Eli, I've been watching your videos for about 2 months now and I think they are really good, at least for myself. Very informative and you talk to a broad audience. Keep it going, I may have questions later, and also just keep watching and learning.
I don't normally leave sincere comments, but my hat goes off to you sir, Eli. My tech experience is up there but I'm not in the field professionally, but I build on the side for fun, and your video was in the list of things to watch on the side of one of my videos I recently uploaded of my new build booting up. I put the OS, Drivers, and a few applications all on the SSD, while I have a regular HDD for everything else. I pointed all Firefox DLs to a Downloads folder on the HDD, and pointed the Document, Music, and Pictures links in the start menu to the HDD folders named the same. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video man. Nice and clear, you're very clear when you talk, you and that is hard to find. I like people like you on UA-cam that are like that. You really know your stuff, and I could tell in the first 5 seconds of your video. I enjoy YT on my phone late at night while laying in bed, so I subscribed and I'll me watching much more later. You're great! Thanks! I also learned a lot more than I knew which is awesome.
thanks for the vid. If you haven't thought about becoming a college professor, you should. You are easy to understand and give just enough information to leave it up to us that watch to go do more research on our own.
Thank you ELI; you are great : with my over 5 yrs IT Experience and all your videos I just got hired L New company : IT Network Enginner : Great salary amd great hours No nights NO Weekends... thanks again.....
I agree I got to itt-tech and they just teach the test. So every time my classes studies something that Mr. eli covered I learn more from Mr. eli than the teachers at my school
This may be a horribly stupid question but it is an it is an honest one. How come we can not use SSD for Ram? Or is there a feasible way? It seems to me the future of computers would be in completely plug and play components easily upgraded at any time. If we had the right connection hubs.
Amazing video Eli. I own a Samsung 120gb and was the best thing i bought last year. You just forgot to mention that if a SSD has a low sequential write, it can be equaly fast than one that havê high sequencial write (if the user wont work with large files.)
Eli can you make a video on how to build a good computer. I've been wanting to build one for quite a while mainly for recording gameplays and uploading videos. Or maybe you could just let me know what would be good specs for a computer like that. Great video by the way
I think you read his comment wrong. What @Rangergun was referring to was his data and not his software. Those are 2 different things. Software can stay on the SSD or even the hard drive in which the Os is stored. As for his data (patient records, x-rays, pictures, contact info, etc). It is recommend to be on a separate drive or better yet a RAID array for redundancy. The reason for it is because if the drive that holds OS and/or software fail, the data will not be affective.
SATA SSDs and now M.2 SSD is hands down the best tech of the past 8 years. I switched to an SSD for OS 4 years ago and haven't looked back. Hard drives of course are great for media storage and backup
Would you say that the IOPS figure is more important for the read/write performance than the MLC vs. SLC war that's been going on ever since the SSDs went mainstream?
This was a good informative video. What I find so strange in today's computers is everyone abandoning optical drives to save their information. I was always told to save to hard copies when you can. Saving to external hard drives in my opinion is saving a soft copy subject to being corrupted and lost. I was talking to one of the techs at a local computer store and asked him where he saves his information and he said hard drives or the cloud. Saving to the cloud is worse because all your data and memories is now in the hands of a company can go out of business or can get bought out by another company. Some of the free cloud services have in their terms of service that they can use your images without your permission. I don't see how any of that still makes it your information. In my opinion people have become too trusting of third parties to hold their memories and data. I think its a big mistake to remove optical drives from computers in favor of giving everyone a cloud account for their data store needs. I guess when the Canadians finally decide to invade the United States and attack the power grid everyone will learn they actually own nothing at all if its not in their hands.
I have a ? For you. When these drives wear out, say for example a huge ssd drive that is responsible for extremely important tasks, is there something these bigger companies with power house servers use to back up the data and restore to a new drive in the event it wears out or is damaged? Or do these bigger networks back up to a master that can restore or something? Thanks for answering in advance ... ...
Enterprise drives are always backed up in some way or another, or run in raid arrays where parity data can rebuild any one lost drive, i'm sure there are even more complicated distributed cloud solutions as well, no one trusts one drive to save data, ever. Especially ssd's since they tend to fail catastrophically. 1 is none, 2 is one, that is the mantra for backup.
Good video ..very informative but i am little confused as average user as my laptop is on almost for 15 hrs every day and mainly excess web , so will it have impact on life as there will be lots of reading and writing everyday probably... and can you say little bit about TLC SSD and MLC SSD which one is better ? ? Thanks in advance
Great overview of the SSDs, thanks. I am still concerned by data corruption caused by power fault, what is you opinion on that issue ? Have you witnessed any bad experience regarding this issue ? You can Google this research paper from the Ohio State University : Understanding the Robustness of SSDs under Power Fault
I have been following your channel because the content has been really good; i just wondered do you think computers may be becoming more fragile or fit for purpose?
If you need the extra space is a SSHD a fair compromise, or is it better to just go with a normal HDD? I can't afford several hundred for a SSD when I need at least 500gb.
I want a standard hard drive that spins at 5400, 7200, 7400 RPM per second [video mark at 5:53], Thanks for the information on the SSD's. I will likely wait until the prices drop a bit more!
How do you handle a windows installation with multiple hard drives? I have a SSD, hybrid SSD Raid and 2Tb Standard HD in a single pc along with a scratch drive ssd. Windows seems to make it impossible to separate your boot files, program files and storage data. This is easy on linux, how do you do it on Windows?
Very good explanation about the benefits of using an SSD. I have SSD in my laptop, SSD in my office computer and SSD in the OS disk at home. Instant boot up and shutdown. Do you know if TRIM is supported in MAC OS?
I heard it's worth doing! Definitely gotta get a big one though. This current gen has ridiculously small hard drives considering the size of the games.
Eli, you talked about how fast memory would essentially wear away with a SSD , roughly how long would it take for the SSD in a computer used for gaming to wear away?
Best practice would on your main server have the ssd to store only the operating system and whatever software you are running. Then have 2 drives in RAID 1 or 4 in RAID 5. This is for redundancy. If one drive fails you can quickly replace it. If I was in your shoes, I would also have a NAS with 4 drives in RAID 5 to backup all your data.
My motherboard has SATA 3GB/s connections. Is getting a SATAIII SSD still worth it? Obviously it won't perform at 6GB/s like current SATAIII's do now, but would it still be a significant boost to my existing slow platter-style hard drive?
Hi Eli, I'm thinking about getting a SSD as well as an HDD, now if I put both in my computer, is the SSD only holidng my Program Files, and the HDD holding everything else? Because right now my Program Files are up to 300 gb and ssd are really expensive so I can only get a 128 gb one for my budget. Thanks in advance!
Eli, perhaps you should also note the heat generated by hundreds or thousands of HDD's must be covered by air conditioning which requires more electricity and additional cost. At the enterprise level this is a major concern.
I know this is an old video but I want to know if getting a second or third ssd drive will help the computer run more smoother and faster? Just wondering.
I need to build a pc for photoshop use so which option is to use SSD to improve the performance 1. install windows in photoshop temp on SSD or 2 install windows on normal HDD and set photoshop temp file on SSD
In fact, I was surprised because the RPM per seconds sounds really great. I just found out it really IS an acceleration unit that helps determine how fast a HDD is positioned from a stand-by state. So there is no such thing for a a SSD, but there is for a physical plated HDD, To be clear : how long does it take for a 15krpm device to reach the spead of 15krpm gives you it's acceleration ... Might it take 1sec, and you do have a 15krpm/s acceleration !
I have a dental office that I Admin all the IT stuff. I want to build them a new server. I talk to the people where they get there Dental Software from and they said don't put the DATA from the software into a SSD because maybe it wont save correctly. Do you think this is true? DATA=Patient records and XRAY images.
Very very good video, Eli! This was one of the best video's I've seen on UA-cam. To the point and very in detail. I learned a lot from this. Thank you.
why would you raid opposite speed drives? Raiding SSDs does increase speed, the more you throw in stripe the better. You can reach the PCIE SSD speed with enough SSDs in stripe, but individuals usually try to use the same speed and size drives when in raid
Could it be that if i have a slow hdd (5.9 score on the windows experience index, i took it from my 4y old pc) that it creates a bottleneck to my gpu so badly that when i'm playing bf3 on ultra that windows 7 thinks my GeForce GTX 660 Ti gpu isn't responding and crashes the gpu driver & the game because ?
Hello, is it only ssd with os should be left with at least 1/4 of its total capacity empty? What about ssd that's just used for storage, gaming, installing other programs, should those be left with 1/4 of its total capacity empty as well? or it's ok for it to be almost full. Will it affect its lifespan and its performance?
Good afternoon and great video. I'm looking into my next build and I just upgraded my GPU to an Nvidia GeForece GTX 660ti and a bluray drive. I have a Gigabyte GA-EP35C-DS3R motherboard and I was wondering what's a perfect SSD on a budget. I have a 500 GB master drive and a 320 GB slave drive and looking to upgrade without breaking the bank, what would you suggest and where can I purchase it from? Thank you very much and keep the videos going.
I just got through watching some guy do a graphic card and SSD upgrade on his PC. I have the same model (Dell XPS 8300)Before today I have never heard of a Solid State Drive but I am curious. I am just an average user.So you are saying a SSD helps the Hard Drive run more efficiently so it runs faster? I am doing a graphic card upgrade soon so I'm thinking of adding a SSD if it really would improve my pc performance.Would a SSD be used INSTEAD of a Hard Drive or in ADDITION to a Hard Drive? Would I need to install a new OS?
You're welcome, basically as a normal user we put the system files and applications for faster boot up. Whereas we put the data files on a normal hard drive.
Hay, I'm writing a technical report in school on Solid State Drives. Im going to look on how a SSD can benefit or not benefit in a workspace environment. What's your thoughts?
Eli...In buying a new 2014 MacBook Pro would it be best to upgrade RAM (from 4 to 8 or 16G) or upgrade to larger SSD hard drive (128 to 256G)? I use Lightroom 5 for photo editing... I can't afford to do both at the present time...which one would be most cost effective for a later upgrade RAM or hard drive? Thanks
I don't get your bashing of the HDDs defrag, it can improve the general speed of the PC and the load times of certain things. It also slows down the wear of the HDD, I think it's very useful especially for older PCs, it's not magic but it definitely helps. I defrag at least 2 times a year or more for daily used PCs.
I have 2 HD's & 1 SSD (new) on my system. I think I made the mistake of installing Win10 on the SSD before cloning it from the 1 old HD, making the SSD bootable. Now the old HD is not bootable. Though I can access my files from the old HD via File Explorer. I want everything (setting, apps, etc) from the old HD transferred to the new SSD. How can I remedy this without reinstalling Win10 onto the old HD (which will delete everything)? BTW, my BIOS shows the 2 SATA drives, 640GB HD & the 275GB SSD. But during the boot-up, the screen displays a message: HD Not Detected. How can that be?
i have a crappy Asus laptop that i've had to replace the hard drive in twice. At 6:36 i think that explains why. I definitely need this solid state drive.
Hi Thanks for the video! I want to swap my Crucial 525GB SSD from my 2010 Mac to my Toshiba laptop, but the Toshiba laptop only read the drive as 488GB and my Mac reads it as 525GB, why is that? What can be done so the SSD can be read as 525GB in my Toshiba Laptop?
yes thats what alot of people do runs much faster because ssd are really expensive and so unless u wana spend several hundred on a ssd big enough to store all ur files on then its best just to have 1 for OS and then normal HDD for files and games
Yea, I also have my OS on my 64gb SSD and all my user profile files (Docs, photos, desktop, etc...) on another 2Tb "files" drive. I'm also using a 128gb SSD just for games as well.
Eli, I've been watching your videos for about 2 months now and I think they are really good, at least for myself. Very informative and you talk to a broad audience. Keep it going, I may have questions later, and also just keep watching and learning.

i know a lot about solid state drives but i am still watching because its Eli's video
Extremely detailed and full of fun delivery
Gotta love the "RPM per second" comment.....for the most part, quite articulate......good job !
This guy needs WAAYY more views like atleast 750.000+
Thank you for this video! I not only got my answer from this video, I learned a few very important things!!! Great Job! I am now subscribed.

Thanks I have learned new things
Would you say that the IOPS figure is more important for the read/write performance than the MLC vs. SLC war that's been going on ever since the SSDs went mainstream?

Hey Eli have you researched or tested the SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW. I am thinking about this for my home system
Another outstanding video, respect! Can you make one for the NGFF M.2, my new machine is with that FF 42mm :)

just subscribed to this guy he really knows what he doing n he explains things not just buy this or no dont buy that
Eli, you are amazing! Thank you for all of your extensive vids and for sharing your knowledge and wisdom with us! :)
Do you need to remove the old hard drive that came with the computer when you install the solid state drive?
Great Video & Sound Quality.
Eli could you please do an "Introduction to Overclocking"? (sorry in advance if it's been done already :/).
This was a very helpful vid dude! Gained a sub for sure.

Hey Eli is there are portable Solid state drive. Aman
thanks for all your work for us.
Yea, some teachers I agree on. Others probably not much. I believe I learned a good bit about the business side from my intro to networking teacher.
Solid State Drives do they still have the same sata cables or are they different ???
It will only cost you around $8000...
You can get a WD Dual2 which has a full 128GB SSD for your OS and programmes and a 1TB HDD for everything else, all the size of a normal 2.5" HDD.
12:55
I thought SSD speeds are mostly the same.
The PCI express drives sound exciting - we are getting closer to the CPU.
Gosh I love your channel. So informative. Thank you so much.
Eli, perhaps you should also note the heat generated by hundreds or thousands of HDD's must be covered by air conditioning which requires more electricity and additional cost. At the enterprise level this is a major concern.
great vid as usual
I know this is an old video but I want to know if getting a second or third ssd drive will help the computer run more smoother and faster? Just wondering.
"Your hard drive is your slowest part of the computer" ... mind blown
I need to build a pc for photoshop use so which option is to use SSD to improve the performance 1. install windows in photoshop temp on SSD or 2 install windows on normal HDD and set photoshop temp file on SSD
"10,000 RPMs per second"~Eli the computer guy.
Parkour Nation I came in the comment section for this: thank you, sir ! maybe he meant " it's spinning at 10,000 rpm every second".
stompic1 Mot even because RPM stands for Rotations/Revolutions per minute.
+Parkour Nation You beat me to it. Well played.
*****
I just meant to compliment you on noticing the same thing I did but sooner. Jeez.
*****
Happens to the best of us. No worries man. Hope you're feeling better. You deserve it. :)

DATA=Patient records and XRAY images.
I've got an Asus VivoBook and the box says "500GB SATA + 24GB MSSD". Is SSHD the same as MSSD? If not which is the difference? Thanks
Very helpful please keep up the good work!!!
Hi Elie, You courses are very useful, congrats.
You make a great job ! ;-)
What's the name of that computer computer case?
Very very good video, Eli! This was one of the best video's I've seen on UA-cam. To the point and very in detail. I learned a lot from this. Thank you.
Excellent tutorial!
Love this guy's video's!

Isn't there software that helps with the read and write on SSD's by sharing something space with RAM or something like that?
Excellent Eli,,, I just bought a Samsung 1TB 840 EVO SSD and am doing some research before I attempt to install it. Thank you

Wow Eli thanks a lot! That was really helpful.
good intro to ssd's cheers :)
Why'd you get a bluray drive? Optical media is dead. Get a huge external HDD instead. Unless you really need a bluray drive.
Prithvi Singh
I like using an optical drive for program installs and for movies.
Thank you. Loved this class :-)
I just got through watching some guy do a graphic card and SSD upgrade on his PC. I have the same model (Dell XPS 8300)Before today I have never heard of a Solid State Drive but I am curious. +Doamino41 SSD is a storage device, basically its much more faster compare to a hard drive. Also price differs a lot and is quite expensive.
+Robert Wong
Thank you for the reply. I'm researching as much as I can about it before I upgrade. Thanks for the info
What's your thoughts?
for storing lots of data, go for the HDD, better price/GB. if you want much better performance but lower total storage space go for the SSD.
Awesome video.

Thanks
Do you have preferred laptop you could recommend?
So if they run cool, does that mean that I can replace my hard drive with a ssd and remove the fan that cools it (the fan is pulling air out)?
If i had all my average files on an SDD but my games on a 1tb HD would my games run faster or not? (I'm thinking not)
I don't get your bashing of the HDDs defrag, it can improve the general speed of the PC and the load times of certain things. Sir,Are SSD chips are similar with pendrive or memory stick chips or they are completely different?
Essentially the same technology, just SSD's are made of higher quality materials.
Dj4Life777 Longevity compared to USB drives are primarily one of the main differences
Thank You for the video, it was very helpful.
my 5 pin connector broke...is it ok to use the 8pin from the power supply to power my hard drives?
Hey Eli, Is it ok to defrag a hybrid drive? Does anyone know?
i have a crappy Asus laptop that i've had to replace the hard drive in twice.
What can be done so the SSD can be read as 525GB in my Toshiba Laptop?
is a good idea to have ssd to run the operate system and secondary HDrive to save files ,music,,,, ?
yes thats what alot of people do runs much faster because ssd are really expensive and so unless u wana spend several hundred on a ssd big enough to store all ur files on then its best just to have 1 for OS and then normal HDD for files and games
Yea, I also have my OS on my 64gb SSD and all my user profile files (Docs, photos, desktop, etc...) on another 2Tb "files" drive. I'm also using a 128gb SSD just for games as well.
