This is a life-changing quilting tip or sewing tip for how to use a seam ripper the RIGHT way (believe me, there is definitely a wrong way!). Quilters and sewists often despise their dates with "Jack" (their seam ripper!), because it's often a little tedious to correct your mistakes. Maybe you sewed the wrong pieces together - and you need to undo it. This method makes it fast and easy - you won't believe it!

Using the presser foot as a third hand is something I learned (all by myself), when I first started to learn how to sew on a machine when I was 10. One of the best sewing “tricks” ever and useful in so many situations.

Tip: For those who don't want to spend extra $$ for a special seam ripper like Mary has, you can use a regular pencil eraser to do the same thing, since it's made out of rubber as well.... just make sure it's clean first. I use the large, rectangular kind... as opposed to the kind on the end of a pencil... lay it on its side and swipe to the side to pull out the thread. It works great and removes 2 inches of the thread at a time.

I get a pack of six erasers from a local store that has dollar in it but most stores charge $1.25. Erasers are the BEST for a lot of things.
I just use tape as I would if it were a lint roller. I have at least six seam rippers Donʼt need another one!

I use a rubber thimble. You can get a packet of them for a dollar.

I have accidentally cut my fabric using this method. So use it carefully. A sticky lint roller works better in my opinion. It pulls out all the threads and captures them for the trash later.
I have accidentally cut my fabric picking seams out also. I guess we just need to be careful when we're handling a seam ripper no matter what method we use. I've had really good luck with this method when I stabilize it under my presser foot. Did you try that?
Blue paint acts just a sticky lint roller, too. I also use it to tape to the sewing machine's seam allowance lines to mark and extend as a seam allowance guide.

I was just about to suggest the sticky lint roller rather than that little gadget. It's very easy and the chance of damage to the fabric is minimal!

If you don't have the fixer top, you could use a clean eraser to grab the thread bits too. I learned several years back about using the ball end inside and felt ao silly for not having known that.😂 It was probably on the package when purchasing, but never read it. And, I don't remember Grandma, Mom, or Home Ec teachers ever teaching that. Thanks for spreading the word!

I’ve recently learned to use an eyebrow shaver as a seam ripper. I’ve NEVER accidentally cut a hole in the fabric with that tool. I don’t remember where on UA-cam I learned about it, but it has revolutionized my seam ripping!

Mary, I've been using this type of Seam Ripper for years! It has saved me hours of hard work. I love the ball gripper in the end. I have one that has the textured rubber knob on BOTH ends!!!
I never thought about putting the one end of the fabric under the presser foot (after flattening the seam) and then trying to rip out in one long pass.

Thank you Mary on learning how to properly use a seam ripper. As for all the pesky threads, I've always used a lint roller as it catches all the threads and linty bits on the work surface. I also use my lint roller on my ironing surface and cutting mat. It really picks up all the thread bits.

This method is not new it’s been around for so many years. I came across another video that was probably filmed about eight years ago maybe 10 years ago.

It's a GREAT tip and YES - it saves a TON of time!!! And the more you practice the quicker (and easier) it gets! Be careful at first...and it'll eventually come naturally.

It really works! Be careful with your first couple of tries - until you get comfortable with it. I would experiment with a few scraps. I am most careful when I come to intersections, but I found that I really can rip out quickly and safely the more I have used it. Thanks for watching and thank you for your comment!

Great tool! I’ll have to get one. When I have to rip a seam, I use my lint roller to pick up all the little thread pieces from the table surface.

This is a great method for short seams! I also like The Quick Ripper (a battery-operated seam ripper) for longer seams. 😊

My husband showed me your video and at first I was dubious.
I decided to try it after basting 5ft worth of fabric then realized that I had made a mistake. Ugh was my initial thought until I remembered your video.
It worked so well that I almost ran to tell my husband. He's one of my biggest supporters.
I've also shared your video with my friend and sewing enthusiast in England who also plans on buying one for her mom.
Although I already have three seam rippers, I have understood that they can dull over time so I may just go ahead and get this one too. 😁

Love putting fabric under presser foot without using the needle. I’ll try it!
(I’ve used the sticky paper from a lint brush to get the threads off the ‘seam ripped’ seam allowance… which usually works well.)

Another idea: Recently at a social gathering one woman told us about her electric seam ripper. She brought it to show us. It was a cute little purple device that looks very similar to hair trimmers. They're about 20 to 25 dollars online, and it's on my wishlist. Then you could also use a lint roller to get the thread off
Yes - I did have one - but found that for me, using the plain old-fashioned seam ripper worked well - although it is a fun gadget and does the job! Thanks for sharing!!!

You're so welcome! Be sure to go slowly when you first try it out and use scraps. Once you get good at it, you'll never hold a seam ripper any other way. I try to slow down at the seam intersections, but then it takes just seconds to rip out a seam. Thanks for watching!

Wow!!! I could have used this tip years ago!! Brilliant! I even have that exact seam ripper!! My only issue with it is that the lid part does not fit on the end of the ripper so you can’t keep the pieces together while you are ripping! I always end up having to search for the top part-which I will now use since I know what it is for!!! Thank you!!
Yes - that is a flaw. They now make one with the eraser part on each end. It's called the Double Sided Seam Ripper.

An easier method, for me, is to simply use a lint roller to remove the unwanted thread. And it quickly cleans up the mess that was made throughout the process.

I’m not sure when I learned this but it was years ago and it usually works well but keep in mind it’s not always that easy. The other thing I wanted to mention is that I always use a pencil eraser to remove the threads and I’m also addicted to my lint roller, the tape kind works best!
I think putting it under the sewing machine foot really does make it so much easier. Not sure if you tried that, but it gives the added tension needed to cut the threads and not the fabric. Many also use the pencil eraser or lint roller. All great options! Thank you for sharing and for watching!
The unpicker is one of my most used tools. In fact I have several. Use it carefully though as this method is really only good for fabrics that are sturdy. 😂😂
In quilting I use 100% cotton and it works well for those types of fabric. When it comes to knits and stretchy fabrics this would not be something I would recommend. Thanks for your insight and thanks for watching!

Not sure where you went wrong, but I have never cut through anything but my stitches using this method. It does take a little practice, and I went very slowly when I first started using my seam ripper this way but I have had EXCELLENT results. Sorry you had a mishap.
