My wonderful son makes an unannounced visit during this video! Be sure to give him a thumbs up!
In this video I react to the song called The Glowing Man, as part of my full album react to Swans.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Easily one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard. No metal band I've listened to has gotten quite close to just how earthquakingly huge some of Swans can feel. I think it's Swans usage of guitars almost as percussive instruments, their usage of purely noise passages, and the sheer length of time some of those passages goes on that just makes it feel so gigantic.

    • @deanwolfechannel

Excellent point, the heaviness is distinct

So on point! I discovered this about two months ago and to me they created the pure sonic representation of an earthquake, specially with these 8 monumental walls of sound)? starting 23 minutes in.

The stamina is amazing. Caught them on this tour (or To Be Kind tour) and I was really impressed with the endurance. They left everything on the stage. Also the volume was beyond anything I'd ever heard at a live performance. I had foam earplugs in and the bass on "Cloud of Unknowing" was hitting my auditory nerve through my nose and mouth like I was in some kind of pressure chamber. "The Glowing Man" was the finale and it was literally astonishing.

Same here. The Roundhouse, May 27, 2017. The best gig I've seen without question, Swans in their Deliquescence tour. Life-changing.

One of their best songs and one of the best songs to be recorded under the umbrella of rock. Period. The only stuff I’d put above it is some of their live material(especially from Swans Are Dead). Listening to The Glowing Man intimately is a real brain altering experience, among many things. I am elated to see a reaction to it! It was a pleasure relistening to every second again along with you!

Holy shit, never expected a reaction vid to this. This album is the most transcendent piece of art I've ever experienced, even more than later John Coltrane stuff. The song works better within the album, so if you ever have 3 hours lol, just smoke some weed (or don't, whatever you want, but something to get u in a calm/meditative/relaxed space could b cool) and melt into this album. I want to recommend other songs from it if u don't have the time, but honestly it's best to just wait until you have the time for the whole album experience (though if I had too, I'd pick Frankie M and the second track on the album). The lyrics along with are pretty great too. Also, while listening in headphones is great, I think listening on good speakers for this works even better. Such a gigantic sound

They have two songs (on studio albums) that would exceed your video chip’s maximum length. Fortunately, they’re not on this album. 😛

The beginning kinda reminds me of ZEP'S "No Quarter" while the upeat section makes me think of CAN. Love SWANS.

For the CAN comparison that does make sense, that's some good krautrock in that section

You should listen to their album, To Be Kind, next. It’s the most similar, production wise, to this album but, it’s much more intense like this song and alot of the time, groovier.

? more difficult than the other two?
TBK is the most accessible. difficult, but still less so than The Seer or the Glowing Man's hypnotic force

    SWANS...:)
SWANS is one of the most original and unique bands playing heavy music (whatever you define it).
With such simple means they achieve incredible depth -"Power For Power" ("Filth" 1983)
On the other hand, they can be so lyrical ......The Burning World 1989
I listen to VERY different music. I was intensely interested in alternative and avant-garde music in the 90s.
What I remember from "heavy playing" is undoubtedly (next to SWANS) Zeni Geva and Kobong.

Its weird reacting to this kind of song because its very much a trance like state instead of something that you can analyze and say why its good. Its the kind of music to lose yourself in and gain access to some kind of headspace.
