for one of the Marks to use it...darn it! Lol Awesome review as always, keep it up.
This is how all CGR duo reviews should be done! lol
Yes you need to get a hold of the homebrew version that was released last year. It isn't cheap but there is a copy on Ebay. It is arcade perfect. Glad to see you finally got yourself an Intellivision.
Definitely. He'd make an awesome voice actor for a Seth Macfarlane character.
this is the first game I ever played. I was 3 years old. The game came out 1 year before I was born. O.o
i think it's from Mega Bomberman for the Genesis/Mega Drive - when bomberman pushes in the shards and right before the start of a new stage as far as i can remember.
Bless your hearts that this incarnation of donkey Kong don't work on Intellivision II
that guy playing Vectrex is pretty hot
the other guy isn't though :D
Porky Mario would later star in the Action 52 hit Hambo's Adventure. His final role was in a BLT.
finally back to legit games. Thank you, Mark!
good review! i love what you said at 0:38 :D im a huge fan of the vectrex as well :)
Be sure to check out the homebrew versions of "Donkey Kong Arcade" and "DIIK Arcade"...both for Intellivision. They both blow away even the Colecovision version...!!!
the Atari 400/800 had the best Donkey Kong port...it has all 4 boards in proper US order as well as the 'How High Can You Get' cut screens
Donkey (in this version of the game at least) looks like a giant creepy happy face. 🤣
i remember once i had this 50 games in 1 cartridge for my old Atari 2600 and i remember one of the games on it was Donkey Kong, it was pretty cool lol
Two Marks! Just what CGR needed!
All Hail the Disco Pinball Dimension!!!!!!!!!!!! I hear the beer flows like tap water as well as getting an awesome cloned version of your self so you can have twice the fun.
The people at Coleco owe me an apology!
No, even that version only had 3 out of the 4 levels. The Atari 8-bit computer version (400/800) had all 4 though and it looked and played fantastic.
I liked those reviews. Mark works well with them and they work well with him.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo never did any Atari, Intellivision or Coleco games, they just licensed Coleco, Atari and Ocean to do their own ports (Coleco did the console versions, Atari the american computer versions and Ocean did the UK computer versions)
mark in stereo? there must be an ice cream sandwich in my pocket because something in my pants is melting.
The real question still lingers: What brand of conditioner do TJ and Derek use? Would you rather have curly or straight hair? Maybe Mark can make a review of their hairstyles.
Kong looks like a swamp monster in this version.
Donkey Kong looks looks derpy standing still
Dave will still be missed
Ha ha. Donkey Kong looks sick as he's very green. I never knew this came out for Intellivision. Good review here.
This guy must have a radio show as his day job.
Mark reviewing with himself is better than him reviewing with anyone from Undertow.
So many great games, this one was a more difficult game because there was a lag in the jump of Mario from the time you pressed the button to the time he got in the air.

Didn't know this existed for the Intellivision.
Vectrex granted Mark the ability to clone himself!

Double the Mark, double the fun.
Though I have no problems with Derek or TJ either.
We all know we like the NES, Colecovision and Atari 2600 Ports!
The only thing better than two Marks is one Mark and one Dave!
I love doppelganger Mark.
Isn't it ironic that in 2012, Intelligent Vision came out with Donkey Kong Arcade, which has better graphics, better gameplay, and all of the levels, music, and intermission screens intact?

Space Marks with flamethrowers are even better.
He's playing Winter Games on the Vectrex.
BEST DONKEY KONG CLONE EVER
Keep reviewing old school games please, i love it.
I have to agree - sometimes the tone in his voice changes from sentence to sentence and even midway a sentence. I suspect that something went wrong on the editing because other videos don't have this problem.
How many Mark's are there? Do you guys just tag out for each review? These are questions that I need to know.
Nooo, Mark was transported to the Disco Pinball Dimension and came back doubled. Didn't you watch the TX Sector review?
I liked it better when CGR didnt show Mark's face during the reviews.
Kinda like Final Fantasy before voice acting.
Man, I remember waaay back in the day playing Intellivision games at my friend's house & having to juggle the two different systems. What a pain that was.

weee I had this back in the day :-)
Ahhh the first time I ever felt ripped off on a game that was a gift.
Comment from David O3O:
alright! I'll post another flipnote, if you want me to post so badly I'll do it, but don't expect much.
Double Mark = Double Awesomeness
No its not. Mark has made double Marks before he did reviews in cooperation with Derek or TJ
Evil twin awesome, keep them coming. Greatest idea yet
I never knew intellivision had donkey Kong I thought beauty and the beast was made for it because it didn't have donkey kong
just Mark can make a review of such an awful game so funny and entertaining. You are number one dude !!!!
Finally, the perfect co-host!
Second Mark is back!
It's one of their own tracks.
other than the controller i believe this port is a lot better than the atari 2600 but the 400/800 was the best because it included all 4 levels in proper USA order
wait wait...hold on...wasnt Mario ORIGINALLY called Jump Man only for Donkey Kong?...
lol, I liked the double Mark's. Double mark POWAAAH!
hey did u send a vopy to him since he did the review?
I was going to say "Mark has been playing too much TX Sector", but that would have been stupid.
Lucky there is a home brew Donkey Kong for the Intellivision that fixes this travesty of video game history!
greatest co host you'l ever get :D aside from stella of course, stella beats even a cloned mark
Mark + TJ? Shit?
Mark + Mark? YES!
Mark and Evil Mark should do more reviews together!
A Nintendo game, licensed by Coleco on the Intellivision
Mind = blown
That's also why it's such a bad version. Coleco deliberately made a bad port to make the Colecovision look better by comparison.
This is hilarious because I remember playing this at my cousin's house when I was a kid. I had an Atari and he had an Intellivision. I always thought the Intellivision was so much better. I was jealous. The pecking order went Colecovision, Intellivision, then Atari. Then I played the Intellivision. Get the upcoming donkey kong arcade 2 for intellivision online, just look up and pre-order
I had this ~30 years ago, it wasn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be. I mean for today it's bad, but for back then, it was pretty decent.
my intellivision 1 had 9 pin replaceable controllers...you just have to take the console apart to remove them.
An ad what?!?!?! I have adblocker!!
He said Mario looked like Porky Pig.... LMAO😂😂😂
Mark and Mark reviews > Mark and TJ reviews
First time I'll have to disagree with Mark, the model 1 Intellivision is superior to the model 2. Can't beat the woodgrain and faux-gold finish.
The next review will have two Dereks to balance this review out.
The Intellivivion controller is a great controller much better then the Sony Playstations with the buttons instead of a D- Pad, just think of the Disc as the predecessor to the D-Pad.
