I quite like the museum style base, those are bat wings, not a bat. And I had no problem with the bags around the foam boxes, it's not Weta's fault that you couldn't figure it out.
I remember when they announced it and I really liked it, but it was outrageously overpriced, now they are trying to sell the whole batch at "discounted" price, which is still too high. I think somewhere around 800$ is fair. Packaging is easily more than 300$ alone, it is ridiculous.

Commenting on this video because I really needed to see Weta's Recent Work to help me decide if I should should buy their New Superman. When I first saw it, I loved it. I think Weta nailed the pose and atmosphere for Superman. But with a $900 price tag I'd at least wanted to see a prototype instead of a digital render, especially if you're attempting a movie portrait. However, I also didn't want to miss out on it either. It's been a long time since I've seen Weta's Work. I wanted to see a recent review on one of their pieces, and I also wanted a reviewer that has zero problems pointing flaws so this video really helped me with my choice. My biggest concern was if Weta is able to get the skin tone right (I thought the skin tones on earlier portraits were very monotone). Watching this, I can see they stepped up their game. I pulled the trigger on Superman after watching this. I have to agree with your review on Gollum. Paint and sculpt look great but damn the engineering on that should have been addressed (Hoping they watched your review because this Superman is being held up by only his cape!) Grats again on the 20K. You deserve it. I've been watching you for years. When I first saw your videos I was like "Man, he rips these works of art apart! Why does he even collect?" Now I appreciate your style the most. For collectibles this pricey and more and more reviewers being 'sponsored' ,your work is real man. Mad props and here's to another 20K.
Awesome review. I like your honesty. Instant subscribe! Awesome statue but definitely not worth $1800. I own Prime 1 Geralt of Rivia. It's 1/4 scale but base details kill that Weta Gollum statue. And It was only $700. But I still like how they did that water effect on Gollum base. It's well done.
I guess they wanted to go premium with everything. I dunno what other pieces look like in that series. But for 1800 you can get one of the epic P1 pieces...

Definitely not an $1800 statue. I do not have a lot of statues in possession yet and I have a handful on order but I do like to associate size with price. If I'm going over the $1500 mark it has to have some good size even though its the ultimate enemy of collecting as I'm finding out now. I agree w/ the paint / sculpt being amazing though . I think this having an ES of 589 it would be better suited to being an $800-$1000 statue with a smaller box for cheaper shipping. I enjoyed the prison shank comment lol

I recently just got this statue from Weta during there black Friday reverse auction and only ended up paying $580 shipped. I even got it cheaper being a frequent buyer of Weta as I only collect LOTR items and had Weta dollars. I agree with you on all points, my statue doesn't fit all the way to the base either and the base it also slightly warped and wobbles back and forth. It's worth what I paid, but I still think at $1000 it's way over priced and would be very hard to sell it at that price. I also own the MC Treebeard which is part of the crazy over packaged line and I don't like the heavy boxes and silk bags, overkill and money should have been spent elsewhere (QC) and lower price point. Sculpting and paint are top notch though!
@@TheXtremeChannelMrX The sculpt is extremely well done with detail galore. Merry and Pippen are some of the best likenesses as well. The paint apps are some of Weta's best to date with many layers to achieve the tree bark. Treebeard is not without his faults as he comes in close to 50 pcs including the individual branches some people have had fit issues causing large gaps. Mine was pretty good, but also has a warped base (constant Weta issue) He's huge and needs lots of space, but amazing presence and hard to keep your eyes off it.

One thing about weta is that all their statues are hand painted which is something I appreciate. Also the MC line comes with awesome prints signed by in the case of treebeard by Alan lee.
Smaegol was almost 600 years old, would hardly eat at all, and got no sunlight. The emaciated look makes way more sense. Even with a "high protein diet" you wouldn't expect him to be muscular.
Fine art is subjective and so is it's price. If you made a seven figure income this would be cheap, but if you akimbo on boxed sets bc it's too much, this isn't for you.

Thanks for the in-depth review. 1,000% agreement about the loin cloth - no reason for it not to be poly. The eyes are misaligned just enough to really bug me. But the right foot!!! The Battle Troll of Mordor has the same, much more pronounced, problem. Not sure if it's WETA's qc or the factory in China. Because of those 3 issues - I'll be looking for a different Gollum piece for my collection. Especially when you consider I can get 4 or 5 other pieces for that price.
I agree, the unnecessary box, only inflates shipping cost. You should weigh the box and statue separately so we'll know. I do not like what they did with the left arm. If anything, the left arm should have been forward, with an open hand with the ring on the palm. I don't like the addition of the bat either. The loincloth should have been done in a way that it droops naturally. They should have also added a few layers of clear resin over the eye to help hide the separation where they added the glass iris. As is, I would pay $800 for this, then fix it.
All Weta pieces are now this horribly overpriced (isn't everyone??). Pity as they can do great work when they want... their pieces are just never worth what Weta is asking. Getting the $3300 1/6 Treebeard? Cheers.
Good piece....but seriously not worth the price.... bought a weta figurine recently...Lord Elrond....but the paint job is no way near what is depicted in website.... better to go for Iron Studios !!! Even for 1/10 th scale...the guys at Iron Studios nail it !!!

Fantastic video, like an episode of Big John Little John channelling a Gem style unboxing, funny, informative and somewhat chaotic! The piece looks pretty cool but the price point is way off, $500 - $600 at the very most, including shipping! The packaging is very nice but ridiculously over the top! Interestingly, Gollum looks exactly like the abusive clown SF5ftw 8-)

it looks like what happened was, they got the statue design and features all set and the first piece made then said... "Crap" ..we killed the water effect, we nailed gollum, but.. we're only at like 1200$, how do we get to 1800$ we said this was going to be?. then the meetings happened and they came up with.. " lets over do the packaging and throw in a paintbrush" .. "Ok, Now.. we have 1800$ worth".

Why are this companies are still insisting in using those ugly circular underbase. I have a few statues that I wish I could cut them out. The worst one I have is Dark Phoenix PF with the ugly Silver base. Great review but it's extremely overpriced.
I would never buy it and certainly not at that price. BIG miss for me. Maybe the ring is actual pure gold and that's why it's priced out of the stratosphere.
I’m a huge fan of The lord of the Rings but I don’t like his face and I think his skin is too clean be be living in a cabe . Definitely I wouldn’t pay no more than $150 for this sculpture

His dimension is 40.35" high and not 12" that is a difference and edition size is 333.You will never see a Treebeard statue in 1/6 again.
