  • Well, let's try again. It might just work…
We've been away a couple of weeks, but the internet munchkins have been pedalling hard. We //think// there's enough gas in the tank to get this one airborne.
No new superchats tonight - we'll answer the ones from two weeks again when the live show failed.
Welcome to our weekly live Q&A session - we talk guitars, amps and pedals of course, but sometimes also lawn-mowing, philosophy and other things.
And PLEASE SUBSCRIBE to the channel. It's totally free, just click the button. It helps.
We're all here to hang out, ask better questions and be among likeminded humankind. So please do be kind and civil, or Master Blaster BV will have you out of there.
You can buy TPS merch to support our efforts www.thatpedals...
You can buy guitar pedals and gear in the USA from That Pedal Shop: www.thatpedals...

Thank you Dan & Mick ! Great stuff as always. Celebrating my 60th birthday today and grateful to have been a guitarist ( and pedal enthusiast ) for 46 of those years. Love it more than ever. Thank you two for keeping me informed on the latest and fueling my never ending tone chasing. Best Wishes - John

Modelers work on the track work in the mix work for front of house and work for in ears and monitoring
If you don’t get the feels in the room
Try a new cab/speaker and try eqing the send to that speaker
You don’t just plug in and bam
Amp makers test and fiddle until they get it “correct “
Try that on a modeler and you’ll be surprised
Also running a tube pre or tube compressor helps a ton
Also output buffer and signal makes the biggest difference

Recently an audiologist tested me and found I had "classic noise induced hearing loss." Yes, from over 40 years of playing rock and roll! But, I wasn't in need of hearing aids, yet. After watching the "hearing" show, I ordered some variable attenuation earplugs from Minuendo. Adustable from 7 to 25 dB attenuation. I probably need them more at practice, but could use them at louder gigs. I sure hope they help preserve what I have left!

As Dan mentioned showing off his pedalboard, I thought I’d chime in to say I’d love it if you both would do like a quarterly VLOG each on your pedalboards. You get to use so much amazing gear that it would be nice to see what you like enough to have your boards in a somewhat regular frequency.

My favorite guitar ever in almost 40 years of playing is a Rickenbacker 330/12.
Gigged it live for about a year in a band that was basically a prog-metal band....I could shred on it better than any other guitar I have ever played and I only think I touched the tuners about half a dozen times for minor tweaks.
Every other guitar I played in that band would get most of a set of strings not only knocked out of tune on every song, but broken on a weekly basis.

I've spent countless hours revisiting patch settings on my Digitech RP360 XP I needed for the church band. I cannot replicate many of the artist dedicated patches I've developed from suggestions and ccmparisons with recordings. The instant access to the sets of pedals far outweighs the "sound quality" most listeners probably won't notice. Not only the convenience, but the monetary saving and space and build requirements make these settings unobtainable any other way.

  • @Youtubemademeaddahandle

Time spent practicing "playing" without "thinking" must be apportioned separately from "theory" (logical thinking). The trick is to inform the "feeling" with the "new" information acquired through logic. When it's time to "perform" time has run out for thinking. I practice "not thinking" before meeting the band to contribute to their "practice". New ideas are explored afterwards, on my own time, in preparation for the next :practice session".

Hi Guys. I'm so glad you're back in the saddle and that the audio and video quality are so high. That seemed obvious the instant Dan was playing in. Your voices were clear and warm too. Well done. I wanted to follow up with yet more gratitude. Mick, as you're considering age 50, I just cleared 65, a number which sparks some reflection. After having left a challenging past life behind, mostly, I'm just another guy on a new learning curve. You two have made it wonderful. (As has TheGigRig.) I used to near the end of a very tough and sometimes gruesome day and find a moment's peace listening to music commuting home. Now, with your help, I'm learning to make my own noise and not once do I forget to be grateful, especially for what I've learned at TPS.
It's funny trying to condense a question using shorthand one hopes will be understood. But you two "get it", as is often said, so we're all in good hands. On the red light fever question, the more complete picture would have included it's in a 100% solo home studio where mics are placed, guitars tuned and (thank Goodness for pre-count) I hit the record button and turn to play. Or do vocals. The single word, "prepared", resonates most deeply. Another way to put that might be, "Get the engineering job done so the engineer can yield to the musician", rather than operate simultaneously, which must be the essence of my difficulty. Knowing my DAW better so it becomes second nature will help. (to say nothing of programming drum sounds, my nemesis) And Dan's thoughts, which might include losing the self consciousness and getting out of one's way and "If you want to get better at recording, record!" seem spot on as well. Thank you both. It went pretty well. And led to more learning about latency. And more questions... Cheers, guys. You help so many of us out here and I'm ever grateful. -G

I have "cheated" by using two stereo amps mounted over and under and fed by an A/B-Y. One amp is for acoustic guitar and the other for electric. I blend their volumes for balance of tone and clarity. I play a jazzy semi-hollow electric into this setup and it can sound like two different guitars blended and playing perfectly in unison. This works best in low dB settings (around 85dB).

  • @Youtubemademeaddahandle

If the "performer" role is embodied stress is accentuated and the music cannot be "artistic". If the "happy contributor" to the musical experience is embodied the music happens and the artist joins the audience.

When I am playing along and an unfamiliar song is heard (whose lyrics have not yet stolen the arrangement) I simply play what the underlying instrumentation suggests to me. Lyrics and singers come and go while the "song" remains for me to interpret. That initial creative interpretation may never be repeated as the "song" become familiar. Only the songs which are well integrated with the instrumental arrangement are capable of providing the platform for me to re-arrange (sometimes in other styles).

Mick, on the negative feedback thing - I think you've said that you used Rectifiers at one point or another, and the primary difference between Vintage and Modern modes on a Recto is that Modern removes negative feedback. You get all that crazy bass and low-mid WHOOMP, all that extra gain, all that bonkers 10k+ presence, etc. As you say, it's just one design element, but a lot of amps that feel "loose" and "hairy" and "greasy" can attribute that sense partly to low NFB, and likewise with high NFB and amps that feel "tight," "controlled," "focused," and so on. (NFB really comes into its own as a variable at either high preamp gain or high power amp output, whichever the amp is designed for.)

    • @corpse-in-orbit
      @corpse-in-orbit 9 місяців тому

The difference in top end between a black Fender and a Vox is partly a negative feedback thing too - that insane edge-of-chaos crushed-glass effect in a cooking AC15 or AC30, that harmonic waveband up past the place "Fender treble" rises to, is there partly because it's not being tempered or cancelled by negative feedback, as it would be in most amps.

Regarding amplifier voltages vs the voltages coming from the mains, I have a habit of monitoring the heater voltage and make note of where the variac is at 6.3VAC on the heaters. Then bias the amp accordingly. I have a Framus Dragon that is super happy at 117VAC. My 1981 Marshall JCM 800 is happy at 115VAC.

Love you guys, love the show and am so grateful that you guys put this out every week. But I have to say I was a little hurt to have RAP singled out negatively in such a way. We're all entitled to our opinions of course, but just thought that was off-color. I know you didn't mean for it to come out that way, as I'm often thinking, "gee, I wish I could say things as articulately and diplomatically as Mick", (and I'd come up with far worse statements every 20 minutes if I were on your stage!). But, for the record, it has to be said that RAP is one of the greatest of all time, defining the archetypical golden god of rock as well as being able to melt your heart in Band of Joy or singing in tandem with AK. Nobody but Robert could have sung in Zeppelin.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  9 місяців тому

Ah come on. No need to get attached to, or hurt by, an opinion. We all like different stuff, and I’ve just always struggled with English people sounding American. Same with Jagger. It could be entirely projection on my part because those are the sounds and music in my head too (American music) and it’s how I often end up sounding. But it’s a mask; a persona; a fabrication. It’s an act. I like stuff that’s served straight from the centre of the soul - the real person, no filter.
But I totally get that millions of people see it very differently. I wouldn’t be hurt by what they think or feel. Cheers!

I almost feel as though we are interrupting your teatime or your morning coffee. It could just be me and my current temperament; but, if you are not educating us or relaxing us with learned repartee, then time is being wasted - precious time in retrospect.
