    Sure is a beautiful place where you fly.
    Brilliant plane. Real grass roots stuff that shows how simple flight can be if you understand the principals properly and have mastered them.
    I rather watch something like this fly than some factory made pretty thing.
    Thanks for putting it up and sharing.

    I did something similar to this about 4 years ago except i ised the long shaft of the weed eater as the main stick for the plane so its basically a stick with weed eater motor wing and tail section and landing gear and prop. And it flies amazing and its huge and does insane aerobatics for a 2 stroke engine more scale like aerobatics and not 3d flying

    So your in a cargo plane, air dropping cats on Canada in hopes of getting rid of all the sentient rats (CIA projects do be like that). And all of a sudden one of THESE comes swooping in, with the rat onboard firing the two AK47's strapped to the wings.

    Hi James,
    Fantastic work on your gasser plane. Flies like a charm!
    I'm preparing a weed eater engine for a plane and all the info that you share here and on your flitetest article is great.Thanks a lot for the tips, best regards,

    Sweet! After seeing Samm Shepherd's chainsaw flyer I thought I have an unused 31cc two cycle weedwacker in my shed that hasn't been used as years. Fun to see this come up on my list of recommended videos!

    Did you replaced the original CDI from the engine? what kind of adaptation/reformaitons you did in the engine?
    thank you very much. I will be very happy to get an answer. Your model has a really awesome flight! much better than many high detail models. (sorry for my bad english, i am from Argentina)

      +Ferdinand Quiqueran I honestly didn't do anything to the engine except take everything I possibly could off (plastic extra metal things, I even ground some off... i might have gone a bit crazy :) But then I made an adaptor for the propeller: basically I welded three nuts to each other in row and then threaded one side onto the engine and the other side I threaded a bolt into that held the prop on. I added a servo to the carbonator to move the throttle too. Check out my article here: flitetest.com/articles/weed-eater-giant

      MarkG well, I did just make it up off my head : ) but I can give you some basic numbers I found. I looked a bit on RCGroups and found a chart that says if you have a wing this big, then make your body this long... ect. I knew I wanted to have a 8 foot wingspan so i made everything based on that. That be said, I did after this video cut the body shorter and i think it flew better. Here's an article I made that has more details: flitetest.com/articles/weed-eater-giant
      Best of luck, and let me know how it goes!

      James Cleveland Thanks for the reply. I'm wondering why you went with the large 38g servos. Do you really need that much torque to move the ailerons and elevators? Also what are you using to control all the servos?

      +James Cleveland Awesome job my friend, I am very pleased to see a young man like yourself build such a cool plane. While many kids your age are stuck in front of a computer screen or tv here you are outside doing what kids should be doing. A huge thumbs up to you and your plane.

    • @jamescleveland2297

      I used a mechanical linkage between the servo arm and the throttle arm on the weedeater's carb

    • @jamescleveland2297
      @jamescleveland2297  8 років тому

      +Luxxy HD I made it myself. Basically welded three nuts together in a row and threaded one end on the motor and the other end was something I could thread a bolt into that held the prop on...

      Any kind of sleeve over the shaft will work as a prop adapter. Even a plastic plumbing piece.

  • @waleswideman1
    @waleswideman1 8 років тому +1

    How do you work the throttle with a servo? i just fly electric. been wanting to make one out of a weedeater can you make a build video or review? that ad ass man

    • @jamescleveland2297
      @jamescleveland2297  8 років тому

      +Wales Wideman Well, I'm in college currently so the probability of me making a build video is pretty slim :) But I will do my best to describe what I did:
      On any small engine there is a carbonator. That carbonator has a cable that comes from the throttle control and attaches to some mechanism (a turning arm, a pull type) That mechanism should move back and forth when moving the throttle control on the [weedwaker]. Now, you need to make a linkage (metal wire) to go from your servo to that moving arm/plat/whatever. Now, on mine, i had to cut the plastic swivel arm a bit and drill a whole in the plastic arm on the engine to make something for the linkage to go into. Don't hesitate to ask if something in this description didn't make sense!
      Cheers

      +James Cleveland so it's like setting up a controller horn for the control surfaces. thanks man. now just gotta wait on funds for my project

    • @jamescleveland2297
      @jamescleveland2297  8 років тому +1

      +Wales Wideman Ya, Exactly! Except I would try and use the plastic piece that turns on the carbourator. Most of all - use your creativity to make it work. There is more than one way to skin a cat, you know :)
