Excellent informative video. We live a ten minute walk from the city, have a back garden and are growing(sometimes not successfully) a few veggies and herbs, potatoes and carrots are always great. Did try cabbages but all I got was infested with caterpillars 🤷♀️. Bella is very knowledgeable and works so hard, she is a model for the younger ones. X
Such a good video! From Bella discussing the plans with the chickens, to gardening, being self sufficient, sources of food storage. Learning from others, resource info(ie books), or on your own is all good. Not being afraid to make mistakes is also how you learn. Love the bartering you do, not only to help you, but help others. Thank you for this video, and especially the time it took. This will help with my future!
My grandma had 10 kids starting during the war (1943, firstborn) up to a decade later. My mom grew up in a family with a smaller house and a big garden, and they had the same "principles" when growing up. Being resourceful is the best thing she has learned growing up. My dad is an only child, sent to boarding school as they had a grocery store at home, and boy does it ever show that he had no siblings! My mom can make stuff out of nothing (we have a shed full of supplies and things that we possibly could use and repurpose). My dad would throw money at everything (not that he does, mind you, but it's his mindset). My mom did her absolute best during 50+ years of marriage to slowly turn him around, but the man is stubborn! LOL I absolutely, dearly, love your family and how you tackle life.
A really good goat book is put out by the Heifer Project in Conway, Arkansas. I raised Nubians for about 55 yrs. and had an extensive goat book library. Invariably, I used the info from that book. I really like dairy animals. Nubians are my all time favorite. If my hands weren't so arthritic I would still be milking.
Thank you for all the information! 😊 We are in the process of renovating an old house in Tenerife (Canary Islands) and create a large vegetable garden. We have 2000 m². So it's not big, but there are a lot of old fruit trees. You are very inspiring!
Julie, I absolutely agree with what you said about people being afraid of doing something poorly. People have asked me how I know how to do things. I tell them I'm not afraid to try and mess up. This was a great video. A funny thing I thought of while watching this, I will sit through Temu ads for y'all! Lol! God bless your family. Thanks for sharing with us.
This was a great video, learning from others is how we learn.Knowledge is key and you both have it, I hope someday we get a book written by both of you.
I’ve been watching since you had James. This is by far one of the best videos you have done!! Thank you for summing everything up. We were tired o the Cornish Cross so we have gone to American Bresse!!
You guys are all very healthy. If one needs a hospital for an operation is there one nearby. If you need a dentist is there one nearby. You have a wide range of good foods growing there. Super vlog julie and Jason. Bella certainly knows her farm animals . Take care all.
Thanks for sharing this video. Lots of great information. I agree community sustainability is better than self sustainability. Bartering is great as it's a win/win for both parties.
Great video. I hope your channel will grow so Jason can stop his job outside the homestead and he can also show more of his skills and tips too. And get more jobs done on your to do list lol.
great video! Thank you. Love seeing all you're doing. We rent a small place right not and we're not allowed to dig a garden or anything, but I've been trying to buy from local farms and freezing extra. I haven't learned to can yet, but it's on my to do list for the future :) I do only use raw dairy, I make all our sourdough bread and baked goods. We eat about 85 percent from scratch :)
You could grow a small amount of food in pots. There are so many plants that will happily grow in pots. Choose a few things you love to eat or that are more expensive to buy.
Awesome video and so many great tips! Yay for diesel Fords :) Love all the book recommendations, one can never have enough books! We currently live in our camper so we made a library in our little storage trailer. We continually revaluate how we can become more self sufficient and are always making changes. It can become overwhelming but its just one change after another!
You are a great family raising a great family. Our family hasn't eaten meat in years and we never miss it! If you had a child that wouldn't eat meat or was upset by the things at your farm what would you do? A friend of ours married a Mennonite farmer that had a dairy farm. She was a strict vegan. She was so attached to the cows she helped milk everyday! She said her father-in-law would read the Bible to her and assure her that it was a Godly thing but she said took her kids out for the day when they took the dry cows for slaughter! My sister said that my Grandmother butchered a nasty rooster in front of us and that I screamed for hours and made myself sick. She said she was also sick and my mother and her had a huge fight and we never went back to the farm again. My grandfather used to hate butchering. He would take the chicken and stroke it and pray for forgiveness for what he was about to do! My grandmother would grab the chicken screaming and thrashing and chop it's head off! The best or worst was when my uncle got her mad she served his pet rabbits for dinner! I think that anyone that eats meat should thank the animal that they are eating for giving their life to feed them! It's the least they could do! Remember people in other countries eat dogs! Would you eat your dogs?
We’ve never forced our kids to be part of butchering animals, and if they choose not to eat them that’s fine with me. However, you might want to listen to this podcast. It was really eye-opening for me from a health perspective. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/peak-human-unbiased-nutrition-info-for-optimum-health/id1393265937?i=1000435205533
Living Tradition Homestead (also UA-camrs) switched from Cornish Cross to American Bress in a process of becoming more self sustainable with their meat chickens
Cornish cross hens do lay eggs. We let some live long enough and they did give us eggs. Even the male did breed with them. We did get fertile eggs BUT for some reason they would only incubate to a certain time and then stop. Stinks because we really wanted to be able to incubate and start raising our own.
I LOVE hearing from your oldest, she is so knowledgeable! I love it! Dr. Aviva Romm's book Healthy Babies and Children is awesome. Great herbal remedies for common childhood issues. Also, the book Herbal Antibiotics and Herbal Antivirals
You said to list some book titles in the comments, but even better, I have a box heading to your PO Box with some good ones. Tracking has an estimated delivery for Monday, July 3rd. ❤ 📬 🤗 📚
Thank you for the useful information. I just started the homesteading journey almost 2 years ago, so I am definitely still learning. 2 herbal medicine books that I have found very useful are Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine by Andrew Chevallier and Rosemary Gladstar's A Beginner's Guide to Medicinal Herbs
This was very interesting! One thing I’m confused about is how can you have an above ground well? I know the well pump can be above ground or underground, but I have no idea how you can have the actual well above ground when the water has to come from the ground.
We like the idea of solar and have seriously considered using it on our farm. Lots of different ways to go about it and we’ve done a little researching but could do more
Is it possible to start to get to this kind of thing when my husband only thinks of the here and now? (He is always working and doesn't take the time to do things at home) My desire is for stuff like you do. We have 20 acres, but we just finished our 1st year here. I'm really struggling as a wife right now as we just really aren't on the same page in this area. I can't do it all alone either!
Of course! Think about how much money you save, how much security you have that you don’t have to rely on other people to grow your food for you. Especially when the food shortage happens again, you learn so many skills that people have lost, and you get off the phone :)
I understand not going to the dr every time kids are sick but you don’t do well checkups? Those are important for kids. And broken bones and wounds I would think might need a dr at times. What about the dentist eye dr?
Yes. We go to urgent care if there are any broken bones. It’s only happened twice though! Pretty good record for 16 years of parenting very active kids 😆 We see a chiropractor monthly. He is able to do any testing if it would be needed. We have a family dentist that we go to as needed. And Costco has an eye doctor in store. So far the kids all have perfect vision, so it’s mostly for me! I wear contacts so I periodically have to get those renewed
Why do you vaccinate? When you eat that animal that's fully vaccinated then you yourselves are also eating that vaccine. We never vaccinate our chickens and they thrive wonderfully and we know we are still able to eat clean. My neighbor rasies goats, chickens and a beef cow and she's never vaccinated any of her animals and they are all happy, healthy and thriving. I am very cautious on what they are pumping into the animals because i really don't want that in me and my family.
I love the herb talk! The very important book (s) that I have found to be very useful is Anthony William’s Medical Medium (he works for God- so no worries). His books he provides for free at every library to put on hold (there might be a wait time as these books are on hold by many). His “LIFE CHANGING FOODS” book is pure amazing! He also has “LIVER RESCUE” book, “THYROID HEALING” and his new book “BRAIN SAVER” he has amazing podcast and his blog is amazing! I searched for many many years for answers , and his connected all the dots for me. I was well seasoned in many many books of natural healing, and I am purely amazed by his. I thank God for his books. Thank you for sharing all that you are doing to be sustainable. Your garden is thriving! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼✨🙏🏼⭐️🤍
By far, this has been the most comprehensive and helpful video that you guys have put together for the general public. Good job! 👏🏻
Thanks dad! 😀
Your daughter is very smart, homeschooling at its best
Great video!! Bella is an amazing speaker and looks just like you Julie. ❤❤keep up the great work and blessings to all ❤🙏❤🙏❤ Laura Chambers
Fantastic information. The knowledge that Bella has is quite impressive. Loving your channel.
My grandparents warmed their house using wood from the outside and it came into the house. I remember!
Goals!! 🙌🏻 I love seeing how involved your kids are in the process. Bella is so knowledgeable! 😊
I’ve actually learned a lot from Bella 😄 It’s so rewarding seeing your kids grow in knowledge about their passions. I just love it!

Thanks for all the great tips. I just canned 12 pints of strawberries 🍓. Have a good week.
Yum! We did that too
