I'm 14 and dancing to this song with the first boy I ever loved. Will never forget him or the song. The year: 1963. Where would we be without our memories! Thanks for this one.
That is NOT lip- synced. I have heard this song a billion times and I can hear a lot of differences in the vocals all throughout the song. Gene was THE MAN.
I was 15 when this came out and already a big fan. He had one of the best voices at that time and some really good songs - this one being my favorite of his.
Thank you all who have seen the video and wrote comments! Indeed, Gene is a great singer of all times. This video is original and if it appears as out of synchronization, it is because of the velocity of the Internet connection you have. Now, I have the original video and when I watch it at full velocity, I can enjoy the real talent and voice that Mr. Pitney had. Bye
Thanks for posting this. It' rare to see Gene live and so young. I used to know his album It Hurts to Be in Love, with I'm Gonna Be Strong when I was 15, and still listen to same album at 64. . Amazing man.
His voice is so unique. I love listening to this song as he gets older as it changes as his voice does. What a legacy he has left at least for us baby boomers,
Even today after all these years I find myself singing this song out of the blue. It is a very haunting song by Mr Pitney. It has stayed with me all these years. Loved it then, I love it now.
Not only is it a great song, sung by a great singer/songwriter, but it is also the theme to one of the best German movies of the 60s, which hit here in the USA in October, 1961.
If you lived in the time that this song was popular, there is no way you weren't effected by this song. It was a movie about young love, rape and prejudice and also discrimination. This song puts it right there and tugs at your heart strings. Great song; great singer.
One of my favorite songs of the sixties. I liked it very much as Gene Pitney's voice is very good and he sings with feeling and depth this song making one feel the tragedy he mentions in it. He is one of those singers that can paint a picture for one to see with the songs he sings. Very good.
I fell in love with this song when I was little when watching look who's talking and Kristy allen was dancing to this song in the kitchen. Haven't seen the movie yet still trying to find it.
Trudylynn Gunn The movie by the same title is also worth watching. The song is played throughout the movie, but the movie itself is compelling. I have it on my computer and could upload it to my channel. Problem is, I can only leave it up for 48 hours. Wonder
One of my favorite songs sung with so much feeling with Gene Pitney's voice which was so special and so well suited to this style of songs. I was 15 when this song was released and the same year I fell in love for the first time. Nice remembrances.
This is just pure class. Gene Pitney was a great artist. I play guitar in a heavy metal band, but I know great music when I hear it!:) My parents taught me to appreciate good music. Thanks for posting this clip! This rocks!!! Dale :)
Thank you for posting this fabulous singer, I adored him when I was a teenager and followed his career and saw him live many times in Australia. So sad he is no longer with us as he was still brilliant when he sadly passed.
Wonderful song; always thought he was singing "This sane granite planet falls apart," but I see after researching the lyrics, he's singing, "This clay and granite planet falls apart." At times I guess this granite planet isn't very "sane." In any event, it was nice to see and hear this live-performance version of the song. Thanks for putting it on UA-cam for all to enjoy.
Ah, ha! Interesting variation in the lyrics. But, once again, at least it cleared up my confusion as I thought I was hearing "sane granite planet" all these years.
Love this song!! Thanks for posting! It was tragic when we lost this beloved man. What a talent and God-send he was. Gene will be dearly missed. R.I.P. dear Gene. You are one of my musical idols.
Went to his concert in Townsville North Queensland about 7 years ago....fantastic performer and so many great records from the past......strange how time doesn't kill feelings.
I saw him live at a small theatre it was great he was made for the stage I think he was a frustrated actor but such a great talent. When I was in my teens i craved his songs and he expressed the feelings our generation had...........
I saw that movie and that was the first time I heard that song. It's a sad movie and the song gave it a true meaning of what it was like in those days.
Gene was pure talent. He had an odd way of rolling his jaw I've never seen in a singer before. Too bad that the younger folks have never heard of this great performer, but their time is coming too, when even later generations never heard of today's artists.
Saw him in the first rock concert of my life. Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars in the ampitheater of Evansville, IN. Remember running down to the stage like any groupie when he sang this. He was the headliner. The Supremes were also there, had just put out their first big hit, sang "Baby Love."
SAW him a few years back here in Vegas. He was great. I can't understand what ever happened to him for so many years. I liked all his records, had most of them.
You know what I love about Gene Pitney, as a classically trained musician myself, is not how fast you can sing, or how much coloratura, it’s the ability to hold the audience’s attention in the really slow stuff. Gene does it perfectly here and also in 24 Hours from Tulsa. What a voice, what a musician!
Kathy - Interesting to read comments from those who really appreciate what and who this man was. When asked what development and training allowed him to achieve the many accolades he had Gene replied "There was no development, no training". In other words he was a natural and in the early part of his career had what he called a 'listeners ear'.
maxine Gray and the fact that unlike a lot of modern stars, he carries the song purely with the power of his voice and not needing fancy dance moves. Ah, I just adore him ♥️ a rare talent. This song in particular is epic!
Kathy we are like-minded souls when it comes to Gene Pitney. Thankfully our National radio station keeps this man's name and music alive, introducing his music to a whole new audience.
I lived in West Hartford in 1967 and at that time there was a local band called The Wildweeds. They were outstanding. Run a search on youtube and see some of their old videos. No Good To Cry is one of the best rock songs ever. CT rules.
I recently found a true stereo version of this song recently on a CD. I have been looking for it in stereo for at least 30 years and thought it was never available. It is!
April 5, 2006 ... he had just given a wildly popular concert in Cardiff (the place where he was most admired). The grand finale was Town Without Pity, which got a standing ovation. A few hours later he died of a heart attack. Wales is called Y Wlad y Gan (Land of Song), so a singer who can make it there must be something special.
What a voice! Thanx Yesimustbestupid2 for the facts! And glimmer2158, this WAS the glorious 60's sounds of the perilous city' but then again, that was also the artistic dramatic sounds of life in the city-blues! of the times! Good ear though! Gene is so under-rated these days, as so many others! Keep searching, there are many gems U will find! Stevie And no, Perry Mason theme wanted to sound hip like the "today sounds" of the times! Thanx
I'm 14 and dancing to this song with the first boy I ever loved. Will never forget him or the song. The year: 1963. Where would we be without our memories! Thanks for this one.
I could not possibly love this song more. I listen to it every day.
I listen to it every day, too! Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

That is NOT lip- synced. I have heard this song a billion times and I can hear a lot of differences in the vocals all throughout the song. Gene was THE MAN.
How I miss those days, early 60s, and the music from that time.
I can relate to that
I was 15 when this came out and already a big fan. He had one of the best voices at that time and some really good songs - this one being my favorite of his.
I love this man. He has such a powerful, beautiful voice. I remember him as a child and loved all his songs.
Now That is Talent !! ... miss You !

Thanks so much for posting this. Pitney is one of the all-time greats.
He’s wonderful, just wonderful ♥️
His voice is so unique. I love listening to this song as he gets older as it changes as his voice does. What a legacy he has left at least for us baby boomers,
Another unsung and brilliant American singer songwriter. Beautiful song. It still works!
Beautiful voice and what a tall handsome guy he was. Gene left a legacy that will never wane
If you lived in the time that this song was popular, there is no way you weren't effected by this song. It was a movie about young love, rape and prejudice and also discrimination. This song puts it right there and tugs at your heart strings. Great song; great singer.
I Got the DVD starring legendary Kirk Douglas
One of my favorite songs of the sixties. I liked it very much as Gene Pitney's voice is very good and he sings with feeling and depth this song making one feel the tragedy he mentions in it. He is one of those singers that can paint a picture for one to see with the songs he sings. Very good.
I've always loved this song, and I'm an 80's rocker chick :)
This song is timeless and could speak about ANY town, big or small.
Used to spin this 45 from my Sister's record collection and to this day it's still one of my favorite tunes.
I fell in love with this song when I was little when watching look who's talking and Kristy allen was dancing to this song in the kitchen. Haven't seen the movie yet still trying to find it.
Simple set, excellent voice, brilliant song. This is what's missing from today's sound. I can't call it music, as it is not music.
i love this song Gene Pitney lots don't remember it. Thanks for sharing
Trudylynn Gunn The movie by the same title is also worth watching. The song is played throughout the movie, but the movie itself is compelling. I have it on my computer and could upload it to my channel. Problem is, I can only leave it up for 48 hours. Wonder
everything is missing from todays songs voice, harmeny, ect, ect, ect.
I used to stare at the tv when I saw him sing on any of those dance shows when I was a teenager.....I was in love. I loved Gene Pitney!!!! 7/11/10
The voice, this voice, its one of the best Ive ever heard.
One of my favorite songs sung with so much feeling with Gene Pitney's voice which was so special and so well suited to this style of songs. I was 15 when this song was released and the same year I fell in love for the first time. Nice remembrances.

If we STOP to gaze upon a star... I love this song. It is so mysterious
This is just pure class. Gene Pitney was a great artist. I play guitar in a heavy metal band, but I know great music when I hear it!:)
My parents taught me to appreciate good music.

This song was out when I was a teen and I still love it today.
Thank you for posting this fabulous singer, I adored him when I was a teenager and followed his career and saw him live many times in Australia. So sad he is no longer with us as he was still brilliant when he sadly passed.
I loved Gene Pitney. Every Christmas, my brother gave me about 3 of his albums to add to my collection. Those were the days!!
Thank you for this great song by Gene. Great to see this video. First time I've seen this.
"No it isn't very pretty what a town without pity can do." Great stuff.
DEMOCRAT party is without they are the house of horrors
Wonderful song; always thought he was singing "This sane granite planet falls apart," but I see after researching the lyrics, he's singing, "This clay and granite planet falls apart." At times I guess this granite planet isn't very "sane." In any event, it was nice to see and hear this live-performance version of the song. Thanks for putting it on UA-cam for all to enjoy.
MrManorAvenue I think its "slate and granite planet" on this performance
Ah, ha! Interesting variation in the lyrics. But, once again, at least it cleared up my confusion as I thought I was hearing "sane granite planet" all these years.
if6was929 Well, indeed it is "clay and granite planet"
+MrManorAvenue I thoughtthe same although it was I thought strange granite planet
Well, as we've learned from history, this granite planet can be awfully strange a lot of the time!
Always loved Gene Pitney….thank God they put him in the Rock Hall…very underrated…great vocalist…and this song is just so awesome
Love this song!! Thanks for posting! It was tragic when we lost this beloved man. What a talent and God-send he was. Gene will be dearly missed. R.I.P. dear Gene. You are one of my musical idols.

Love this oldie, saw him back in the 60s at the Foxx Theatre in Brookly NY

What a voice! What a personality! And totally one-of-a-kind.
I saw him live at a small theatre it was great he was made for the stage I think he was a frustrated actor but such a great talent. When I was in my teens i craved his songs and he expressed the feelings our generation had...........

This vid is an absolute treasure! Gene was outstanding and all of aspects of this song are enormous! Thanks for posting!
How can I tell you what this means to me..I love it!! Love the song and love the man!! They don't make artists like that anymore!!
This song does take you to another place and time. It is a haunting lyric.
When he sang he sang with a tear in his voice, Remarkable talent!!
Simply one of the great talents of the 60's. He wrote many hit songs for other artists of his time.
A terrific song, from a great artist.
One of the best songs about social ostracization and putting certain people down, delivered by an absolute music master.

Agree. Like an opera singer with no unnecessary movement. Dramatically powerful lyric and incredible strong voice.
This is a very mysterious song I love how gene sings it.
Great song from a great singer!
