  • Introduction:
This introduction to Noh features excerpts from a performance by members of the Kongō School of Noh of the Warrior Noh “Tsunemasa” along with interviews with the actors as they prepare for, and then perform, it.
“Tsunemasa” is based on episodes from the “Tale of the Heike,” the chronicle of the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans at the end of the 12th century. The young Taira warrior Tsunemasa, was known for his love of his biwa, an instrument similar to a lute, called “Seizan,” or Blue Mountains. Before going into battle he left the biwa at the temple, Ninnaji, where he was once a page.
After his death at the decisive battle heralding the defeat of his clan, his spirit returns to Ninnaji when a memorial service is held there. Dressed in warrior’s garb, the spirit first remembers his biwa Seizan, fondly. Even as he is enjoying thoughts of the biwa in the moonlight and the sound of the wind blowing through the pines, he is filled with regret knowing those times are past.
He is reminded of the fierce emotions of the battlefield, and is drawn to the hell of the Ashura, or warring titans. Tormented by the pain he feels, ashamed to be seen. He causes the flame of the candle at the temple to blow out, his spirit disappearing in the darkness.
