One thing to mention is Wood Elves are not a gunline army, they're in fact the exact opposite, they're a gun-net. Your opponent is playing a Rank-and-flank game and you're playing 40k.
I was a wood elf player from 6th all the way to warhammer armies project, and I have to say I'm actually really excited about what they have done with the army list. My spooky forest Boys are looking fun
There's a guy I play HH with that was asking about how to get into the game and what wood elves were like. Sent him a bunch of vids like man reads book and old eefl posts. Then this vid dropped and he said it was the most helpful thing he's found about them. Keep making great stuff dude
8:24 skipped the bad part of arrow of Kurnous, the enemy get +1 when rolling to get the first turn. Getting the first turn is very good for WE as they can then shoot first and hopefully taking out most part of the enemies archers
I'm scrubbing 15 year-old paint off of Glade Guard and rebasing to 25mm. It's just wonderful, the sculpts look nicer on a larger square. The arrow options are gonna be fun, and I hope we don't have to wait too long for our refresh. And seeing good reviews like this makes it that much more exciting.
This is like the tenth time I’ve watched this vid. I love these info rich enthusiastic videos. Good to reference when building or thinking about your army. 10/10😄
I like that you put up text between shots of you talking. Too many are just talking about the rules with either out of focus book shots or no text. I like being able to read it to help in remembering it. thank you Rob.
This isn't half assed "man read book content." There's a lot of enthusiasm in this. I just came from the Warriors of Chaos video and I'm definitely enjoying this format of videos. Please do all the armies! And thanks for the info and entertainment!
Great content guys. I’ve seen so many videos of other big channels (who likely got sent all these books well before release) mumble through the book in a non-structured format without really adding any thoughts or insights. Bravo
I've pulled out my woodelf army from the early 00's. I traded a beast man army but never assembled or painted it. Have been out the hobby for 18 years but keen to get my woodelves on the tabletop
Great content and useful analysis of str and weaknesses. I think the “arrow line” is totally fine for games where ppl know what is being bought but has big weaknesses, the biggest being “will my opponent enjoy playing me” it could be just as bad as playing boring gunlines & very likely be nurtured by TOs. As a long time WE player the previous edition influences still keep this faction one of the harder ones to master and imho should be approached as “multiple types of units” armies as trying to mitigate weaknesses is key to WE going well rather then leaning on shooting.
This is fantastic, Rob. Very quick and concise which is quite hard to do at times. This gave me something to chew on now so, I thank you sir. Super excited!
This was a great watch. Never played fantasy and tempted by Wood Elves for Old World. As ever your content is amazing Rob, look forward to more of these for the other factions.
Already liked the video but coming back after hearing your comments in the most recent podcast...this video is REALLY GOOD. It's by far the best Old World content out there at the moment, it was very clear and the graphics are top notch. Thank you #squarebassed team. Looking forward to the Bretonnia guide.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together Rob. I've been keeping one eye opening on the OW stuff as it came out and Wood Elves would be the one thing to pull me back in if I do and so to have this information so awesomely presented is a great resource for someone like me wanting to have a peak behind the curtain before dipping any toes into the water just yet. Keep up the great work! :)
oh man cant wait to get back in this.. i used to run 2 units of archers, 3 glade riders, wardancers and a wardancer lord.. it was sooo fun running circles on the table
Amazing. Super pumped for you and will be consuming every second of content you and Val produce. I know you must be frantically rushing these out so I've listed a few little things I noticed. 16:11 The visual for Glade Guard and Deepwood Scouts lists them as BS5 instead of BS4. You correctly say "BS4" though. 28:12 You mention the Waywatcher special arrows are cheaper than for glade guard but they are the same. Your visual correctly has them the same. 28:54 You say the Treeman has 6 attacks but it only has 5. Your visual has it correct. 29:50 Your visual for the great eagle has some rather interesting options listed that I'm sure aren't in the book! None of it takes away from the video though.
One of my favourite armies. Loving this Rob!! Loved the little theme taster at the start. Maybe show some possible Minis for each unit for players new to each army (could be a seperate video and include GW minis and non Gw minis/STLs. I’d watch all of those)
At the moment and without having more then Photos from the Book, i lean toward 3 Glade Guard Units. 2 of 10 Models with Arcane Bodkins and a 20 Men Unit with the Flamming Banner and Poison Arrows. Then 2x 6 Wild Riders with full Command, one with the Warbanner. Lvl 4 Mage and Army Standard Bearer plus a way stalker with 10 Way watchers. 7 War dancer as Carrier for Lvl4 and ASB, 3x 5 Dryads, 1 Eagle, 3 War Hawk Riders and a Treeman. Higly Mobile and nothing to really charge, except the 20 Elves Brick. I change Stuff from there
What they have done with wood elves is incredible; 4 different arrow types! This will also allow for some great but simple conversions; flaming arrows, arrows dripping with green poison!
Lord in eternal guard, tolled up with a hail of doom arrow slipped in there for either a shooting boost of a nasty stand and shoot was always a favourite of mine
@@SquareBasedOldWorld Yes all of your content is great for getting an idea of the rules, and the nuances of the of this new edition. Incredibly well put together, well done guys! New player to old/fanasty Warhammer so i was hoping to find a video that balanced rule breakdowns and character/unit descriptions and you did just that! Blown away and i cannot wait to follow your helpful insights for this game in the future 🙌
I’ve loved your commentary so far, but this rules review/dive is really quality stuff. Look forward to watching along to the rest of them. The Wood Elves feel like they have a good showing here. A tricky, finesse army that in the right hands are going to run rings round the plethora of Bret and TK armies out there. Feels like a good representation of the army with some of the best aspects of their 6th and 8th iterations.
except what i have seen so far wood elfs are getting wiped easily by brets and tk and probably by other armies. Wood elf shooting is made pretty bad and if you want it to be better its overcosted compared to other armies. Also most of the wood elf cc unit just get rekt byt other armies cc troops.
Fantastic series! I played in 6th when I was a 12, then moved into 40k and im excited to come back to rank and flank games but most content creators are acting like everyone watching played during 8th which is annoying. Keep up the amazing work!
Everyone else is saying the same thing, great overview, clean and clear. If you’re up for some ideas, maybe showcasing some third-party sculpts and STL’s for the army you’re talking about.
Thank you for making videos that arnt garbage. Everyone else is just bumbling through the book and not showing the stats, then I have to look a blurry screenshots to glean any info that they forgot. Keep the quality content coming!
Great video! Really like the mix of army overview and first impressions. I also feel like you hit somewhat of a sweet spot with how long to show the rules graphics. I couldn't read most of it in the time it was up, but it was up just long enough to skim and decide whether I wanted to pause the video to read or not. I like this kind of information-dense reference video that are perfect for rewatching (already am). As someone who haven't engaged with rectangular based games since the mid 90's (and who's visualization abilities are mostly non-existent), I was really hoping to see an example at the end of the video of how a WE army *could* look like. You were already kinda giving a loose outline of your ideas for a WE army throughout the video. It would have been very helpful for me to have that summed up as a text or graphic at the end. EDIT: It wouldn't even need to have exact points values. Just a somewhat rough outline of what an army *could* look like. Basically, more or less what you were describing verbally - but presented visually :) Maybe even just a 1250 pts example 'army list' rather than a full 2000 (1999?) pts army? As the only real points of comparison that currently exist are the TK and Bret boxes.
If a longbow has hagbane tips does armour-bane proc at the same time as the poison? Also wondering if it’s better to just have more arrow shots than less but more high quality arrows. By the time you’ve upgraded 2 glade guard units you could have probably bought a third.
The scuttlebutt is the 9 factions will be released in paired boxsets - with possibly Orcs and Goblins being split into two separate, respective releases. Each release will likely contain some new models, mirroring what the Brets and TKs got, likely cool centerpiece models, and possibly a redo of some old sculpts. WE got lots of new miniatures in the final editions of WHFB, and things like Sisters of the Thorn and Wild Riders don't look as "aged" as models from other ranges. But their characters need some love for sure.
For people who want to build warhawk riders, since models for that are somewhat hard to find: Tyranid gargoyles are somewhat decently convertible to giant bats and large enough to fit glade guard models on top, which can make nice standins for warhawk riders. alternatively, fell bats are the less work, but a lot more expensive option
My favourite faction ❤️. I had them many years ago, but not anymore. Old world will give me the chance to rectify this. Got the books & map on pre-order for now. Plan on building the treemen, dryads & treekin using some sylveneth my aos army also. Thanks, Rob, for the overview. You & val with all your hype has got me hyped once again, having started fantasy in the 4th edition.
Excellent video! Genuinely a useful resource that I can see people coming back to reference over time (if we do get a fairly stable forge world style meta like heresy/mesbg). Please keep this up to do full coverage of the factions! Cant wait for the empire, itll hype me to get them out of storage.
I’ve always liked the idea of a complete Forest Spirit army. As I’m reading the list and understand your walkthrough I would always need a unit of Glade Guards.
great video man! you guys are BY FAR the best channel covering this game. i really appreciate your enthusiasm and the effort you put in really shows. especially in comparison to some of the low effort crap coming from some channels XD.
Overall I'm extremely impressed with this army book, Wood Elves being my main and favorite army. I am a little disappointed to see Waywatchers seemingly nerfed down in status by such a large degree, but their points cost being reduced by an equally staggering amount means it will probably be okay in the end, maybe it will offer more options and make them less vulnerable to have a higher model count, maybe that cost gets eaten in having to include a waystalker. My complaints are very few in number -I loved str 4 dryads as it set them apart in the WE army as being a high value to cost unit in an army of very expensive models, probably deserving of the nerf to be fair, especially now that the only way to stop their ward save is with fire, and not the much more common magical attacks. They got tankier in exchange for slightly less killing power, this could end up being a big big big upgrade. -Move and shoot without a -1 penalty for all the bow users, I might be missing some special rules somewhere, but it looks like we take a -1 when moving and shooting. I will note that gladeguard to my memory were BS 4 and the screenshot is showing BS5, if that is the case I will gladly keep my mouth shut as that is a huge buff to accuracy if you choose to stand still. -Waywatchers don't seem to capture the element of super elite archers at only BS 5 and the removal of killing blow, I might be missing something but that seems low. It depends on if skirmishers suffer from move and shoot penalties or other things, they feel like the biggest loser of the book, which is sad because they are my favorite. -Wardancers seem expensive for STR 3 and might find it hard to find space in a list especially when you can deal str 3 from 32" away and run wildriders What they really hit a homerun on -str 4 short range for glade guard longbows, I was never in love with this bonus but saw it as a necessary aspect to keep woodelf shooting competitive, I am glad that they gave us back the 5th/6th edition increased range and potentially reimbursed us for the loss of this ability in other areas that feel more woodelf flavored. -32" range longbows across the army, it is incredible how powerful this will seems to be, we can force movement from enemy archers effectively giving them -1 to hit, if they are even able to shoot at all after the fact, above all else I love the flavor of this ability, it's only 2" but better is still better, nobody can argue with a straight face that woodelves are the greatest archers in the old world. -forest spirits of all kinds seem to be very powerful, the treeman only having 5 str is odd, but with armor bane 2, strangle roots, d3 stomp, and costing only 215 points they seem very strong! -great eagles going up from 50 to 60 points is entirely fair, eagles and dryads were more or less overpowered in 8th, if all the options listed are really how eagles can be kitted out they look incredible still. Nobody knows exactly what is going to happen, if units are smaller then wardancers might be viable for cutting things down quickly, if skirmish makes you ignore penalties for moving then maybe waywatchers aren't going to be missing half of the time as the best archers in the game, either way it looks great overall!
As someone who doesn't know the army very well, an image of each units models would have been a great addition. Otherwise, great stuff! Super keen for the Orcs and Goblins one!
@@SquareBasedOldWorld thanks heaps for letting me know. Maybe even some good non GW alternative? Or art? I just had no idea what any unit actually looked like, so it would have been helpful to me.

Amazing, thank you so much! Could you please also just leave the character sheets on the screen for sliiiightly longer. Was trying to track back to look at them and found it really hard to find them because they aren't up for long enough.

Rob, what an amazing rundown. I'm honestly fucking blow away. Insanely better than anyone else I've seen bumbling through a book. I hope you won't begrudge me a few typo-type corrections that I caught, this is just in case you were interested: at 14:26 "spells" is mispelled as "sells". at 18:56 you referred to them as an anvil unit right before, but seemed to slip up and call them a hammer unit here.
Great vid! would be cool to have an image of what the unit is when you're going through the unit description. New to playing Old World/Fantasy, so would be good to put names to faces so to speak, particularly some of the esoteric named ones

YES!!!!! This was the one Ive been waiting for!!!! WoooHooooooooo bring on the woodie!!!’n
Holy moly, everything I've ever wanted in a single video. ❤
THANKS XXX
So...so helpful. Thanks Rob!
I appreciate the comment so much thanks
If a longbow has hagbane tips does armour-bane proc at the same time as the poison? Also wondering if it’s better to just have more arrow shots than less but more high quality arrows. By the time you’ve upgraded 2 glade guard units you could have probably bought a third.
I'm going to say yes ATM but let's both double check
Preordered the books but this is the army box I am waiting for.
Definitely looking forward to any future videos about this army.
Really want play Wood Elves now lol.
I hope GW drop some new models for them.
Thank you for the amazing work you do for us all.
plastic Warhawks and/or Treekin would be the musts
The scuttlebutt is the 9 factions will be released in paired boxsets - with possibly Orcs and Goblins being split into two separate, respective releases. Each release will likely contain some new models, mirroring what the Brets and TKs got, likely cool centerpiece models, and possibly a redo of some old sculpts.
WE got lots of new miniatures in the final editions of WHFB, and things like Sisters of the Thorn and Wild Riders don't look as "aged" as models from other ranges. But their characters need some love for sure.
Perfect guide to the basics of the army, can't wait for more
"I hate that joke, I'm not putting it in" 😂
Hahahaha
For people who want to build warhawk riders, since models for that are somewhat hard to find:
Tyranid gargoyles are somewhat decently convertible to giant bats and large enough to fit glade guard models on top, which can make nice standins for warhawk riders.
alternatively, fell bats are the less work, but a lot more expensive option
My favourite faction ❤️. I had them many years ago, but not anymore. Old world will give me the chance to rectify this. Got the books & map on pre-order for now. Plan on building the treemen, dryads & treekin using some sylveneth my aos army also. Thanks, Rob, for the overview. You & val with all your hype has got me hyped once again, having started fantasy in the 4th edition.
That's a lot of work for this vid! Could you guys upload them as podcasts too please?
Being done already
This is stuff is hard. Not here to skate others but just try our hardest
My complaints are very few in number
-I loved str 4 dryads as it set them apart in the WE army as being a high value to cost unit in an army of very expensive models, probably deserving of the nerf to be fair, especially now that the only way to stop their ward save is with fire, and not the much more common magical attacks.
-Wardancers seem expensive for STR 3 and might find it hard to find space in a list especially when you can deal str 3 from 32" away and run wildriders
What they really hit a homerun on
-str 4 short range for glade guard longbows, I was never in love with this bonus but saw it as a necessary aspect to keep woodelf shooting competitive, I am glad that they gave us back the 5th/6th edition increased range and potentially reimbursed us for the loss of this ability in other areas that feel more woodelf flavored.
Another great overview vid cheers. Would love to have pictures of the models accompanying the explains.
As someone who doesn't know the army very well, an image of each units models would have been a great addition. Otherwise, great stuff! Super keen for the Orcs and Goblins one!
I'll try! Getting high res images is super hard ATM so I couldn't include them
@@SquareBasedOldWorld thanks heaps for letting me know. Maybe even some good non GW alternative? Or art? I just had no idea what any unit actually looked like, so it would have been helpful to me.
Forestwalk to Treeman Ancient to teleport it to Large Woodsinged template to teleport your big scary walking tree to better Tree Whack opponents? Nice!
Very clear and organized,This is simply the best video of its kind that I have ever seen. Will there be guide from other factions in the coming days?such as Bertonnia
For all factions
@@SquareBasedOldWorld wonderful,Hope to see them soon
Such a babe for putting content like this out
That means a lot to me thankyou
Thank you for making this video Rob, I love it.
My pleasure. More to come
Fantastic and funny vid Rob, really informative. One suggestion - could you consider leaving up the unit stats a little longer on screen for the viewer to peruse as they disappear quite quickly. Thanks!
Amazing, thank you so much!
Could you please also just leave the character sheets on the screen for sliiiightly longer. Was trying to track back to look at them and found it really hard to find them because they aren't up for long enough.
Love it! Keep them coming, no order in particular *cough* orcs and goblins *cough*
Very well put together and delivered - thanks.
You rule thankyou
@@SquareBasedOldWorld I'm really looking forward to the Dwarfs one. Right now I'm not looking forward to my Dwarfs having to go up against these Elves though!
Thanks so much for highlighting the typos. It's a fuck tonne of info to smash through especially off grainy screenshots
Solid wood joke there Rob. :)
Really chipped away at the humour
Great vid! would be cool to have an image of what the unit is when you're going through the unit description. New to playing Old World/Fantasy, so would be good to put names to faces so to speak, particularly some of the esoteric named ones
You are right. I'll try to add that feature. I've not really had time to review as I've just been full pace making
@@SquareBasedOldWorld Totally understandable! Keep at it :D
This was an amazing guide! Please make one for the orcs and goblins aswell! :D
I am very excited about running a unit of wardancers with a shadowdancer.
What a great upload
Really got my blood pumping for TOW
It’s nice here all your positive vibe's
👍💪
Man, what a slick video! Love this!
Thanks for the support babe x
