Barrow is the northernmost city in the United States, located in northern Alaska. The climate is polar and Arctic. Winter weather can be extremely dangerous because of the combination of cold and wind, while summers are cool even at their warmest. The population is about 4,000 in year 2007.

The music makes me feel like I'm in an old school nintendo game…The Legend of Zelda or The Adventures of Link, type of game.
+Sarah Norment More like Earthbound
because it is, its from golden sun on the gameboy advance. one of the best rpgs ever made
Legend of Zelda immediately came to mind lol
Thank you so much for the nostalgia! Oh how I miss video bank, Pepe’s, Brower’s Cafe & more! ❤
That sign pointing to all the bigger cities at 1:37 with the music really gives me that sense of just how remote Barrow is. I'm not particularly keen on ever visiting there but, learning about small towns always seems to interest me.
Nope, not livin in Alaska, but I hope I do. I love the nostalgic and picturesque aurora.
This music feels like I'm in one of the ghost towers of a pokemon game.
Thanks for the brief look at Barrow. I had a friend that worked there in the 1980s. I'll probably never get there in person, but thanks to folks like yourself, I can at least check it out.
Me too. I like these vids. They mean I don't have to visit.
I want to go to Barrow so much, and I've been obssesed with it ever since I first saw it on Google Earth.
Have you been able to go?
@@titanstorm1146 Haven't even been able to go to Alaska. Still on my bucket list though.
@@masrod94 I hope you get to go soon, best of luck
Go there and near by Top Of the World hotel at Cape Smyth, you gonna see the horrific view of Arctic Ocean. Police info desk at the Police station was closed all weekend. Airport closed everyday at 6pm so you cannot stay at the airport lobby 24/7. Muddy road and and yes Devil sea. I am from Beach city of So Cali. seen oceans and beautiful coastline but never seen the horrific view of the Arctic Ocean. In sum, if you are already Anchorage or Fairbanks go Alaska Airlines worth a visit. Always no sales tax tax free
Thanks for sharing this. I would love to see Barrow just to say I've been in the northernmost point in the U.S.
Same here. "Fly to Barrow, AK, have a beer and slice of pizza for lunch, and then a margarita and chimichanga at Pepe's (correction - just read that Pepe's burned down...), shake hands with the mayor, then fly home..." That's on the bucket list.
Nah, I live in St Louis. I'd have to stay a night. I've never been to Alaska though I have family outside of Anchorage. I'd actually like to stand at that northernmost edge of land and see the Arctic Ocean. Just a quirk of mine.
@Reflex Yeah, that sounds like a GREAT idea! You'd probably pull your foot out of the water and then smash it to pieces on the sand when you go to stand on it.
Ihave never seen snow, never touched it, but it is a dream that maybe one day I can make it come true!
I reallly would like to know Alaska, (and barrow) someday, well I am from Brazil so I think ther is a long way to......
Ivelise Barssotti Come to Minnesota in the winter. You'll see snow and I'll take you ice fishing.
I want to be in Barrow, Alaska.
Nice!!! Thanks for sharing some insight on this place!
I’ve been there and it is a unique experience. But don’t believe the drama queens. It has TV, Internet, good food, colorful characters to share stories with, and air service to anywhere. If you’re you’re thinking Daytona Beach, don’t go to Barrow. If you’re thinking bigger, give it a try.
I was speaking weather wise. Nome is a great place. Just make sure you are making enough money to live there. Housing is not cheap, but with the gold mine shut down it was getting a little cheaper. I was working for the hospital under contract and that contract included free housing. Permanent they do not give even subsidized housing, they pretty much leave you on your own to get affordable housing and ship your own stuff up.
Beautifully done with great music
It looks beautiful overthere. I wish I could visit Barrow someday!!!
Hi from Yakutsk
Barrow was originally inhabited by Inupiaq Eskimos that lived in ice houses or underground shelters that survived by hunting sea life and picking berries in the summertime. They were hardy, strong, and healthy people until the white folks introduced their settled way of life along with sugar, carbs, and alcohol. Then Asians and Samoans thought they could bring their ways of life there. This place was not meant to be a modern, permanent settlement, but because of it, it's now a severely depressed population living off inflated prices of processed food at the A/C store, illegally sold liquor, and homemade brews.
Jon Stewart *leaves tissue*
Pepe's is no more. I am here on a nursing assignment. So ready to leave
Pepe!!
Why did you go up there then??
Michele Baird praise kek
The owner of Pepe's was on a Johnny Carson rerun tonight. I'm sorry it's not there. She said in the 1984 show that business was great.
Are you still there?
thanks for show barrow, maybe someday i can visit barrow. its nostalgic and cool.
I do not know what you do for a living, but before you head up anywhere in the Bush, meaning fly in only areas, you need to make sure of your cost of living and your income.
if you take a job and they offer to help with shipping things up, ship up food, non perishables. food is expensive. the Safeway store does have some good deals, but it is still not cheap.
Bottom line, if you are looking for adventure it is something you will find there. Just be prepared for the cold and remoteness.
Thanks. That's informative. I'm thinking to moving to Barrow. :)
Suhachi Chutchenko really did you?
yes, i shopped the ac when i got here. just glad my meals are covered in contract. I even shopped at the quick shop. Loving Barrow, the beach is amazing, and I am told whaling is starting soon, I hope I ca see one.
uhm... we dont have a Safeway up in barrow. we have a bunch of little store, but no safeway, idk if you heard of AC, but we have one of those.
there is, but i do not know how to get a hold of the barge company. there is a lace in anchorage that advertises shipping to and from alaska, the packaging store moving center, i only know there ads, but if you contact them, they might be able to help.
if you want to mountain man, look around dillingham maybe, they have cannery jobs there during season.
cool video
yes soon, but now its just the fall whaling. you'd like it better in spring whaling.
actually the day light in Barrow alaska is 24 hour in summer and in winter less than a half hour of day light the only way i know that is because i live in Barrow
Beautiful Video , This is the reason why I want to move there.
Is that polar night or midnight sun
@SuhachiChutchen
Dude all I have to say is, don't expect moving to Barrow thinking "it's going to be paradise". It's a great town full of nice people from what peopel say, but if you have no college or have no interest in working for an oil company, then don't bother moving to Barrow, mainly because jobs are somewhat scarce unless you have college experience with State and federal agencies or if you have *experience* with oil field operations/companies, then you will land a good job at Barrow.
I use to live there, I still like it there, though right now i live in the 48's. I just wanted to correct u on something. You wrote inuit. inuit's are canadian, the right term is Inupiat. Inupiaq for singular for eskimo's in Alaska. I suggest if you visit Barrow, you go during the spring/summer. Around the end of June to July. That is when our celebration of Nalukataq happens usually. you can find out more a lot of times on the local brodcasting station KBRW site on whats happening in Barrow :)
i really want to visit barrow but only during the summer
Damn it Bobby you went a little bit too north of the border
Thank you.
Last time I ate at Pepe's was the evening of Feb 5th, 1983. Glad it is still going strong.
actually it burned down around 5 years ago. ua-cam.com/video/TPabZypLw58/v-deo.html
Just when I think life is bad, I think about Barrow. Taking pride in a whale bone. Then I remember it could always be worse.
Cool, yes. Literally.
Lovely little documentary. But why no images of the people of Barrow? Was it too cold to go outside?
@SnowyGrl11 its true that there is 30 days of night?
A mexican restaurant? You're kidding
@TBAKER4230 I lived there for 14 years and I go back every once and a while of course to see my family and do the traditional stuff. entertainment besides the obv. is basically getting to know your family, discovering the land, camping and hunting, staying physically fit. For teens its the same stuff besides going to a shopping mall really. There are also frequent random parties/get-togethers with friends and family. No fast food but there are restaurants. brower's cafe is my favorite one.
There ARE Vampires in Barrow!
well made video
@SnowyGrl11 3 months ? woww .. i can't believe
what do you do in this period of 3 months of darkness? the airport is open?
welcome to alaska where my passengers reside and where we hardley have a summer and all we do is smoke and ride.
Hi from Yakutsk Russia
Hi! i really like this video. i live in new jersey (20 minutes from new york city) and i've always wanted to visit barrow. has anyone ever made the trip from nyc to barrow? how much does the trip cost each way? i assume that there would be a number of transfers to make it there.
of course its expensive. they have to fly everything up there, otherwise they are putting it on the barge, which takes longer. so, of course everything is expensive
@SorinFromRomania no, its actually about 3 months of darkness in Barrow...a lot longer than the comic and movie claim lol.
what the weather like in summer time, or when is the best time to visit barow
I'll pass on Barrow lol
Good, we don't want you!
Yeah stay the hell away from our town!
Are there any strip clubs? Where do you turn up,
lmao
You turn up in your own house. That is the strip club.
Electroshockk44 In barrow they have hotlines.
At pepe's
I bet you look good on a thong.
Wow, the average annual high temperature is 15 degrees Fahrenheit. No thank you. Now I won't curse Wisconsin weather so much :)
Joseph McCantry in the winger it can get below 0 degrees fahrenheit ik bc i live in Barrow Alaska
If i can work out a contract i will be wintering in barrow. it is my dream. after Bethel, Dillingham and Nome; I am stoked to spend a winter or more in Barrow. Nome was intense, but I know Barrow will be awesome.
@funrizwan even with the extreme weather, its still beautiful. its a place for those who like to live a naturalistic lifestyle really. if you need a mall, its not the place for you. also, all the people there are quite close knit. its like one big family in barrow. you most likely will be friends with your boss. some people like that aspect. also, the pay is very high...even menial labor. its double the pay basically from what you see in the 48's. some like that type of lifestyle is all.
Is this the place where "30 Days of Night" was filmed?
Where's Joe!? He told me wearing only a t-shirt meant he finished his route faster, hahaha!
the 2 people that disliked were frozen to death in Barrow lolz
I lived there for 86 years after I had got back from the first great war. Now I reside in OHIO been here for 25 years.
Dog years?
I am a agent of time and space. I move thru the galaxy like water.
Not a nice thing to call a lady
Im curious...do they have any type of electronic store in Barrow Alaska, or is there a general store or something that sells maybe TV's or stoves, or possible even video games? I know there are high schoolers there, was wondering if they have stuff like Ipods and video game stuff like you see alot of kids in more populated parts of the country.
Much like the Amish, they do not believe in electricity. Just some candle lit homes and smiles get them through the winter just fine. :)
my contract pays for my meals, so i am set.
I'm heading up there in October ,what are my chances of getting involved in whaling ,or is that solely for inhabitants
wheel barrow
@SnowyGrl11 I e-mailed them & they replied promptly. Is the Nalukataq like a Harvest Festival obviously with the fauna of the region?
G0IMB Nalukataq is something we have to celebrate the whaling summer/spring season in Nalukataq whalers give out caribou, duck, or geese soup with whale meat and there is a blanket toss as well
💕💕
Pretty sure the music is from "Golden sun" the game boy advance game
@tito05n No your thinking of "60 nights of day"
been to ak if your still thair god bless
@

It's a fly-in-only city? So then the planes never leave or they just don't want any return revenue? There are several flights daily? To an icy village at the top of civilization? So then what, everybody leaves by dog sled?
it means the only way to get there AND leave there is by plane...ffs think
you ask too many fucking questions.
Does Barrow have crime such prostitution and drugs? I'm sure there is small theft crimes like shoplifting but nothing grand like auto theft, robbery, or burglary. How about domestic violence or crimes against children? What religious denominations are represented in Barrow?
how far is barrow from fairbanks ?
@SnowyGrl11 i want to visit Barrow in the winter because before i die, i want to know what -40° degrees actually are! :D
still warm compared to some russian cities, yakutsk has -39*C january average and 200,000+ people live there, and then there are villages like oymyakon where average high in january is -42,5*C and average low -50*C.
this music is like from some old rpg game
I'm from California. It's 3 degrees up there, like how even. 😂
Anyways, interesting video.
@wolfsblood07 how the hell can you pack sunglasses and a small jacket to barrow in january...this aint the bahamas it stay minus temps that month...if you do sumthin stupid like that please get it on video lmao
lol golden sun good memories
Why is there Golden Sun music?
I've always wanted to drive to Deadhorse, and then from there, fly to Barrow
yeah, well then if u are, i guess il see u there sometimes during celebrations or at the store lol.
Are there any gyms in Barrow?
omg. BRR you would have to be crazy to live there!! aaah!! Im happy in Arizona and the UK. lol
how can people afford to live there with few jobs and it being so expensive?
Gas is basically $0 because people ride whales to work. The money that WOULD go to fuel and car maintenance now goes to groceries and whale maintenance. Hope you learned someting! :)
*Of course* there's a Mexican restaurant in one of the most remote towns in America...
has anyone ever driven to barrow? say from the northern most alaskan town connected by raod to barrow?
what is normal tempture dec jan feb how much day light i hear only 2hours twy light
same temps as miami
Minus 13
it would be a good day for me if i could do barrowing in barrow
Where do you get a beer? Is there any women?
Golden Sun music baby. Ten times better that your little ZELDA poopie.
This music reminds me of Zelda...
How is the suicide rate there
So there is Mexicans in Alaska?
Ignacio Hernandez maybe a couple but that Mexican restaurant (which burned down) was owned an ran by a lady (Fran Tate) who wasn't Mexican.
Out of curiosity. How much would a typical dish cost at that restaurant?
back in the 1980's when i worked there, hamburger &7 and up, prime rib $22, surf and turf $27. Taco Day (tuesdays?) 3 on a plate with beans and rice, $6. 'bout all i remember from the menu.
What is a "fly-in" only airport?
It means once you fly-in you can no longer fly-out. It's a one way ticket to hell on ice.
CAWD...
That was depressing....
pepe’s burned down a few years ago
it was like being in hell!!i hated it couldnt wait to get a flight home
umm.. well keep your opinions away please i live in barrow alaska and my life is great.
Not depressing at all. City living is.
David Pristupa id rather love in nyc and meet a bunch of people and be able to go outside without getting a cold and actually seeing people
Oh yeah, cause this is just a spitting image of New York.
Terrible place to live. Simple necessities are completely unaffordable. Jobs are zilch, houses are shacks. No thanks...
Thanks, but no thanks. There is more to life than just working and making money
Like freezing to death and eating whale lard.
im gonna opt. out and head to the Dominican republic 😉
is there any real barrow Alaska residents here if so please tell us your experiences
Moe Choudhury it was decent. natives don't react well to new people. kinda bleak weather but always sunny except a month in January. whaling is cool. but the meat is blubberu and has no flavor. football was a school favorite.
I lived there for many years. I went up as a teen seeking employment as a lifeguard. Despite what news outlets tell you - the job market is NOT as thriving as it once was.
