Hats are my passion. Never leave home without one. When people do remark upon them, they usually say how much they like them, but do not have the courage to wear one themselves. The trick is to put it on your head, stand up straight, and purposely stride ahead. This technique works well with any head dress. Be it a trilby, fedora or 14 inch basque beret. A fine video Ash.

My grandfather wore trilby's and when he passed away I inherited his, ive been wearing them basically everyday for the last few years and it's a great joy as it is a hat that fits even informal outfits and just helps me to present and express myself through my style. I have gotten many compliments from people around me and it surprises me since I am 16, that quite many friends and classmates appreciate hats so I definitely agree that the trilby has a place in the modern era of styles.

My mother is Welsh, and she had a great uncle in the Valleys that was an eccentric. He'd announce his presence by throwing his hat through the doorway of the house and he used to say he knew he was welcome if it wasn't thrown back out at him. I always pictured that hat as a trilby in my mind's eye, though it was probably a flat cap

I started wearing a trilby recently made of a stiff straw in three different colors. I wear it with a light patterned t-shirt, straight cut jeans, necklace, and a nice watch. I’ve gotten more compliments on my wardrobe now than any other time in my life. I used to wear baseball caps all the time, and decided to try the trilby. Pretty much going to continue this look from this point on.

I prefer a hat with a wider brim so I wear fedoras mostly and of course my Akubra in high summer. I do have a black Christie's trilby for formal occasions. I guess my current winter headwear is eccentric, I am wearing a Swedish military ski cap, but it is very warm and practical in this weather as it has pull down ear flaps. Nobody ever comments on it, they are too interested in my walking cane with it's deer antlers.

I can see why a trilby would be a good hat for a modestly sized individual, but I prefer a Fedora. I like the larger brim as it keeps the sun out of my eyes, but to each his own! Thank you for posting this!

I've bought hats that look good in the mirror but when I see pictures of myself... not so much. I think the key when hat shopping is to have someone with you whose opinion you can count on, preferably of the opposite sex, with the inducement of a good lunch or dinner afterward.

My favourite hat is my khaki military fedora, similar or probably the same as the troops at Galipoli. It's about 100 yrs old, but still looks and feels great. Sadly, whilst driving with it on around 40 yrs ago, it flew off, got run-over by a lorry, and the original head-ribbon was ruined. Other than that, perfect. Only thing, as an archaeologist, people always bring up the "Indiana Jones" comparison etc. Just like to say, have owned this hat for over 45 yrs, so well before bloody Indiana Jones (he obviously copied me!). My second fave is a 1950's beaver fur trilby which i got online from an antique store in Chicago. This is my go-to standard wear. Toodle pip!

I bit the bullet last year and bought a Trilby - and now I have 2 ! (my first was black but I find it a bit stark & formal - the second one is a vintage German sage green, and I am keeping lookout for a brownish one) The green one has seen a lot of use this winter, once I overcame any self-consciousness. Sadly, where I live I'm more likely to see people in slippers & pyjamas than I am a man wearing a (proper) hat.

Have you ever considered a "hat etiquette" guide? As you probably know there is much more to wearing a hat than just putting it on your head. When to don a hat, to doff a hat, and to tip one. What to do when sporting one in front of a lady you know or just passing a lady in the street. Then there is the possible confusion of what building`s you can wear one in, and what ones where you should remove it. We then need to consider the correct way to remove a hat and how to hold it. All these need to be borne in mind to avoid possible embarrassment. Maybe this is one of the reasons hats have fallen out of favour over the years, and that life has become to hectic to worry about such things.
Personally I prefer a Fedora as a Trilby reminds me of Arthur Daley or Mickey Pearce from Fools and Horses.

Well said, Sir. The Trilby is perfect. Aside from being Bond's titfer of choice, I also associate it with jazz musicians; the Blues Brothers and with the ska scene: Suggs. I regularly wear a trilby for function, as it keeps my head warm and if it should start to drizzle, dry. I would love to see a walking tour of your town, especially the town centre and high street. I own many Tilley hats but they are not dressy. Currently playing with a green wool hat between a Trilby and Fedora as it has a wide brim but rolled up edge what can be put down in the front. Interesting that you have a paper hat; I picked one up from the dollar store but put it aside for a while so it doesn't shought dollar store, but it is rather nice for paper as it looks more like a straw weave.

Just added a beautiful dark gray vintage trilby and it looks identical to pictures of Frank Sinatra in the early 60s (if a bit more rumpled 😂) and while I do actually prefer larger fedoras there is something very pleasant about occasionally having a more understated hat on. The only downside to me is that you sacrifice sun protection because of the narrowness of the brim.

I enjoy wearing both Trilby and Fedora. Not a hard fast rule only what my tendencies are to do I wear Fedora the way Indiana Jones popularized with leather bomber jackets or Denim jackets or sport coats. As a side note I also make use of flat caps in some instances. For dresser looks like full suit or blazers I ware the Trilby. Frank Sinatra certainly made iconic use of trilby's with suits and blazers. Again these are tendencies. I do enjoy mixing it up time to time.

Unfortunately, I live in a small farming village in the middle of Michigan, USA. The only hats seen here are the baseball hats that all farmers wear and the stocking hat for the bitter cold and snow of winter. I am the only person who actually wears a flat cap and that happens when wearing my Barbour Beaufort. Don't know what would happen if I wore a Trilby in such a situation as a village board meeting.

I have to disagree on the woolen cap !
The imagery connected with it, is that of the Commando. I prefer the classic, old school, cap comforter in khaki wool. You wouldn´t want to have a stroll on St.James´ Street in it, sure enough, but for a walk in the woods, daily chores, hunting (when not being part of a hunting party), stylish enough.
