    Daria is a legendary sitcom because it did a very good job focusing on tough subjects but through the character’s perspective. What I love about the show is that Daria is very smart and has a gift for relying on logic and reasoning to understand what’s right and what’s wrong. Watching her blossom from a shy, pessimistic girl into a bright, intelligent woman is what made this show so great.

Which ignores the immense difficulty of escaping intergenerational cycles or poverty or disfunction, even for individuals that possess a strong work ethic. The one which opposes the government interfering with the market even when a dollar earned by a worker today when buying a house (50k median income, 500k median house) is worth 0.25 cents when compared to a dollar in 1970 (10k median income, 25k median house). Young people are more than twice as disadvantaged in home ownership as a woman in the 1970s (0.65 cents vs 1 dollar), yet only one party moans and cries when people bring up the government intervening in the housing market, legislating against the gig economy that prevents employees being legally treated as such, or raising the minimum working wage. Instead they say it's the fault of our apparent mass shortage of bootstraps, so they have no responsibility to offer aid and , indeed, believe it moral to oppose any attempts anyone else tries to make on the issue.

    Daria avoiding consequences for her attitude problem is probably her persistence and insistence on using monotone, from personal experience, especially in highschool, it's quite effective at pushing people away in a hasty manner, though attitude and snarky comments can often have the reverse effect and cause people to hang around longer, language is funny like that I suppose.

    • @ShadyDoorags
      @ShadyDoorags  3 місяці тому +30

      There's an episode where Daria takes lessons from Brittany on how to sound enthusiastic so she can read to the elderly, but Daria fails at it hard. She's not doing the monotone on purpose, she just lacks the skill to sound interested in what she's talking about, something that most people can do naturally.

    Personally, I always saw Tom as the more “social” version of Daria (with Jane being a middle ground between the two of that front). He’s just as clever as Daria and Jane, but also has a tendency towards charisma to others and rarely is antagonistic towards others/those of different mindsets/tendencies unless intentionally provoked (as opposed to unintentionally with a lot of other characters). As a hot button character as he is to the fandom, I’m firmly in the “pro-Tom” camp and felt that he added a bit of balance to the dynamic of the core characters that was starting to feel needed, without being so different that he just felt less like a core character than an important side character like say Brittany or even Quinn.

      I don't oppose the idea of Tom but in execution he did come across as super bland and lacking in a certain humor compared with the girls. That Fidget Trent did that you mentioned, I wonder if it's not so much being alone with Daria as just not being around one of his veteran homies because in one of the movies, when Jane was talking about going to college, Trent seemed upset, and later said it was because "you would be there... and I would be here". Sure, it's not like he's with Jane all the time he's out in public, but the times he isn't with Jane he's usually with his friend, so when he's with neither I think his difficulties in functioning come through more.

    Yeah this is when you really see the great character work kick in.
    The Daria/Trent interactions are excellent to have in the show, precisely because they're all at close enough ages that attraction isn't unexpected, and it ultimately shows them handling it in appropriate ways that fit the characters. Trent outright saying "if you were older" is a good healthy boundary to communicate. "I like you, but it wouldn't be right" is good to see... instead of "people 4 years older should never interact with minors ever at all" crap you see. It's GOOD for people of varying ages to end up social, and it's good to learn how to set healthy boundaries and spot what is and isn't appropriate.

    Can't wait for you to cover the season 4 finale. That was definitely the ultimate, and arguably, final test of Daria and Jane's friendship. And I can't help but love the scene where Daria confesses to Jane about kissing Tom, it felt so natural and well done, other shows would try to overdramatize the reaction to confessions like that... but Jane's reaction looked and felt natural: she becomes completely shocked, and in disbelief asks: "What?!!" But doesn't raise her voice or yell, combined with the look on her face until she turns and runs away.

    mental health professional here: to take it one step further, this episode is one where daria starts to have a bit of an ego death. she is confronted with the reality that jane is an independent being inherently separate from herself, and that makes jane capable of making decisions for herself that don’t center daria and can be possibly hurtful (such as ditching daria at a concert to go hang out with a boy). daria becomes passive aggressive with tom and jane out of fear of being abandoned and hurt, she’s unable to reckon with the fact that she doesn’t have inherent control over jane as an autonomous being. through talking with tom, daria is able to accept his reassurance and ground herself back in trust for her friend. however, with trent, she’s also able to realize that he is someone incapable of honoring the kind of commitment she needs in a close relationship, and because she cannot control that she realizes exploring a romantic connection with him is not sustainable. i think this was a great episode where daria is actually able to learn how to accept the world as it is (rather than continuing to hold contempt towards it, which stifles her capacity to connect with others).

    I kind of want to add something here. I was Daria's age when Daria came out, watched it as it aired, and was told by more than one person that I basically *was* Daria. In a really weird way, I still kind of am.
    Everything you said about this, about Daria, her responses, how she feels about Jane and how painful it is when you think you might have to make a new friend because the one you have maybe just won't care about you anymore.. it all hits like a truck, especially if, when you get down to brass tacks, you aren't even sure how you managed *this* friendship. Maybe you've never known what to make of it or how long it can last considering how insufferable you know you can be... but some of that insufferable attitude is really only to compensate for the self-fulfilling prophecy that this person *will* get tired of you. It was a tough episode, and I remember at the time that I was frustrated for everyone involved.
    At the same time, I was in high school in the late 90's. The idea of letting my also-underage friend leave a club with a stranger in a shitty car was almost *viscerally* terrifying to me, no matter what her brother thought or how cool Jane was. It was a lot to grapple with while watching this as it aired, because on one hand, yes, Daria was being shitty and it's her defense-mechanism calling card, but on the other she had a *real* legitimate concern about Jane just up and getting in the car with someone neither of them knew anything about. Getting in touch with someone if your date goes bad is hard; it was a *lot* harder then.
    So on one hand, yes, everything about Daria definitely stands. On the other hand, I could not figure out why the concern of Jane's actual, literal, physical safety was so casually brushed off by everyone they knew, and it distracted a bit from "this is clearly Daria's problem" by adding in a touch of "why on earth does it feel right now like no one else gives a shit about Jane."

    "I speak introvert, and I know what that phrase actually means." Spoken like a true expert there.
    Good review! I'm actually kind of a Tom fan and it was pretty refreshing to see him stand up to Daria. As fans, we tend to see ourselves in Daria to one degree or another, which makes it easy to forget how unpleasant she can actually be at times. It's to the show's credit that they address this, especially in the later seasons.
    You also bring up a good point early on when you mention how Daria doesn't like change. It's not something I see commented on very much, but it's pretty apparent. While she might not like her world, she's relatively comfortable in it and is often content to coast along. Jane, on the other hand, is much more willing to upset the status quo and try new things. Might also be because Jane doesn't have as cushy a home life as Daria does, so she has more reason to try and break out of it.
    I also never noticed how Tom sneaks up on people. It's a little eerie.

    • @ShadyDoorags
      @ShadyDoorags  4 місяці тому +14

      Not sure what you mean by "cushy home". Jane's house is a similar size to Daria's. Her parents are very successful in their craft to the point that they take many spontaneous vacations. Jane's parents also give their kids nearly unlimited freedom even in adulthood, hence why Trent still lives with them.

    There's an important part of Daria's frustration you leave out - imagine you're trying to coordinate a school assignment with your friend and she leaves in the middle of it to go off with some guy she just met. Imagine you're hanging out with your friend and she just invites this guy you don't know to sit with you without even checking with you first. It's uncomfortable and annoying. Maybe you wanted to spend time with your friend and not have to deal with feeling like the third wheel to her new boyfriend, but she didn't give you the chance. Daria shouldn't have been so hostile to Tom, but it's gross that neither Tom nor Jane ever seemed to consider maybe Daria just didn't want to hang out with Tom.

    • @ShadyDoorags
      @ShadyDoorags  4 місяці тому +11

      Tom did consider it. When he visits Jane at her house, he tells her that since Daria is already there he's going to leave, but Jane insists he comes in. And at the pizzaria, Tom was only stopping by to say hi. Jane invites him to hang out, but he declines, saying he's planning on leaving soon. Jane certainly overlooks Daria's potential feelings, but Tom is almost always considerate.

    Like quite a few others here, I graduated high school in 2001, and saw Daria’s Season 4 finale as it first aired.
    The funny thing is how I got into the show: much like Daria and Jane, my parents moved us from Silicon Valley to the Pacific Northwest in the early 90s, as part of that first California Exodus after the ‘89 San Francisco Quake, the ongoing droughts, and the rising housing costs leading the booming 80s tech sector to relocate north, where Intel, Microsoft, and HP already had a foothold.
    We met the next door neighbor kids, and like Daria and Jane, became inseparable for years. So much so, when my father and I got into dirt bikes, the neighbors followed suit. When my dad cashed in stock options to get a speedboat, the neighbors followed suit.
    We spent summer vacations on the island chains on the river together, weekends blasting up and down sand dunes on bikes, and went to the annual car shows and air shows together.
    It was the neighbors who got my sisters and I into Daria, which became our “Sick Sad World” we’d watch religiously as our childhood came to an end.

    I think Tom would have had more benefit if he had been introduced earlier in the show (say the beginning or even the middle of Season 3) and that the audience got to know him better. He gets a lot of unnecessary hate in the fandom because they think he ruined two top ships (Daria/Trent and Daria/Jane) but his biggest problem was not being able to admit the truth to Jane about his feelings about both their relationship and towards Daria. It’s “easier” for Tom to get all the blame and conveniently forget about Jane and Daria also being at fault.

    Your commentary about deadlines (specifically referring to youtube) really hit home for me. I've been trying to do youtube for about 7 years, and i have periods where i can produce content rather quickly sometimes with multiple videos in a week (though admittedly i could learn a thing or two about summarization and editing because.......well let's just say it's a weak point); but there are also times where i feel completely at a loss and what i would normally be recording for content sake i end up "not" doing that because i just need to do it for the fun of it.
    It's impressive to me when some creators like yourself hit their stride and just make it work, and honestly I'm always happy for those types because they prove that this media has a lot of viable formats. Personally I guess i've not found that groove just yet (probably because my brain wants to try a little of everything), but even so I've stuck it out almost like a hobby rather than profession since it gives me an outlet to not only express myself but try to entertain others by showing myself doing what I enjoy. Again though the editing thing bites me in the backside because most of the time my stuff is WAY too long... in part because i've not quite hit that balance of "early credits" and "post credits".
    Truthfully it's very fitting that it's a Daria review that brought this topic up. When i was younger I didn't quite "get" some of the conversations of the series but I watched it on occasion and somewhat related to Daria thanks to her being somewhat a loner. Looking back I see way more to her than i did previously... that also means i see some of my own shortcomings but perhaps that's a good thing. It was worth the wait to see you cover a Daria related review since it gave so much to analyze and discuss (and yes I know you did one before but i forgot to watch it when it came out due to an influx of other content that made my brain go "ooh shiny"). Great job Shady, not just on this review but all of the ones i've seen of yours so far; you really bring a fresh self-analytical perspective to the content as both a professional and as a fan that I greatly appreciate & dare say admire.

Her receiving pushback is an important point, though earlier episodes set up who she is and what she believes, and that usually ended up with her being more intelligent than most others.

    Eeehhhh gotta say it jane was not a great friend here she just kept ditching daria for tom especially when they had a deadline for a school project that daria was perfectly fine doing by herself

      nah, Daria was overly clingy and dependent and then got toxic when Jane began to include any other priority in her life

    Ive always loved this show, I was once persuaded to buy a pirated version of the whole series that apparently was recorded with the original music, before their licensing expired. Aaah memories lol. Thank you for the video!!

    Daria wiki actually does list the places Mystik Spiral plays and this one appears to be a place called The Zon. Which had me chuckling when I saw it

    I was in a high school multimedia/journalism class in 1992; we had video editing software available, most of it by companies that are long gone.

    I love that the shark theme at 15:28 basically highlighted the envitable flux that occurs in Dye! Dye! My Darling
