I don‘t call myself anything, especially not a „specialist“ or „expert“. I just say that i „do it“. Pentesting and DFIR made me a humble person in a way. There will always be stuff that you have never seen and you don‘t have a clue of until researching.

It's really not that complex:
If you farm regularly, you're a farmer.
If you animate regularly, you're an animator.
If you're "hacking" into things regularly, you're a hacker.
This right here... it is an passionate and unquenchable thirst for knowledge and also the passion for repurposeing things and tools to do things other than what they were meant to do. It's not about money. Not about the ethics, not about the recognition.

A hacker has to be curious, you can't call yourself a hacker and not be curious.
I respect this viewpoint. It reminds me of something I learned from a Buddhist teacher. A lot of unnecessary stress comes from trying to "become" something. For example, if you have the mindset of, "I want to BE a musician", a bunch of questions start to pop up: "What does a musician look like? Do I have the right clothes? The right hair? How many instruments do I need to learn? How many performances do I have to do? What awards do I need?" It becomes a never-ending quest, and a ripe source for imposter syndrome.
If instead you don't worry about your title, and simply say, "I want to write and play music", you'll find it to be much more enjoyable. You aren't trying to "be" something, you're just trying to "do" something. Maybe some people will consider you a "musician", maybe some won't, but it really doesn't matter because you're doing the thing you want to do.

Yeah but for the motivation I think that it's sometimes interesting imagine you as some professional in the future, just like some people dreams about themselves being doctors and that giving tons of motivation for them.
@@viniciusrodrigues2180 yeah I agree, and I don't mean to say that people shouldn't visualize themselves doing something, I'm talking more about the language used and the specific end-goal in mind. Visualizing yourself helping sick people is focusing on the "doing", which is helpful. Thinking "I want to BE a doctor" is focusing on the "being", which is where some of the extra stress might come in, such as worrying about the exact title, the "best" school to get your degree, the "best" type of degree, etc. Not saying those aren't important decisions to make, just that it would be extra stressful/frustrating to make those decisions with the idea of, "then I will officially be a doctor", rather than "then I will be able to help sick people".
Like in the music example, if you want to visualize yourself up on stage, performing to an arena like a rock star, then go for it; that's the thing you know you want to do. But thinking "I want to BE a rockstar" adds on a bunch of other criteria that you might not be so sure of.

I think you give your perspective from your age and generation. I have being a hacker since the 90s, understanding the hacking culture that was born in the 60s. You can not advice people to not call themselves hackers, that is nobody's call. Keep learning, keep trying harder and happy hacking!

I think there's a difference between calling yourself a Hacker (TM), as in the title, and calling yourself a hacker as in part of the hacking community. I think the first one is more about giving yourself some kind of status, something that isn't useful, just like you explained. The latter is more about reclaiming the word "hacker", being proud of the community you're a part of.
I identify with the word "hacker", I feel at home in hacker spaces, it's a mindset and environment I vibe with, but when someone asks me: "So, like you're a legit Hacker?", I won't say yes, because it does feel like something you have to earn if that makes sense..
Or at least it's more that it isn't a badge that you can just obtain. It's not like "now ive done this and this, so now Im a hacker, and I can stop". The whole point is that you never stop learning and never stop being curious.
So it's equally that you have always been a hacker, and that you will never get to be a hacker.

My dad calls me a hacker for fixing the wifi
No matter what I do, I always feel like I don't know enough. Ive been told that I do a good job, and that people love to have me come work on their PC because I am fast (at getting there), reliable, and seem knowledgable. But I always question my skills and just want to keep learning more to keep bettering myself. Even if concept go over my head (right now I am currently going through a online course on networking, the skill I have the least knowlege in), I still work at it to learn and know better, so that when the time comes I can do what needs to be done. Thank you John for all your content, you are an insperation, and I love the way you showcase your skills. Thank you again.
I think the best person to ask about hacker culture, and the title of, is Chris Roberts. I've been proud to be a hacker since the late 80s. It's a mindset. How can I use this thing differently? How can you break this thing? How can you twist and mutate this thing to be bad, and how can you stop that bad? How can you prevent this thing from being twisted? Etc .. HACK THE PLANET baby
very good statement and supper important to "make your own brand" and build your passion for what you do. so many i have seen going for at cert and then ending up not being able to transform what they learned to real situations. i can only imagine the feelings inside of that human.

Love your thinking John, I think that you described the profession, and many others besides the field of cybersec are all just a job that you research constantly and improve on your own skills, because those are the most important. It's just loving something enough to turn it into something that helps yourself, as well as the entire cybersec community, and the world.

It has been a few years since I saw an Ethical Hacker giving us a talk about security and showing us that downloading a known application from the internet can be tampered with causing dire results.
The way he showed it was so cool and me realize: "That's what I want to do". I want to grasp so many concepts so deeply that I can make it work for me. So I started learning everything I could get my hands on. Networking, Bash, Python, Linux, Windows, webdevelopment.
I made a goal that I would be working in a redteam environment in 5 years. It took me 4 and something years and I got my first job in that field.
Am I done?
Fuck no, this is just the first chapter, the rest was just the introduction.
Try harder, work smarter.
The minute you think you are cool, you are not cool anymore. It’s the same with the word hacker.
Really inciteful and thought provoking. I mean I've considered myself a Sys Admin for years and never thought much of it. However some years later you just don't feel like it is that way. You just work through each problem every day, "grinding away" and knowing that you want to make it to the end of the month for that paycheck.
But!! it also involves PASSION, the PASSION for the work is what drives a person to do the work, not the paycheck.

I think this video resonates with me very well and I love this type of content. In Japanese culture, there is a social/cultural concept called: Chinmoku (ちんもく) which means “silence.” As one who was raised in Japanese culture I was taught that this “silence” is commonly thought to indicate thoughtfulness or hesitation in trying to find a good way to communicate smoothly. It can also lead to the concept of humbleness where your actions speak louder than words. Hence in a cybersecurity field of ongoing changes and constant learning I totally agree with everything you said and love your act of being honest and humble. This kind of video reminded me of my values and at the same time motivated to keep grinding in my cybersecurity career. Again my humble thanks.
I'm totally agree with you.I also spent a lot of time in Japan (6 years) and learn the language, worked in Japanese organization, be in contact with people into cybersecurity community in Tokyo.
I also learnt another important thing : 空気読む（くうきよむ）and that literally means 'Read the air' but the real meaning is 'understanding the current situation without using words'.
Everything that I have ever learned from my Japanese experience is really helpful today especially during call/meeting.

So true. It doesn't matter what you call yourself. Only how your actions speak on your behalf. A king does not have to tell their subjects that he is so. He shows it with his actions. The moment you call yourself a title, you are demonstrating that you have failed to show that in your actions. Don't make yourself a hacker. Be a representation of hacking.
"You are what you do repeatedly" - Aristotle, so if you hack into things all the time you are a hacker!
Spot on John. In my opinion (whatever it's worth), a "hacker" is someone who understands how something works, and can make it do something it wasn't 'intended' to do. And this can apply to anything not just tech. When I was younger I learned that tough guys don't have to tell others that they are tough, they just are, and I think that applies equally here.

John, I would actually recommend calling ourselves hacker. Identity shift is definitely for long lasting changes. As someone who was not a hacker, I felt more comfortable when I started to think myself as a hacker. Otherwise I was crippled with self-doubt and impostor syndrome. lol.
There's nothing wrong with calling yourself a maker if you make things, same goes for hacking. Words like these are yours to use as you like to build your identity along with the things you enjoy doing.

I'm in the development world / security for years and years since I was 12 (currently 34).
And being in a "hacker" in the early days it was something really different compared to now......
In the early days you could say "hacking" was/is using a device for something else that it wasn't meant to do.
Like running linux on a playstation could be considered hacking. Or just hacking things together to make something awesome. Doing things on a computer that you are not supposed to do.
Also "hacky" code is a nice example, you fix something but not how you supposed to do it.
Bypassing a security system is a part of "hacking" because then you do something you're not supposed to do. But hacking isn't only security related. You can hack a system so you have more power (as example) than you are supposed to have compared to the defaults / boundaries of that system
So since when did i consider myself a hacker? I don't care..... you are free to do when you want
I hold the same mindset now even though I'm not "hacking" back then. It is more than just security, it is about doing things in a special way, in unintended way, just not the normal way. Heck it is more than IT itself, it is in some way, a mastery of your craft whatever it is. That's why I like and I hold onto that idea and mindset

This is fantastic. It's easy to want to quantify progress with a title, but it's hard to know when sufficient progress has been made when just starting out. Sometimes, we're really focusing too much on the vanity of it all and not the actual learning and purpose. Thanks for this video!
Hacking is a mindset, you could even call it a way of life. When someone calls themself a hacker, they are usually far from being one.
Agreed with the 1st statement, not the 2nd. Ppl are free to call themselves a hacker, it is literally among the simplest way to explain to family and friends who arent familiar with IT.

Curiosity as a job, I'm trying for this job.
According to RMS a hacker is someone with a playful intention that is curious about certain things that interests them who take it future exploring more on the domain as a result Inventing/Discovering unintended consequences.
In my opinion, the term hacker dose not only belong to infosec community, a physicst who is curious about the universe or a chef that discovered a new recipe is also a hacker in their own domain.
It's the mindset, where curiosity drives one.

I do understand your point of view, I dont share it but I understand it quite well and I think our divergence in opinions come from the meaning we put in in the word "hacker" itself.
For me, being a "hacker" is a mindset, not a skillset. In my opinion, being a hacker is this spark of love for tampering in systems, this taste for the activity of taking something, trying to understand how it works and how to modify it.
In a way I do think somebody who can take a clock and modify into a mechanical calculator is a hacker, as I do think people who mod games without mod support are too.
But, in a way, I support your point of view about output based legitimacy. Even at my level of skill (I'm also in the "too much certifications to remember them without missing one" club) I still see myself as some kind of apprentice. I think this is the pitfall in calling yourself a "hacker" or an "expert", or a "specialist" to lose from sight the fact that you will always have more things to learn, and that mastering your trade is a journey without an end.

And that word these days 'hacker', for me this word has the same value as the term 'gamer', whenever I hear it I end up rolling my eyes.

I could imagine the stares I'd get if I referred to myself as a "Techno Wizard". I'd imagine that would make people expect a lot of me, too.
On a side note, if you're ever doing something like a convention where using a joke title would be appropriate, "Hecker" would be great!

Deff a person my mentor was who made me feel like it after the keep doing it phase. Hacker is a mentality. But validation from the community helps.
IDK how it works for the security side, but on the regular programmer side, the title of you past jobs on your resume matters somewhat to what opens up to you and how much you end up getting paid. "Developer" "software engineer" and "software architect" end up being significantly different jobs requiring different amounts of skill and having different amounts of pay. Having a company let you set your own title can let you position yourself better for your next job.
I like the message, it applies to any career path.
Being a hacker means.. taking something which does not work and making it work.. like unpacking an appimage, finding out which library it contains is the wrong one.. putting in the correct one.. packing it up again.. testing it on a real world system... and then uploading the fixed appimage back to github..
What the media use as "hacker" is malicious invasion with intent.. not hacking.
Hacking is not exclusively internet related, like breaking into networks, exploiting vulnerable webapps etc. white/grey/black hat.
Hacking is being curious about how things work (not only software) taking them apart, reverse engineering, and then modifying/repurposing to make the thing act in an unintended way.
You don't even need to use a computer to be a real hacker

I think this parallels on when to call yourself an artist - because in some circles that can be pretentious.
Another problem is the term hacker is so hyped up by movies etc it's more like a super villain then anything grounded.
I personally think when you say researcher and that its poking around and exploring -That is a hacker. They say the term came from MIT with a train that people would 'hack away at' until it worked and it could have taken days and days of poking around and figuring out how it worked. I think it's fine to call yourself a hacker, whenever, so long as you understand the grindy method to the madness and it doesn't have to be with computers. I'm a hacker! =\= I grind until it works.
Being engaged in a field, and an intention of that engagement being a long-term priority... garners the title.
There are tennis players that are 14 years old who can't make it to state, and there are Wimbledon champions.
They are both tennis players. You are allowed to exist somewhere along the spectrum.
There are also many people who just play tennis. Skilled or not, they don't consider themselves tennis players. Its just something they do from time to time.

Yeah, hacker is a mindset. It can be even unrelated to cybersecurity. People who tinker in garage to “upgrade” household items can also be considered as a hackers. Hacking - it’s all about unconventional and efficient problem solving.
As long as u get past the obstacle, ure a hacker. Whether u use scripts or program a full solution, ure a hacker as long as u reach the end goal. Everything else is just a means to an end. Anyone telling u otherwise is a gatekeeper.

Indeed, we should never call ourselves as hackers. It is something that is being acknowledge by others. Even then, we should deny it. The day we accepts and calls ourselves as hackers and gets complacent, it is the day we lag behind and causes us to lose our way.

People that go around calling themselves hackers are most likely script-kiddies working off the backs of real hackers. Real hackers don't call themselves hackers because the misused and stereotypical term it endures. We are tinkerers that like breaking things. We are builders and designers that like creating things. Hacking is a state-of-mind not a title.

I don't like the term hacker and I wouldn't wanna call anyone a hacker, except maybe the old school guys like Mitnick . Not because it has a negative, criminal connotation associated with it, but because of the self declared hackers with their silly masks and hoodies. Everyone who accomplished to hack a wifi network, automatically with scripts and repeating steps from a video or article, nowadays calls himself a hacker. I know some people, John Hammond included, who I would call a hacker a couple of years ago. Nowadays I feel it is a little bit derogative. We need a new term for people that use knowledge instead of step by step instructions from the web.
You speak the truth! I am still early in my grind in the field, but the whole reason I am is to be able to contribute to society. I have dealt with being a victim of data breaches and other cyber attacks in the past, and I wish my data was protected back then. So now I strive to help be the stopping force to help mitigate such breaches.

Thank you John. Just what I was after. I'm a card counter. I keep this to myself, other's around me see it, the Casino's dislike my presence. I only post this because I can relate . I have just started out in the Hacking World. I will now strive to be heard and known in the community. If it doesn't happen, it's OK. I will still deep dive in the subject while being observant, quiet and self aware of who I am keeping this in thought: Am I hacker? a student merely, or a seer?
Just remember that a hacker is a computer scientist, first and foremost. You have to be better at programming than many professionals in order to bypass their securities.

I’ve been told by many people that I don’t need to be a full fledged developer for this field. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Much respects.

Hacking is a mindset, it's about being creative with technology and bending its rules. Hacking isn't something you are, it's something you do. Anyone can do it. It's like asking how many meals do you have to make before you consider yourself a cook. Some people have "cook" as their job title, others are cooks on a more casual basis. But overall, cooking is something you do, and anyone can do it. You don't need a fancy certification to cook a meal, just as you don't need a fancy certification to hack a computer.
In my mind I'm a hacker while I'm hacking, but that's not a permanent status, it lasts just as long as my hacking activity. When I am done I'm no longer a hacker until I start hacking again.

(We agree Hacker is addapted in ComputerScience from the verb because Thats litteraly what a "Hacker" is doing on a computer (find crack modify and finally use the software in a way thay was originaly intended)

I'm not employed as a hacker and I don't see it as my duty to regularly hack so I'm not permanently a hacker but the miner from my example is employed as a miner and it's his duty to work in the mines.
