    Thank you very much for this excellent tutorial!! Completely exhaustive, clear and accurate. Very easy to understand what ADSR is and how it works after watching your video. Congratulations!!

    at 5:40 i think that when the sustain is on max the decay may still be noticeable if you play like "staccato" or really fast notes and the duration of the note is smaller than the attack+delay.

  • @riccello
    @riccello 5 років тому +1

    Also, ADSR envelope can be extended to APDS1S2R if we add Plateau (P) which is the duration to hold at Max level after release before Decay begins, S1 being the Starting level of sustain, S2 being the ending level of sustain. If we were synthesizing a piano, strings don’t ring forever, so we need a ramp down in the sustain, it’s not a straight line.
    Also, the ramp up and down should be exponential, not linear.
    Awesome videos!

    Your tutorial is great. I was searching for a way to help a friend learn synthesis from scratch, and this does help with ADSR. I'll see if he does understand it better with those cool animated graphics. However, as a somewhat experienced keyboardist, I'd like to advise against using automated cutoff in this lesson, since the filter movement is something that will definitely throw off someone with no synth knowledge at all. They might mistake the actual effects an amp ADSR causes in sound for the effects caused by the filter ADSR. Just a quick tip. Nice work :D

    Very good explanation! Thanks! Could you explain what the Sustain and Release do in a filter envelop, please?

    @chriswel
    You have a point there. most envelopes are speed based, which means that the release will be shorter if it starts from a lower level. Some envelopes however are based on time, which means that the release will take the same time to fade out regardless of its starting position. Both ways are viable, but the speed based is more natural and common. however, sometimes natural is not what one is looking for ;)

    Great video!
    But one question: At the end, you show that the Release starts from the previous level in the envelope. Is the Release time still the same or does it change with the level it starts (looks like this in the animation)? In other words, is the R parameter actually a Release angle or really the time span (or are both models rational)? I would think that the release of a quiet note would take less time than from a loud note.

    @SynthSchool GREAT VIDEO
    just one question at the end you state that the release starts from where the envelope was when you left the note. so if you play a short note and it never reaches its maximum of the attack does it still jump right to the release especially if you have the decay at 100% OR will it still have to go through the decay?

    So if attack doesn’t reach maximum level at the time of the release, is it right that the power level still rises to sustain value? Maybe sometimes it can be desired,
    but...
    Seems like a better (more natural) implementation would be to have sustain value be relative to the max level reach during the attack, not absolute as it is shown here.
    In other words, if you specify sustain as percentage of max, say 75%, then no matter how long we hold the key for, it will pull back by 25% from the level at which it was released.
