Bowser literally tapes Kammy Koopa into the intro, the Goomba King's tower unfolds into a bridge, the stilt guys fall down and unfold their stilts. In TTYD the bosses pretty much go for a diorama look, I always felt like the world had that look as well. Not to mention Flurry blowing away fake walls(or even a fake plane of reality covering a pipe) or a bridge being created in flip book format. What the modern games do is shove it down your throat and throw weird real world items into the world and won't freaking shut up about it(64 doesn't really overtly talk about it aside from the intro with the aforementioned "Bowser taping Kammy Koopa into the story so he can change it", which makes sense. To them, this is normal, so why should they constantly be talking like "Hey, did you know we're paper?" When that's essentially like someone in real life being like "Hey did you know we are flesh?"), but I feel there was always an element of "this is a magical paper Storybook world"
