@@petalespue corruption, high crime rates, bad economy, discrimination and lynching of white farmers. Australia even considered issuing refugee visas to South Africans. A year ago I met a girl from South Africa and kept going about how I wanted to visit the country and she told me to never leave my hotel alone if I end up going and not to go anywhere else besides touristy places. She was living abroad at the time and was reluctant to go back and said she had used to the peace she had abroad and that didn't want to go back to a country where even babies get raped.
wow, that was a lot to read! South Africa definitely has its troubles and one definitely has to be careful (as with all places with such dramatic socio-economic differences between people) but honestly a lot of what you have been told/are saying is scaremongering - I would really recommend really more about South Africa and being critical to the sources that you get such information. (Though I will admit that I am, myself, really scared of Joburg) Furthermore a lot of the rhetoric being spread about white farmers is nonsense - in fact a lot of violence is aimed at migrant workers (from Zim, Malawi, Lesotho etc) which is an issue I really wish was discussed more! @@petalespue thanks, I will look into the issue of migrant workers. Prior to meeting that person from South Africa I thought the country was a paradise on Earth, but she painted such a grim picture. I guess it all looks way worse to me as I don't even have to lock the door of my house
