  • Professor Bart D. Ehrman joins the Smithsonian Associates at the S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington, DC on Saturday, February 10, 2018 - 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity set in motion a transformation with little equal in the history of Western civilization. A movement that began within a small group of illiterate day-laborers in a remote corner of the empire took fire, and within four hundred years half the population of the empire had converted. Christianity became the official religion of Rome and, eventually, the most significant political, cultural, and social force in history. The lecture is immersed with content from Bart's book "The Triumph of Christianity: How A Forbidden Religion Swept the World."

    I am a big fan of Dr. Ehrman. In the era of universal deceit, it is hard to find a person with Intellectual Integrity.
    Three years ago, I woke up one morning and said to myself "I have been in USA for the last 32 years & have heard a lot about Jesus & Bible, but I do not know anything about them”. I started my reading and study, on the 2nd week I saw Bart in UA-cam. I have read three of his books and I think I have seen all Bart’s UA-cam videos. Thank you for posting this new video.

    If the resurrection of the dead means you can't escape judgement by dying, and yet those who side with the forces of evil are destroyed, what is gained? How is being destroyed any different from remaining dead? (There is an obvious answer if destruction is not instantaneous, but I'm asking what apocalypticists such as Paul would have thought.)

    All are born chosen, good, connected to God, in God's image, to do good on earth. Likewise, all can reconnect (rise again) and have eternal life with God. Best to do it while on earth. Faith and good works (good choices resulting from good beliefs. Start praying, reading, listening, attending, and do good works.

    • @heatherb812
      @heatherb812 4 роки тому +5

      But praying to which god? Attending what? Any way you look at it, there are a lot of people in trouble because they just happened to be born in the wrong community, in the wrong country, in the wrong part of the world, that worships the wrong god(s), or no god(s) at all. If the Christian god were omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and loving and MERCIFUL as Christians claim, then he would have known to send his Messiah to every country on earth to save its people from eternal suffering.
      Or does everyone get to have eternal life with god in spite of what they believe here on earth?
      And why was Israel Yahweh’s chosen people? If god created all of mankind, why did he not reveal himself to every nation, village, and individual at some point in history? Why does he rely on fallible sinners and humans with limited memory and knowledge to spread the word through third-person accounts? Why have there been thousands of religions over multiple millennia that worship other gods? Why did Yahweh not choose EVERYONE? Because Israel adopted Yahweh, the Canaanite war god, as their primary god millennia ago, and they taught that Yahweh has selected THEM - that THEY were special, and he would protect them and see them prosper? Which, by the way, is a great morale booster and nationalistic tactic to unite a nation.
      I think it’s great for people to do good works, to help others, to better communities for generations to come. And the best part about it is you don’t need to subscribe to any sort of religion or religious practices to do so! Every person in existence is capable of being a kind and considerate human being, and you don’t need to pray, read ancient texts, or attend a church, temple, synagogue, or mosque to do so, if that sort of thing isn’t for you.

    I have deep respect for Dr. Ehrman and his work has helped me sort out my religious faith. My ultimate quest was/is to understand the real Jesus of Nazareth.
    I wonder if Dr. Ehrman has worked too hard to negate the empty tomb scenario. IMO, history that is remembered is remembered many times because what happened at a given point in time was unusual. The gospels, having women first find/view the empty tomb, indicates there is a basis in truth since women and the testimony of women were not valued in that patriarchal society.
    Keeping the discussion at the historical level, a number of researchers have detailed things that were unusual or extremely unusual concerning the arrest, trial and execution of Jesus of Nazareth. I think therefore, burial in a tomb following crucifixion which was sometimes done according to other research, is possible.
    From there, the experiences people had with the resurrected Jesus, may indeed be the driving force behind the continuation of Jesus´ ministry, rather than the empty tomb on Sunday morning. That said, I see no reason why, anecdotally, there could not have been an empty tomb and memories of such relayed by women who were present.
    If the ministry, arrest, trial, execution and disposition of remains was mundane in the case of Jesus of Nazareth, I think we would know far less. Many men at the time were crucified, etc. I think there were enough unusual happenings in relation to Jesus that the pure historical events would have been remembered, at least locally, for some time afterward.

    • @stuartc9149
      @stuartc9149 5 років тому +2

      I'm not sure that 'working too hard' to negate the empty tomb makes much sense. Plenty of mainstream historians don't hold with the whole trial and crucifixion narrative. And the idea if an empty tomb doesn't concur with what is known about Roman crucifixion practice. It's simply historically improbable. I think Ehrman agrees with you that what was important to the early followers was their experience, or perceived experience, of the resurrection, and he deals with that in some depth. To the extent that those experiences were unusual forms the basis of their consequent belief system. I think Ehrman's analysis is into to what extent that resurrection experience is historically versimil and to what extent it was a result of the psychological shock of their leader being inexplicably removed and killed. And that is something Ehrman has addressed in depth

    • @stuartc9149
      @stuartc9149 5 років тому +2

      What do we really know about the ministry, arrest, trial and execution that isn't mundane? Certainly nothing in Josephus, Philo or any other source suggests that they were in any way remarkable. There are only the gospel narratives which are contradictory, riddled with inconsistencies and embellishments and do not correspond with what else is known or reality. So from the Nativity, works, trial, execution, empty tomb, resurrection there is almost nothing or substance that can be substantiated and we are left with an apocalyptic, messianic preacher who was executed by the Romans - carbon copies of which exist n abundance - around whom a whole religion grew, for idiosyncratic reasons.

For an overall motive for the history of the West and its churches the greed is the best candidate. As long so history itself is about the things what have been happening. Eye witness testimony is some of the worst testimony in the history of mankind. The miracle of the sun is a good example. 30,000 to 40,000 people claimed the Sun to have careened towards the Earth before zig-zagging back to its normal position. We know this isn't true because it's impossible according to the present physics we know and also no one else reported this over the whole world. So eye witness testimony isn't good and then on top of it, we have no idea who any of these people were.

      Paul is a trader that went to any side that was cushier and easier for him creating an example template for modern Elites , Black Nobility , Popes pretending to be the IDOL of god who may put crowns on Kings creating the “ RULE OF DIVINE KINGS” by appointment instead of Popular ELECTION.. now we have Vatican which made sure ROME never fell by instigating a race war between people trying to follow 1 way but finding them selves with 40,000 types of ways which is IDOLATRY that is now falling because we as humanity finally woke up and realized that all forbidden books of truth have always been a light to Jews that lead them as they awaited this prophetic time spoken of in Torah a holy book against which many nations fought and now coming back to it for clarity and proof of how badly the word of god was corrupted by traders and conquered minds of amazing humanity which deserves more then Elite Mind Control Propaganda of Black Nobility Elites.
      I’m a survivor of Russian slavery which never went away but we escaped in the night leaving all behind but family and lived in many countries with hope of freedom which was enough when food was not and took us to heaven we call USA and would die for this country because we know how privileged we truly are after god showed us the way and lead us out of our Babylon.
      This Holy Man Prof. Ehrman is what we call a “TZSADIK” who becomes Anointed aka CHRIST which is a holy king of spirit leading in service to others as service to self which is the #1 rule for Hebrew Kings, True Royals who Greeks called CHRISTOS which is a title made in to a last name which is IDOLATRY IN ITS PUREST FORM.
      the key is comparing Esus of GAMORA to Jesus Christ and knowing that these events where pushed back 40 years by the FLAVION - HEROD - ALEXANDERS VIA SOL AKA PAUL AKA JOSEPHUS the master propaganda minister of FLAVION Dynasty which lead us to Today, the age of knowing VS believing .. I hope it was not too confusing. Bless your heart.
      I am a Jewish Survivor lead by love of all 🙏🔥🦚. Shalom , Baruch HaShem.

      The verse that began trinity and idolatry I have explained, and take my explanation, BEfore Hell Fire BEfalls on you, while you are heedless O! Christians. You changed the (WORD) (BE) with Jesus, and the result of that Christians BEcame idol worshippers.
      Deuteronomy 4:22 You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
      In the beginning was the (WORD) i.e (BE), meaning the (WORD) (BE) GoD uses in the beginning of every creation. And the (WORD) i.e (BE) was with GoD, meaning (BE) is an attribute of GoD. And the (WORD) i.e (BE) was GoD, meaning every attribute of GoD is GoD. In Genesis 1:3 And God said, "Let there (BE) light," and there was light. Jesus was NOT the (WORD) (BE), but GoD created him with the (WORD) (BE). When they say Jesus proceeded from the father, it really means GoD said Jesus (Be) and Jesus became.

    I’m sorry that Bart thinks so Highly of Paul. The People of the Way who were his Contemporaries did not think Highly about him at all.
    The People of the Way were the same Jewish group that hid the Dead Sea Scrolls. In the Scrolls Paul is mentioned as being an extremely bad person, probably based on how Paul persecuted them and how Paul preached a totally different message of the Christ. Paul was looked upon as a Liar and Deceiver.
    In the Scriptures one can glean that there was a great animosity between Paul and the Leaders of the Church, James, Peter and John. That was because Paul preached a totally different message than what the Christ taught. If you bother to read Paul’s Epistles not once does he refer to any of the Christ’s teachings.
    James gave all of the Apostles a Certificate authorizing them to Preach the Word. Paul was never given one of those and he was questioned about that which infuriated him. Paul was never Voted to being an Apostle but was self appointed.

    Bart still does not understand Christianity or the reason for religion. The reason for this is he does not understand "transcendent consciousness" or the knowing of that which goes beyond birth and death. He does not believe that such understanding is even possible though the ancient and some of the modern world have reference to this experience in many many places. He keeps trying to reduce all to mythical literature of that which he does not understand. It is not possible to understand the success of Christianity with out understanding it's mystical context and that context is not just going to heaven it is also the experience of heaven in ones life. The Bliss is real and not a product of a collection of people at some church but an internal experience often deemed a form of madness by the world and an experience had by some saints in their caves, as has been reported. He does not understand the unspeakable name of God or why it would be unspeakable in fact as opposed to some rule.
    Bart is a Moody Bible literalist and always will be so. He sees conversion and baptism as a social "belief" structure as do most evangelicals.

I would like to see if you have any literature/authors you would suggest that speak on the history of Christianity, and the church. First, beginning with Paul to now where we are. So saturated with information, “religion”, denominational disunity, and ambiguity in the Church.

    Paul wasn't teaching actual descendants of heathens. He was teaching the scattered Israelites, who became as heathens and were scattered among the nations as a punishment. Has anyone ever even read the prophecies? Everyone thinks they know so much when they know so little.
    Romans 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
    It says all Israel shall be saved, not all nations and all manner of heathens. Turn away ungodliness from Jacob, not Esau and Canaan.

    The way he talk about christianity and the inconsistency on the new testament, it does sound like he really fully believes in christianity. May be if he wants a consistent and reliable religion, he should convert to Judaism. The Dead Sea scrolls prove that the Torah has come down to today uncorrupted, but the new testament changes at each major copy

    Sounds like a Jewsih Rabbi/son of a Rabbi that made an effort to become a new testament scholar and masquerade as an athiest/agnostic to divert people away from Christianity because of all the evil that has been done in the name of Christianity. True Apostolic Christianity hasnt existed for atleast over 1500 years from what we know. Paul wasnt the only one who agreed about the delineation between the old covenant law and new covenant law pf the spirit. They all were in consensus Acts 15. Most scholars just dont understand what the Apostles all knew about where the delineation is and why. Almost every Christian Church in the world doesnt umderstand wat the law of the spirit means in practice Romans 8:2.

    The problem with you Bart you do not believe that the gospel is the power of God for those who believe. There are folks whose lives has been transformed through out centuries by hearing receiving and believing the simple message of the gospel . The gospel message is simple . God the creator in Christ Jesus his blessed Son has come in to the world to give life. The life which Adam our precursor lost in the Garden These doesn't make sense to you probably because you don't believe that you're in need of this life. You're just a scholar . You don't have any experience of the saving transforming power of the message of the cross. You may joke about it because you've not been touched by the saving power of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

      Paul Stephens having listened to his testimony several times I’d say he was as “dyed in the wool” as you are and I was. I likewise came out of Christianity but found my home in Judaism rather than Atheism. He never comments negatively on belief but instead presents the history. You probably will not like the Jesus program on the History Channel either as they likewise have a historian on board who points out some of the problems with the Greek Scriptures. The Bible warns us against following after our eyes or hearts which lead us astray. I respect Bart and thoroughly enjoy his videos. I dare say you won’t find his level of respect for Christianity in many other atheists
