This scene is my favorite of the whole movie. maybe it is because of how close it is to me, when my parents got divorced I was four years old and I grew up with my wonderful mother, my father reappeared when I was seven and we treated ourselves like strangers, a kind of happiness on the horizon was glimpsed but it all started again ... and I never saw himagain ... whenever I see this movie it reminds me of that strange feeling. (sorry for the sermon)
There's no such thing as "the best film ever made," as it is all subjective. But Paris, Texas resonates with me in a way few movies ever have or ever will. So many dads leave, but this one came back.
I just watched this movie last night. I loved this scene. I love how Hunter doesn't even know to refer to Travis as 'Uncle' ("father's brother") and the "Just lucky I guess". In an interview, Jason Lee about how Stanton was like Chaplin, and this scene captures that perfectly. Sparse dialog, the walking backwards, Hunter tripping, walking separately until Travis decides to cross the street.
