It was a Darwinian choice.
A very Human thing to do, don't you think?
Both the Captain and the Hegemony was given a chance to make the right choice, both choose poorly.

@@ArchonSG1 on the hegemony I agree, but the human captain? That is not the kind of person you send to negotiate* while still at war when you know that there a high chance of them not following protocole and putting other people at risk for their lives, the only reason the result wasn't the complete destruction of the human fleet is due to the hegemony not having the technology to create a bomb with a multi light seconds or minute's worth of range.

Something I've never seen is a rail gun launched missile, it would solve the problem of the target changing direction.
