I have purchased the Sony and I got it today and I can tell you just WOW Such a great overall phone and so different from other brands, that's why I love Sony...just WOW!!
Wow! Finally, a comprehensive review between the cam systems of the two handphones that truly covers all the different aspects. This is the best and most comprehensive comparisons I've seen! Grant, thank you so much for the excellent and truly comprehensive review.
I don’t understand how some are declaring a clear winner over the other. These two cameras are neck and neck with different strengths and weaknesses. If anything, Samsung has the edge as it’s a more versatile point and shoot with optional manual mode for extra control, but Sony makes up that edge by having hardware and UI that compliments its cameras, which Samsung is either lacking or doesn’t have as clean a UI. I have a S21U and considering switching to the 1 iii, but it isn’t because of the camera, that’s for sure.
Honestly, some are just fans or prefer a certain look. Neither are wrong, but I fall in the camp of no camera system is perfect and can win in all aspects. Fair assessment.
When it is about zoom, Samsung beats the hell out of Sony. All of the photos are much sharp at Samsungs phone. The front facing camera of the Samsung is again much better. I wonder why on Earth did Sony chose to put that old 8 MP selfie camera???
I was thinking to swith from s21u to Sony. But Sony is still not on that track! I hope I can switch very soon and sure because of the camera But honestly Sony looked better on low light pictures than samsung!
With the Samsung, I get a solid manual mode, solid auto point & shoot mode, solid night mode, & a solid selfie camera, where's the weakness or let down???? How can 1 not say the Samsung camera is not the overall better package where cameras are concerned... I'll give it to Sony for thier manual mode implementation yes... But for the overall better package... Samsung.
The experia 1 iii performs better in manual. The software is like a high range Sony dslr camera. Someone who knows photography can take shots from the Sony that the Samsung can't compete because it does not give that much manual control. The hardware of the Sony mimics what a photograper needs example a 70 mm lens etc
Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts. I agree to a certain extent, using manual/pro mode in most camera apps will give more control and lead to results closer to what the person taking the photo wants, especially pro photographers. That said, Sony's camera software doesn't seem as advanced as they claim since basic features like focus peaking are still left out. Their HDR is not as aggressive as other manufacturers, on purpose, and from the comments I feel some people are expecting more straight out of the camera when most serious photographers are probably shooting in RAW and post editing anyway.
First two flower shots from the Samsung were revolting: like you'd physically snipped out the flower and stuck it on the blurred background. Sharpening and contrast were way off while the Sony got both entirely natural. This issue crops up time and time again. The drainage ditch image from the Galaxy is over-bright and over saturated. The following shot (the crop of the ditch) is clearly over sharpened. Then check @3:24 - flower looks exquisite on the Sony and the Galaxy's AI processing ruins it entirely. Nobody can possibly persuade me that the shot at @3:56 on the Samsung is in any way correct vs. the Sony. This shootout completely vindicates Sony's approach, for me. AI can give you great results when it works. When it fails it completely stuffs it up - and the Galaxy (as with the most recent iPhone) stuffs it up more frequently than it gets it right. I lost count of how many images were heavily over saturated or otherwise over processed from the Galaxy - either with too much sharpening, too much contrast or heavy-handed HDR flattening out any depth. Xperia wipes the floor with this. Shot after shot after shot. These look like camera shots not smartphone shots. And honestly I was expecting this to be closer. Genuinely surprised at how bad I thought the Galaxy did. With respect, anyone thinking the S21U won this really could do with an eye test.
Love the detailed thoughts, and it definitely comes down to the type of image processing you prefer. I agree on the flower, Samsung lifts all the shadows and makes it look like its floating where Sony has those nice shadows for contrast.
100% agree. I sold my 5 ii recently and have got a Pixel 4 XL to use for a while and I really like it too but missing the Xperia. 1 iii needs to be bought at some stage.
So convinced have I been by this comparison that yesterday I actually bought an Xperia 1 iii. It arrives on Monday. Sure, the natural colours and light touch processing aren't for everyone but from a purist photography POV - and my personal POV - it's precisely what you want. Sony are the only manufacturers still placing the focus on better hardware over "clever" software and I'm excited to see what I can do with it. Clearly, the Sammy can zoom further and the selfie cam is better but l rarely take selfies and 4x Zoom is perfectly adequate. As a trade off for far better daylight (and night: it's dark like reality but cleaner and sharper for it - the stabilization on the Galaxy night video, for example, was abysmal and wrecked any advantage a brighter scene gave) photography, IMHO, I'll take that hit every day.
The 1III camera behaves exactly like an actual mirrorless camera. The night scene is the prime example of that. If you shoot in pitch black, then your camera is also supposed to see pitch black. S21 tries to mitigate the reality by cranking up ISO and lowering shutter speed, resulting in a brighter but very grainy image. That kind of photo is basically unusable for me. Also you should emphasize on one of the greatest strengths of the 1III which is the real-time tracking. This feature alone set the 1III camera apart from the rest of the market.
You don't get night mode, it takes like 12 images and does a composite. It's what photographers do when doing astro shots as well. There is less noise and image is bright. If you want images like the Sony, just use Auto or pro mode in the S21U. The bigger sensor on the S21U, will give you better noise performance in every ISO level.
I've watched a lot of Sony comparison videos. This is probably the best I've seen and the only one that used the pro mode to compare in low light situations. I prefer the Sony's true to color and natural lighting. Wish I saw this video while I was making my decision it would have made it easier. But I went ahead and got the Sony and will eventually learn how to use pro mode. But at least you showed me what it is capable of. Thanks!
it's a clear win for the s21 ultra from the versatility to the overall quality of the image. Especially that front-facing camera. The sony may have more natural colours but colours can be changed, unlike details.
Please don't confuse sharpening with details. Details were there in both but the galaxy sharpened more, which had drawbacks in many shots which didn't look natural. And starting from the natural colour is always preferable as you then have a reference to work from. Turning the terribly over baked colours the Galaxy produced here back into a naturally correct image would be virtually impossible from memory.
Well, clearly the S21 wins in terms of front camera and 10x optical zoom. Sony's 10X digital isn't close, and its front camera sucks. The Xperia stays pretty even with the S21 in still photography (the two cameras soom to go back and forth on "wins"), and it's down to what you prefer - the S21's edge enhanced look, or the Sony's more natural, creamy look. The Xperia also did a great job in night stills, both in manual and auto, and kept pace with the S21's more aggressive AI. Personally, I think the Xperia wins this category by a slight margin, 10X zoom notwithstanding. For video, the Xperia's video stabilization seems better, whereas the S21 handles difficult backlighting situations better. Obviously the S21 pumped more brightness into dark scenes, but it definitely looked "fake." I wonder what playing with ISO in Pro mode would do for Sony's night video. But overall the Samsung takes this category. So for me, it's very close. They both do certain things well. I think the S21's approach is more what the market wants right now, while the Xperia might appeal to those who like to fiddle more with settings. I am awaiting my pre-ordered Xperia 1iii, so it's with a heavy heart that I declare the S21 the overall winner by a slight margin across all the scenarios in this video (the 10x optical zoom is what I envy most). But I do take more stills than video, and the Xperia has other features that set it apart from the Samsung for me (ESPECIALLY Micro SD card support).
Galaxy S21 is better and much more consistent overall. Xperia is always hit or miss. You will never know what the final results will be and how many moments will be missed. This is from my personal experience having two previous Xperia flagship phones generations.
I bought my Sony Xperia 1 II last year and it was still convincingly useful up till now. But the funny thing is/was, why complain on Sony's high price while Samsung and iPhone enjoying their US$2000 tier status for years on end.
First, great video! Now to the point. These are my observations and with that are subjective. Samsung seemed to be inconsistent between shots. In some, the were bold, in others muted. While the bokeh in many cases seemed forced and digitally exaggerated. Now, I'm not saying the Samsung cameras are bad, but as a person who often takes photos with both my pocket shooter and Alpha, I look for consistency along with everything else. The Samsung, well, seemed to be a moody camera. As for the stabilization, I think Sony has it in most if not all of the examples shown. While on that, the night shot, again, in some shots are brightened giving it a fake look. While in others, it couldn't figure out what it wanted to do, or simply didn't compute certain things. In regards to the zoom, Samsung has it, however, I would say the quality is again, sometimes inconsistent between shots. All things said, both are capable shooters, but my money still goes with Sony.
I do notice that the S21 ultra is a little bit more aggressive with the sharpening and saturation, those engineers over at sony are some real purist, they can add some of the same sharpening, contrast and saturation as the iphones and Samsung's but refuse to because they want to keep the phone camera quality as close to their Mirrorless cameras as possible imo btw. Not everyone wants to or can control their phone camera manually, I think Sony should know this by now.
True, but Sony is sticking to their guns and keeping it a traditional camera experience. I get targeting photographers, but that seems like such a smaller market and what's the point in having so much processing power if you're not going to use it. I agree, "smartphones" should create "smart" images in auto. You can still have manual/pro mode for those who don't like that. Best of both worlds!
@@GrantLikesTech That would already be against Sony's idea of photography. Even in full auto mode, they always want the images to look as natural as they are as what a human eye would see in personal. That's why Sony's HDR doesn't dramatically boost the shadows too much, and colors are mostly not affected at all in the process. They improve the dynamic range to get close to the human eye's perception of the scene, but doesn't overly process the colors just for the sake of looking "appealing." Besides, Sony already gives us the best of both worlds now, as this Xperia 1 III can capture the scene in the most accurate way when using RAW format, and then users can later on process the images by themselves according to how they want them to look like. It's not as though there are no built-in filters on most social media platforms like IG and FB. Samsung and Apple users also edit their photos before posting, so there's no excuse to say that Sony phones are too difficult to use because they need editing, since editing their RAW photos is literally as simple as how it is for every other smartphone cameras today. The main advantage of this Sony is that users can get the most accurate shot straight out of the camera with little to no processing, and later they can improve the images if they want them to look different. On the others, users may be getting nice-looking shots already, but it would be a very difficult process to make them look natural, as the software already did a lot of editing and may have even removed many important details from the shots already. Even their RAW files aren't as good as the Sony's because of the nature of their sensors that are Quad Bayer, which affects the color rendering as well.
Great video! The inclusion of manual mode pics was very useful, it added a new dimension. I'm excited for your Pixel 6 Pro comparison (prolly later in Oct I'd guess). Damn! The samsung S21U colors/color science looks much better than the Mi11U in many shots. Wish Mi11U gave their color science a huge upgrade (esp with greens/foliage, night time highlight control, not over-HDRing and flattening up everything, preserving darker color shades and shadows etc.) Here the Xperia and S21U were almost neck to neck.
Loved the video! Showing both photos then side by side was much needed! Overall I think the Sony wins it for me. Samsung tend to over saturate the colours but the zoom will always win on the Samsung front. The colours in the Sony photos and the stabilisation in the night videos were really good! I also had a problem with the bokeh effect on the Samsung that I just can't put my finger on. I just wish you gave your thoughts and opinions at the end. Or will you be saving that for another video? Good work!
Thanks for the simple but very useful video! Your video was unique because there was no tune of advertisement or if any of brands have paid you. 👍Well done
Really great comparison Grant! Well for me the Sony has more natural colors but maybe bland for social media. The S21 Ultra has more contrast and punch, although not so realistic. Keep up the excellent work bro
Close shots both devices. My secret passion was (and still is Sony) but Samsung did the job right this year. Nice review. Regards from Dubrovnik/Croatia.
First and foremost thank you for the outstanding job comparing the phones (a lot of work went into making this video). Hopefully you'll provide updates whenever Sony releases improvements on the phone. By the way, are you able to acquire 5G and WiFi calling with the international version of the phone (assuming you're in the U.S.)? And if yes, what carrier are you on (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile)? Thanks!
When XPERIA rules the smartphone world is at the time of conducting a Speed test comparison with other Flagships. I never seen a smartphone beated XPERIA -1III in Speed test. XPERIA -1III won with the flagships including the iPhone -12pro max, Asus ROG-5,....etc. S21ultra and Mi-11ultra completely failed by scoring 5-6 points, whereas X1III scores 26 points... 😂
Nice comparison grant. I never expected the Samsung would win by such a huge margin. The lack of a proper night mode & the tendency to overexpose continues to plague Xperia, & that poor front camera. I'd definitely have to go with the galaxy S21 for this one. 👍
I'll point you to my comment further down: couldn't disagree more. Really couldn't. Beyond the 10x zoom, I thought the Xperia won this by a good margin. I give plenty of examples.
The Sony in all truth has the exact software and firmware as their Alpha dslr professional cameras 📸 You should see how the pics come out with a V small bit of tweaking in the Photo Pro app for pictures and Video Pro for...vidz 🤣Then the picture quality blows EVERY other camera out of the water! Add to that the best sound codecs and sound processing software & hardware, and a screen that is the only 1 in the world to give you 4K @120Htz with the Cinema Pro option in the Display settings that shows you what you're watching EXACTLY as the Cameraman and Director intended it to be seen, like you get in an Imax! I've been using the Xperia 1 mark iii since purchase, and this is after 15 years of Samsung and iPhone use. My goodness, if only I knew what I was missing out on sooner, I'd have been Sony fan boy #1 for the last 15 years, lol 😉 Seriously though try the Sony for a while and I guarantee you will fall in love with it, as well as be in awe with the sheer power & super dynamism it has to offer. Great video, as always 👍Peace brothers and sisters ❤️✌️🙏
I much prefer Sony natural approach with it's cameras, but it's that, a preference, a social media creator would prefer Samsung I guess as it looks more punching? Samsung clearly does zooming better though 🤷🏻♂️
As a photographer, I prefer neutral and natural color and contrast of the xperia 1 III over the overly processed S21 Ultra. It is easier and better to edit from that neutral platform to achieve the effects we like. It is not easy to dial back over processed photos, on the other hand. You are clearly not using the Cinema pro settings when capturing video. That makes your comparison invalid. Try HLG and the available LUTs in cinema pro first.
Lol, appreciate the feedback but it invalidates nothing. Go see my other videos if you want to see cinema pro. If you feel Samsung looks better then why should I have to color grade to get similar results? Also cinema pro is fine for shooting clips but not steady shot stabilization isn't available since stabilization isn't great with it.
Thanks for this video. Sony has come a long way. Samsung has finally detuned their saturation in the main camera which is great but it comes back in the Ultrawide. Sony also did well in the darker pictures too. Only problem with Sony is they ask way too much money for their phones and miss out on little things such as a Selfie camera that looks horrible. If the price was $1000 for the Xperia 1 and $800 for the xperia 5 then I would sell my S21 Ultra and give them a try again. You deserve over 100,000 subscribers for your videos. Most phones do a lot well in today's age but it seems like it is the camera battle that is the main thing now. Bring on the Pixel 6 Pro
Dude unlike Samsung the washing machine maker (origins), Sony is a freaking premium company who innovated lot of high end electronics. They are THE best in Televisions Audiophile Equipments (Debatable) Mirrorless Cameras Gaming Consoles Wearable Audio Equipment Audio and Video Equipments and much more. If anything SONY should charge double of what companies like apple and samsung charges for their totl devices because SONY's pedigree is that high. So if you feel it's expensive, there is always Samsung and Apple products. Sony isn't forcing anyone to buy their products and they will not cater to what mainstream demands. They would produce what they think is best way and they know better than the consumer. BTW I will gladly pay over $2000 for Xperia 1iii when compared to apple and samsung that charge $1500 for their totl devices
@@arcsephiroth if you are a camera enthusiast like I used to be and had a mirrorless Sony camera this would be great. But for 90% of people that just want a point and shoot smartphone guess what, the pictures ain't all that good. Sorry. But Sony needs to do more with the processing to be on top. Not everybody wants to go in the pro mode and adjust everything then go home and download it on your computer and do Post. Even though I have a Samsung s21 ultra because I do a lot of outdoor adventures and I need a good tele camera I am not big on Samsung at all. And I truly refuse to get an Apple phone due to how they screw everybody every year with new charges and other items that you need to purchase. I've owned every Nexus and pixel phone since the beginning so I'll give the 6 pro a try and see how it does. Was going to buy the Sony Xperia 5 Mark 3 but unfortunately I read way too many reviews how glitchy everything is on the phone which is kind of disappointing because it's the perfect size for me. Hate having a phablet in my pants pocket.
I honestly think the Samsung is better. Why ? In point and shoot it is better by far. And it also has a manual photo-video mode, which many seem to forget. The only point where I like the Sony is the colorimetry, but at the same time it's the easiest thing to correct in post production 🤷🏽♂️.
I always like your photography videos. I have a question is the Bokeh on your Samsung lvl higher? when I take pictures the bokeh effect doesn't seem to look that extreme like in this video. either way great video
The blurring background of S21 is kinda disturbing when you look at the picture, while the Sony looks like pleasing to the eye. And somehow the blurring looks like it's the same as you look in an object in person..
There seems to be a beta if you search it should be easy to find. Not linking here since I haven't tried it and don't want to be responsible for any negative experiences.
It's very sad to see Sony still can't compete when it comes to camera quality... It's just so weird! I really don't understand why they still haven't fixed basic problems like terrible dynamic range in some situations, ridiculous portrait mode, awful video quality and lack of seamless transition between the cameras. It's just very disappointing because the hardware on their phones is simply the best imo! I really like the colours on the Xperia though, they look amazing most of the time! Thanks for the awesome comparison as always, love your channel!
Fun fact, the cameras in the Samsung phone are from Sony (the company) It's just too much computational and AI post shot editing that is employed by Samsung.
@@TheBioAbyssal yeah, I do agree Samsung ford over the top specially when it comes to colours. Samsung does too much and Sony does too less... Oh well :/
@@YgorCortes however, as we perceive things in the real world, not everything is ultra vivid...in some cases it can muted. I'd rather have a trier image versus an image that is pleasing to the eye...
Sony's color science is superior! But damn, they really need to work on dynamic range! If their dynamic ranges would be equal, i would pick Xperia right of the bat without doubt over S21 Ultra.
I prefer Samsung at least in most of the pictures it brings out the detail, and like it or not it does make the picture more pleasing and less flat. Colors are just too flat from my preference at least
This makes me realise how much I prefer the look of the images that come out of the Xperia. Samsung better for zoom and low light shots, social situations with that point and shoot mentality. I really like how Sony handles stuff. Colour accuracy and shadows are usually much closer to real life. Very different phones for a very different consumer.
Appreciate you stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Agree, they take opposite approaches which is why I feel most will clearly prefer one over the other.
@@GrantLikesTech I think most will ultimately choose Samsung. Which is a shame but Sony have set out to go for a particular crowd. I think they can definitely build on what they have in a super positive way.
..... Really?! The daylight images from the galaxy weren't just bad, they were awful. Not a single realistic colour, edges were over sharpened (leading to the flowers looking physically cut out from their background). Nothing looked natural or correct. In photography - proper photography, not what tech reviewers think is photography - the aim is to produce a natural result. That's the aim. That's what a good camera produces: a detailed, natural image. On that metric, the Galaxy was failing all over the shop and the Xperia was delivering the goods. And what the hell good is a bright night video when stabilization goes flying out the window?! I could not disagree with you more. The Xperia handed the Galaxy it's ass on a plate in most of these examples.
@@timaustin2000 Sony has abit realistic color and that is it ! Exposure, portraits mode, selfies, night 🌙 mode, video (Back and front ), Night video 📹 all are bad 👎 on sony. Please watch the clip again. Thanks
I've owned Pixels and Nexuses for years. Nothing has ever made me more confident that the Pixels are the best Android than owning the S21 Ultra. Skipped the Pixel 5 since it's not a proper flagship, and I definitely regret it. Yes, the S21U is definitely loaded on the spec sheet and has too many features for any human to realistically use, but I still enjoyed my experience with the Pixels more. I often find the "problems" with the Pixels to be wildly exaggerated. I always got amazing battery life out of my Pixels (like 7+ hours of screen on time). Idk if my product was a fluke, but I have several screenshots of my battery life going beyond 7 hours, despite people regularly saying the Pixels have bad battery life. Nobody can ever convince me otherwise - the Pixels have better cameras. Idk how Samsung has currently tuned the processing for the S21U, but the photos always look soft to me, with low contrast. Samsung hates shadows and over-brightens everything, and that consequently makes the photos look flat and lifeless (and also fake) when compared to the Pixel shots. I feel like I get better contrast, better and more realistic colors with the Pixels, and consequently more detail and pleasing photo. To me the S21U also missed the mark with the telephoto cameras in my opinion. Yes, they zoom in really far. Sure. Great. They're 10mp and I can tell. Every time I use the 3x or 10x lenses, I can see lower detail when I Pixel peep than when I use the Primary camera. I would have preferred less zoom and 12mp. 2x and 5x with 12mp sensors would have been far better, because then I could at least have some sort of focal length option that doesn't feel like a compromise. Yes, I'm nitpicking, but the camera is very important to me. This could have been fixed with some sort of "high resolution zoom processing" like that found on the Pixel, where they can basically recover some detail and enhance the image at least a little bit, but no such feature exists on the Samsung, or if it does, it doesn't do a good job. Without cropping in, at all, I can tell that the resolution is lower. Idk it just seemed like a massive miss for me and defeats the purpose of zooming in the first place. Yes, there are rumors that the Pixel 6 Pro is going to have a low resolution zoom lens, but they also have superior processing where they can bin exposures to recover a lot of detail and resolution, so I have more faith in that than I do with the Samsung. Long camera rant, but deal with it. Finally, I know that this is beating a dead horse, but the Pixel just works better. Nobody can convince me otherwise. It's all small things, nothing serious, but I've just noticed problems with the S21U that I never had with Pixels. Sometimes screen rotations do this weird thing where it flattens whatever I'm looking at. Some apps just seem buggier than they were before. Android Auto is seriously just stupid now, and I have no idea why, but I never had problems with Android Auto when I had a Pixel. Bixby is a failure of an Assistant and just needs to be removed for the far-superior Google Assistant, but I can't remove it entirely. The Galaxy Buds Pro still want to default to Bixpy as the primary assistant. I can only map Bixpy in a long press of the power button, not the Google assistant. The bloatwear and duplicate apps are just asinine. I don't need Samsung's web browser. I don't need Samsung's Pay (especially now that they removed the magnetic option, it's literally the same thing as Google Pay, but worse). I don't need Samsung's Calendar. I don't need Samsung's contacts. Google does all of these better than Samsung and my phone is stuck with having 50 duplicate apps because Samsung has too much pride to just use Google's services by default and it regularly causes me to get duplicate notifications (from both Calendars, etc.). Samsung's browser is also constantly putting "offers and deals" in my notifications, even though I never use their browser. It's just stupid and it ruins the user experience for me. Not to mention, I'm just fully aware than I'm waiting longer for updates, and I'm aware that those updates won't last as long as they will on the Pixel. Truly, nothing has made me appreciate the Pixel phones more than using Samsung's best offering. I'll never stray from the Pixel line again, especially now that they have vertically integrated their processor designs.
Just cannot compete with the S21U, the sensor is not even comparable. S21U is not even using Pro mode and it's capability to shoot 12 Bit raw. Yes Sony fans, S21U has a pretty deep pro mode.
Both do great, but Samsung wins overall for sure, but only in camera. I bought the Xperia because no notch, no huge camera bump, ultra wide aspect ratio, headphone jack etc The Sony is the only no notch phone with over 450 PPI. I just have no other option. If only the Zenfone 8 flip had better PPI screen...
No contest! S21 Ultra wins hands down. Sony is over exposed, no night mode to film at night.... Sony has pro mode that needs to be used to make it anywhere near Samsung's point and shoot abilities
For all situations, s21 ultra will definitely wins by it's strength on both video and photo . While s21 ultra does has a pro mode, but the auto mode is good enough and user won't think about utilize it. Sony's strength lays more in manual and photographers enthusiast [who loves manual mode] will appreciate xperia I iii character. In flower shots, Sony offer more exquisite look by having keep the shades while Samsung bring all the dynamic shades into 1 high level and a bit too saturated. But in video, Samsung's hdr approach results in overall more consistent lighting. No win here, this is a bit like Yin and Yang.
I like the daytime pictures on the Xperia better because of the more natural colours, but I think the lowlight pictures on the Sony are just too soft looking. S21U wins in that aspect.

Hard to choose on the images. Some better on Sony, some better on Samsung. Video looks a lot better on Samsung apart from at night where it was too bright and shaky
The only reason for me having a Sony XZ premium phone to schwitch to a Sony experia 1 iiii is the micro sd slot, which the Samsung galaxy s21 ultra hasnt. I wonder wether the Samsung Galaxy S22 ultra will be having one
Have had the Xperia 1iii for a month. Honestly it's disappointing and if I could, I would return it. The autofocus is awesome, but the IQ is pretty bad regardless of which camera or using basic or "Pro" mode.
Appreciate the opinion. Others indicate they like it. I also like it to show the actual full photos. You can speed up the video or not watch if it's wasting your time. 😉
@@GrantLikesTech I like the way you did it, better to have the option to look at them individually then not. Tim just lacks common sense. There is a slider for the time, double tap to go forward 10s, and a speed selection paired with a pause button.
it looks like the samsung unnatural vibrant colours washes out alot of the detail where the sony less colours but more details. I aren't knocking the samsung at all its a good camera but it yea depends on what you like
Cinema Pro gets you iPhone levels of quality day and night time with added 120fps 4k shooting. This reviewer didn't shoot in cinema Pro. If you think Sony's stabilization is good on basic video, Cinema Pro stabilization will blow your mind away. You just need to make sure your shutter angle and iso are chosen perfectly for the situation you are about to shoot.
Sony used to compete all out with Nokia and Samsung in the olden days. Now its a niche phone - not even pureview niche but only for die hard fanboys. Colors are natural and spot on! But try posting that on social media? It's gonna look very flat. It doesn't even do hdr properly. But you can post process it? 🙄 Funny thing here is, Sony doesn't have any excuse to be this bad with their camera phones, so they are deliberately choosing to be.
They are deliberately doing this. You think the world leader in Mirrorless Cameras don't know how to tune their phone camera. All of the major brands use Sony sensors in their phones. Sony simply don't want smartphone cameras to take market share away from their alpha line. They learned this the hard way with their Walkman lines. Once the go to equipment for portable Audio (Walkman line) got destroyed buy smartphone Audio. Now Walkman line of products are niche for audiophiles only.
I never got the point of these comparisons. The S21 Ultra has received several camera updates since release when Sony hasn't released any camera changes via software updates.
I don't get the point of this comment. So the cameras can't be used or compared for a few months? If you're not interested, then simply don't watch or comment and keep it moving. Thank you.
@@GrantLikesTech Every tech reviewer does this and puts the new phone at a disadvantage because the other phones have been improved based on feedback from consumers. Why not wait not wait until the new phone has been patched before the comparison so it's more fair. You shouldn't have to wait months for the phone to perform as advertised anyway. This is a mindset manufacturers have somehow engrained in people, which is flat out wrong.
Even if Samsung has better sharpness and more detail in most of the photos but the colors makes me to like more the sony on the day shots. The nights shots not only that in the darker phots the Samsung wins hands down but that tint on most of the Sony night shots, form me is just neah.

The same. Because of it Galaxy S21 Ultra is significantly cheaper and comes with 2 years of warranty on my country. Parallel imported Xperia costs more and comes with nothing.
How the fk is Sony not dominating the cameras in smartphones. They literally make the sensors for 80% of the phones out there plus they have a division making some of the top dslrs in the world. Sony is a fkn joke lol.
Gotta be honest here, samsung is in a whole other level than sony. Sony should stop making phones tbh... Samsung dominated in everything in my opinion. Way more detail in almost every pic. I just ordered the S21 Ultra at a discount. Only paying 427$ for the 256gb, buds 2, and a galaxy tag! I traded in my s20 ultra with a cracked screen lol super good price.
I'm not crossing my fingers with the front camera since they haven't paid attention to that in years. Zoom, maybe to a certain extent, but Sony isn't known for AI/software processing. Thanks for watching, Bradley!
Thanks, glad you liked it and hopefully found it helpful.
I definitely agree, the Xperia 1 iii is a great phone, but I wouldnt switch from a galaxy to it because of the cameras.
I was thinking to swith from s21u to Sony. But Sony is still not on that track! I hope I can switch very soon and sure because of the camera
But honestly Sony looked better on low light pictures than samsung!
@@timaustin2000 good on ya man. Exciting. Be a while before I can grab one but hopefully I'll get it sometime early next year. Enjoy!
Glad it was helpful for you to make an educated decision for what you need/want. Hope your enjoy it and create some great content!
Thanks!
Thanks, glad you found it helpful
Great comperision ❤ love from Bangladesh
I liked the S21 better tbh
That's cool, no wrong preferences here.
it's a clear win for the s21 ultra from the versatility to the overall quality of the image.
Congratulations. You make very good comparisons. Maybe the best on UA-cam. Greetings from Extremadura. Spain 🇪🇸
Thanks, much appreciated
Sony has mostly sharp images, but sometimes s21 looks better, sometimes both looks over exposed, s21 definitely wins in zoom level and detail round
S21 will always win in zoom given its periscope lens. Thanks for watching!
Galaxy S21 is better and much more consistent overall. Xperia is always hit or miss. You will never know what the final results will be and how many moments will be missed. This is from my personal experience having two previous Xperia flagship phones generations.
What did you drink? Maybe you have the Xperia 1 iii? Ultra literally kills Sony om every shot
I bought my Sony Xperia 1 II last year and it was still convincingly useful up till now. But the funny thing is/was, why complain on Sony's high price while Samsung and iPhone enjoying their US$2000 tier status for years on end.
@@ktomorful no, sony looks natural, samsung artificial, buy what you like, but it's not true that one just works best, not that simple
Thanks, also appreciate your detailed thoughts on this.
Thanks so much grant for this review. Both had a lot of strong points and weaknesses. Personal preference will be the main thing for consumers
They improve the dynamic range to get close to the human eye's perception of the scene, but doesn't overly process the colors just for the sake of looking "appealing."
Besides, Sony already gives us the best of both worlds now, as this Xperia 1 III can capture the scene in the most accurate way when using RAW format, and then users can later on process the images by themselves according to how they want them to look like.
They do know that. Their auto mode is still very good.
@@GrantLikesTech Smartphone should create 'smart' images in both auto&manual mode. Then the 'smart' user can fully utilize the features.
Great video!
The inclusion of manual mode pics was very useful, it added a new dimension.
I'm excited for your Pixel 6 Pro comparison (prolly later in Oct I'd guess).
Damn! The samsung S21U colors/color science looks much better than the Mi11U in many shots.
Wish Mi11U gave their color science a huge upgrade (esp with greens/foliage, night time highlight control, not over-HDRing and flattening up everything, preserving darker color shades and shadows etc.)
Here the Xperia and S21U were almost neck to neck.
Thanks, glad you found it helpful. I'm definitely excited for the Pixel 6 too!

Hi Grant Awesome Video! Impressive Quality
S21 ultra is better for me
Thanks Grant, I appreciate what Sony is doing by keeping up with the competition but it's way out of my price range.
Nice work.
Xperia's night video is dark, but its stabilization in night video is incredible. I wonder what Sony's doing.
Yup, that steady shot is very good.
Making the Video so dark that you can't see any shaking 😁 Just kidding, Sony is doing a good job there 😉
Thanks for this video.
It has always been the battle of cameras since the prehistoric Nokia era 😭 When Nokia disappeared, Sony just stopped "trying".
Dude unlike Samsung the washing machine maker (origins), Sony is a freaking premium company who innovated lot of high end electronics. They are THE best in
Televisions
Audiophile Equipments (Debatable)
Mirrorless Cameras
Gaming Consoles
Wearable Audio Equipment
Audio and Video Equipments and much more.

The blurring background of S21 is kinda disturbing when you look at the picture, while the Sony looks like pleasing to the eye. And somehow the blurring looks like it's the same as you look in an object in person..

That manual mode on Sony is really good.
It's very sad to see Sony still can't compete when it comes to camera quality... It's just so weird!
I really don't understand why they still haven't fixed basic problems like terrible dynamic range in some situations, ridiculous portrait mode, awful video quality and lack of seamless transition between the cameras. I really like the colours on the Xperia though, they look amazing most of the time!

Sony ❤️ it gives more natural photo shot
Sony xperia 1iii has the best looking photos smooth color but sharp.. Look like dslr photos.
Both do great, but Samsung wins overall for sure, but only in camera.
I bought the Xperia because no notch, no huge camera bump, ultra wide aspect ratio, headphone jack etc
The Sony is the only no notch phone with over 450 PPI.
No wrong preferences here. All depends what you like and how you prefer to shoot. Appreciate you stopping by!
Thanks for video...
You're welcome
First, thanks for watching. Second, very well thought out and fair comments. Much appreciated!
I like the daytime pictures on the Xperia better because of the more natural colours, but I think the lowlight pictures on the Sony are just too soft looking. S21U wins in that aspect.
Fair and balanced assessment. Thanks!
i am an xperia guy but should say that samsung pulled of evrything from s21 ultra
Great review! Sony for me.
Thanks
Omg samsung galaxy s21 ultra can replace a dlsr in 4k video the quality is the same that's insane you can use it for youtube vlogs or normal video
I was expecting a FullHD 30fps and 60fps video recording comparison.
I used to include 60fps, but since the overall video is exported in 30fps you don't get to see the video in its full frame rate.
@@GrantLikesTech It's fine no worries. Good video! keep it up! wishing your channel to grow! 🔥👍 Stay safe
Thanks!
I think the sony wouldn't beat s20 ultra let alone s21
Sony Xperia1iii 😍👌
Have had the Xperia 1iii for a month. Honestly it's disappointing and if I could, I would return it. The autofocus is awesome, but the IQ is pretty bad regardless of which camera or using basic or "Pro" mode.
Don't have to show 1 then the other then both . Waste of time.
Please just show both together only
Appreciate the opinion.
Thanks, but it's ok to prefer it presented differently. There's just more constructive ways to say it. 😉
it looks like the samsung unnatural vibrant colours washes out alot of the detail where the sony less colours but more details.
I aren't knocking the samsung at all its a good camera but it yea depends on what you like
S21U has great vcam but wasn't build to withstand video shooting. 1iii on the other hand, built withstand for video shooting.
Conclusion: Sony Xperia 1 iii offer réal / true colours!
We want competitive video of iPhone 12 pro max camera with sony xperia 1iii💝
Cinema Pro gets you iPhone levels of quality day and night time with added 120fps 4k shooting. This reviewer didn't shoot in cinema Pro. If you think Sony's stabilization is good on basic video, Cinema Pro stabilization will blow your mind away. You just need to make sure your shutter angle and iso are chosen perfectly for the situation you are about to shoot.
Bardzo dziękuję 😘
Samsung robi lepsze zdjęcia, natomiast filmy video w nocy na obu telefonach wypadają słabo- serdeczności, Piotrek z Polski
Compare with sony xperia 5 mark 4 with other flagships
Sony for the win more natural tone. The other looks overprocessed
Funny thing here is, Sony doesn't have any excuse to be this bad with their camera phones, so they are deliberately choosing to be.
To each their own for sure. I've posted them to social media and they were pretty well received, so definitely depends on each person's preferences.
@@arcsephiroth which Apple didn't have any problem. They allowed the iPhone to cannibalize and end their ipods bec. It was inevitable.
@@alvinds5479 iPods aren't a thing compared to what Walkman brand was.
What you do is good, but any new camera phone will lose nearly all comparisons before it's officially released.
I can't be the only person that asked this question.
@@smooth37 actually you are because it makes no sense to have to wait. If you actually look at my channel you'll notice I continue to make these videos several months later so people can see the progression over time. You shouldn't have to wait months for the phone to perform as advertised anyway. This is a mindset manufacturers have somehow engrained in people, which is flat out wrong.
You have to mention what chip do you use on the s21 ultra.
Sorry it's an after thought since we only get the Snapdragon version in the US. I at least list it in some other S21 Ultra comparisons.
Even if Samsung has better sharpness and more detail in most of the photos but the colors makes me to like more the sony on the day shots. The nights shots not only that in the darker phots the Samsung wins hands down but that tint on most of the Sony night shots, form me is just neah.
Fair enough, appreciate you sharing your thoughts.
@@GrantLikesTech I am still a very subjective fan of HTC, Sony and LG and it will stay with me forever but I am expecting Sony to be a more balanced device and it never really delivered. Was it to hard to make software for the night shots? Was it to hard to let us change the refresh rate or the resolution to 2k or lower in order to preserve the battery life? Was it to hard to attach a better sensor for the selfie camera witch is used often by many people and often by the girls? There are many question marks.I want Sony to be a real player in the game as I even dare to hope to see HTC again.Where are the good old days when it was so hard to choose a flagship device (HTC ONE, SONY Z, LG G/V, SAMSUNG G/N, ).
Thanks
Welcome
Sony wins
Galaxy s21 ultra is the most comprehensive phone of the year, so I will choose samsung😂
What does that mean? You mean it has the most features?
@@jellysmith4350 Samsung is comprehensive in all aspects ok😆😆😆
@@kenpin4497 ah. So it has a headphone jack? (As I need this). And expandable storage? (As I need this). And the best 120hz 4k screen? (As I need this). And stereo speakers? (As I need these). If not, I guess it may not be the most comprehensive phone, for me. Mebbe stop presenting your opinion, as objective fact....
@@jellysmith4350 It is not necessary to use a 4k screen, because it consumes too much battery
@@kenpin4497 Yes. MOST features, on flagship phones are unnecessary. But do I want it, to watch 4k movie content? Yes, I do. Again, your opinion is not fact. You may be happier in life, when you start to appreciate that.
I believe that Pixel 6 (even not Pro) will destroy both these phones in terms of photo / video quality. And it's almost certainly will be cheaper.
We'll see I guess. 😉
Also, really depends on what type of image processing you prefer, but I'm definitely excited for the Pixel 6 phones too.
S21 Ultra is preferred 85-90% of the shots. I am no Samdung fan boi either. Looks like the S21 Ultra has the better software most of the time.
Te faltó, comparación, del audios, los altavoces
Sony does not fake natural looks
Compare oppo find x3 pro vs vivo x60pro+
Would love to if I had those phones
S21 ultra 💪🏼
Cool
You know, Man. Galaxy S21 Ultra is easy to get in my Country, Indonesia. While Sony is hard to get
Yeah, I can understand that. It's tough for us to get phone from some manufacturers in the US too (ex. Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, etc).
I traded in my s20 ultra with a cracked screen lol super good price.
iPhone 12 vs galaxy s 21
bravo
Thanks
Sony have no match with the king of zoom
The two weak points of the Sony, the front cam and zoom. But am sure that can be fixed via software update
Unfortunately Sony don't have tradition of fixing something by software updates. It never happened before and won't happen now.
I'm not crossing my fingers with the front camera since they haven't paid attention to that in years. Zoom, maybe to a certain extent, but Sony isn't known for AI/software processing. Thanks for watching, Bradley!
