2010 Honda Odyssey Engine Noise Rattle

- Here I am showing you a common problem with the 3.5L iVTEC that is found in the Odyssey and Pilot. There may still be more problems but the Timing Tensioner is bad and has to be replaced first.
Just want to thank the video creator, have this van I use for my business took it to a mechanic and told me to scrap it because the noise is coming from engine, showed him this video and Lo and behold that was the issue! Saved me a ton of money from buying a new van.
What did they tell you cuz I'm having that same problem with my Honda pilot 2013 it's making the same noise :(
@@NinaG14 timing belt
You just saved my van from the scrap yard! Mechanic listened to it make this same sound and said the engine was shot. Just watched this and felt the tensioner knock like crazy. Think that was the problem all along.
How much did it cost you to fix
@@bryonaderhold2009 Got the rock auto timing belt kit and that was all my cost. I did it myself by watching UA-cam and took a weekend working in it off and on
Pep boys just told me it was my rod bearings and my engine was done .
Did it work ? Because I’m about to buy a car like this
@@yazmindior9917 It worked, wife is still driving it
I have a 2006 and just had this done by my mechanic. This video was great because you showed the engine noise before you fixed it. When I took it in I knew exactly what was needed. Timing belt, water pump was leaking and the hydraulic tensioner was making the noise. And the belt was loose just like the video. My mechanic did the full kit replacement and the engine now runs perfectly. Less then 1 grand in total. This video helped understand the issue. Thanks!
Or $170 if you do it yourself, on eBay you can buy OEM Honda timing belt kit
@@velizarmilutinovic2947 yeah I wish I knew how to do mechanic stuff. Could save a ton. Everytime I try I make a mess of it. Now I just pay for a pro who has the experience to do it right.
@@deseretodyssey8157
Sorry to disappoint you but most of those shops pay mechanics minimum wage, and they do very poor work make sure you always check that your wheel bolts are tightened before you leave any tire shop 😂
@@velizarmilutinovic2947 do you have a link?
@@velizarmilutinovic2947 😂
My daughter bought a 06 odyssey at a car lot. The guy told her that they had replaced the water pump and timing chain. This is making this exact noise and the guy told her that when they put the timing chain cover back on that they probably bent the belt guard. I don’t trust car lot salesmen so I’m going to look into that tensioner. Thanks for the video.
It is a belt not a chain but yes, the tensioner has to be changed with the belt.
As a Honda tech I love that sound. New t-belt and tensioner ands it’s good as new
No doubt better than the belt breaking running down the road doing 80 LOL
@@ralfsautomotive what if it sounds just like this, has a new timing belt, valve job, etc?
@@jillianchambers3267 It better not sound like this lol Valves may need readjusted
@@ralfsautomotive any tips to know for sure if it’s valves? Someone said maybe ac compressor?
@@jillianchambers3267 Long Screw Driver used like a Diagnostic Stethoscope put the handle to your ear and touch on the area where noise is coming from but be careful near rotating parts. as a matter of fact harbor freight sells the actual thing pretty cheap like 5 bucks that will help pinpoint the area. Valves would have to be checked with the covers off.
Thanks for taking the time to help others.
Very good video. Please do more Odyssey videos. So many people own this wands and they get older now a problems arise.
That one is not mine but there will be more as it is do for another Timing belt and a Valve Adjustment.
I'm impressed with the camera microphone...👏👏👏
Nice of you covering the license plate
Does that sound go away once the engine has warmed up?
my odyssey has that same rattle and it does go away once it warms up.
I did some diagnosing with my stethoscope and it does sound like the tensioner has some issues. My guess would be that both of our tensioners are starting to go bad and the reason for the sound going away is caused from our timing belts warming up and constricting. I'll be changing my timing belt and tensioner probably this weekend
JH mine was the water pump. i also replaced the timing belt.
Not trying to thread jock but I have a video on my channel of how to replace the tensioner and the timing belt on a Saturn Vue V6 (j series) if anyone has that particular car
@@physicalivan did it get louder as you first accelerate?
Awesome video sir. Great job
👍😁 very good
My 2011 pilot lost power the engine shaking let me know what cost to be like that 👍thank you
Thank you, having this same issue.
Do you fix it. What is the name of that part and can replace with out take off the belt
@@discoverywii if the hydrolic tensioner is bad you want to also change the other parts related to and including timing belt and probably water pump
My Honda Odessy 2003 makes a small ticking noise it's been like that for 4 years and still runs ok
Wow that's good to know. I have an 08 and don't have this issue. I thought something was wrong with the engine with sound at first.
My 05 touring just started this rattle noise now that weather started getting cold, it does go away after a few minutes after its warmed up
This is exactly my issue, what did you do?
What is the cost to get the timing belt done sir? Mine is don't the same thing. 06 Odyssey
Did you end up getting it fixed? I'm wondering how much it costs. I'm so stressed trying to figure this out.
They told me at the Honda dealership with my 3.0 accord with new water pump (which should be done for preventative maintenance) and new spark plugs would be about $1800. I ended up doing all of it including buying the tools to do it for about 800. Probably could be done 450-500 with tools.
So did you just replace the timing belt cause my 2010 Honda odyssey it’s making a real bad knocking noise like this?
Timing Belt Tensioner and a Valve Lash Adjustment
Thank you for the info my sisters odyssey is doing this
Thank you so much you save my day
I believe I may have this problem with my 2006 Odyssey but the noise gradually disappears once the engine is warmed up. It makes the noise when the engine is colder especially on cooler days. Would this be consistent with this problem has anyone ever had this
I would say time to adjust Valves
@@ralfsautomotive thanks Sir. It's got 315000 kms on it (Canada) which is roughly 196000 miles. Well cared for by last owner though. I'm told this isn't bad mileage for a Honda compared to say a dodge caravan. But I've also heard they get due for timing about that many miles. Does that sound about right?
@@robertb8629 You lucky if nothing happened! Timing Belt should be done every 60K Miles regardless, but these engines do tend to loose valve clearance. Usually I see the exhaust Valves going tight and the Intake get loose. I just checked mine (78K) as well and they where no longer in spec. It may not be a rule but is a common thing on the hondas as they do not use hydraulic lifters.
@@ralfsautomotive this is good to know thanks! I'm hoping and assuming the last owner had it regularly done as he seemed to have maintained it quite well (no rust despite Canada, all scratches filled, oil changed before selling, etc) he seemed to have some pride of ownership
mine does the same thing when i start it on the mornings it rattles like crazy once is warm the noise dissapears
After the timing belt was changed did the car went back to normal
That was the point😉
My engine is clicking. And extra oil is being burnt. More exhaust smoke...pistons. Rods?
Valves need to be adjusted on those, as for the oil usage I would lean toward Valve Guide Seals.
I would bet it's the piston rings causing excessive oil consumption if its a 2010 honda or higher
Plain and simple, they don't make vehicles like they used to.
LOL, Thank God!
I'm pretty sure its the timing belt tensioner is making the noise.
Yeah that's what it is
But it goes away when it gets to running temp
Why is this? My van is now doing this...
@@heribertonavarro7453
Do you have To remove the motor mount?
Where’s part 2 haha great vid
Unfortunately, I had an 07 Odyssey driven without any oil and could not turn it on until the next day. I place engine oil in it and it turned it on but it sounded just like this engine noise.
I have the same sound in my 2012 153,000 miles honda odyssey , mechanic said its a loose bearing and would cost $7,500 . should i get a second opinion ?
for $7500 I would get about 5 more opinions. Sorry that is not funny but YES absolutely do get another estimate.
@@ralfsautomotive thank you for the reply, im going to do that.
Buy another car.
Does this sound happen only when AC on? Ours stops rattling if we turn AC off. If so, is it the same tensioner problem?
AC on = higher than normal engine load so Yes, it is possible.
Thanks, I have 2007 with same issue any estimate on repair?
Not on UA-cam as there are too many Shops in different locations there are websites that show national averages for repairs. AAA has such a feature on their website
Dealership did it for about $800 with the parts I asked em to put in, a timing belt kit from Aisin and a new serpentine/drive belt. But the valve adjustment was quoted at another $700 at the same dealership.
Just purschased a 2008 odyssey and it has this exact noise, I think it needs a new timing belt anyway so I might as well get the whole kit.
Just loosely place your finger on the tensioner, you will know if it is bad or not! You may want to investigate the Valve lash as well it seems nobody ever wants to do that. It is adjustable on that engine. The One in the Video( and others) was way out.
@ Ralf’s Automotive Diagnostics and Repair
Can you just replace the belt Tensioner device, without replacing the timing belt itself? I had the original belt replaced at like, 90,000 miles...The van has 158,000 miles on it now. Please advise me and Thank you for the video!!
@@fistteam Yes, you can do that no problem at all.
Did this fix the issue or did it persist after the timing belt change?
That is the Common problem with these Vehicles and Valve's need to be adjusted. Yes Vehicle is fixed.
Do timingg belt, valve adjustments and fluids and you'll have and Acura,Honda forever
Did that sound go away when the engine warmed up?
?? It is a tensioner problem has nothing to do with a warm engine. If you have a cold rattle valves need to be adjusted. It may even say that in the manual.
If my van is making this exact noise should I get the repairs you recommending done asap? I had my timing belt, tensioner, water pump changed at 180k at Honda dealer and their warranty is 12/12 now the van has 211k and its making this noise right after I had taken it to the dealer again for an oil change I feel like they did something. It makes the noise more frequently if I have the A/C on please help
If the A/C is on the engine does load a bit more. I would say to have it diagnosed.
I have a 2005 Honda Odyssey and I have a whining noise coming from the right side of the motor not where the belt is at what you think it can be
That can be a number of things! Impossible to answer
@@ralfsautomotive cause I have took it to 4 different mechanics and they said the noise is coming from between the motor and transmission
It couldn’t be the torque converter cause I did do the Transmission
How do you manually engage the a/c to pump in dye to look for a hole the the a/c system?
Go to the Parts Store they have cans with dye use them as you would charging the system. I would not trigger a compressor manually.
I have a question, my wife has put diesel on my 14 Odyssey!! took it to the dealer that cost me 800 bucks to fix and I have to say maybe 4 months after I have the same rattle sound as the one in this video, but in mines it goes in n out some days sounds some days NOT. But this rattle noise happens when the car is cold I’m from NY and as soon THE CAR warms up the rattle goes away. What can I do so the rattle disappear, please hope to hear from you, have a bless day thank you
One other issue is the Valve adjustment. I had many of them over the years make noise. Timing Belt is still subject however.
Also, OUCH I live in the wrong area, I would have charged about 200 to get the diesel out and that would have included the tow LOL.
@@ralfsautomotive thank you so much for your reply! Yes we both live in the wrong area LOL! WOW 200 bucks with the tow smh! Again I live in NY so here everything is expensive 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ thank you again for your advice, I will look into it
@@chrisco1129 I hope you figure it out
I’m having the same noise in my 2012 odyssey, mechanic is saying he needs to replace lifters and timing belt. But I’m thinking it can just be the timing belt, he said he has to access lifter to get to the timing belt anyways.
I would find a different Mechanic. Timing Belt(Tensioner) and Belt are very easy to do. Replace the Key in the Crank as well. I would also highly recommend a Valve Train Adjustment as they(Rocker Arms) are usually too loose.
Hey I just bought 2012 Odyssey and started making the same noice next day. What is the fox for this ?
Thanks brother
Hi my odyssey Honda 2011 has code p0523 what can I do
Engine-codes.com
Can you make a full video on how to do this please?
I have a Video where the engine is out of the Vehicle if that helps. But I am about to change the Belt on mine and could make a Video of it as it is going to be in the Car.
Wow my van just started making that sound the vsa light came in and the engine light came on help pkeasei was like what the hell. How much would that cost?
Mine did this Dame sound just now
@@rogersanders967 Remember that more often than not you will need to lash adjust the valves as well.
sorry I did not see the reply. Anyway, I an sure by now it is to late to answer but for the rest of folks having the same question. I would say plan on 3-4 hours of labor.
How much did it end up costing? I have the same issue.
@@WhitneyAbrina like 150.00 I think cause I bought all the parts so the cost was very low thank god.
How much does it cost to fix it?
$800?
My alarm on mines keep coming on and I want to turn it off
Idk if anyone will read this or not but I'm hearing a noise like this and when I initially accelerate it seems to be louder. I can hear nothing if I have foot on break then if I tap on the gas pedal I hear the noise stop and go every time I tap I hear the sound and I let off it tapers off. Is this maybe timing belt?
The Honda's have Valves that should periodically be checked for proper adjustment and the noise I was talking about is the timing belt tensioner by itself. And Yes I try to read all the comments.
@@ralfsautomotive thank you so much for your response. Is the timing belt tensioner the timing belt or something different ? Happy halloween 🎃
@@WhitneyAbrina - This video will show the Timing Belt and Tensioner. ua-cam.com/video/tWQ6gV82x0E/v-deo.html Seems to be a common problem when people don't do this service as recommended by Honda every 105,000 miles.
Also, the valves periodically need adjustments along with the rocker bolts retorqued to specs as they loosen up over time.
How much did this cost to fix
These Jobs are not that high.

Timing BELT tensioner. Hondas don’t use chains.
You drunk? Look at the description

1:25 is when sound begins.
I did the timing belt job with honda dealer parts and my tensioner is out. That was 24k miles/2.5 years ago. 😡 Time for me to do this job again...
Belt should be fine and the tensioner can be done quite fast. If you do timing think about adjusting the valves!
Long story short??? You took way to much time pausing etc to get the dang issue out
Do you have the part 2 where you adjust the timebelt?
Vehicle got new belt and tensioner. No sorry I do not. Book time is about 4.5 hrs it is not a bad job.
Changed the tensioner and it worked thanks very much
I changed the tensioner and had the valves adjusted and it’s still making a ticking sound until it hits about 2500 rpms. What could that be??
I would not know unless I hear it. Are you sure the Valves got adjusted properly?
Torque rocker arm bolts to spec. Recheck valve clearance.
is there any check engine light on ? Engine VVT oil pressure switch sensor possible...
@@oeungmao1 no engine light. Ticking is pretty loud and annoying. Took it into one shop and they said just install a new engine with 100k for $1200. Thinkin about it
