Defending the Nation With Secretary of Defense James Mattis
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 тра 2018
- Recorded on Friday, May 11, 2018 in Washington DC.
In his first televised interview in almost a year, Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis sits down with Peter Robinson to discuss a wide range of issues facing the United States Armed Forces at home and across the globe. Earlier this year, Secretary Mattis published the National Defense Strategy, the first such document in a decade. Secretary Mattis describes why the document is an important blueprint for the Armed Forces and what he hopes to accomplish by publishing it.
After a moving story about a captured Iraqi suicide bomber, Secretary Mattis describes the complicated nature of our relationship with China and the possible flash points in the South China Sea. A discussion follows about Europe and how political controversies with Russia affect our military relationship and why Secretary Mattis believes NATO is not a threat to them. Moving on to the Middle East, Secretary Mattis defines our mission in Syria, comments on the use of chemical weapons, and explains why that theater is the most complex security conundrum he’s seen in his forty-year career. He says that the refugees coming out of Syria are more traumatized than refugees he’s seen anywhere else in the world. He discusses the need to work with the international community on the refugee crisis as, “It is a tragedy much worse than anything BBC or CNN can show.”
In the Far East, Mattis describes how a coordinated effort across different departments of the US federal government and allied countries have achieved a dialogue that may lead to the denuclearization of North Korea. Secretary Mattis also makes the case that the Iranian regime and the Iranian people are different constituencies with different priorities and agendas. He relates how he is reforming the Pentagon’s provisioning and spending policies and why it’s important for the military (the seventeenth largest economy in the world) to be a responsible steward of the nation’s tax dollars.

America could use more men like James Mattis.
hancock63
They do and their in the White House and the Pentagon and ALL JUST AS MAD
America can use more "men" of any stripe.
Remember, there had to be a waiver for him to serve, and Sect. Mattis has and continues to show himself worthy of that. He was and is the right person for Sect. of Defense right now, period. The more you hear from him and about him, the more impressed you are with him, is my observation.
They are called Marines.
Bingo. Mattis takes his orders from the "Chief" . . . and he could care less about "inspiration" or refugees. Nice sentiment, though~~
"You own us and we're accountable to you." Glad to hear somebody in government who gets it.
pkyamaha17 he's probably just saying what people want to hear.
Go watch him before he was nominated. He says the same kind of things. He's perhaps the only legit man in a administration of crooks.
God bless you James Mattis for your unwavering commitment to the protection of America and it's allies. Thank you Peter Robinson for years upon years of intelligent interviewing. Americans like you are what make America such an inspirational power. I hope you both continue to do what you do for many years to come.
Sonny Copeland Well put!
This man just oozes integrity. You feel safe with men of this calibre in office.
until he said nobody has used chemical weapons in the last 100 years.
The syrian rebels used them then the US used it as an excuse to attack syria
The last person who used them (besides syrian rebels) is Saddam Hussein, who was supplied with them by the USA.
Yes!
HA! Integrity? "we have no evidence of a chemical attack, but I believe there was one." He said that recently knowing damn well that the Syrian rebels (ISIS/AL-QAEDA) were the ones who used those weapons.
nelsano3 ...Integrity..that's the word I was looking for!
I already liked Jim Mattis a lot, but wow. That was as good a portrait of a supremely confident, outstandingly competent, and amazingly dedicated public servant as you're ever going to get.
I never knew about the man, until Trump mentioned him. I love, that he's so open and doing interviews, shows that he's really dedicated to the American people. btw, I'm watching this from Estonia and I'm glad to know that we have so capable allies
m3dicated and your freedom matters to America.
With any luck and lots of prayers, President Trump and his team will undo the damage done by the Globalist Thugs.
God bless America and God bless our Allies.
God bless Estonia
Well duh He's a Marine.
We are so lucky to have a man like Mattis at the helm
I sleep like a baby with Mattis ,Pompeo , Pence, and Trump on duty
Mattis should’ve been the president, not secdef.
“I don’t have stress, I create it.” America is in good shape with him at the wheel.
"If something is slipping away it is internal" - Mattis
Mad dog is Spot-on again. Well underlined.
bad leadership
Look at this video if you want to hear what someone walking in the light sounds like...
What a principled thoughtful man. American made.
One of the smartest military man ever, very inspirational.
Always knows the data to discuss and how to handle the shortfalls of the data. Love listening to him speak! He is a genius on Strategy issues! Thank you for continuing to serve our country Secretary Mattis! You are a Hero to me!
Educational interview, General Mattis is a great American. God bless
Great interview. Mattis is an amazing man, to say the least.
Great content!
Greatings from Austria.
Thank you.
James Mattis for president!
This is one great man.
Eloquent, articulate and among the wisest statesman. "Strong men have sound ideas and the force to make these ideas effective" Andrew Mellon.
God be always with you JAMES MATTIS.
Warrior munk is wise.
Inspiring and informative!
Secretary Mattis is not only a true patriot but also a wise warrior and philosopher. The United States of America is safe with people like him in high office, whether military or otherwise. The Free World also may view him as someone who can be counted upon to do the right thing regarding threats to world peace and security. James Mattis is a keeper.
Finally an interesting guest. Good Show
If your standard for interesting is Mattis that's pretty unfair. It's damn near impossible to hold a candle to the Mad Dog.
James Mattis is the best Secretary of Defense we have ever had in the US. Thank you Secretary Mattis for your outstanding service for decades.
What a nuanced, thoughtful interview! Been waiting for another interview with General Mattis since I watched the last one.
What an admiral man. Thank you for your service sir. Great message of respect and unity. America needs your kind of leadership and we have you.
Mad respect to the man. An inspiration.
The hope for a better tomorrow and the fortitude to act and bring it to fruition. God bless America. All the best and good luck.
Mattis sat down with Peter back in 2015 on Uncommon Knowledge when Mattis was a fellow at the Hoover Institution. Fun watching them chat again
Thank you sec of defense MATTIS!!!
You’re the man!!!
God bless you!
Best defense minister the US has ever had in my opinion. He gave me hope that long term we (russia) and US will be able to return our relationship to pre Iraq invasion levels. Huge respect for the warrior monk.
I hope our two nations never meet on the battlefield. Does your media push anti America crap all the time. Ours seems hell bent to launch us into world war three
joe Seems like Trump is going for literal world peace. First inviting Russia back to G7 and now negotiating with Kim.
And doing his damndest to reorganize the global trade system to be more favorable to the US. I still think the allies will buckle on trade, their leaders can't take the heat from their business interests like Trump can, especially Merkel. Notice how none of them issued "retalitory" tariffs yet, just threats. They know shit like 270% duties on dairy and 10% on autos (to our 2.5%) is absurd. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone dropped their tariffs and barriers and we had true free trade? We wouldnt even need trade deals. We already tried lowering ours and waiting for the rest if the world to reciprocate, that didn't work.
Joe I have no worries about that. Even during the cold war we never meet on the battlefield and that will hopefully not change in the future. We got some issues to work out like Syria including Iran and the mess that is Ukraine but i am hopefull that both nations can find solutions and ways out of this spiral of hatred and madness. In fact if you look at history we actually tend to work together against a bigger threat/evil. Maybe the threat of islamic terrorism will bond us more together.
Regarding the news in Russia. Well its not as bullshit as CNN for sure. Our MSM is not really anti US actually but more anti NATO in general. A little bit of fearmongering for domestic political usage like Mattis is explaining it in this video. Mostly consists of "NATO troops on our border = threat to our national security" blablabla.
I personally dont believe that we have to fear the few thousands of international NATO soldiers on our border but i can understand why NATO allies feel uneasy sharing a border with a nation with a massive military like us and want additional support from US/France/Britain etc.
Greatest American alive today.
Thank You for this very informative discussion. Sec. Mattis is a patriot!
Thanks for uploading this.
That's a great man.
Why isn't this guy the President?
Because he wasn't allowed to run for president legally.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
He's a marine, not a politician. MAGA Semper Fi
Derrick Graham Because everyone has a role. I don't want a guy with dencher lisp this bad negotiating with Kim tbh. He has extraordinary skills in other categories. No way he could have beaten Hillary either.
The current President brought General Mattis into Government over the strong objection of the opposition party.
I have been searching and so glad I found that Peter is STILL Hosting this show.
So.much respect for this man..love listening to him talk.
He is so intelligent Amazing.
Gen. Mattie. Great job. God Bless You. America first. Prayers to U. 🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸❤️❤️
When I can't find motivation or hope this man reminds me how
That was pretty damn good and a Salute to Secretary Of Defense to James Mattie. His energy especially to the young people...like myself and to the country as a whole is very much needed and is a like a blessing being poured out over us. I was honestly surprised to see and hear his words...from a U.S. Navy Seaman Div. 273 (HM Hospital Corpsman) Secretary Of Defense I salute you 👨🏻✈️
Great interview - great man!
I clicked on this intending just to skim through it but ended up watching the whole thing. Fascinating stuff.
just came here from Jocko Willink as he said this man is a good leader. Never heard of Jim Mattis before. Very inspiring interview! Love from Germany!
Peter, watching you go from brown hair to gray has been a real joy. You have done a great job assisting Americans To see what is behind the intriguing political and economic systems. Your guests of course are the best of the best. You know it seems like America is turning around and many of us old timers see a light at the end of that tunnel...thanks Peter
Good video. I enjoyed watching it.
Great guy! great interview! love the part Mattis say I don't know. What an example to the people that does not know when to say I don't know...
Inspiring.
This is a person I would love to sit with, over a cup of coffee, and discuss world affairs with to get a real feel for what's going on around the world!
When I work out I always do one extra rep for the Air Force, one extra rep for my senior NCO, and one extra rep for Secretary Mattis.
Didn't know he was born in Pullman, WA untill he gave a speech for the NROTC Cadets over at WSU. I was a PLC guy at the time and it was a genuine honor to meet him as a USMC Reservist myself.
I love Mr.Mattis his Such an intillegent gentleman ...his slow to speak but full of knowledge !
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
He is outstanding material; good to have him.
thank you Secretary Mattis
God damn, that first encore question, bravo Peter.
A truly identifiable role model for what statesmanship is all about.
Good interviewer. Straight to the point.
That's my CG! Well use to be and always will in my heart.
Mattis is one of a kind. One of the great Americans of this century.
I can't possibly take the smile off my face whenever I see Mattis. It's like the man was born to be the lead the military
I even like it when Mattis tells us the same story for the 100th time. So glad he's where he is! Stellar pick!
Every time i hear this guy I am more impressed. He, from what I've seen, has yet to "deflect" a question posed to him. Wise choice for this post.
"I don't have stress, I create it." God bless you, Secretary Mattis.
A lot of respect for Mattis.
Sadam Hussein also used them. But Mattis is correct that as a whole, CWs have not been used for a loooong time.
The media told you Saddam used chemical weapons. He did not. Mattis is not willing to lie to you to keep that facade going.
I was thinking about Saddam using them, too, and wondered why he didn't mention them. Probably just forgot in the moment.
He did use them in the First Gulf War, against Israel, did he not?
LORD OF FREEDOM "Chemical Ali" should sound familiar to you.
Yeah they where used in the Iran Iraq war and in the Al Anfal campaign.
This man is a source of inspiration.
Please, sir, run for President.
Wow!!this man has conviction as if he speaks the peoples truth!! He would make a man that is the best for the people!:)
Mattis is a respectable man
Thank you, Mr. Robinson, for this terrific interview.
General Mattis is such an inspiration
Mattis is the most American man I've ever seen.
Mattis should be Defense Secretary for life.. hes just too valuable
God bless him.
True Warrior.
Legendary Mattis
I believe everything is about the principles and strategies to achieve between quicker or slower or achieve perfectly, or never achieve. Principles are fixed there and can’t be changed. The strategies are catalyst to make it happen easier or less effort and less damages. The principles are the most important things there for us to learn and follow. The strategies are the wisdom around the principles and make the principles of our country’s greatness move forward and achieve greatness forever. If our country America’s own established recognitions of the principles have brought America great, as long as we strongly and firmly follow the principles, surely we don’t have to spend more time for our own established and fixed principles, but to learn and educate often for Americans to understand more and better to cherish and follow only. Strategies are different from issues to issues, time to time, countries to countries by America’s patriotism, greatness, experience and great wisdoms. This is why I like to listen more to learn more and understand better.
Mattis 2020!
How can I connect with Peter M. Robinson regarding a follow up story regarding the military cutting waste. General Mattis might even applaud it.
I would like to see a president James Mattis. I hope he’ll run in 2024. We need a calm, well read military man as our president.
I REALLY appreciate him stressing the disatinction between the Iranian Regime and the Iranian People.
A true patriot and one who has dedicated his whole life to public service. A man to look up to.
I love how he corrected him. Features in the South China Sea. Atolls as you called them.
Hard to interview him, Levels above people and he steals the show. Presidential indeed
Super Mann! Eigentlich müsste es heißen „Defending the free, open and democratic societies.“ Tolles Interview. Ich finde es auch immer sehr wichtig, ganz klar zwischen einem korrupten Regime (Russland, China, Iran ...) und der jeweiligen Bevölkerung zu unterscheiden. Viele Grüße an die UA-cam-Gemeinde (übrigens in China vom dortigen Regime komplett abgeschaltet ...) aus Deutschland ❤️
Mattis is one hell of a man.
This talk inspired confidence. Phew. All the daily madness we see in our domestic politics seem silly when I hear a leader like this. Makes me want to quit squabbling with my countrymen over liberal/conservative or Democrat/Republican and just work together to make our country a better place for the next generation 🇺🇸
Our general saint Mattis truly is an officer and a gentleman
SOD General Mattis should do more public speaking.
Having a strategy is essential for enabling health care and health care insurance as well. I think there is a great need to employ Gen Matis’ strategies in American politics. AEI president Arthur Brooks is boosting this course, but has not explained this compelling part of the big picture. Perhaps a round table discussion of American domestic policy is in order.
this Marine will do everything possible to avoid war . but when he says go. ya know he is not in it to lose. thank God
Did the cut in defense budget result in any increase of efficiency in DoD? If not then something is wrong.
"I don't have stress, I create it." Mattis for President!
James Mattis is a legend. He stands among Lincoln, Churchill, and MLK.
One of President Trump's greatest decisions was making General Mattis out Secretary of Defence! America & our allies are safe under his command.
OBAMA FIRED THIS LEGEND. sHOWS U HOW STUPID OBAMA WAS
gotta love those good ole Marines!!
So glad he's running the defense department. He reminds me of the older generation. Americans that came back from ww2
General MadDog Mattis is the man. I wish I could spend a day around him and observe how he reacts to daily interactions.
