I made a zealot barbarian specifically for the warrior of the gods feature. We were in a campaign where at least one party member died every single session, and we only were ever looting copper off bodies. We desperately were trying to find ways to break that campaign after a Cr 14 fight while we were at lvl 3 with 1 level of exhaustion because DM kept interrupting our long rest.
My barbarian died by falling off a cliff 10 minutes into his first session because of a bunch of sirens. We quit that campaign. Haven’t seen that DM since

      1. Why did you group only loot copper off of corpses?
      2. You say that one player died after ever session, even though you also say that you played only one session with the dm.
      3. Did you start the campaign after level 3
      4. What was cr 14 fight?
      5. How could you get exhausted on the first session?

      1. Each time we looted a body our DM would say something like "you find 3 copper pieces". It's not like we were TRYING to only grab copper
      2. I did not say that, I said my barbarian died 10 minutes into HIS session, he was in fact my 3rd character in that campaign.
      3. I'm assuming
this is asking to clarify when I joined the campaign. I started with them from the start at lvl 1, my barbarian wasn't until lvl 5
      4. The fight was against 4 ogres, 9 bandits, 1 bandit leader, a manticore, and a hill giant. We had a party of 6 members, and that combat wiped half of them. THAT was when we started making characters to try and break the campaign because we realized our DM was a cruel bastard, and where I got the idea to make a zealot once my current character died, which happened 3 sessions later.
      5. Again, wasn't the first session, and even if it was, a session can have multiple encounters over several days. Our DM would constantly send bandits into our camps to disrupt our sleep. During the entire time I was part of the campaign, from 1-5th level, we only ever managed 3 long rests.
I lost interest and quit once my Zealot died, and the rest of my friends followed suit, with all 6 of us quitting that nightmare of a campaign.

We all knew it was BS, but we were trying desperately to make it work as outside the game we are all really close friends, and walking out would have made things awkward.

I think a tiny fix on the Berserker would be something akin to the Relentless Rage where if you have to succeed a Con Save (10, 15, 20 etc) after every time your frenzy rage ends. On a failure then you gain the exhaustion. This simple fix makes it more exciting for players to use and also makes it not just be an outright 1 shot or NPC character build.

    • @JorisVDC
      @JorisVDC 5 років тому +1

I think that this is a viable option for home brew. Yet I have seen many players' feedback on Frenzy and they just don't spam it.
It is a really powerful nova, so you should hold off on using it, which is perfect.
The only downside I see is that it can be very punishing if the opponents know exactly how to end the Barbarian's rage early. So if they are well informed or if the DM starts meta-gaming.

I'm currently a lvl 11 ancestral guardian in a campaign I've been in for a year now. I'm really loving it, probably my fav class I have ever played. Also, all my team is squishy spell casters and a ranger who has been downed almost every combat we have had. So the taunt like abilities are really useful. What I will say, which wasn't very clear in your explanation, is that the spirits only affect one foe per turn, just like with the zealots lvl 3 ability. Those two paths really are a mirror of each other, one acting as a dps and the other a tank

    • @JorisVDC

It is mentioned that the first enemy you hit with an attack is targeted by your ancestral guardians.
I agree with your assessment that Ancestral Guardian is the better tank and that Zealot is the better DPR.
I like Ancestral Guardian a lot too. I am now build him so that through features and multi-class into Champion fighter, he is raising his DPR. He is wielding a great axe and has an upgraded version of Savage Attacker to make his attacks really sting.

For the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian, he has no shortage of allies for his ancestors to protect, as the following will also be up front to tank/dish-out the damage - Strength-based Fighters, Paladins, other Barbarians, Strength-based Clerics (especially those with Heavy Armor proficiency) and Druids (especially those with a powerful beast in their arsenal), Monks, and Rangers (as these are the classes with high AC and/or Hit Points, as well as decent melee attacks). Same situation to those who give allies advantage and foes disadvantage if they don't attack the barbarian.

  • @andsoooo
    @andsoooo 5 років тому +1

I would say tundra storm aura is C tier. It's good in the beginning levels but you might want to switch elements later on. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 hit points can translate into 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 hit points because you resist bludgeoning, piercing, slashing damage (ice damage later on) while raging AND you can replenish those hp every turn. Giving those hp to people around you is just additional help. Also the book doesn't state that the temp hp go away if they leave your aura. I'm under the understanding that unless a feature that grants you temporary hit points has a duration, they last until they're depleted or you finish a long rest. It's an activated effect which consumes your bonus action, it doesn't state they last until your rage ends. Otherwise you could then argue that anyone that took damage from fire and storm aura could regenerate damage from those abilities after your rage ends.

I think a simple fix to it is to have your local Artificer make a version of the armor that is heavy, doesn't interfere with your Fast Movement, and let's you add your Dex modifier to your AC. I think that would mitigate a good portion of the bad, though not all of it.

I actually feel like the Sea Storm Herald is relatively strong. The third level Storm Aura ability is essentially a bonus action cantrip you can use every turn, except that your enemy will ALWAYS take damage since it halves on a successful save. Plus, unless you have Great Weapon Master and crit or kill, you don't really have much to do with your bonus action as a barbarian.
The Raging Storm ability isn't that great, but being able to knock someone prone without using one of your attacks isn't that bad either.

Rage Beyond Death plus Primal Champion means you're too angry to die, and this is a permanent thing.
You can Rage as a Bonus Action every "round" (six seconds), and you can't die from any effect so long as your Rage continues. All you need is a Cleric casting Greater Restoration once in a while to negate your Exhaustion penalties from going without rest to keep your Rage going.
Alternatively, you could just die every now and then, let the Cleric do a Raise Dead and feel good about doing their job.

Sure not something like the Airbender itself as that's clearly a monk type but a more brutal, primordial version of it.
It also would help if the Storm Herald had more domains and could switch the domain during a short or long rest.

I have written an 8 page document (will probably finish around 10-11) showing the Damage of a Zealot, Storm Herald (Sea), and a Frenzied Berserker and what I think will surprise most people is that the Storm Herald is never more than 1-3 points behind the Zealot in Average damage calculations (even eventually surpassing the Zealot at higher levels, with 3 out of 4 options out passing the Zealot on Average). I also factored in options with and without GWM and Reckless Attack for all 3 classes comparing level 3, 5, 10, 16, & 20.
The Storm Herald I think suffers from a bigger problem in Flavor within the Mechanics than I think it truly does in Raw Damage potential or even in Tactical options. Being able to knock an opponent Prone can be very powerful in the right Circumstances and the Resistances (albeit somewhat situational) will never be pushed away as an option.
I overall see the Storm Herald as a failing within RP elements and cooler/thematic features, instead of a weaker option when we consider Damage and Mechanical viability. I will note that I do think the Tundra and the Desert options suffer more than the Sea option does, unless the Campaign features one of those Climates as the Theme.

I don get why Totemic Attunement lvl 14 Tiger get's C rating while the Frenzy feature get's F rating. They give the same benefit, a bonus action attack. While Frenzy limits it's uses, until greater restoration comes online but there is no conditions, other than raging. I feel like you need to build a character to make the most use out of Tiger. Which has a higher opportunity cost. You would need Mobile feature or something to make sure that you can dart around on the battlefield. Which is somewhat limiting your ability to effectively tank, you are more going to play like a damage dealer who can seek out the best target. More like an harass skirmisher who can annoy the ranged and spellcasting foes.
Frenzy and the Berserker build has great synergies with GWM and Sentinel, which are top picks for features on a tank.

Zealot is the no-brain damage dealing with very useful ways of boosting and staying in the fight.
It comes with less tactical impact on the battles, as you just kill stuff faster than another barbarian would.
Ancestral Guardian, let's you tank and comes with more tactical impact by effectively taunting an enemy and being able to block some damage.
This can mess up tactics far more than higher damage output does.
Since a smart and/or well informed enemy will know that the zealot is very difficult to take out, you will consider throwing meat shield at him, while your real damage dealers go after more squishy targets.

yeah and so you do not need to worry about the thought of dying and can do even more barbarian type stuff without any worry and because of that reason makes me feel that zealot barbarians are the most barbarian barbarian subclass. To understand that better think of how the college of lore bards is the most bardic bard subclass. I hope I explained that well.

It's all about scaling. In early levels, as in tiers 1 and 2 of play, the martial classes tend to dominate.
However... they scale linearly. Caster get exponentially stronger as they level, specially the cleric, which is basically every class jammed into one, and can do anything the other classes can, sometimes better.
Not to mention how Rangers and monks (aside from vote of poverty, that's op af ) eat dust compared to everyone else.
It's all dependant on your table though. If the DM gives every monster Magic Resistance (pass test or spell Is absorbed completely) and lowers some of the AC / Damage from monsters, well... Not to mention, you die real fast in 3.5e because AC means nothing as you level.
I can go on further, but I think this can suffice.

@@yanderenejoyer It's simply not true. Spellcasters get one of two mega effects per day and that's it. Plus most of the most powerful effects are save or suck so if the baddies make the save that spellcaster is out of juice with nothing to show for it. In contrast, martials can chew through enemies all day long. Clerics are only so good as DMs choose not to target them for fear of TPK, but they really aren't that powerful.
At mid tiers Rangers easily outstrip a lot of classes in terms of damage, its not until high tier that they start to wane - though that is easily rectified by multiclassing. Monk would keep pace with the other if DMs allowed it, but far too often DMs give monsters huge Con saves, or make them immune to stun, or limit the number of times a monk can use stunning strike per turn which TOTALLY nerfs the monk. All of a monk's power comes from their ability to get off those stunning strikes, if your DM doesn't let you do that they are crippling your character.

While Totem Warrior is probably the best barbarian mechanically, it can be really janky flavor-wise. It shoehorns your character into the typical "uncivilized savage" archetype, and while the pick and choosing between totems is great mechanically, the RP aspect is really subdued. Why did the bear totem barbarian take eagle attunement at 14th level? Because it's really good, even though he religiously chose bear until that point. I'll agree Ancestral Guardian is just great, and filling a niche the barbarian doesn't usually fill, though I would personally rate Zealot above. Unlike Ancestral Guardian who is just very well designed and thematic, Zealot needs your DM to work with you on that one. Especially on Warrior of the Gods, but the RP possibilities are insane. From a century-old warrior brought back by some priests, to the mercenary seeking a quick payout as an adventurer to retire, reaches level 3, and learns that retirement is not happening. Ever. Warrior of the Gods opens a lot of great RP options. Though I'll agree that unless the party is in dire need of reinforcements and asks Tempus for the names of any Zealot who died in less than 200 years and has a couple of days (or you're just playing a low funds campaign) the mechanical effect is weak. I also like that it opens up some more character types to the barbarian class, like a civilized mercenary or soldier. As an added bonus it also salvages Persistent Rage. It won't make the zealot invincible period, but nobody in no way fucks with your one minute of invincibility. I don't think it promotes Persistent Rage higher than C tier, but when you're literally unkillable being able to drop out of a Banishment at 0 HP (or any other "prevent the 0 HP barbarian from attacking and ignore him for one turn" trick) still raging, still alive and still swinging is decent. Situational unless your DM really wants to down the barbarian from time to time, but still decent.

Isn't spiked retribution at 14th level worse than the desert storm-aura at 14th level
I mean it cost's a bonus action, but as a barbarian you won't use bonus actions that often anyway
Meanwhile the spiked retribution may activate automatically, but it doesn't scale at all with higher levels
and nonmagical piercing damage is just not good at that level

Though, if the DM does not make creatures clump up on the clearly open barbarian, giving advantage to everyone against him... After all, monsters tend to take openings, even if they would be feints, and warriors are very capable of taking advantage (literally, and figuratively) of an exposed opponent.

Ok as a barbarian main after watching both videos I can tell you don't play barbarians much, to be fair most people don't play it much and those that do try it go for the level 3 bear totem and then later on complain about not taking enough damage. I honestly feel the berserker gets too much hate because as a barbarian your job is front line heavy damage dealing tank and the berserker is that to a t. Ancestral guardians is good if you want to play a protector, totem is (meant) for a variety, storm is for battlefield control, battle rager is for grappling and if you dropped con, zealot is for those who want to be a crazy diety worshipper, and berserker is for high damage per round. As for you saying about going into rage being a downfall for most of the abilities in this video at least, in combat a non raging barbarian is a fighter who doesn't need armor and has no subclass, if you look almost all the subclass features are for during your rage.

      Very well put together.
      I have the seem feeling.
Too easily the role of the Barbarian is broken down to either taking a lot of damage or dealing a ton of damage, each and every turn.
Berserker doesn't seem sexy as it amplifies most of the good features of the Barbarian, it's like putting more barbarian into your barbarian.
If you give a berserker GWM and Sentinel feature, he is a force to be reckoned with. GWM makes it easy to go through multiple smaller foes, without using Frenzy and offers another way to use the bonus action.
Sentinel let's you become more effective in taking out only enemy and create a catch22 for him: you hit me? I retaliate! You hit someone else? I hit you! You try to sneak away? I hit you and reduce your speed to 0!
Di you feel the theme coming?
I am very glad that there are a lot of options for the roles that the Barbarian can fill effectively in 5e.
Only the storm Herald feels underwhelming since you can only switch domain when you level up. I would have liked it to be changeable each short or long rest.
Now I am afraid that the usefulness is too dependent on the campaign and your DM.

@@satiricalsatyr9463 The Wild Soul Barbarian in the the Unearthed Arcana is interesting. Pair it up with an orc or half orc and you got a barbarian who desires to become a god due to random magic energies coming off them. Yet it may work well whenever they release the Eberron orc variant.
Yet it would be neat to see new orc subraces. They could reintroduce the Ondonti give them the half orc's ability that allows them to be dropped to 1 hp and expand on their lore.
For example Eldath could have been part of the orc pantheon, but during the 100 year gap the Ondonti pantheon came into existence and Ondonti kingdoms came into being. Barbarian Ondonti could be like the mercs or army heralds of battle that rage against evil in honor of their father deity that is married to Eldath.
