I quite like Rana's character design, but i personally think Alex fits the game a lot better. I know that Alex has less personality than Rana, but that helps Minecraft because you can project so many things about yourself into Alex as you play the game. You can't get this with a character design that implies she's her own person with a background. This is common in toy design, where toys with too much expression in their faces may weaken the child's ability to project their own imagination and stories into the toy. Minecraft wants to recreate that same effect with Steve and Alex.
I feel like the old characters could have looked so much better than the current ones if they were even just a little more polished. The current ones just feel stiff and unlively in my opinion.
