This review nails most people’s thoughts - the M4 CSL is just not special enough. Limited in production numbers doesn’t make it more special, it just makes it rarer and appeals to the people that look at cars as investments. It’s like playing Pokémon red/blue and finding a wild Porygon - rare, but no one wants one to fight with. My money easily goes to a used R8, or saving a bit more for a new winged 992 GT3 which is what I’ve opted for as a G80 M3 owner. Amazing video as usual!
Problem is actually buying a 992 gt3 or a gt4 rs ... you wont find one for less than $250k on the used market. This kinda feels like the m4 gts and that car still only sells for around MSRP.
I agree to an extent. You have to think about who its marketed for the M4 GTS was did do well because it honestly wasn't that far from an M4C all they did was give it a wing and added distilled water to pump the power which a simple flash would do to a normal M4C. M4 CSL however has a weight advantage and its for the track. Lastly how many people even track their track cars? Not many so just like you said the people who buy this will probably buy em and store em.
I would definitely go for the m5 cs over this cause the m5 cs isn’t that much slower around a track but is so much more practical and would be a better car for me cause i would want to daily drive it. The m5 cs also looks a lot better.
I believe there is a huge issue with that V8 engine, obviously there are no official reports, so I may be wrong. But I have heard about multiple S63 engine failure. I did not buy M5C simply of the S63, even though the performance must be amazing the fear of the engine dying on me is too much for me :D
Lmao the C8 Z06 is lower to the ground than the M4 CSL, lighter, better aero, also C8 looks a million times better than a big 3700 pound car. Thats why Thatdudeinblue said he will NEVER compare a Corvette to a Mustang. Not even the same weight class. A M4 has no business trying to compete on a track with cars that weigh less than 3500lbs. I imagine a C6 Z06 with todays modern tires will corner better than a new M4😂
@@GrimReaper1675 as an owner of a C6 Z06 with PS4 S tires on it, you might be right. What I can say is the C6 z06 is VERRRRRY twitchy when getting aggressive through corners with t/c and s/c off. Even with the modern tires, it almost needs to break traction to feel safe. It might corner as well, but I’m sure the M4 is more confidence inspiring.

well its reasonably priced , its a little less expensive than a amg gtr and a little slower, and its even less expemnsive than 911 gt3 and a little more slower, but obviously if price is the only thing u look at than u can buy the cheap alternatives like z06 which is ;likely faster than all of these but manufactured at a lesser quality

The performance is definitely there on this one and that's probably the best I have ever heard the modern turbocharged BMW inline 6 sound from the factory. I wish my M340i sounded as good. Too bad about that price tag though!
Seeing this car it kinda reminds me off the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm version. Would be amazing to see a drag race with both cars and see how well they stack up to each other on a track test
Thats exactly the car it should be compared to. Throw the Jaguar Project 8, even the CLK63 AMG Black Series into it. And leave price out of it. Its just a specific type of car.
@@ScullyD-ee9jk agreed. These cars are not just about how fast you can go (and they are fast), but how they make you feel. Why else would one buy a super expensive sports saloon? It's the city / daily driving, NOT the track.
I've owned three BMW 4-series, so far, and there's no way I'd pay almost $150k for another one. For that money I'd buy a new Corvette AND a Cybertruck - that covers utility, style and performance. Nothing against people who are willing to pay this, but man, again, I've owned three 4-series, and the entire lure of them was that you got an awesome looking and performing car for like $10k more than a Mustang GT or a Camaro SS. When you're talking like $80-90k more, that's pretty insane. But hey, it's not my money, so spend it however you want, I'll still love seeing these on the road.
I LOL'd at the price. Not only is that insane but every other car you listed is not only extremely competent but also better looking and sounds much, MUCH better. But hey at least those seats don't look like they have a hearing feature you need a subscription to use on top of the $170K
I have to say that the front looks better with the sportier appearance. It just looks more apropriate on the car this way. This is definitely my favourite of the M3/M4 family.
When you said the M5, I would always probably go for a 5 series lower power trim than you would. But man I've been in love with the 5 series for decades.. Good call!
Except you can't possibly get one for $140k. There was one on the floor when I picked up my 340 this past weekend, and they wanted $50k over list. The sales guys were laughing about people calling and offering $20-25k over list.
James, I absolutely have to say this, you're getting absolutely amazing at drifting around corners!!! Thomas, I absolutely have to say this, you have my highest respect for always being so passionate AND remaining impartial. This car must have been eyes watering for someone who truly loves BMW: the M4 CSL seems to be exactly what a real M car should be, today.
Yes there is a 5,3 point harness with two ,3 strings for under your arms aroung your chest to streap on your sternum so that those wall-hitting breaks don't make you break against a standard 3 point belt.
Great video as usual! You should do a review on the gt500 with a track pack so we can see how quick it is compared to the other cars you have done lap times on!
The awful exterior and overall lack of "specialness" really puzzle me. I can't see anyone preferring this over a 911 Carrera S let alone C8 Z06. A Mustang Mach 1 also is not only visually more appealing and a great track tool as well, it also has the beautiful V8 noise to accompany the drive. Did I mention that the 718 GT4 resides in that price range too? A track focused, mid engine, naturally aspirated Porsche????
well its faster than a carrera s , and a mach 1 or gt500 around the ring, and i dont think anyone looking for a european sportscar would would ever consider z06 even though its pretty good.The gt4rs is best value for money , its faster than alot of more expensive cars but then again comparing cars based on their prices is stupid
@@7h3th1 And? It's faster than these cars driven by a professional driver. Most people that buy such cars are far away from being professional drivers. The Carrera S is much more prestigious, people will ask what you drive and when you say a 911 they're like "Oh, very nice car. How much did it cost? 120K? Decent price". When you tell them you bought this they'll say "A BMW? For 140K? Is it the M8? No? M4? For that money!? At least it has to look goo...oh my God..." The Mach 1 is much more special, especially here in Europe. It looks gorgeous, has the nice V8 and handles like you wouldn't expect. The 718 GT4 openly competes with the M4 CS as a track car of similar price range of a german manufacturer. So it absolutely makes sense to compare them. And in that comparison the brand new M4 CS can't compete with the GT4 RS which is a bit older too. As for the Z06, people will look at the Corvette being much more desirable than any BMW, especially here in Europe where Corvettes are legendary and rare cars anyway. Not to mention with such an engine

I have Black CSL on order and am Still waiting for mine to be built. I already have a 22 M3 Comp X drive so i can live with that on the daily. The CSL will be for Cota, Live 10 mins away from it. I agree though the price is hard to swallow especially when like you said in the review that you don't get a Cage. I'm still excited to drive it when it comes in though regardless!

I don’t think people are appreciating that lap time. This is a front engined, RWD car that is quite heavy despite the weight savings. It is keeping up with and beating some insane sports cars that are built as sports cars from the ground up… to be so close to a race car like the GT3 is absolutely incredible.
Looking forward to the M3 version, just a better looking car overall... It's all in the rear quarters for me, the M4 is a BBL where the M3 just got it from her mama. IYKYK

@@DefinitelyNotEmma CSL is certainly much rarer than a GT4 so it's more special in the sense that if those 2 cars turn up together at any event, the CSL will be the one getting all the attention. If the event is in the car park of a race track, that's about as close as most CSLs will ever get to one of those too! There have also been quite a lot of Porsches that fit your description - I drive a mid-engined, naturally aspirated 6-cylinder boxer Porsche too. I regularly park my 981CS next to a 718 GT4 at the local supermarket and honestly they get about the same amount of attention. The GT4 gets more from people like me who know it's worth double mine, but to most people it just looks like a Cayman with a wing. I'd buy a GT4 over a CSL every day of the week though- and for the price people are selling the CSL, you could almost literally do exactly that 😂

The CSL wouldn't get any attention anywhere except the most hardcore car communities because it's just a 4 Series with stickers to most people. While the 718 GT4 has side vents, a wing, a Porsche badge and a front air outlet. People would ask if that's a 911 or GT3, because for whatever reason people think GT3 is a model and that Porsche only makes the 911 and Cayenne lol.
So I could spend 140 grand to get a 3650lb pig that has a stripped interior and carbon fiber seats that have little to no padding in order to go slower than a $65,000 C8 Corvette that has heated and cooled seats and a 14 speaker thousand watt surround system while somehow still being lighter than the CSL.
The problem I see here with this csl brand is the same what amg did with the black series brand, bmw and Mercedes try so hard to cope with Porsche and overdo it somehow. Any gt 3rs might be the better racetrack choice than this M4 csl and gt r black series

The CSL is SOOOOOO much better looking too. That front end is growing on me, but then I saw this and (aside from the 'meh' trim coloring), this is so much better.
I agree that this car looks stunning. That shot at 23:18 makes it look amazing. I wasn't a fan of the new grills but they are growing on me and I think the newer designs are growing into the bigger grill
nah but fr the front end has grown so much on me, I literally cannot look at older m3/m4 models anymore, g82 is the only way to go for me. this car was literally made to be wrapped matte black, especially with the yellow headlights on the CSL
To be fair, if you're inside the M4 then you also don't have to look at the front end 😄 For that money, I'd buy a specced up Panamera to go alongside my 981CS! If we're talking fun cars only though...well, I'd have a Pug 306 GTi-6, an Elise S1, a 981CS and an ND MX-5. Converting from UK prices into USD, that's about $100k, so let's chuck a Mustang (GT, manual) in there as well. At least 2 of those (306 and Elise) can out-fun any M4 by themselves so I'll take the 5 car garage all day...if I had a 5 car garage, or $140k, which I don't. Honestly not sure I'd swap the 981CS by itself for a CSL either though, unless I could sell the CSL, buy the 981 back and keep the change 😁

My boss was designated a CLS by BMW but turned it down for the following reason; Design and lack of attention to details, Torque Converter and... those rear brake caliper for all the money. He got himself a GT3 instead.

get an MPPSK kit, intake, and downpipe. The B58 sounds better than the S58 because the S58 has two turbos instead of just one like the B58.
@@dempseydulaney1 or the f82 with MPE or and M4 GTS (which essentially has an MPE) probably beats the CSL by miles due to modern regulations.

I have to say that the front looks better with the sportier appearance. It just looks more apropriate on the car this way. This is definitely my favourite of the M3/M4 family.

When you said the M5, I would always probably go for a 5 series lower power trim than you would. But man I've been in love with the 5 series for decades.. Good call!

Except you can't possibly get one for $140k. There was one on the floor when I picked up my 340 this past weekend, and they wanted $50k over list. The sales guys were laughing about people calling and offering $20-25k over list.

Thomas, I absolutely have to say this, you have my highest respect for always being so passionate AND remaining impartial. This car must have been eyes watering for someone who truly loves BMW: the M4 CSL seems to be exactly what a real M car should be, today.
Ugly, slow, overpriced, soulless?
Yes there is a 5,3 point harness with two ,3 strings for under your arms aroung your chest to streap on your sternum so that those wall-hitting breaks don't make you break against a standard 3 point belt.
I still can't get over how the front grill looks but the rest of the car looks good

The awful exterior and overall lack of "specialness" really puzzle me. I can't see anyone preferring this over a 911 Carrera S let alone C8 Z06. A Mustang Mach 1 also is not only visually more appealing and a great track tool as well, it also has the beautiful V8 noise to accompany the drive. Did I mention that the 718 GT4 resides in that price range too? A track focused, mid engine, naturally aspirated Porsche????
well its faster than a carrera s , and a mach 1 or gt500 around the ring, and i dont think anyone looking for a european sportscar would would ever consider z06 even though its pretty good.The gt4rs is best value for money , its faster than alot of more expensive cars but then again comparing cars based on their prices is stupid

The Carrera S is much more prestigious, people will ask what you drive and when you say a 911 they're like "Oh, very nice car. How much did it cost? 120K? Decent price".
When you tell them you bought this they'll say "A BMW? For 140K? Is it the M8? No? M4? For that money!? At least it has to look goo...oh my God..."
The Mach 1 is much more special, especially here in Europe. It looks gorgeous, has the nice V8 and handles like you wouldn't expect. The 718 GT4 openly competes with the M4 CS as a track car of similar price range of a german manufacturer. So it absolutely makes sense to compare them. And in that comparison the brand new M4 CS can't compete with the GT4 RS which is a bit older too. As for the Z06, people will look at the Corvette being much more desirable than any BMW, especially here in Europe where Corvettes are legendary and rare cars anyway. Not to mention with such an engine

A 2003 M3 CSL was £60k new. In 2022 US dollars, that’s $160k.

I have Black CSL on order and am Still waiting for mine to be built. I already have a 22 M3 Comp X drive so i can live with that on the daily. The CSL will be for Cota, Live 10 mins away from it. I agree though the price is hard to swallow especially when like you said in the review that you don't get a Cage. I'm still excited to drive it when it comes in though regardless!

I don’t think people are appreciating that lap time. This is a front engined, RWD car that is quite heavy despite the weight savings. It is keeping up with and beating some insane sports cars that are built as sports cars from the ground up… to be so close to a race car like the GT3 is absolutely incredible.

@@DefinitelyNotEmma CSL is certainly much rarer than a GT4 so it's more special in the sense that if those 2 cars turn up together at any event, the CSL will be the one getting all the attention. If the event is in the car park of a race track, that's about as close as most CSLs will ever get to one of those too!
There have also been quite a lot of Porsches that fit your description - I drive a mid-engined, naturally aspirated 6-cylinder boxer Porsche too. I regularly park my 981CS next to a 718 GT4 at the local supermarket and honestly they get about the same amount of attention. The GT4 gets more from people like me who know it's worth double mine, but to most people it just looks like a Cayman with a wing. I'd buy a GT4 over a CSL every day of the week though- and for the price people are selling the CSL, you could almost literally do exactly that 😂

The CSL wouldn't get any attention anywhere except the most hardcore car communities because it's just a 4 Series with stickers to most people. While the 718 GT4 has side vents, a wing, a Porsche badge and a front air outlet. People would ask if that's a 911 or GT3, because for whatever reason people think GT3 is a model and that Porsche only makes the 911 and Cayenne lol.
I didnt like the looks as well but it grew on me
So I could spend 140 grand to get a 3650lb pig that has a stripped interior and carbon fiber seats that have little to no padding in order to go slower than a $65,000 C8 Corvette that has heated and cooled seats and a 14 speaker thousand watt surround system while somehow still being lighter than the CSL.
The problem I see here with this csl brand is the same what amg did with the black series brand, bmw and Mercedes try so hard to cope with Porsche and overdo it somehow. Any gt 3rs might be the better racetrack choice than this M4 csl and gt r black series

The CSL is SOOOOOO much better looking too. That front end is growing on me, but then I saw this and (aside from the 'meh' trim coloring), this is so much better.
I agree that this car looks stunning. That shot at 23:18 makes it look amazing. I wasn't a fan of the new grills but they are growing on me and I think the newer designs are growing into the bigger grill
nah but fr the front end has grown so much on me, I literally cannot look at older m3/m4 models anymore, g82 is the only way to go for me. this car was literally made to be wrapped matte black, especially with the yellow headlights on the CSL
I would quickly take that $140,000 and buy a individual spec BrG on Cognac f90 LCi and be way happier not having to look at that front end

For that money, I'd buy a specced up Panamera to go alongside my 981CS! If we're talking fun cars only though...well, I'd have a Pug 306 GTi-6, an Elise S1, a 981CS and an ND MX-5. Converting from UK prices into USD, that's about $100k, so let's chuck a Mustang (GT, manual) in there as well. At least 2 of those (306 and Elise) can out-fun any M4 by themselves so I'll take the 5 car garage all day...if I had a 5 car garage, or $140k, which I don't.
Honestly not sure I'd swap the 981CS by itself for a CSL either though, unless I could sell the CSL, buy the 981 back and keep the change 😁

My boss was designated a CLS by BMW but turned it down for the following reason; Design and lack of attention to details, Torque Converter and... those rear brake caliper for all the money. He got himself a GT3 instead.
