What a bizarre reaction to Hard Nuts. I think it's one of the best episodes. Certainly well regarded with people I know.
The thing with Hard Nuts is that the storylines aren’t necessarily the best of the bunch BUT the patter is amongst the best of all the Still Game episodes.
Agree with both. It’s a tv program. It’s meant to lift you from the norm. Not every story has to be 100% believable.
@@georgeclark9061 I don't even find it unbelievable as compared to other episodes. It's just some wee TV show that asks to film their pub, and then they all pretend they're hard in really pathetic ways that ring true with certain Scottish norms. Plus the producer realises that it's just an old man pub.
No it was shite (Scottish/British so shite not shit), the show went downhill esp. after the real life breakup/makeup.
Yeah one of my favourites too. He kept on pausing it at the funniest scenes. Weird. His sense of humours usually top notch
theyre intentionally being cringe, and unbelievable. theyre not intentionally trying to come across as serious, how youre taking it is exactly as intended. theyre ridiculously cringe and over the top for the reason that their characters arent normally like that, so them over acting as thugs comes across as unnatural
I still maintain that this is one of the best comedies ever written.
You need a pair of these Timpsons £19.99
That is the BBC for you
I agree sir!
@@krisyflynt9211 sure the words used was ONE of the best.
@@dave_h_8742that boy outta timpsons is getting kicked squarely in the nuts.
I really don't think the 'Hard Nuts' episode deserved such a strong negative reaction. Still Game has always been a bit offbeat and silly, that episode was really not that diffrent from the rest. I don't really understand where he's coming from on this one...
in order to enjoy hard nuts as an episode, you can't be on the outside looking in, you have to actually live in Scotland to understand where it came from
Rubbish!
The sarcastic comedy where they were taking the pish went right over your head but still I like the genuine reaction 😊
Episode 4 is definitely of it’s time.
It was at the time when BBC 3 started doing those “Britains Hardest People” type documentaries, so it made more sense why they did the episode at the time.
Exactly! I couldn’t put my finger on it, but you’re right
And Sky TV had "Britain's Hardest Boozer's with ol' idiots chomping on electric light bulbs, etc. 🤭
Loved the episode. The pausing and whining every minute. Not so much. Probably just an off day , yes not the best but really didn't believe it was so bad to pause every 30sec to tell us
Well said let's hope Alan is in a reflective mood soon he must make a nice living doing what he does,it must have been a bad day for him.
So true he was laughing at it then pausing then moaning shout it that show was 10 mins in and he was talking it down you could see he was not interested he keeps saying that's his favourite comedy yet he leaves it for weeks then says he's was busy the guys were acting and he's moaning that there bad acting he's a bearded dick
Yeah. The huge eye rolls he was doing was confusing... @@andywrong3247
Exactly
Totally Agree EB , having - mid life crisis ? 🙄
Actually more people than you'd think have swords in Glasgow. The episode is in reference to Glasgow's gang culture and the TV shows of time glorifying that sort of thing.
I remember back from the mid 80’s to early 90’s shell suits were so popular because apparently (for those so inclined) they were good for carrying a sword around tucked inside the waistband.
I know that there were certainly sword attacks in the town next to the one I grew up in and that’s the best part of an hour from Glasgow by train.
That was black long leather jackets or crombies to hold a shot gun or Samurai sword
Stab city
Mate that first episode is famous, I feel like you didn't have a good day or whatever and it clouded your judgement or something mate, it's not meant to be serious and is meant to be silly haha
I agree with you Alan is usually a breath of fresh air but as you say Alan must have had a bad day I'm glad most comments are in favour of hardnuts episode but some are sucking up to Allan.i personally thought concern for Allan @one stage I thought he was going to flip even Alan getting exasperated with older technologies from years ago vhs,yes Alan we progress get over it.
@andywrong3247 I agree but hey ho we all have our bad days
💯 his attitude was way off.
I look forward to your reactions to these every week. I’m totally enjoying rewatching Still Game (one of my favourite shows of all time) along with you. Shocked at your thoughts on Hard Nuts! Can’t believe you said it was like watching two different shows haha! You know them putting on the act is the joke right? The Clansman is one of the tamest pubs in UK TV history. Anyways respect your opinion and looking forward to the next one. Keep up the great work mate!
Nothing like Still Game to cheer us all up.
You are correct, after the week I've had this was the weekend tonic I needed.
Not after that reaction its was an embarrassment let's see if he would do that to a David Mitchell show the worst comedian in Britain
Glasgow gangsters and swords was totally a thing in the 60s 😂
Hard nuts is a pisstake episode of its time on what was a real TV show called "Britain's toughest pubs" It is intentionally being cringe & stupid. But to enjoy such an episode, being a yank is a massive issue, as it quite clearly goes over their heads & even after 5 seasons, they still don't quite get it.
Hard Nuts never did it for me. The side stories in both are better than the main ones ie Navid's crisis and Winston leaving. 😎
Yer there's a reaction you have where you say I didn't think that one lived up to the rest or a reaction slagging off and only 10 min in and he was hands on his head looking at how long the video was left and it he was being a prick
I cant believe you didnt like hard nuts that is my favorite episode its so funny was shocked you wasnt into it ha still love you bro
It was meant to be like that all put on!! To get on TV, actors badly acting verry badly and failing miserably!! Nevermind!! The next one is fantastic Leci Beard!!😊
Exactly
If you look closely at the TV listings there is Chewin' the Fat, another Ford and Greg creation that pre-dated Still Game. 3:20 on the vid.
No idea why you disliked that episode. It's supposed to be fake and awkward. You seemed to laugh as usual. Still Game was often a bit "off", what made it what it was.
Alan said it wasn't like real life, but burning a supermarket down, punching a horse in the head, throwing a washing machine throw a tiny window into a skip 70yards away was reallife come on alan wake up & smell the coffee.
@@andywrong3247exactly its no designed to be like real life its a comedy
@GlasgowRossco cheers Glasgow rossco,I've dropped a few comments in this section I've had a little grief off a few but I was very surprised with Alan's reaction it caught me off Guard @ one stage I thought he was going to stop mid stream.theres the odd few agreeing with Alan but I think overall people know what class is,we all have our favourite episodes but there's the odd one maybe not top notch but not enough to throw dummy out of the cot, I'm Andy from England I like still game I'll take the rough with the smooth. I wouldn't mind bipolar alan was belly laughing one minute then cursing oh dear lord.did you ever see Alan's things to learn about Christmas 3 weeks back it was cringe as if it was aimed @ 3year olds.alan got recommended a duff one there.
@@andywrong3247 aye mate i stopped watching the reaction at the part where jack and victor pulled the swords out. I couldn’t handle the moaning anymore. I think hardnuts is a great episode too.
@@GlasgowRossco I stuck it out till the end,I liked the bit when Winston crapped his pants when he saw the camera was on him,I've noticed Alan hasn't responded to many comments I think he realised he may have overstepped his mark.
This is still grounded in reality they are parodying a phenomenon of British telly the reality program (Which is what Ricky Gervais's The Office was originally and which the American version missed the point !) This is the reason they was going through the telly guide at the beginning and talking about the demise of the actor ! At the time of the making of this there was shows along the lines of Britains hardest pub and although most reality based drama type programs have not yet caught on in the U.S.A Gordon Ramsey seems to be doing very well over there ! As you say "JUST SAYING !"
Might want to google Ken Dodd for context Lol. Episodes 5 and 6 are a two part story hence the slower burn haha.
So glad someone's finally called out the later stuff... it only goes downhill from here, especially the last couple of seasons. The believability was what made it before now. There are still some good bits, worth sitting through, but you've idenitified the problem very early on.
Apparently during the scene when the dog was jumping, there was actually someone just below the camera throwing the dog up😂
NEVER!!! There's me thinking it had its own trampoline ffs....😮
This reaction seemed off. Was like watching a different person react. The first episode seemed to go way over his head.
Brilliant !!! I was starting to panic ! Being Scottish I've seen all these from day one - several times over, but your reaction to it makes my day - keep it up please !
You didn't get it, from the very start of the episode it was a piss take of the overly popular reality TV which has sadly taken over
think this one went over your head
Can't wait for one flew over over cook çoos nest themed episode.
Alan please please don’t let 1 bad episode put you off mate you’ve watched over 30 episodes with us (1000s of subscribers) & im sure everyone has a bad/not good/boring episode it’s like that with every other comedy you have a good episode coming up when Winston is in finport & Xmas Christmas special witch is definitely funny next week when you watch the next 2 episodes episode 6 & Xmas special called cold turkey
It’s not even a bad episode though. He just didn’t get it that’s all
This really highlights the differences between Uk and American comedy does he understand that the comedy comes from the characters making asses of themselves trying to get on TV and it backfiring whereas I feel in American comedy the comedy happens around the main character and it’s about how they react to it
The last 3 season of still game are good, the gap didn’t help mate, but the final seasons are still better than most tv and a guess your love for the characters, the final ever episode though is fucking beautiful and touching just how it should be. The few Christmas new year episodes are great also especially hootenanny” 😂 great reaction as always!
I really liked the second to last. Stands out for me. Beautiful in every way.
Nah the last three seasons have some downright awful episodes in there.
The bike gang at the end of ep4 was the Blue Angels. The oldest outlaw biker club in Europe. Like Hells Angels they have their heroes and villains but mostly a decent bunch.
Hardnuts is parodying shows that actually existed back in the day
" hardest pub" Shows where a real thing 😂😂. But hey, you're allowed not to like an episode .
There was a show in the UK about hard pubs and around this time there were shows about “Britain’s hardest” people, football hooligans, criminals etc
Hard Nuts isn't my favourite either, but then the 4 episodes that precede it, from Who's The Daddy to Smoke on the Water, take some beating.
We'll soon be in season 6, but there are still the pre season 7 Holiday Specials to watch.
Not a 2 year hiatus between series 6 and 7, it was 9 years.
my name is Tom Mullen same as Tam Mullen in still game, love the show rewatched in numerous times, ps love your show, all the way from Belfast UK
This was a legitimate thing at one point that’s what made it so good when this came out
The small silver device on top of the V.C recorder is a cable channel box, adding 50 odd channels to view.
The way Jack and Victor talk when they walk into The Clansman whilst pretending to be hard men, isn’t actually too far off how those who thought they were hard spoke in Glasgow and its surrounding areas when I was young in the 80’s and 90’s…and they always had a swagger to them.
And Scots making out their hard to the English, isn’t too much of a stretch either because many from England just presume that the Scots are a bit rough and ready. I know that when I was out with a group of lassies about the same age as me in London (and they were from London), on heading for The Tube around midnight, told me to do all the talking if anyone tried to hassle us because “Everyone’s scared of a Scottish accent”.
The Finport scenes in the next episode are mostly filmed in Largs and I think Saltcoats. Largs is just along the coast from where I grew up and you’d be surprised at how cheap some of the flats are in the centre of the town…especially considering how popular a day trip location it is. I also can’t help but wonder if the name came from Millport, which is where you can get a ferry to from Largs…which is/was also a popular day trip destination.
The Scramble or as it was called where I grew up Scrammie, always happened at weddings when I was a kid both outside the Bride and Groom’s homes as they were leaving for the ceremony and as they were leaving the ceremony to have their photos done just before the reception. It was always a good handful of loose coins that were thrown out for the neighbouring kids and back in the 80’s when I was amongst those kids, it’d be enough to get some sweets. I’m not sure if this happened outside of Scotland or even if it happened everywhere in Scotland.
at the end of sense and sensability the grooms throw money when they're in the carriage after the wedding for the local kids.
I'm Scottish and love still game but I avoid hard nuts because it's utter garbage
Hard nuts isn’t the best but you’d enjoy both episodes more if you got the alot of the references/jokes that went over your head.
That bit with Winston puting on the hard man act.
My dad just talks like that when thing's are serious, & he just is, he just lives that.
The bastard'll be 70 in 7 months, he thought he'd be deed by 60 at the most, but he still has that same spirit.
And it's served him well in the last 20 years, some of the pricks he's encountered on his way home a few times, once got set aboot by 7 very young idiots couldn't've been more than 25.
He gave them a speech very similar to that, as he described it, & then followed through on it.
Fortunately there were witnesses to coroborate the story, gave them all a decking, he was about 62 at the time, it's really not that long ago.
All 7 of the pricks, only gave him a few bruises on his arms ribs & face, absoultely bugger all when you think what 7 vs 1 should look like
Aye, he talks like that, because he lives it, he, Means it, it's just the world he grew up in in Glasgow in the 50's & 60's
How the hell can anyone paus this much for that amount of time & possibly be able to enjoy the show, wtaf that's mental man, so much of this show is in the pacing of things, which, is just completely lost like that
The small device onto of the V.C recorder is a cable channel box.
I'm with you, I always skip that episode when I'm watching through
Eclectic beard: what villain you talking about?
Me: well I see Venom
Still Game Is The Best Scottish Sitcom That Is Why We Love It So Much In Scotland It Is So Fantastic And To Think That Jack And Victor Started As A Skit
hardly any competition lol
I work where they recorded the next episode in finport .. it’s called Saltcoats in north Ayrshire.. it’s not to bad & ain’t that expensive to live right next to the sea etc .. we are on the coast in 3 towns so it’s not to bad buddy 😅
Love your reactions to this show but your dead wrong it’s ment to be like this it’s stemming from the beginning of the episode where there watching weird tv
Episode 4 was still better than all of The Inbetweeners, Friday Night Dinner, Dr Who and many more.. ✌🇮🇪
Nah man you can’t diss those shows like that - they’re good.
My Mum use to have scarf 'just like the one Victor's got at the start of the episode....only 'Still Game'
Did you see the error cut when Winston enters the pup twice when Victor is asking tam for money for the kitty
Stop it Alan you're making me laugh lol😂😂
You think this storyline is bad? Wait until you watch the newest ones 😂💩
What you on about you clown? When I reacted to the last 3 series the buzz amongst my subs/followers was some of the most active I’ve ever had. They were brilliant. 😑
Bobby's lip' going like a cats when it sees a bird!
For the second episode “All the Best”, you really need to have been familiar with one of Britain’s national treasures… comedian Ken Dodd. As it is, you’ve missed a lot of the ‘in-jokes’. Nevertheless, Ken Dodd (‘Doddy’) is still well worth checking out.
agree mate , wisny my fav , made me cringe a bit
Normally I enjoy your commentary, but the problem here is somewhat cultural.
Firstly, your reference to swords. It is a fact that swords have been use in gang violence in Scotland. It's not too common but the reference to swords was relevant at the time the episode was made.
Secondly, you seem to assume that all the gangland references are all base on American gangsters, certainly that is true to a great extent in Jack and Victor's playing up to the camera, but the UK and indeed Scotland have had their fair share of hoodlums too. There is a nod and a wink to Glasgow gang culture here every bit as much to the play acting pretence of Hollywood gangsters.
Thirdly, you seem to have missed an obvious point. Navid is not the only one having a midlife crisis, they all are. That's the whole point.
Anyone who thinks this is a poor episode is welcome to their opinion.
Perhaps, it's the case that the clever cross cultural references, deliberate ham acting baloney etc. do not translate too well, but I have to confess I really like this episode.
All that said, it may not be one of the the best, I don't think they quite pulled it off, but certainly not nearly as bad as suggested.
Edit: I should say, since this is, I think, the first time that I have left a comment on your channel, that I am genuinely impressed by how well you have picked up on the humour of Still Game and Scottish cultural in general.
It’s been great fun watching this with you. I have it all on DVD but it’s great fun watching someone seeing it for the same time through different eyes a quarter to a third of the way around the planet.
Slàinte
Second Edit: A sea town in Scotland isn’t necessarily as glamorous, warm, and hence as expensive as the California coast or the Florida Keys.
Hence, Winston’s relocation to Finport, a fictional west coast location of Scotland, is not quite as unbelievable as all that. Not that believability is the chief concern of Still Game.
Scotland does have beautiful beaches and some of the clearest pollution free waters in the Northern Hemisphere. But … they are rather cold!!
Spot on mate
@@scottirvine121 Thanks for the affirmation. It is most appreciated. Wasn’t quite sure if I was simply going mad reading some of the comments.
Not sure if I should put my oar in re his dissection of Frankie Boyles Guardian article of a few years back and his somewhat naive interpretation of Carl Jenjamin’s politics but I would need a sturdy breakfast before tackling that subject.
Doubtless I’d be at risk of being declared woke by some of the YT commentariat, but actually I have a lot of respect for Beardy who seems a thoroughly decent guy who refuses to overly judge. I like that a lot, even if I disagree with a few of his interpretations.
It’s a good channel and open minded. And a good way to watch old episodes of this and that again while listening to a nice beardy American with a heart warming laugh.

I agree with the Hard Nuts episode...Something about it is just off...I usually skip it if I'm watching still game again
49:17
I swear the guy says 'Paul' before correcting himself saying Mr Ingram. 😂
Paul Riley is the actor that plays Winston
In total agreement. This season is where the ‘social realism’ started to falter, then fade completely into tryhardy absurdism in the following seasons. The latter seasons are painful - it’s like watching a once charming and sharp relative slowly develop Alzheimer’s.
Cheers EB been Lookin forward to more Still Game from your good self😊
All the best🙏
The thing with the McGill thing in the pub, there were a gang in Glasgow a few year ago , I know I'm a McGill that's why I know
Every episode is pure dead brilliant so I have to disagree with you on E4 but we are all entitled to our opinions..
You left it too long between episodes but glad to see you back watching still game..
Easily amused if you think they're all brilliant
Ive watched still game over an over and i do agree the "hard nuts" episode i find very cringe too. And im scottish 😂
Sup man, hope you and the family had a good Xmas and New Year, all the best for 2024! 💙💙💙
The teeth of ken dodd is excellent, google ken dodd then you get the joke 😂😂
I used to have 7 swords I got rid of 3 I still got a lot of knifes like Kukri, survival, throwing knifes I know a few people who have collections they are still very popular I know few people with gun collections as well, but that list is smaller I have family members who have gun licences even my neighbour has a gun & a sword they are far more popular than you think in Scotland
Gangsters in glasgow have been known to fight with swords on a few occasions😂
First episode was wrote like that ,the new last 3 seasons I really enjoy
Calm the fcuk down! Of course it's put on, they wouldn't know how to act tough, if you paid them. They are acting like the tough guys they've seen on their TV's. That's why it's so over the top. :o)
Alan, your abit judgemental today with hardnuts episode i liked it dont take it to literally have you woken up this morning &seen your own arse.you must have had a bad day.
your'e taking it far too seriously it',s a comedy for gods sake, its not a drama my son loved this episode chill man
They are taking the piss out of all the fake reality shows that took off at the time, and regarding swords in a pub, that was something that happened in rough pubs in Glasgow back in the day.
alan these last two episodes shall we say two little bumps in the road.lol
Victor could pass as a nasty piece of work, and Jack would be able to get away with it, because he's mate.
Jack played the big man in chewin the fat though. He is the one that made a helmet for his wee boys action man from the guv'ner of barlinnie's plumbs.
Nobody messed with the big man.
"Who has a sword" Eh.. me! Got one sitting on ma tv stand. This is Scotland Alan.. we dont do guns here boss. This ep is still before the hiatus. Hiatus takes place after the 'hospital' episode. There is 2 eps of still game I actually hate in later seasons involving a swap with boaby & navid & a love triangle with wee fergie. Those 2 were utter dross
Batter the shite oot of it. I laughed for about a week at that line.
Hope you and family had a good new year 🏴
Yay we're back❤
its to highlight how fake reality tv shows are and how badly the people in them play to the camera
I'm surprised you didn't acknowledge the ken Dodd joke, as you've watched a couple of his videos.
Still Game maybe the Greatest sitcom since Cheers Glaswegian style!
You may like rab c nesbitt aswell, its a Scottish comedy where they drink all the time and live on benefits, you may find the Scottish accent a bit hard in it compared to still game
The best of the best stuff sg
Bro,I know a guy from Glasgow that drives about with a sword,no shit 🤣🤣🤣
Would love to see you react to Rab C Nesbitt
Who has swords? The Household Cavalry have swords. I wouldn't argue with them. Anyway, it's not a bad episode, and the final scene is worth it.
Hard Nuts, needs a bit of perspective, this was broadcast when "big brother" mania (reality shows) where the big thing, they where basically taking the p!ss, that's why Jack says that at the end. Hope this makes sense, coz I wouldn't want you missing out on the best to come ✌️
Your reaction to blighties hardest boozers help me realize it was a turning point, when I saw it was that episode, I didn't get the usual buzz when I see beardy upload a still game video, I didn't know I hated that episode, you have an eye for shows that I don't, unfortunately this is the beginning of the downward spiral of still game that I and probably a few others warned you about, it only gets lesser than the first 4 seasons and three episodes, the good news is the live shows that you can find on UA-cam are good, if you are a still game fan like your good self, something I've been watching on netflix is called "detectorists", I don't think it would be great reaction content but I think it will be something you'd enjoy, you seem to enjoy realistic stories with dry humour, detectorists is decent.
Ive seen you watch ken Dodd you should have got that joke..
Glad to see a comedy reaction that doesn't agree with it.
Alan- I think for someone from Scotland-or outside, that expects a SG episode to be one continuous decent storyline, it's fair that this episode is a bit off-cue... it doesn't particularly go anywhere and lead to a decent conclusion... I can totally understand your enthusiasm for the episode to go down the Navid storyline, but it wasn't the case lol. Being from Glasgow though, I can guarantee that there are plenty of people who own swords around here haha. Best wishes :)
Gotta say though, the sarcasm of this episode when Boaby and the publicans are kidding on might have been totally missed lol
Good to see being rightly critical of a weak episode. It's been a few years since I've seen them, but I do recall the quality became more erratic for a couple of seasons (although the charm of the characters keeps it very watchable), but then it recovers. It really is worth staying with the series until its very final moment.
Love still game. If you like Scottish comedy two doors down is good Scottish comedy as well
You think vodka and red bull gives you a caffeine hit try and get yourself a bottle of buckfast
Been following all your still game journey bud but I think this one went totally over your head
Navid mid life crisis is fking great
I'd recommend you look up Ken Dodd and then the jokes will make sense about the wife
yay here he is :-)))))))
I think they took the show to far, the reasons fawlty towers had only 13, episodes was because they didn't want it to turn into mush, I think some American shows hung around to long as well.
