Thanks for this tutorial. But as an English teacher, can I make one request: never apologize for your accent! Your English is great, and most the trolls who would criticize you for it in the comments section probably only speak one language themselves and haven't put in the hard language work you have. As a Krita and Blender user, I've gotten so much advice and resources from you. You are doing unique tutorials and doing them well, and a lot of people are benefiting from them, so if someone is turned off by your accent, that's their loss. Keep up the great work!

Haha, yeah. To me, it's always like "Yup, you've got an accent; it's pretty strong. But hey, your English is better than my French, so it's not like I'm in any position to criticize you." Heck, I'm jealous that you can speak a second language at all.

don't lose hope though! Remember, there is no "this tall to ride" bar to be an artist like many think, create what you want, what you think makes people happy, and you ARE an artist, you just need to start, you WILL get better with practice. I was so close to giving up and just finding a way to do it all on paper, but I happened across some weird gradient tool and after messing around with it, I decided that there was too much potential to give it all up now, with so much to discover. One simple question but I can't find it: you have Opacity and Flow both in the toolbar, how did you achieve this?

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  8 років тому +100

Hey, It's in menu > Settings > Configure Toolbar . You'll have a dialog, column on left = all available option for your toolbar, and column on right = all your toolbar. You can move an item from left to right to add one to the toolbar. You need the Option Slider1 , Option Slider2 , and Option Slider3 to have 3 sliders. Then , the slider themself can be directly configured in the toolbar ; a little icon 'down arrow' next to them.

Thank you for this really informative tutorial. I have a comic/graphic novel idea that's been struggling to really get going and decided I needed to use a more fine-arts-oriented software than Adobe Illustrator in my attempts. So I discovered Krita recently, downloaded it and tried it to my satisfaction. This video was the first tutorial I watched. I really appreciate that you showed your process. It convinced me that your painterly method really is the way I should go. I tend to be too graphic and technical, and my subject matter needed to become softer and warmer than just vector lines and solid shapes. I have enough skill in fine art sketching to know I can do it more like your way. And Krita just seems like an answer to prayer, so I really admire what you've done and thank you for this inspirational presentation.

Excellent! Fantastic! Awesome! (looking for synonyms ...).
love it! small detail tho, she's holding the ring with her right hand, but throwing it with her left hand....

I can't really say anything bad about this video.
It's a good tutorial, your skills are Amazing and your accent doesn't make it hardest to understand (belive me, I don't speak english either and I got everything you said).

Just… one little tiny bitsy thing… if I may.
    The continuity.
The girl watches all the time the ring she's holding in her *right hand...* but the she trow it away with her *left hand.*
Since the size and the shape of the last 3 boxes are the same, it looks like a sequence, so with no skipped scenes in between.
But she must have passed the ring to the other hand, and that kills the continuity.
(or you just drawn the wrong hand by mistake, I'm not sure wich one is the case)

I enjoy watching your videos to learn, but also rewatch them just because it's satisfying to watch a result form itself or to gain some motivation. Listening to your calm explanations and small tips in between which explain some of your thinking processes really helps a lot! You mentioned mirroring "in order to see the picture not always in the same way" so I tried to do that but also to sometimes look at my drawings upside down when I'm doing traditional. I'm not very good at working with geometric shapes, as a lot of tutorials propose, so I always start with blotched shapes which look like filled contours. To watch you do that helped a lot and combined with some of the tips, such as looking at it from a different angle, I think I understood how important overall shapes are and how some people might get lost if they focus too much on individual geometric parts. Maybe some of us need a different order of steps for a similar result. It's a lot of fun to see there's no "correct way" like in a math formula and that you're free to hesitate and re-think previous ideas. Your videos not only taught me techniques but by rewatching and thinking about your words in relation to what you're doing I figured out a little why some things work for me and some don't. It's very freeing and helps me find my own way too!
(Excusez-moi pour mon français, but I think if you do your best to make this available in English for us c'est normal pour nous d'essayer de répondre en français de temps à temps haha!)

Merci for your interesting words. I totally join your observation about having for each artist to investigate in what works/what doesn't work on a custom level ; because we are all unique and not a single method or workflow works for everyones. Bonne continuation!

Merci David. I am new to this sort of art. I chose Krita as the tool I would like to use because it is free, open-source, and has a lively community, but it is also complicated. Your videos have been immensely helpful: great depth of explanations, lessons learned, examples of how you use each function. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I just came here to say, that I'm hugely glad that youtube proposed me your video. I always had a problem with being a prisoner of my own lineart, which in consequence looked very stiff and not detailed at all. I've tried your block painting technique, and it worked wonders. It added a lot of expression to my drawing and gave me again a great source of fun from drawing.
    Thank you!
