Something I'm learning is: Don't be afraid to walk away from an offer. It can be very stressful to have someone price everything out for you because now it feels like you're obligated to trade something, but you're not. At any point during a trade, you can just simply walk away.
They absolutely ripped you off. Those two pokemon center magneton promos are about $40 US apiece. And they only offered you 50%. That’s low too. Most shops trade in at 60% at the lowest. Bet you they overcharged for the products you got in trade too. Hard to support local businesses when they do stuff like this
Game stores do feel like pawn shops nowadays. I get there's costs but it still sucks. I usually just trade, sell and buy with individuals rather than stores for this reason
The burden of THEM paying THEIR overhead costs if on THEM, not YOU. Why trade cards to a store for under 50% valuation when you can trade to another non-shop owner for 80% at worst? We can support shop by buying their product, sure, but to give them a huge discount on our cards as well? Thats a double dip. not worth exploring for me. Its not even worth the convenience of selling your entire collection in 1 transaction.
FYI, if you have any sort of social anxiety, its VERY easy to feel pressured into selling or to sell just to expedite your departure from the social situation. Most such collectors have been there at some point.
One of LCS offers 37-55% "depending on the cards" I laughed out loud when the employee told me 37%. It's a great place to buy singles, but a terrible place to sell or trade.
I work at a card shop! Definitely don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm always happy to show my math and be 100% transparent about the price of cards and what TCGPlayer says.
I feel like shops like those enjoy ripping off people. I think the majority of people don't know what they have so they feel that anything is better than nothing. I just went to my local card shop the other day to sell some cards. They brought in their "expert" because they were so valuable and rare. The 4 cards sell for $145 each (us) all day long on ebay and they offered me $40 cash or $45 store credit. I just took my cards and left. Now I have them listed on ebay for $500. It's just not worth it to mess with local card shops anymore. Plus all their inventory was marked up in price. Just wasn't a good experience.
You should've known the value of your cards if you were looking for a trade....or just pay cash for the items. Hopefully you learned a lesson. At least that would be a positive outcome.
Everyone who is into cards and bought and sold cards have made this mistake at least once in their life. He’s honest about it. No big deal you live and you learn. Nothing terrible happened to him he’s fine
Yeah, tried selling some cards to a store a while ago, they only offered me 40% market value. Absolutely deplorable, honestly, I would’ve been ok with 70% market value, but I just felt insulted at that point, walked right out.
yea local card shops are scum these days when it comes to purchasing i had the EXACT same experience recently. just dont trust them. they arent your friends, they arent your little pokemon nerd club buddies, they are money-makers at the same time they arent really evil or wrong because at the end of the day you CAN say no its just a weird dynamic and no one is gonna give you the benefit of being new to the hobby or dumb they are just gonna give you a 10million card stare and try to use you for profit
Wowwwwww. That's crazy. Less than 50 for trade is wildly cruel. My local brick and mortar lgs does 70% for trade and 56% for cash out. I do 70% typical and 80% for trade in at my booth for hot cards, cash out for about 60% typically or 70% for hot cards.
there are definitely plenty of LGSs here in the US that take trade ins at less than 50%, it's honestly surprising to me how many people are willing to take that. You will absolutely get a better deal at card shows, many vendors are just hobbyists themselves and aren't necessarily looking to squeeze as much profit out of trade ins as possible. Sometimes you can even get straight-up trades if you want to trade for a card of similar value.
bro i did the exact same thing a few months ago and felt like complete shit. i still do honestly.. such a mistake! never again haha. just came across your vis and love them man! you got a sub here!!
Just got back into collecting and been trading up a lot of my older stuff and dupes for newer set IRs and stuff. Went to two LGS first one 100% ripped me off on the trade ins then gave me all the singles I picked out at no extra cost even though I was a good bit over they’re estimated trade value still alil ripped for the value I gave em but they made it better with that. Second one was absolutely awesome amazing trade in values, incredibly transparent. No taking things to a back room and pulling numbers out their butts just straight up view sold listings with the customer online and offering fair great deals. 70-80% trade in depending on the card.No huge mark up on singles either every single is looked up and priced market value before sale. Only thing was the first store would take in trades of any condition the other much better store only accepts light play or better and they are very strict with what is light play or not. Shoutout to the Safari Zone, y’all are legit !!
I just had a similar situation yesterday. Where I actually knew the value of the cards I had and was trading in. And when it finally came time to trade they were only offering me a 60% trade in value. Now for me that was an instant NO. Because the cards I was trading in were not only high value cards but the top Chase cards in those sets. I think 80-85% percent would've been more ideal since those cards could easy be sold.
All the vending videos have gotten people to expect 70-80% trade-in value when as you say, LCSs have other expenses that they need covered. 40-60% is fairly common for many LCSs. Great video overall! We all make mistakes throughout our journey and it's awesome you're helping to teach a lesson to others.
I realized I had only purchased from big box stores like Walmart and Best Buy, and decided to check my local game store. Is it normal for them to try and sell WAY above market value for things? Packs of paldean fates and brilliant stars at $9, 151 packs at $13, singles at 40% over market value.. I bought an overpriced ETB and left. I couldn’t believe it.
Brand new subscriber (like legit subbed right before i commented here) just wanted to say keep doing your thing brother. You have "IT" just remember me when you make it big 🤣 gonna watch your entire log of pokemon videos over the next few weeks. Enjoy the journey brother. You are on your way to the top! 👊
The other day i traded my SIR ninetails for a Pikachu Jungle 1st Edition (ungraded).. i felt like i got ripped off after i left but then realized i can pull that ninetails again today if i go buy some obsidian flames packs ... felt good to secure a piece of history. Thanks for the video !
It’s okay man at least you didn’t sell a legendary reverse holo Charizard I got completely scammed, I had no idea when I got back into Pokemon I had a Grail card
I'm not supporting any place offering 50%. They're buying based on the low end market then re-selling it a lil above market. So w/that store a $100 card they'll say is $70-80 then give 50% of that. THEN sell the card for $110. I usually say every card is $1 unless it's a $5+ card then add up my cards from there.
When I was 15 I went to trade in some Pokemon cards and they offered me less than 50% which was insane, I knew what they were worth and didn’t take the deal, and than overpriced products I find it hard to believe people actually “support” these LGC. even though ur basically getting slapped in the face for free.
Definitely knowing the value you want or are willing to take is important. You have to remember that lgs are small business though, so the second they take your cards they lose 20% to VAT, about 5% to various fees and the risk the cards don’t sell. Offering anything more than 50-60% would be impossible for them. The magnetons are a shame but almost definitely just valued as normal ETB promos, probably down to lack of knowledge on the difference.
When my nephew found this video on UA-cam and called me and his exact words were "Uncle this guy shouldn't be in the Pokemon Card business at all" just by watching this video and he also said he's to nice of a guy and there's some people out there that take advantage of people like that You need to be straight up and show them you know your card business I was really surprised my little nephew shared that with me he's gonna be a future Pokemon Hustler when he gets a little older but other then that a interesting video to watch....
That's a story respectfully I would have kept to yourself, my friend. Or change it up at least... telling someone chasing a dream to not be in that bussiness... no matter who said it. He's new to the hustle and he will learn from this. Much love friend
I could be wrong.... Lol The price on oaldean fates was 3.95, not 5.95. someone shouldve corrected it lol. But you can tell if you compare the 3 and the 5. 5 is clearly more elongated on the top section, where as the 3 has the top line almost horozontal and on top of the other. My handwriting is bad and inconsistent and this happens eith me alot. My 5s are all over the place lol
I feel very fortunate, our lcs offers great trade in value & will flat out tell us if they feel we'd get far more on ebay vrs what they can offer. We buy loads of singles from them.
Totally ripped off. I know everyone’s going to tell you but don’t feel bad about telling them no. I’m all for supporting local card shops, but you have to know which store are the one to support. Also be weary about buying loose packs unless you trust the store. Some stores stock dead packs just to sell instead of pulling packs from BB/ETB.
They should’ve given at least 70% for trade in credit. I’m all for supporting local stores but not when they give you half of what it’s worth. Best advice I can give is trade to other collectors for whatcha want at trade nights.
Walked in with 2 PSA 9 surfing and flying pikachu. They were valued at 25-30 USD each. They offered 10 for each😂 You have to learn to say no or walk away and evaluate options
Thanks! The footage of me out and about was just my iPhone, but talking to cam was a Sony Alpha a5100 that I used to use for streaming. Have it hooked up to my computer and record through obs. Pretty easy and not too expensive :)
@ hey man, growth on the channel is going insane! Congratulations 🤞🏼 is there anyway I could reach out to you for a bit of advice? Would really appreciate it
Is that geek retreat, just going off the purple door frame. I'm from the UK and I warn people don't use geek retreat they are the worst of the worst for trade in pricing I believe it's 20% cash price for trades they are scum when it comes to trade in prices and they act like they're for the community
Which area is the store in? I don't want to give your location away, but I think I recognise your accent from a certain part of the North-West with two underwater tunnels merging it with a large city...
Live in US, every shop claims 80% in my area, yet every number I have been quoted is between 45-55%. I do think trading to a LGS is always the worst way to offload, and their percentages are way too low for how high they already markup regular MSRP products. So tl;dr no it really isn't okay what LGS' do as it isn't a cost coverage method, it's purely them 2xing their cap on trades.
Your observation of the LGS cards being upmarked and now being down in market is also correct; Every LGS prices their singles when they get them and never changes the price as the price they paid or traded for has already covered their overhead. You can get cards very cheaply doing this the right way if you know your prices, but if you don't, it's a very easy way to lose money.
@LuckyJCards You've got a lot of options there honestly, especially with how much Japanese Europe gets so it's definitely worth it for the physical financial incentive, and the clicks. People love watching investment tips, it got MysticRips his personal channel to be fair.
They must have done you the way this crooked shop near me tried. They would price the cards at the minimum price not the market price and then was going to do 50%. But I did already had mine priced so I walked out and found a new shop that did 60-70% market and they pretty much took in everything and didn’t pick and choose what they wanted
there is an attitude in this community that lets LGS get away with anything for some reason. Except for selling sealed above retail, the one thing they actually have to do unlike over and undervaluing cards.
Wasn’t research that was the problem, I knew their worth individually before going (the magneton ETB promo etc) I just floundered in the moment and hadn’t come up with a price for everything overall. That’s what made it worse, I knew their worth I was just too trusting/an idiot
@@LuckyJCards I feel ya man, either way glad you recognized it and can make adjustments in the future! Good Luck on your Pokémon Journey :) Earned my sub
Usually..... A game store, a good one, will have other customers other than you in the store. Usually also, interested in the same things as you. You may end up getting a much better, sometimes in your favour, deal involving them. Although saying that... My local store is pretty great. They sell cards typically for their market value, their stock is maybe at most 5% mark-up, and they do trade-ins for far better than 50%. Around the 70% margin, depending on what you're looking to part with. So depends on your local area ALOT. But yeah, they gotta make a living too and sometimes you lose out, but this was a huge loss. Edit: HOWever... If you go in like you did, which was basically sucker-noob-magoosh that acted like he didn't know a thing about the cards he had at hand, then people di try to take advantage of you.
Thanks for the video. Yes they ripped you off but like you say it was all on you. Now, You never ever go and sell your product to LGS. You support them only when there is no other place to buy. support LGS is not for Pokemon Collectors bro. they 150% the prices of Pokemon and offer only 50% for trade in, buy.
"I like gambling" spoken like a true degenerate 😂😂😂😂 One of us, one of us! My first question whenever I walk into a new LGS or a vendor "Are you open to negotiation on singles"
Watched a few of your vids already and really like your channel and you going through your journey but man please know the value of your cards next time please man 😭🙏
I just did a trade at my local shop (North Florida) but I’m hesitant to blow my spot up 😂 but he hit me with market value and we just did even swaps on a few items. For example I traded my minty terapagos stellar crown SIR for the palkia gold card straight up.
not from personal experience but from other videos ive seen the least theyve ever was 60% and sometimes if youre trading for product theyll give you some kind of deal on it
you got ripped off but of course, you were having a great time with your friends that's why you forgot about your cards and most specially, your focus was on Treecko cards that you got
They ripped you off at least for like 30-40 pounds there! They gave you 53% of your 170 pond value! I think you should have at least gotten 70% - 75% on the cards you were offering to trade in. Also for the future just allways ask up front on how much their trading % is and just say no if its under 7 0 - 75%
And on bigger cards the trade value / selling % has to go up to 85% or even 90% 1 more thing to add, even if you dont like the Pokemon Center ETB promos, keep them sealed and sell / trade for them in 1 year or so can earn you good value!
Stamps bro always look for stamps when buying and selling.. to be fair they might not of noticed the stamp promos thought they was jus regular promos but still vary low offer especially for store credit.. lesson learned tho
You got ripped off bad dude…..Trade in should be 80% cash at 70%…. Use either price charting or collectr apps, input all your cards and you have live market values
I know people gotta make a buck, but last week my LGS told me they are paying 50-60% of market on sealed SWSH. I kindly thanked them and left for the last time. No hard feelins, just bidness.
I put a lot of time into the title and thumbnail, comparing it to other UA-camrs out there, and spent a while optimising the intro so it was interesting for a new viewer. But obviously there’s some luck involved too. Subs and amount of uploads don’t matter, as long as you’re making content people are watching then UA-cam will reccomend it to more people
@ I assure you I watched the entire video. Your clickbait title is damaging to the LGS- stick to target online- you won’t have to talk to anyone and it’s not likely you’ll take them down with your poor takes.

Good negotiation tactic too. Often they'll realize their trick didn't work and offer a more reasonable price. If not, don't go back.

They are ripping off people on their Digimon also, Matt Ishida ALT $26 that card is like $11 rn, and same with Tai Kamiya ALT. Man I’d be pissed bro

there is an attitude in this community that lets LGS get away with anything for some reason. Except for selling sealed above retail, the one thing they actually have to do unlike over and undervaluing cards.
I stay away from card shops, shiii is to expensive
Great life lesson to learn. Do you research before selling ANYTHING
Do you do the atrioc deep dives? if not you sound exactly the same
Usually.....
Where was this
Wait a minute are you the guy who makes some videos with Stanz? You have the exact same voice. I think it's Canths or something. Also yeah,
A card is only worth what someone will pay you for the card
Thanks for the video. Yes they ripped you off but like you say it was all on you. Now, You never ever go and sell your product to LGS. You support them only when there is no other place to buy. support LGS is not for Pokemon Collectors bro. they 150% the prices of Pokemon and offer only 50% for trade in, buy.
"I like gambling" spoken like a true degenerate 😂😂😂😂
One of us, one of us!
My first question whenever I walk into a new LGS or a vendor "Are you open to negotiation on singles"
Yeah, learnt from my mistakes. was just too excited to buy more pokemon cards lol
Is that Mrwilliamo!?
They won't be more likely to give you a discount next time. They'll be more likely to see you as an easy target 😅
Hard lesson learnt hopefully
Watched a few of your vids already and really like your channel and you going through your journey but man please know the value of your cards next time please man 😭🙏
80% is a normally what LGS charge around my area
That was kind of what I was expecting, so less than 50% was a surprise lol
@@LuckyJCardsAll LGS in my area do about 65%-70%. Under 50% is ridiculous. Good learning lesson!
I just did a trade at my local shop (North Florida) but I’m hesitant to blow my spot up 😂 but he hit me with market value and we just did even swaps on a few items. For example I traded my minty terapagos stellar crown SIR for the palkia gold card straight up.
My local card shop pays me %70 I’m from Joliet Illinois in the United States
not from personal experience but from other videos ive seen the least theyve ever was 60% and sometimes if youre trading for product theyll give you some kind of deal on it
you got ripped off but of course, you were having a great time with your friends that's why you forgot about your cards and most specially, your focus was on Treecko cards that you got
I'm feeling the pain for you watching this 😅
They ripped you off at least for like 30-40 pounds there! They gave you 53% of your 170 pond value! I think you should have at least gotten 70% - 75% on the cards you were offering to trade in. Also for the future just allways ask up front on how much their trading % is and just say no if its under 7 0 - 75%
And on bigger cards the trade value / selling % has to go up to 85% or even 90%
1 more thing to add, even if you dont like the Pokemon Center ETB promos, keep them sealed and sell / trade for them in 1 year or so can earn you good value!
Stamps bro always look for stamps when buying and selling.. to be fair they might not of noticed the stamp promos thought they was jus regular promos but still vary low offer especially for store credit.. lesson learned tho
LoL, you definitely ripped yourself off. You could have said no and walked away. Remember, you could declined the offer anytime 😂😂😂
You got ripped off bad dude…..Trade in should be 80% cash at 70%…. Use either price charting or collectr apps, input all your cards and you have live market values
Buy the cards you want. Way more satisfying
Maaaaannnn. You need to do research first. Also worth noting you don't need accept an offer.
wait i recognize that store i swear that's jester games 0:20
I only sell at 120% trade value 😊
You deserve more subs.
Just started, so it’ll get there! Thanks :)
They took your stuff like you were kids at recess
I know people gotta make a buck, but last week my LGS told me they are paying 50-60% of market on sealed SWSH. I kindly thanked them and left for the last time. No hard feelins, just bidness.
you got cooked bruv
3 videos, 159 subs, thousands of views. How?
I put a lot of time into the title and thumbnail, comparing it to other UA-camrs out there, and spent a while optimising the intro so it was interesting for a new viewer. But obviously there’s some luck involved too.
Subs and amount of uploads don’t matter, as long as you’re making content people are watching then UA-cam will reccomend it to more people
@@LuckyJCardsyes yes it does come cross like you’ve done a degree in UA-cam 😂 quality editing!
Just say no ?
14:34 I got NM for $50 😂😂😂
Love snorlax
Silly posh toff! Out of your depth but have money so jumping on the bandwagon.
You didn’t come prepared and it’s the game stores fault? Sure.
Feel like you didn’t watch the part where I said over and over “it’s my fault, completely on me”
@ I assure you I watched the entire video. Your clickbait title is damaging to the LGS- stick to target online- you won’t have to talk to anyone and it’s not likely you’ll take them down with your poor takes.
They absolutely knew it was a low ball AF offer@@TheTCG_Show
This is fucking hilarious 😂😂🎉
