Finding South - New Zealand | An Off-Road Journey Through The South Island's Backcountry
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- We have always wanted to freely tour the beautiful, but harsh South Island of New Zealand, and after plenty of smaller trips it was time to experience a more extended journey.
Our aim was to make no plan, explore the less explored and drift with the weather throughout the Island, all while trying to experience as much as possible off the tar seal.
Join us for this 20-minute film following the highs and lows we encounter on the adventure.
Shot and Edited by Joel McDowell & Andrew Lewthwaite.

By far the best 4wd touring video here in NZ! well done
Thanks Emile! Hopefully we can start to put out more soon
Amazing how a 4wd and camp set up opens new worlds .
I am taking 2023 off to explore NZ in my LandCruiser, and you've made me even more excited by watching this . 👍
I been doing it for 7 years we head south every February a lot of these places down there have big winds your better off taking out back seats and making a bed that way if it’s raining or windy as you just jump in the back and bed is ready none of us use roof tents or swags been there done that
Excellent storytelling, actually something of the best I've seen. Very good balance between the more expedition-oriented stuff on one side, and the more personal thoughts and experiences on the other. A pleasure to watch!
Beautiful filming! I recognised some of the spots, like the Hakataramea Pass and Waimak Valley. This South Islander, stuck in Oz, just got a little more homesick.
Thanks Nick. There are so many stunning and very quiet parts of the South Island - we only scratched the surface really. West coast would be a dream!
the quality of this video is as good as it gets on UA-cam, very well done
Cheers Douglas! We poured a lot into it and we're stoked to hear this sort of feedback. It sounds like people are keen for more!
The production in this is outstanding. Really enjoyed it Joel
Cheers mate! It was a fun project to piece together
I rode my bicycle the length of your lovely country in 2009, and left my heart and soul there. I’ve missed it ever since. Your story didn’t help matters whatsoever. Well done, folks.
This video put a big smile on my face! I very much enjoyed the slow pace and incredible scenery. Back in 2011, I had the luck to live and travel around New Zealand for 10 months. And despite exploring almost all corners of the country, I never knew that New Zealand was home to so many incredible offroad trails. I seriously cannot wait to come back and get out there to explore this amazing country once again.
Awesome content bro! Great to see some kiwi content creators showcasing our awesome backyard. Quality video, great storytelling, awesome journey.
Amazing video
Love New Zealand
What a video ! The atmosphere is magnificent! The video is beautiful, the landscapes too. everything! Bravo
Thank you! Hopefully the beginnings of many more 🤞🏻
Fantastic video mate. Well done

Nice work mate. Production is 👌🏾
Excellent video guys. I really miss NZ, you guys captured the South Island so well.
Thank you!
Well done, that’s made bloody home sick further. Living in Aussie land. I travelled many of the spots growing up. Love to see your mud map. Top videography and photos also. Masterfully edited together.
Thanks so much for the kind feedback! We loved putting it together. I am hoping to put out a rough itinerary on my Instagram sometime this week. Already have some stuff in the works for a potential Australia trip!
what a beautiful trip.
Cheers Kenny
Awesome video so much great scenery 🤙
New Zealand is incredible! Thanks bro
Nice work guys! Cool story - and that cinematography is on point. Was an awesome watch
Cheers bro! Can’t wait to do some more of this 🤞🏻
Hello.
I'd just like to say that there's not a lot of times in my life when I have stopped to glance at the awe that is New Zealand. You have done this so much justice and I honestly think you have managed to capture a small essence of the not only the culture aka your group, but the very reason why we are the most amazing country.
Amazing work I'm super impressed
Awesome video Joel, really well put together and edited. There was a lot of familiar territory which has made me more excited to get back out and see it again, this video is a great snapshot as to what our back yard looks like and how to go an see it up close. Thanks for sharing.
This was so epic to watch, so beautifully shot and narrated, looking forward to the next!

Great video, well done on your mainland adventure, you did go to a few great tracks and places,But you have just scratched the surface, down here. Come see the rest sometime. 😎
A bit late to the party but congratulations on the engagement, I'll be 33 years in May and you bought a tear to my eye with your proposal. Finding the right person and living your best life together is unfathomabley good. It seems like you have a most excellent start
An Aucklander who lived in the South island for 6 years.
I live here, but the South Island stole my heart.

Epic! Would it be possible to get a rough itinerary of your trip? Gonna make tracks down south later this year and would be stoked to visit some of those wicked spots...
Agreed, an itinerary would be epic 🤞🏼
I’ll try to put something together! We met a guy in a campsite that created an app for route finding. It’s called 4x4 Explorer and I can honestly say that I highly recommended it. I’ll try share some stuff over on my Instagram in the coming weeks
I'm in the south island, an itinerary is definitely needed, some awesome scenery that I haven't seen!
This is the most beautiful thing I've watched in a long time, makes me miss New Zealand so much, thanks for uploading in 4K!!
Great stuff, thinking I should do this in my disco.

Incredible
This is freaking awesome mate! I’m saving up to do these types of adventures
Great story telling Joel. Enjoyed the film
Cheers Jason!
I've never seen a better NZ 4wd drive video. Awesome. I'm just a little jealous of you. We live in a beautiful country, more people should get out and see it like you did. I'm slowly building my shorty Prado to do similar trips. Your video us inspiring. 👍👍
Well done guys really enjoyed this cheers for aus
This is epic!
brilliant well done, great story, scenery and videography...
So bloody good mate! What an adventure 🙏🏼
I love Invercargill, the closest thing to a time machine. It has a quiet charm about it.
I love how a mild gravel road seems a challenge to you guys. What I see as another day, is an adventure and the story you tell .. showing that adventure is bloody brilliant. I would hire you on the spot to tell our story if I could afford you. I'm glad you had a wicked time down south, its a beautiful place, one i probably take for granted. You are welcome back anytime and hell, even hit me up. More than happy to show you the rougher side. Although i don't think it will tell the romantic side of the south your story told but... I know a few spots. lets see what i can come up with.
Awesome video, well made, thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed it.
Great video bro. Enjoyed that... looking forward to taking our caravan down south for a year of exploring
This was incredible, excellent mini doco!
I watch so many travel/4x4/camping videos... Dreaming and wishing.... I am so happy to see one so awesome in NZ, as whilst there is probably not many epic journeys like this... it's here! Even I can afford to do this when I can find time... inspirational man! Keep it up!
Awesome vid fellas! I’ve got to say it’s dream of mine to ship my 4wd from Aus to the South Island 👌🏼
That would be awesome! Thinking about coming over to Aussie later in the year and doing a trip. Just need to work out logistics
What an amazing video, focused from start to end. Great editing!
what a journey
Amazing! Makes me want to ship my 4wd over from aus and see more of your beautiful country. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Fantastic
Great stuff. To answer your final question. A more detailed look. You did a brief scan. I suggest you dig deeper on each route, check those graves stones and see the stories of those before us. Why does this road exist, how was it made, when, who kept it going, which town did it go to, why is no one there now. The real stories are fascinating
Epic!
This video is sooo well-made! Enjoyed every minute of it. Well done mate.
Class video mate! Love to see the dmax performing best ;)
Amazing scenery and trip, thanks for sharing 👍 The South Island is definitely on my bucket list of destinations!
