Procrastinating my teshuva

I ate chametz on pesach when i was 13. My family celebrated pesach but we were traditional and i didn't really know any torah. Is that karet?
I remember coming home from school and telling my mother and she got very upset with me and told me to never do it again. But she didnt tell me the reason. Baruch Hashem im now a bal teshuva and am observant.
Also never intentionally ate chametz on pesach again after mothers scolding
