Tieflings are great, and they allow for a lot of variety. I've had one who was a "superhero" based on Rey Mysterio and another who was the daughter of a priestess of Auril that then made a pact with a unicorn, constantly stuck between good and evil.
Story time: I wanted to play DnD for years and recently a group of friends and I started a campaign. I was super excited and I made about a half dozen different character concepts and finally settled on one I was happy with and then... After 2 sessions it all fell apart because of various reasons. Alas my search for my DnD itch to be scratched continues but this video has added yet another character concept to my repertoire!
My favourite character to have played in recent times is my tiefling wizard, a private investigator called Carrion. It's been fun perfecting a Northern Irish accent, playing a wizard for the first time (divination school ftw!), and balancing in-world bias against tieflings with the inherent usefulness of a gun-toting, newly-powerful diviner who can solve any mystery given enough spell components. Trench coat, whisky glass, and fedora as standard, naturally. Great video Liv!
I've never been so early. I have an alignment neutral and gender neutral tiefling cleric, they're called Balance ♡ did I make first comment?? Woop whoop. omg yes I'm so glad jester made it onto this list ♡ I love jester SO much 💖 She did so little healing at the start of the campaign that I literally forgot she was a cleric XD Molly was also an amazing character, his arch tho 😍😭🥳 Your character sounds awesome 👌 No Prudence mention? She's the most wholesome tiefling out there , she left her life of isolation, met up with a group of randos, stole 2 book babies and pesky orb, she may be one of the weaker party members but she gives it her all and beware of the full moon coz this beautiful has a secret ;) Can't wait to see more ♡
Jester is awesome because she isn’t the typical cleric. She does so much other cool and useful stuff! I love her character. Tieflings are by far my favourite D&D race.
Something of note that many people don't know, the term Tiefling is older than 4th edition, but it was slightly different in 3.5 and back. We look to Planscape and what are now considered the Planetouched Tieflings, who were generally the same origin wise, or even tainted by the hells directly, but varied in look even wider, some looking almost human but with odd hair colour and tongues (One of these shows up in Baldur's Gate 2), others look more devilish like the tieflings we know, and some look all together different.
For my first character ever, I picked a Tiefling cleric of Pelor. The lore of the tiefling is so interesting and versatile I couldn't resist. My adorable tiefling Felix found refuge from the cruel world when a kind gnome priest saw past his devilish features and took him in. But the wider church hierarchy didn't trust having a tiefling in their ranks, it came down to the head of the church to make the decision and she gave him a challenge to test his devotion. For his adventure to find a lost relic he dawned a white and gold plague doctor outfit to hide his features and try to fit in. (he still got weird looks, but less malice) My DM ended up shocking me when a few sessions in, we delved into homebrew. Felix found the relic that was supposed to be impossible to find but it had been cursed by the drow. Pelor came to him while he was praying over it. Pelor purified the relic with his light but it was so strong it burned away the essence of Asmodeus from Felix's blood and replaced it with Pelor's. Changing Felix from a regular red skinned tiefling, to one of bright gold. Something both he, and his church are still coming to terms with.
Ive been playing a (blind) tiefling paladin of Pelor for the last few years dealing with the dichotomy of tiefling hate (those who made pacts with demons and devils were the first betrayers of Pelor) vs his country's high estimation and praise of anyone who goes into Pelor's service. He never quite knows who is trying to get into his good graces as a paladin while loathing his existence as a tiefling. As a relatively human looking tiefling, he used to keep his horns hidden and has stayed out of the limelight in his country but is gradually coming to embrace his heritage and take no shit from people. It's been an amazing journey.
I have never really gotten on with Tieflings as a race, it always felt like an all or nothing roleplay option... Either you fit the devilish stereotype or fight against it, but it always so clear cut. It was interesting to see some of the 'well known' Tieflings and how they fit on that spectrum of devil-osity. I'd have really loved to hear more about the different types of Tiefling though, more subraces and more stories! Next time, I would love to see how the different types of draconic lineage affect each type of Dragonborn
I have a feral tiefling monk named Whip waiting to be played. People call him Whip because it's the first word he said when he was freed from the circus that took him away from the family of spider monkeys he'd been living with after his parents were killed and...well it gets a little complex after that point. I can't wait to play him, but my current character is just too dang good at living.
I want to multiclass Bard Sorc with the Tiefling sometime... A very slick charmer that relies heavily on spells and plays an air guitar using a cantrip or illusion to create the sound of Silence melody to which he adds his enchanting voice...
Great video - it's cool to get another glimpse into the deep and decades-long D&D lore. I've always had a certain curiosity or fondness for Tieflings because of their back-story as a people, and how it affects their lives. I played a Tiefling druid in my first/only DnD campaign. I didn't know about the sub-races - we were just working from the 5E Player's Handbook, and I was relying on guidance from the experienced players. Add some poor stat rolls, and Rift was a character who felt pretty useless, except for some occasional good results from that charisma bonus. If I somehow find myself in another DnD party, I'll probably play a Tiefling again, though I'll need to learn a lot more lore and gameplay beforehand.
Love this, Liv! My feral Tiefling, Indifference, is a Swarmkeeper Ranger. Her swarm of pipistrelles is led by Batfink (brilliantly named and voiced by our GM) and she recently revealed her badass, angry side. She likes it. So will be multiclassing as a Barbarian ha ha!
i played with a tiefling battlemage wizard in my second ever D&D game her name was Lillith but she went by lilli her virtue name is hope only her closest friends knew her virtue name.
My Tiefling Chant is a 17 year old himbo/nerd wild magic sorcerer who wants to be as famous as Volo one day. He's the face (literally, he's pretty) of the party, as long as you can drag him away from his books, but please don't make him do anything athletic at all. 🤣 (He's currently hiking through the jungles of Chult, it's a race to see what gets him first: zombies, the oppressive heat, or his own magic.)
Nice essay, Liv! Whoever made the decision to hire you for Dicebreaker, give them a big pat on the back. And whilst you're at it, yourself as well. Cause you're great!^^
I enjoyed this, thank you Liv, I've played a Tiefling Eldritch Knight and I am currently playing a Tiefling Warlock with an Efreeti patron, this is my first evil character and I'm having fun.
We're on the final session of CoS with my Glasya Tiefling Bard Kairon. Definitely one of my favourite PC's. Especially in a setting where most NPCs are human, you really have to own that you're different. I'm going to miss pretending that I actually know how to talk to people haha

@@TransGuyShane Very true. Though I have to say, its a lot harder to choose a new character mid-campaign. All the classes I really wanted to try are already in use, and I wanted to try something other than a bard
@That Terence Guy Yeah I can understand that. Though maybe playing a different variant of something that's already being played would be an idea, and as for mid campaign, maybe have your old pc be the reason your new pc gets involved with the party, like they had heard of your old pc and wanted to join to honour them or something. I dm so any pc characters that I don't end up playing become extremely detailed npcs lol. ♡
Tieflings are great; I've been playing one in a Waterdeep campaign. Habard Ashery the Bard/con-man with a… no wait, no redeeming qualities. Based a bit on Mollymauk and has been a lot of fun to play, though I'm swapping it out for another character in that campaign for a while (possibly forever?
