- In this video Andy shows you how to paint the roses, traditionaly used to decorate canal boats in the UK. There are a number of different methods to do this, most of which use single brush strokes. However this method uses smaller brushes and a more precise style, which makes it easy for beginners to copy.
I had an old watering can that I wanted to paint in canal art style, I'm not usually very arty but I came across this video and it inspired me to have a go, thank you
It's not difficult to do Fiona. Just practice first. If you paint onto something like a piece of glass, a mirror or a ceramic tile, you'll be able to wipe your paint off with a rag dipped in thinners so you can try as many times as you like.
Great video andy very informative
Oh so glad your back Andy! First found you via your excellent video "How to restore ABS plastic" which I done and it worked brilliantly so thanks for sharing and now I will be having a go at painting these roses...keep your lovely videos coming & welcome back Kind regards Lisa in Oxford
Thanks Lisa. Watch out for a more advanced canal art video, with different colours and types of flowers, coming soon.
Very helpful video, thanks!
Hi Andy, I am going to paint an old cement mixer in craft style with flowere and whatever. Never done it before and not many videos out thier, so I was made-up to find yours, thanks. Can I ask for the black bass should i use acrilic matt or satin finish? Thanks for your video, stay safe.
Assuming your mixer is going to be outside, the only type of paint you should use is an oil based gloss enamel. Dulux weathershield works well. Gloss enamel is the traditional paint to use for canalware and is the hardest wearing. If you only want small pots you can use Humbrol enamels (make sure you get the gloss ones) from your local model shop or you can buy slightly larger tins of coach painting enamel (very good quality and highly recommended) from Craftmaster. You might have to get those online though.
I might try something like that myself on one of my tool boxes to spruce it up. BTW i wanted to ask is canal art like folk art? I have never heard the term used in North America before
Yes, it is a kind of folk art.
Hard to see. Needs to move the camera out a bit x
