I first listened to this version when it was included in Guitar Hero 3. This is 100% the same version from the 2007 Remaster.
They had to have re-release with the knowledge that Punk was returning. No doubt about it.
This is how it sounds live, so I’m sure every recording after 1988 would sound like this version
What’s crazy is the only reason this version exists is because they couldn’t find the master tapes to implement the OG song onto the game (in high quality). So rather than skip the song, the band opted to re-record it with (at the time) modern tech

Sony (the ones who owned the og version) wanted way too much money so Living Colour rerecorded it so Activision didn't have to pay Sony and instead Living Colour got a bigger cut of the money because they cutout the middle guy. I wonder if the same thing happened here.

No. Living Colour gave CM Punk all rights to use this song. He used it in WWE in his first tenure
The original song is licensed by Sony, the re recording is owned by Living Color, so it was probably easier to license the new version on such short notice.

@@raymondmadrid I'm pretty sure In Living Color re-recorded it to get the rights back from the production company. Taylor Swift did similar recently where she redid all her old albums to get them back. They might be doing them a favor using this version to make sure they're getting the royalties from it rather than the big wigs.

Did they Remaster 'Cult of Personality' especially fir CM Punk? Or was it just a timed convenience for both the band and the WWE/Punk? I'm pretty sure I heard that they remastered the whole album, or a few different songs at least, but I wonder if the intention to remaster this song was to give Punk a fresh variation for his return?.
