One tip I learned about cleaning burners is to sand the face of the burners with 120 grit sand paper. Nothing too heavy. The face of the burners is the ground path for the flame sensor. Any carbon or dirt on the face won't allow the micro amp current to flow through the flame sensor to ground.
I know people must appreciate having a professional who actually can repair their unit. Too many people just want to sell a new unit and don't even try to diagnose a problem. Thanks for all you do . I live in Texas so don't have to deal with severe cold -- most years! I am watching because my gas furnace just quit -- three days after it had its annual cleaning. Now waiting on home warranty contractor to advise on unit. He said metal induction fan failed and he found crack in heat exchanger! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Kind of reminded me when working on my gas dryer, the glow wire lit but the pilot would not stay on. Took the gas valve out of the dryer, after checking everything, I found a ball of lint in the tube leading to the pilot from the gas valve. That was 30 years ago, still runs.
Honest guy. Charges for parts and labor. Always attemps to fix it no matter how old your unit is. Who has 20 thousand dollars for a new unit? There are a lot of crooks out here in the hvac trade.
I do the same thing. I spend a lot of extra time explaining things to customers. Sometimes an hour or more. It always gets me more work, sometimes really big jobs. It's so important to build an honest relationship with customers.
you forgot to write down on Saturday that you Replaced the IGNITER...lol...great Video Steven!!! enjoyed every thing you did there. Now go get Miss Molly a Hard Hat and Tool Belt...
Holy moly, put a new fan motor in it and he will have a brand new furnace. When it rains it pours. Talk about a weekend shit show. This one came with an encore.
The major issue is the furnace is in a closet, someone did the same thing at my grandmas house for the 2nd and 3rd floor ac unit when there’s cubbies in the attic that would’ve been a better option, it has a slow refrigerant leak in the line set and they pretty much told her wait til it dies to move it. 5 years later still going just needs a charge every spring
I like converting old downflow mobile home furnaces to Goodman downflow 96%'ers. Just take the PVC vent pipe right up inside the double wall and out the top of the cap. Screw and glue a witches cap on the penetration, done. Thanks for the video, Steve!
It's probably tough for these types of customers. Even if they're really good people. Because he's a Dr he probably thinks that everyone is going to take advantage of him. Believe me some scumbags out there would too. He dosen't have to worry about that when Steve Lav is on the job.
Whoa, when that closet door is closed, how can the AIR get into the Furnace for combustion?.. I guess it Does get in there but wow, what a tight fit for air to flow under the door...
At 6:25 The chimney needs a down draft damper because if you let that inducer run backwards all the time, it will need to be replaced prematurely. Plus if the water heater ducts at the same place and a down draft is present, you will get carbon monoxide build up when furnace is not running. Only good part about seeing an inducer run backwards is that you know the chimney is not blocked.
This furnace is an upflow furnace installed upside down. Huge liability! Looks like an early Goodman/Janitrol. . A downflow furnace would have the burners near the floor and the inducer above the burners. The rollout switches would be above the burners, or on the sides, not on the bottom. Many times the flue pipe comes through the blower compartment and exhausts through the top, or the blower compartment is recessed behind the vent pipe. Unbelievable.
The flame rollout switch would never get hot enough to shut down the furnace. Open burners could scorch that wood door, cause a fire or an explosion. How the heck does this thing breathe? Open burners draw in room air for combustion. That furnace should have never been installed in that cramped closet. Unsafe at any temperature.
I thought the closet door was louvered but it's not. Goodman supplier tried to send me an up flo to turn upside down on a gas heat application. Made them find a down draft wasn't gonna answer to my customer for that.
My smart gas valve became dumb about a week ago. Fortunately the company I was under contract for a new furnace on Feb 8th came out on Sunday morning and determined that the whole furnace needed replaced. I got a call from them the next day, they moved my install date up to Thu Jan 20th. I'm onto a new carrier furnace now and have heat!!
on today's episode of Lady and the Tramp, featuring Miss Molly as Lady and Steve as Tramp... we fix an Older Gas Furnace.. :D (you better be laughing Steve!) lol
How can that install possibly pass code for combustion air requirements? The combustion intake is right against the door. Plus, is the return air drawing inside the closet too? Maybe CO into the return and flame rollout! 5 star master keyboard tech here. I must be missing something, but that seems crazy mama!
the capacitor is to offset the effect of motor drawing too much current when it starts, unless the motor has soft start. The closest analogy is it acts like a buffer tank or anti hammer valve.
I would love to only have to travel half an hour for work. Unfortunately part of working for a big shop is going where the work is. Usually I'm right at an hour commute.
Nice clean tune up. Good thing you caught it.👍🥃🏌🍇🥃🍺🍺 Stay safe. Retired keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses. P.S stock the truck with nitrides (glowfly)
My favorite type of customer. A doctor. Wants to know everything, questions everything. Should have a new unit, buy rebuilds a Goodman from the 90s in a closet that’s probably starving for return air. Bet they have a real nice Grohe faucet in the kitchen, though. Meh hahahahaha
Does anyone have any information on the digital round dial large display number wall thermostat shown at 40:28 like the make or model number by chance? Thanks
Other guys are stuck on stupid. Lmao. Steve. Dont sugar coat the shit show bro. Keep’em coming!! Great job. Oh and blow the yellows. Peeps need the heat.
I have the exact same furnace except it's not upside down or in a closet. I have replaced ever single part on it except the gas valve which is in the mail as I speak. It won't stay lit as well. Everyone lights as expected but when the fan kicks on the flames go out.. the fan runs for a bit and the furnace relights itself right when the fan shuts off because it's cooled down .. it lights up.. fan kicks on.. flame goes out. This happens 4/5 times before it stays lit. I replaced flame sensors, caps, the whole circuit board, inducer motor, inducer sensor switch, ignitor, cleaned my burners... Everything except the gas valve. I know I could have replaced the furnace for about the same cost but I now have a new furnace once I replace the gas valve.
One tip I learned about cleaning burners is to sand the face of the burners with 120 grit sand paper. Nothing too heavy. The face of the burners is the ground path for the flame sensor. Any carbon or dirt on the face won't allow the micro amp current to flow through the flame sensor to ground.
Its awesome how u explain everything of what ur doing to the customer.. I've learned a lot from watching your videos.
Steve the plumber discussing medicinal/drug efficacies with a cardiologist. Won't get that on other plumber channels. Gotta love it!!
One kind of plumber talking to another kind of plumber...
@@neonhomer So true! And they both treat "cholesterol".
The furnace might need a stint, a bypass, and a pacemaker!
In my State of Washington.. that closet where the furnace is has a plain door, my State to meet code the door has to be louvered for air circulation.
I just mentioned that too
Holy smokes we finally found something Steve didn't have in the truck!

What a great in-depth video Steve! From one gas tech to another..... keep up the great work. Love the videos
Hi Steve and Molly. Many regards to the both of you. Thank you for the upload!
The cap provides a phase shift to create a rotating magnetic field to spin the motor. The sizing balances out the current through the windings.
Kind of reminded me when working on my gas dryer, the glow wire lit but the pilot would not stay on. Took the gas valve out of the dryer, after checking everything, I found a ball of lint in the tube leading to the pilot from the gas valve. That was 30 years ago, still runs.
You made it through the light, Steve you always make it.
See this is why I love Steve. He takes the time and explains things. And he's not out to get rich . Honestly job for Honest pay..

Another great job by Steve!
Steve’s Service truck 🛻 always supplying parts saves so much time and money .
Great job there Steve. Like your work ethic.
you forgot to write down on Saturday that you Replaced the IGNITER...lol...great Video Steven!!! enjoyed every thing you did there. Now go get Miss Molly a Hard Hat and Tool Belt...
Good going Steven.
Nice views of the water there.
Steve you the man I'm a plumber of 16 yrs and about to beg for a ride along with the uncle to learn me some hvac I'm hooked o the videos

Nice retro fit on that valve Steve, 👍

Have installed a humidifier on a down flow furnace with ac??
Thanks
The capacitor boosts the start circuit on the blower motor, or start winding.

Whoa, when that closet door is closed, how can the AIR get into the Furnace for combustion?.. I guess it Does get in there but wow, what a tight fit for air to flow under the door...
In California you need to have vents to attic and/or crawl space/basement for combustion air. Need several inches of clearance on all sides.
Good golly,Ms Molly!

Great video Steve, I just put in a new furnace and Bosch heat pump today now home watching you, love it momma
Tell the heart Doc the cap is the pace maker for the blower fan
That's like a mobile home furnace and he should have a vent in the door. Surprised it's not code there. Great videos.
Steven lavimonier I like your utube videos

I wondered why it looked odd 😂 its upside down!! Working against the laws of physics 😃
omg you can't make this stuff up!
Some furnaces are multi positional and you actually flip them upside for a down flow application
@@ryanduhaime9086 ok im not a hvac man. Just seemed like heat rising into the heat exchanger would be the natural way to do things.

Time and a half on Saturday Molly !
An E Violn String used to work good to clean the piolet on Chicken Brooders.

Great job and video like always (Steven)
the CAP charges from the battery power of the meter, As it is preforming its measurement function.
3:06 Ive had the gamber stuck in my head and I go to watch this video and what do I find 😂😂
Thumbs up!

This is a keep your ass busy job. Nice work Steve..
Yellow means go faster, and you can't stop a Goodman, even if it's upside down!
Whenever I go through a red light like that I just act like I’m adjusting the radio or the Ac 😂
the capacitor is to offset the effect of motor drawing too much current when it starts, unless the motor has soft start. The closest analogy is it acts like a buffer tank or anti hammer valve.
Hey Steve what tools do you carry with you on a routine service call for a gas furnace fix.? Thanks for the great informative educational videos.!!!
Rock N Roll !!!
I would love to only have to travel half an hour for work.

Same here. I live on the east coast of Florida but work in Orlando which is a 60+ minute drive.
Hi Steve from Long Island good job
Nice clean tune up.
Good thing you caught it.👍🥃🏌🍇🥃🍺🍺

Miss Molly got her work sweater on, she's ready to work.
Nice turtles..
Houston we have ignition.
my god mama thought there were gators in New England turne out to be turtles!!!
Do You have to cover the radiator on Your truck to get the heater to work like the Big truck drivers?
That furnace isnt installed right. Usually all 80% downflows have the burners on the bottom and inducer on top.
what brand is the sink basis you use Steve
Morning Steve
That is in upside down, isn't it?
The "Old Goodman" needed a lot of preventive maintenance.
pretty sure its code here that the closet door must be louvered or have a grill on it for combustion air.
can you explain why there is a solid door ( no vent ) that closes this in .....
A little bit of liquid soap (or spit) goes a long way.
Avon. That’s a hike
Love your molly
Those furnaces are everyday here.
If you have time?
I like some information on the multi position furnace with ac for a modular home?
Thanks.
What kind of thermastat was that?

if that unit had to come out of that closet man homeowner is going to feel that in his pocket
Hey Steven, what did you have to bend to get the gas pipes to line up at 34:55? Looks like you edited out the part where you likely did some cursing 😁
it was tighter then 2 coats of paint
I see you always put in oem igniters. How about the glofly or hot rod universal igniters?
It's a good thing the guy's a cardiologist. What'd this one cost, $1200 ?
Does what you call a complete tune, plugs, wire, etc
Does anyone have any information on the digital round dial large display number wall thermostat shown at 40:28 like the make or model number by chance? Thanks
Always an adventure
Steve got six thumbs down for running that red light. 😂
ya go figure lol
Turtle meat I love it
👍👍👍
It’s off to Molly-wood, she’s workin’ again y’all! Hey Steve! 👍👍.
I agree with you. Seems like a louvered door would allow more make-up air to feed the burners.
Steve , why did they install that furnace upsidedown
5:08 why is that yellow sign upside down ?
I'm no plumer but that boiler is definitely upside down
You don't want No Leaka Momma.
That igniter looked pretty bad Steve. I am surprised it worked at all.
If everyone had 3 phase power, You wouldn't need Capacators.
That's no cheap repair.
Eventually the motor will sit there and burn itself up if it goes bad.
I would keep in good with that guy. Never know when you will need a good heart doctor. :) You fix his furnace and he could fix your ticker.
Other guys are stuck on stupid.
Lmao. Steve. Dont sugar coat the shit show bro. Keep’em coming!! Great job.
Oh and blow the yellows. Peeps need the heat.
I'm curious to know what you charged this man for all of this work?
500.00 to 600.00. Maybe more Steve had to go get the valve he replaced the capacitor, igniter and gas valve. 700.00 max.
All text is upside down haha
13 miles will not even get across town here!
now it will work another 100 year
