- Two pensioners are seeking to take the Scottish and UK governments to court over the cut to the winter fuel payment. Peter and Florence Fanning have raised proceedings against the Scottish government and the UK work and pensions secretary over the policy. The couple will lose out on the winter fuel payment this year and say they are worried about the implications on their health.

No it isn't discrimination. There's going to be a budget at the end of the month which will reveal further cuts and tax increases that will affect everybody. The pensioners haven't been singled out its just the winter fuel cut had to be announced ahead of the budget so peoole were fully prepared. me too , but in my case i had the warmhome allowance robbed off me , due to moved goal posts ,thats £150 worth so a total of £450 iv had thieved off me !

Lots of pensioners and disabled people have lots of health problems. If the government does not reinstate cold weather payment pensioners and disabled will have to choose between heat or eat. If elderly are admitted into the hospital, NH S have more strain on the budget.

I dont own a cooker anymore i use a one ring camping cooker my radiators are turned off at the wall i refuse to make the enegy companies richer thier charges are higher than my usage
I bought a camping stove, but it sets the carbon alarm off even tho I have a window open so I can’t use it🙄
If the government were to simply appy the fuel allowance based on a level of tax you pay. It would prevent higher income pensioners from receiving the fuel allowance. Come on, this is not rocket science.
Not that simple as pensioners that retired after April 2016 can flexible access their benefits. Meaning they can change the income they take from their private or work pension to be under the higher tax threshold and thus qualify for winter fuel allowance, which does take into account cash savings or how much their pension or other assets are worth. You could end up in a situation where a millionaire could be taking an income of below £12,570 from their pension and end up paying no tax and claiming WFA

I would prefer a campaign to get the energy companies to scrap daily charges, that are higher than my electricity usage.
Even if pensioners have an extra pension it can still be less than the living wage.

Forget about a year . How much does it cost per day in a hotel food medical care legal aid security etc. 1 irregular migrant upkeep will pay the £150 winter fuel to a single person

Ahh, Labour DID carry out such an assessment a few years ago when the Conservative government toyed with the idea of taking away the fuel allowance from wealthier pensioners. Labour robustly showed that such action was unconscionable because it would affect the poorest and the infirm.

I’m an English pensioner and when they said cut the allowance I thought about the difference in climate between England and Scotland it’s freezing in winter up there I’ve witnessed it so a cut means different things to us and our Scottish cousins and like he said no assessment at all

its ok the pensions going up, but that will put a number of people over the top for some of the benefits that they do get, so for example it could reduce the benefit they get for their rent , also adding another stretch on their already tight disposable income.
We are already paying tax on ours and will only end up paying more and we are not on

My young neighbour next door admittedly she works in a shop for a few hrs aday, 5 days a week, she has her heating on most nights, puts the washing on 2-3 times aweek uses a tumble dryer, and she says she pays about £35 a month on electricity and about the same on gas, she’s with octopus and has told me to switch to them as their pricing is good.
We arę behind them all the way.

Well done, also it's not just losing the benefit but just had our bill in from EDF and it's going up by £800 from October 1st. We owe nothing at the moment, but our DD will be £217 a month,we live of my husband pension, no benefits.

Even if he has a private pension it’s probably a couple of hundred a month , so I doubt they are flowing in cash every month, this government are cruel and evil towards the elderly , it’s obvious they would like them all to pass away so they wouldn’t have their pensions being paid at all. Evil lot.
