Inspirational. Thankyou. Since you ask, my latest fave flute is trash, literally. Learning music in school almost ruined it for me, but in my thirties I saw an ad for bamboo flutes and bought myself one for my birthday because I'd been good. More likely to play it when I'd been drinking and smoking, I felt bad. Disrespected flute. So I made one out of PVC electrical conduit and loved it. Them. Made heaps and gave them away. There's video, Watertank PVC Shakuhachi. Excellent resonance. Favourite flute ever, until I was blowing some notes on a beer. Gently coaxing resonance, with over an octave to play with. It's quite a head buzz. Bozz. Visiting friends I pick a Tooheys New stubbie out of the trash, give it a splash, rinse and water to the shoulders and it's all Picnic at Hanging Rock and Baker Street, or Nothing In Particular. So yay trash flute and I'm experimenting. I know there's more music in there somewhere.
Thank you for your several videos on the different types of kaval and this mix of craft plus philosophy. The overtone sounds are fascinating and mesmerizing. I have a few favorite instruments: alto voice, the end-blown kaval, various bagpipes, especially the Irish uilleann pipes and Bulgarian gaida, the cornetto, and the Indian bansuri. Difficult question really with such great sounds from the French horn, the chamber organ, the ney, various lutes (theorbo and kora) and more. The accessibility of world music on the web has been wonderful! My definition of art is "magic". If I see it or hear it, like in your videos, then that sense of wonderment from childhood comes back. Thanks again.
I am fighting a usually fatal illness and have been for more than a decade. Music lifts me up and gives me energy. My fave element of music is harmonies...I am a woodwind player - although I am really too short of breath to play much. I have one of the first Yamaha WX7s sold in Canada more than thirty years ago. I also played a custom Gemeinhardt flute for many years until one of my daughters inherited it. She has learned to play it far better than I ever did. I very much enjoy peeking in on your world. Thank you...
Very welcome :-) take care
The sound and music for me is my life didgeridoo player for living!!! Awesomme job you have!!!
Hi Winnie. Always love to come back to these videos of you living life here. Hope all is well and safe again your one of my biggest inspirations for me
Winne thanks for the question! I am really grateful for this question, because it seemed to me that no one was interested in what sounds impress me. Since childhood, I have been watching my impressions and came to the conclusion that the most inspiring thing for me is to see how the wind sways leaves or grass. Its sight and sound bring me to a state that I call "quiet joy". I don't need the singing of birds, nor the sound of a mountain river or the sea. In the sound of the foliage, I am happy and filled with warmth, from which I do not want to leave. Flutes with hissing overtones create similar impressions for me. And I thank you not only for the question, but also for your creativity - the creation of flutes. I'm hugging you tight! I wish you health and creative inspiration!
It's great to see you in your éléments... Sound is for me a vibration not only capable of bringing émotion but also heal by releasing tensions and blocage. Flûtes sounds like flow of waters cleansing and purifying mind, heart and soul .
Thank you !
I laughed so hard when you were trying to talk to yourself and having the sheep look at you. Too funny :) thanks for sharing Winnie.
hah my pleasure! :-)
Me too!
lol
Nice video. The final sound of your friend playing Ethiopian flute is perfect. You're really talented at what you do. Came about your channel wondering how to make one for myself, I admit I'm a bit overwhelmed by the gears involved in making one but still a great experience.
thank you for your videos, love your philosophy and the work you are doing with wood ! i was searching on the internet how to make an easy pentatonic flute because a don't know how to play but i like the intuitive melancholic and dreamy melody of bansuri or shakuachi or duduk and here a found you ! i will check your website !
Great new one Winne, love your workshop, no wonder you at peace in there and thanks for introducing us to black flower, they are brilliant. listening to them now
hah welcome!
the buzz of the didgeridoo combined with the circular breath is something out of this world
Yes o can related to what ypu are saying. Music and sound are one of the amazing gifts of life. I keep bees and feel a inner warmth when i hear their sound.
:)
"Bees... bees? Bees."
Made me smile :)
I'm really enjoying this vlog series - it's wonderful to see how you work, and I enjoy the quiet good humour.
Thanks!
My consoling natural sound is strong winds through big trees, whooshing with strong gusts. As a child, I had a favourite tree I'd climb to be surrounded, immersed in the rich hissing and rushing of the leaves and branches. Even as an adult, I need this, though nowadays I climb onto my bike when there's a wind warning and ride along forested roads. Your beautiful flute playing also hits a special place in my heart. :)
thanks :-)
Wauw Winne. Ik heb je net ontdekt en ben nu al megafan! Prachtig hoe je met veel liefde voor de ruwe materialen, je instrumenten maakt en ze vervolgens afwerkt alsook de manier waarop je de instrumenten bespeelt. Prachtig!!! Echt top!!!!
Merci! :-)
Very nice video. keep it going. It is funny and very informative. My surprise when I saw the sax player of the band Black flower. I discovered this band just recently and I wish I could see them last time they played here in Poland. Thanks
Thanks! Hah yes he is Belgian, Great band! Small world- Cheers!
Winne, I have become fascinated with making fipple flutes ever since I found your channel. I have made several out of PVC pipe to get started, but now I have moved on to drilling into thick branches. Do you need to season the wood after drilling the bore?
Your channel has been an invaluable learning tool, and a goal to shoot for! Thank you.
My favourite blogger
I started to seriously get invoved with an instrument 3 years ago, and it literally changed my world! Ive been travelling alot and when I was able to play the flute I had a BIG realisation, I could suddenly communicate with people from all around, in an different level! Sometimes ive met people who i didnt share any language with but we could have converations throu music!..thats one of the ways music changed my life ... :) how did you learn how to make flutes? :) much love from norway
I learned by experiment and stubborn- ness ;-) have fun!
Awesome video! I have been spending too much time on PVC trying to get Fujara fipples to please me. They struggle on the highest octaves. Do you share any information on overtone fipple designs?
try to make your work as clean as possible, and experiment it should improve then- have fun!
I'm probably late, but what tuning does this flute have?
Winne, hello, I m looking for knowledge. I started to make flutes about 3 years ago, started from NAF. Are you making online courses?
Geweldig vlog! Hou het gewoon lekker chaotisch, het hoeft niet zo gepolijst allemaal. Polijsten bewaar je maar voor de fluiten, haha! Die schapen zijn ook hilarisch. Wat heb je een mooie werkplaats zo!
Bedankt!
Do you use that horizontal clamping jig when the branches are still wet or dry? I presume it holds the branch so you can bore each one out.
At 1:03 I saw it in use. Okay
Winne, je fimpjes is puur genieten man! Vraagje : hoe buig je de 'takken' recht? Denk dat ik de constructie zag in deze video... Groetjes uit Erpe-mere
Thank you from Ethiopia 👍
Yes! Certain songs and musical instruments like the didgeridoo or folk styles of music transport me. I always come back to a song called La Petenera. The instruments in the song capure life at sea, the dangers, the adventures, the feeling of freedom. It's worth a listen. La Petenera son Huasteco. Awesome chanel bro!
Thanks man :-)
Thank you very much
my pleasure!
Obrigado!
Nice to see your workshop :)
I also have a wood burner in mine, only you have much more space than me ;)
I would really like to come down your way some time to see you.
always welcome :-)
Thank you for the beautiful content Winne!
I have a question as a flute maker.I can’t find any information how to construct and tune ethiopian flute!
I see it’s rim blown as kaval and ney but what is the tuning?
I am sure you are very busy but if you have a minute to answer me,I will share this information and probably flutes with more people!
You are great inspiration!
I get questions like this a lot, so I just made a patreon account where people can support me to make more tutorials and other content! I could make a video about how to make one ! A small effort you won't notice can make a big difference for me! Cheers! www.patreon.com/mesmerizingsounds
Thank you so much for your answer! I will investigate now how this patreon works 🙏🏽
does flutes and fujaras have to be round cylinders? Can they be made like long thin boxes from thin flat planks?
When you said about spacing out with sound, you reminded me of one time when I was on a break time at a job on a building site. It was around the same time I heard elvin Jones playing his drums in London early 80's. Someone was cleaning a cement mixer with a couple old bricks and some gravel swishing around inside the barrel. There must have been a dent or something in the barrel, because every time it turned there was an exact regular "clunk" like a metronome BUT the bricks and gravel were doing an infinite endless improvisation, each revolution of the drum created an entirely new and original composition.I was awestruck, I had never even considered that music was any thing other than tunes played by instruments. Even the bible says make a joyful SOUND unto the Lord, not a joyful tune.
PS Checkout this Punjab well drillers video, checkout the "drum groove" that starts around 7:48, same sort of thing I heard back in Peckham, just as musical as any other proper instrument
The sound of a Native American-style flute. I am a flute maker and player. The sound of the flute is a short cut to my serenity.
Thanks for your answer :-) yes that a warm soulfull sound indeed, a bit buzzy/crispy as well with some makers ;-)
Where can I buy your Ethiopian Flute? How can I buy your Ethiopian Flute?
How did you get in to making Ethiopian Flute?

I have a washint that I just picked up but can't figure out how to get a tone. I'm sure my technique is wrong. I need guidance!! Please help!
my pleasure! I am working on new concent, I could make a video tutorial on the technique. If you want you can help me by support new video making here! www.patreon.com/mesmerizingsounds Feel free! cheers
I love your vlog & facebook page. Through you, I discovered lots of unusual but gorgeous instruments. My advice to you, when someone visits, don’t tell them that you’re recording. Instead, ask them after (before they leave) if they agree to use the recoding with them in it.
P. S. I’m a digital graphic designer focused on user experience but when I see what you’re doing, your workshop and so forth, I admit, I’m a bit jelous :))
I prefer telling people before :-) Im sure some people want what you do too, it's the nature of a human no ;-) ?
Great vlog, really enjoyed it. Would love to see more of that, even though it may be awkward for you to shoot these. I would find it strange to talk to a camera alone in a room / nature, so you just have to get used to that.
It is very strange and awkward talking to a stupid plastic thing but im already getting used to it :-) more upcoming!
Hey, dude can you make Ethiopian Washint with PVC? make a video about it thanks
Hi, good idea, I might do that - cheers
kaval is so good
I still can't figure out how to play the cheap little washint that was given too me
yes the embouchure is not easy to learn, but don't give up!
Where are you from?
Belgium
Zalig om te volgen, idd het vraagt veel tijd om te filmen en ook je werk te doen ;)
Hah merci! ja maar went al een beetje- klein beetje
