THANK YOU! I wish this video would show up higher in the search instead of all the clickbait videos that show up first. This video really helped me. I have a 1979 CX500 Custom I’ve rebuilt. It’s always had the stickiest, gummy throttle. I’d gotten used to it, figuring it was just “vintage bike” feel. After watching this video, I removed the cables and really cleaned them. Lubed them, cleaned and lubed the throttle sleeve, adjusted the length. It’s like night and day! The throttle is so much smoother. It snaps back. The bike feels so much more responsive. I’m amazed at how much better it feels to ride it. I know the cables don’t affect how the bike runs, but it honestly feels like the bike runs way better than before. I suppose that’s because the carbs are reacting to much more subtle flicks of my wrist instead of having the wrestle the throttle to get it to react. Thank you!
4 years later, this is a life saver. I've been looking all over the place to figure out how to get my deluxe throttle fixed. I've dropped my handle bars for the cafe look/feel and the first few min of this video was eye opening for me. Thank you! Going to head home today and make these adjustments. Appreciate you putting this out on UA-cam!
Dude...... I just spent two hours removing the tank moving handle bars around and could not figure it out.. Watch you video and boom worked like a champ... Your the man.
Great video saved me £60-£80 , bought a T100 and it has sticky throttle , tried lube etc nothing worked then watched this video and it all made sense , my throttle was high up on the standard bars but my bike has lowered bars as I’ve gone for a cafe racer look , so it made sense to me when I saw this video , done exactly what you said on the video and problem solved . Cheers
Brilliant..after changing my handlebars I have this issue, I just wasted 40 minutes watching 4 other videos about oil blah blah.. I had a funny feeling I had to go to the carb...thanks for the tweek that I needed 👍
You can remove the "return" cable either for diagnostics or forever. If its because of 2 cables this will definitely fix it. If its something else, it will help narrow the issue.
I had to replace my return cable last year. Everything has been working great. Haven't ridden it in a year, and now the return cable snaps back fine, but when it's running, the rpms take a little bit to come all the way down like it should. I've been trying to adjust it at the throttle and at the carb. The accelerator cable has 2mm of free play.
Thats an odd one. If the pull cable is sticky the return will be slowed down no matter how good that cable is. You will have to cheetah cable individually, the barrel on the bar without cables hooked up to it, and the linkage on the carb(s).
Thanks for making this video because my bike was having the same issue. I hate making videos too but you just saved me a bunch of time and cash so again big thanks my friend.
That’s what I ended up doing too! I did it this morning and fixed my issue. The only thing going on now is if I tighten down the bolt on the throttle plate it does not snap back so I got nut pretty loose at the moment so I’m not sure what’s going on there
Hi! Great video, thank you! I did this on my warrior 1700 after getting shorter bars and it worked! 3 days later I went back out, and now it's even more stuck? Is that normal? Do I need to simply adjust it more? Thoughts appreciated!
Only thought would be if the cable has a fluid/lube inside hat is thickening when colder. You may have to figure out if its cable related or carb related.
I recently lowered the handIebars on my cb750 to clip ons and the throttle is sticking. think I've got the adjuster tightened as far as it'll go both at the lever and at the carbs and It's still sticking.
Disconnect both cables from the throttle barrel and see if the function properly. If they do and the barrel spins free on the bar end. The cables need slack in some way. You can always remove the reputable and run a pull cable only. Just make sure the return spring definitely functions.
But what if I have 2 throttle cables? Got exactly the same malfunction as you but still can’t manage to get it to snap back. Spring, cables everything checked and is in good shape and working properly. When I take everything off and manually pull on the “pull” cable and let go of it, it snaps straight back.
This set up has 2 cables. 1 pull and one push. A single cable design is always a pull type and I've never seen a single style have an issue. Of you can not get ot to work with a push pull setup. Remove the push cable setup and run a single cable system.
Typically only 1 has an adjustment point. Once you find that then you adjust it and that almost always fixes the issues. If that doesn't work then I remove the return cable and only run a pull cable.
I same problem on my 2002 vstar 650 but the cable nuts and bolts are kinda different I tried this method it just thighed the throttle even more im starting to lose hope and take it to the mechanic please help
Having same problem on 2002 Honda rebel. Did as you advised and it’s still stuck. Took cables off throttle body (on carb) and throttle without cables is not snapping back. So do I need to replace a spring ( also recently cleaned carb too)? I’m not a mechanic just a tinkerer.
If it doesn't snap back on the carb without any cables connected then you have an issue with the carb. The linkage on the carb should return by itself and move easily.
Yes I had disassembled the carb cleaned it and then replaced handle bars from stock to drag. I looked at sone sites trying to find the linkage however, I can’t seem to find the part that controls the butterfly ‘knob’ ? Or whatever it’s called. I literally just finished my msf course and this is my first bike. Haha I sat and watched video after video and yours was definitely the most helpful. What part would I need? Like looks like the spring on back of butterfly doesn’t seem strong enough.
I have a Yamaha v star 650 and I’m having the same issue I put custom bars on it. I tried to do as the video showed but couldn’t find the adjuster you were showing my throttle cable is connected to a butterfly system on the carb and I’m not sure how to adjust it any ideas?
Some systems just don't have an adjustment. Very difficult to fix. Without cutting the internal cable you have to remove ver small amof outer shielding. As stated its isn't easy. Make sure the cable or any part of the cable system does NOT have an adjustment somewhere.
I've had 1 that had no adjusters. I had to shorten the outer cable shielding. Very difficult to do because you do NOT want to hurt the inner cable at all and you have to guess at how much to remove since you can't adjust out any slack.
Hello Sir i would really appreciate your help.. I have the same issue on a Zr7s and my throttle cables dont come with any adjustment on the carb side..
Only thing I can think of is to shorten the out shielding of the pull cable. You would have to do it without damaging the internal cable. I would start with 1/8 of an inch. Just my suggestion and what I would try.
@@thedutchmanandthedigger1500 hello for some reason it didn't work should i try cutting the push cable also? When i unhook the push cable it does return..
Hmmmm, I don't think so. Check the lever without the cable connected, then tha cable with both ends disconnected. If those are free flowing then its possible you have an issue with the clutch springs, pivot point, basket, or something in that area.
Hi, I've got a yamaha virago 125 1998 and i have the problem but i cant find any bolts to tighten up or loose like you did. Nothing is broken but my motorcycle still goes full throttle when turned on. No slack in the throttle either. Any idea why this is happening?
I got this issue , but I can't do what you suggested because I only have one nut on the end of the throttle cable and the pull cable 2019 bike , so I can't adjust it , I changed my bars but went back to stock and still have the problem
If you have 2 throttle cables, you can eliminate the return cable and use only the pull cable. This can be done for diagnosis as well as permanent. If you run it permanently just make sure the return spring system is working properly. If the pull cable shielding or throttle barrel is damaged, the throttle will not return. These steps and option will help diagnose additional problems.
@@thedutchmanandthedigger1500 thanks for replying , my throttle snaps back like it should but it's hard to twist on the gas , I haven't seen anyone with this problem , so I think the return cable is working but the pull cable is not I think it's coming off the throttle tube like in your video but it looks like you can't adjust the other end of the cable like you did as there is only one nut , i have thought about removing the return cable just worried that might cause problems like stuck throttle lol
I would disconnect both cables and test the slide of each individually. Also work the mechanism at the carb end to see how is functioning without any cables connected.
@@thedutchmanandthedigger1500 yep done that , they work fine off the bike carb spring works good too , I'm thinking of trying to rout the cables in a different way , there is nothing else I can think of, I'll let you know what it was if I ever do get it fixed 🤣 I just spent heaps on the bike getting a tune and a exhaust but I can't enjoy it because the dam throttle don't turn 🤬

Was it the pull or return cable that you were adjusting there?
@shutinyanks on this bike the return cable is the only one that had an adjustable cable shield.

You can switch to a single "pull" cable. Many bikes only use 1 cable to pull the throttle open.
so many thanks!
Could a bad throttle tube cause any issues with throttle control?
Absolutely. If its crushed or the end is messed up it will drag on the bar end.
Do you also have to adjust the second cable? Or is this issue resolved with just the throttle cable?
No, I have never had to. Most only have 1 adjustable cable. Some have 2 locations to adjust though.
