I'd actually rank the Kluex Avatar pretty high: nice selection of attacks, somewhat memorable design and it adds to the mystery of Kluex since it could still be anything from a fancy robot to an actual god wielding elemental magic. Conversely the Bone Dragon is "just a dragon(-shaped robot)" and isn't even much of a threat if not for the ongoing waves of cultists. Like what the heck, I thought we beat them back already? The top spot has to go to Big Ape. Intriguing lore implications, genuinely challenging fight (bit of a gotcha when the projectors heal though) and a truly epic boss theme.
Big Ape is a meh boss because the projectors regenerate when you destroy one, meaning you often waste some of your attacking time if you don't have the mental fortitude and reflexes to keep an eye on your one targeted projector at all times. tbh it would be better if three of the projectors had a shield on them and one didn't, just so it lets you know you're supposed to take the projectors down one at a time instead of spreading your damage out. Bone Dragon has 1 main attack which is "molotov on the ground." AKA wide area denial. Cheap and boring, a dreadful slog at the end of an already dreadful slog. Kluex Avatar is good mechanically; the attacks are all forecast very well and aren't unfair, and it plays on the *weak* 4 elements theme that the temple had going. In the end, though, it's just a mysterious robot that cycles through elemental attacks. I'm with Randomise on this one; it's no more memorable than the other robot enemies in the temple. Avian lore is half "aww our wings broke" and half "red crystals do magic 4no raisins" and the temple and boss are firmly 4no raisins magic crystals.
0:50 "This is a boss you'll swear at" I remember when the Shockhopper was the "final boss" and was ridiculously difficult even with tier 6 armor and weapons. I died to that stupid bastard so many times I eventually resorted to standing in the entrance to the room so the fight couldn't trigger and shooting down at it until it died. Utterly mutilating it in the final version was one of the most therapeutic things I've ever experienced in a game.
On my 9th playthrough, I took out Shockhopper MK I with only lvl 2 armor, Tungsten shotgun (Craftable if you're playing as the Novakid race), lvl 2 rocket spear and blink explosion sword.
Everyone talking about the kluex avatar and big ape, why does no one like Asra Nox? It's a boss fight where you have to learn the attacks and how to counter them, and it's actually a challenge, only second to the Ruin. Actual story, leader of the cultists, etc. It was annoying at first, but after that, it's a fun boss fight. It's a bit of a difficulty spike, but i think thats fine, the game needs more difficulty.
Asra was ridiculously easy. The only challenging attack she had was her Distortion Sphere, and even then you'll find that walking is enough to avoid it, usually. It's a fantastic concept for a fight though, to fight someone essentially equal to you in capability yet still with slightly stronger attacks. It feels like you're barely holding your own, even if she does go down like a bitch.
You get a spiked sphere and sit on the wall until last Asra's last move, and when it starts you just roll on the ground to the one side, that is the whole strat for this boss

I especially like how Asra uses souped-up versions of your own techs. She has powerful dash attacks, an upgraded Pulse Jump that allows her to fly for a bit, spraying kunai down while she does so, and an upgraded Distortion Sphere that lets her ram you. She even runs out of energy, becoming vulnerable. It really is like fighting an equal to yourself. I see how you made the connections to Metal Sonic. Like they say, shit always gets real when the boss is the same size as you. I quite liked the Kluex Avatar, but it wasn't anything special. Just felt like another magic statue thingy that wants to kill you, except this one likes his PK Freeze and magic bullets. His second form was fairly fun, though. The Bone Dragon just felt like he wasn't complex enough. All he did was chuck fireballs at you. Maybe if he did some charge attacks or rained fire down or had more attacks, I'd like him more. Especially after the glorious, bullet hell-slinging, dagger-staring, energy-fisting, utterly fantastic -Bootleg Andross- Big Ape. Ixodoom was fun, but that's about it. -Those goddamn larva are annoying as hell- Erchius Horror was imposing, but not really all that cool after the first couple of goes. He was pretty easy though, especially if you grabbed the Pulse Jump beforehand. Shockhopper MK1 is easy. As long as you avoid his punches, heal off damage from his flamethrower and that freaking lightning attack, and chip away at his health constantly, you're good. Know your enemy, as they say. Dreadwing... Meh. I can't really say much besides meh. Fairly decent, but annoying and his divebombs got really cheap quite fast. As for the Ruin, he made for an epic finale, and I, unlike many, quite like final bosses with buttloads of HP, but he was pathetically easy. He hits like an irradiated dumpster going at 90 mph, sure, but his attacks are so telegraphed that it's a cakewalk to avoid them.
My favorite bosses would be: Erchius Horror: it sets the tone, it is a good starting boss, unlike anything I've fought. Amazing weapon drop too. Big Ape: A challenging fight that puts you on edge, also has some interesting implications. Kluex Avatar: Its a deviation from the regular patterns you have to learn from other bosses, also reminds me of the old avian lore. And has the best boss weapon drop. Shockcopter MK1: That dash will catch you off guard, feels like a war machine. Dreadwing: Nostalgia, back in beta, it was the first boss I've fought. Above all, it is an amazing fight. Vault Guardians: The first time I saw procedural generated bosses, they are tough and invite you to do a lot of grinding. Asra Nox: Her last attack is erratic and hard to avoid. Bone Dragon: Reminds me of the Bone Dragon we fought back in beta in Terraria style arenas, cool and appropriate design. But jeez, those cultists are annoying. Ixodoom: A deeper look into floran culture. Creepy looks. Ruin: Disappointing damage sponge. I expected more from the being that destroyed Earth. A second, mobile phase would be better.
i know its late but imagine if the ruin had a second phase like that one boss from castle crashers where you have to run as it chaces you as the planet is starting to shatter or smth
While it's difficult for me to pick a most favorite boss, I'd say that the Ruin might be my least favorite boss in the game. The whole damage sponge idea doesn't sit well with me.
I loved the ruin fight because of the soundtrack and the way it would pull enemys from diffrent planets through portals. It may be a bit spongy but it was fun :)
5:38. Penguins are interesting in starbound because they've evolved to make mech and be intelligent. They are the perfect mech pilots because of their size.
It's funny, the Kluex Avatar and Vault Guardians are my favorite bosses in the game. Both had lots of attacks to dodge, which is always something I like in bosses. The Kluex Avatar is also from my favorite mission, so I don't mind playing through it to fight him. And the randomized nature of the Guardians made me spawn in vault keys to fight them again. But hey, to each his own. (Also, the fact that Frackin' Universe adds a Shoggoth boss makes me love it even more)
I remember back in the beta when the final boss was some giant jelly monster. Now that I think about it, Dreadwing, the Bone Dragon, and the Shockhopper are the only bosses that survived from back then.
Fun Strategy regarding the Ruin, is that it's relatively to cheese lots of free damage if you bring a flying Pet with you (preferably one of those massive flying ones with random abilities, particularly if they vomit garbage or shoot kick-ass waves of ice crystals) The Monster you bring will (if not eviscerated by a lucky mega eye-laser or enemy) fly to the top of the arena and begin attacking the Ruin without retaliation, save for flying monsters that go up there to try and fight it. This both makes the fight a lot easier, as it seems monsters the Ruin spawns select a random target, that being You, Your Pet, and any of NPC Companions you bring along (or other players and THEIR pets, and NPCs), but it also adds a layer of strategy as well, since your flying beast is relatively helpless against flying monsters, being too busy fighting the boss, so you have to both deal damage to the boss yourself, but also defend your Pet from flying beasts (kind of like a miniature version of the Skeleton Dragon tower defense-thing. Of course this can be circumvented by just bringing more flying pets with you.
My favourites: Big ape-He's the only boss in the game that actually poses some kind of challenge, and is actually really cool. I find that even the ruin and bone dragon are easier than big ape. His attacks are also very varied and interesting, unlike some of the other bosses. It actually makes the fight feel intense. The only annoying thing is that big ape is extremely tanky and gets annoying in the last phase, when it's difficult to hit that final piece and the fight drags on very long. Stockhopper mk 1-This boss has a ton of cool attacks. I really like this boss for that. Least favourite bosses: Kluex avatar-Most forgettable boss ever. I completely forgot about it, then I watched this video then remembered. Ixodoom-Another boring boss. Uninteresting and bland. Other bosses: Erichus horror-It's extremely annoying the first time you fight it, after you fight it once it's extremely easy, even with a new character. It's quite unique though, just unique enough to stay out of the "least favourite bosses" list. Asra nox-A cool concept, but the boss is way too easy. Dreadwing-This boss is an interesting boss to fight. I really like the variation with this boss, it's definitely different from the others and is quite fun to fight. The ruin-For an endgame boss, this one is a disappointment. I expected a tougher boss than this. The ruin is essentially a tank that takes a long time to kill, yet does not pose much of a challenge. The most difficult part is the drop before the actual boss fight. Bone dragon-An average boss. It's quite cool, but isn't extremely interesting. It's ok in my opinion.
Asra Nox too easy? He wrecked me and my friend the first time we fought him. After you learn the attack pattern, then it's easy, but Starbound isn't really a game you play through more than once vanilla anyway. Also the Ruin has a great theme and great music, so yeah.
BioGamers My first try against asra nox, I still beat him easily. Maybe a few bandages were needed, but he wasn’t even difficult first time. The ruin may have a great theme and music, but at its core, it’s not a very good bossfight for the final boss. The first time I fought against it, I was disappointed in how easy it was. I would have expected the final boss of the game to have more varied attacks like big ape and stockhopper mk 1.
1.Big Ape - even though i dont like apex designs this is the coolest boss lorewise fightwise and designwise 2.Asra Nox - the only reason why this isn't number one is the lame dungeon of pagoda its just long an boring and u can easily get lost and dont get me started on all the water 3. Bone Dragon - sick design nice boss weapon and can be easily farmable with RPG Growth ( Mod ) 4. Kluex - For me the hardest boss atleast when you go in unprepared and you dont know/remember the attacks 5. Dreadwing - just love it 6. Shockhopper - not a fan 7. Ruins - bullet sponge easy boss but a lot of hp nothing special 8. Erchius - dungeon tougher than the boss but the design and the fact its quite unique does bump it up higher than ixodoom also a good choice for the beginner boss however ixodoom would also work 9. Ixodoom - very easy quite farmable not challenging neither is the dungeon and quite simple and boring
I found the Baron's Quest very memorable for its use of waves of enemies rather the feeling like a dungeon. But my favorite is probably The Shockhopper which I just realized is pun

i would rate the ixodoom in the middle because you usually use rocket launchers and things like that to defeat it while having to rapidly switch to rapid fire weapons to get rid of the ixoling but its the first mission with p l a n t w a i f u
theres 2 ways in fact. you have to find something that starts with grimm which is found at elder temples or shrines. Or you go through that strange floran's quest at the science outpost. And getting their is a pain in the ass unless you can solve the first riddle at ease. Which is simple if you read it clearly
The Kluex Avatar is its name? thought it was money farm :P. Played through starbound 10-20 times now and I just farm that one boss due to how easy it is, really my first fight against it I came out without being hit once. Then the next 19 storage files I let the boss hit me with different mods on the see if it can kill me. The ice spikes do the most damage if you don't look :p
is it normal that even the weakest bosses are extremely hard? i found 3 bosses now and couldn't even get them to half life. on the other hand i've played this game for 13 hours now and still dont really know what im supposed to do kinda just walking around finishing quests
Asra Nox will be much easier if you bring 2 crew members with you. Since there's no water to stop them, they'll make it to the boss with you, and their AI knows how to bash the thing
I have never found the ruin to be a long boss fight. Maybe it's just because I prefer Ferozium armor, or it might be my weapon choice. Either way, the most challenging boss in my opinion is Big Ape.
Asra Nox was easy for sure, i defeated her without too many problems first try too, but i tried playing Starbound again yesterday and she wasn't taking damage at her bad state? She also spawner cultists that you had to defeat in the little time she gave you before hitting Asra. Not possible with titanium gear that's for sure
I think Starbound's combat was pretty clunky I never really liked any of the boss fights in the game except for maybe the shockhopper. The shockhopper was actually really well designed, despite being one of the earliest bosses in the game. I suppose the Erchius Horror is also pretty cool as a boss, but my favor for it is soured by the sheer difficulty of the base it's in.
just remembered this game and seeing a picture of Big Ape sent me into a rage. Fuck that boss, i was almost crying by the time i beat it cuz of how unreasonably difficult it is. in fact, fuck all the bosses in this game, and tbh fuck the game too, like it was really boring. Literally just "Walk into this dungeon and beat a boss and get new items. Cool do that like 6 or 7 more times and you win." also the most unreasonably tanky and concentration heavy final boss ive ever seen to the point i decided to just give up and uninstall it rather than see the ending.
I wish starbound could be more than Terraria sytle, to hell with the cliche stupid predictable boring story, remove the story elements and make it open like terraria, then just keep pumping those content till you have so many bosses to fight !! seriously though, I missed the good old days of Starbound...
I killed it 3 times and i didn't pay much attention, i checked my inventory and realized i got 2 staffs from it in 3 kills. it took me 35 times for me to get the gosh-dang Solus Katana, and the drop at the beginning killed me numerous times.
I hate pretty much every boss in starbound; they all soak up too many hits, their attacks all.feel predictable and boring, and much like the story itself, i dont like having to do them all AGAIN every time i need to reset my load order due to a mod incompatability arising from automated updates. Modded bosses arent any better, either. Also, TWO giant eye bosses to deal with? Id rather drown in elder fluid. Lol.
I guess the problem with Starbound is the lack of arenas. You cannot build your own one and that was the whole charm of terrarias bosses. That´s also one of the reasons I stopped playing Starbound and went back to terraria.
Terraria bosses are on a whole other level though, I don't know if I had just gotten used to the style of gameplay by the time I got to Starbound, but there was nowhere near the level of challenge or strategy involved in Starbound bosses as with Terraria. They aren't totally devoid of challenge by any means but Terraria is seriously a step up in terms of challenge and preparation needed, and I believe it has like twice as many bosses?
Penguins are definitely the most important part of the lore of star bound.
I agree

Hey, how can you get the Frackin' Universe mission in wich you fight a shoggoth ? Because I like me some Lovecraftian horrors from time to time;
theres 2 ways in fact. you have to find something that starts with grimm which is found at elder temples or shrines. Or you go through that strange floran's quest at the science outpost. And getting their is a pain in the ass unless you can solve the first riddle at ease. Which is simple if you read it clearly
I like the Kleux Avatar because its a bird and glows, and is.. shiny... or crystally i guess lol
No boss fight gave me the amount of trouble big ape did. I used up a solid 60 nanowraps just to bring him to the last robot dingle thingy.
is it normal that even the weakest bosses are extremely hard? i found 3 bosses now and couldn't even get them to half life. on the other hand i've played this game for 13 hours now and still dont really know what im supposed to do kinda just walking around finishing quests
Fuggin love Kluex
Every time I go into a vault, I end up with an ice vault. Every. Damn. Time. I've gone to like 6 vaults upgrading my weapons
As a player of avian I’m glad to say I’m not one of them I played borderlands, and good stuff like that
Im curious where swonsong would come on this list.
Asra Nox will be much easier if you bring 2 crew members with you.
Since there's no water to stop them, they'll make it to the boss with you, and their AI knows how to bash the thing
wow you play frackin universe too? wow
6:32 whaaaat is that boss
That is a boss from a mod called Frackin' universe
Big ape is a genuine reference to the starfox final boss extra points for that there.
And also it is an obvious reference to "Big Brother " from Orwell's "1984"
I think I'd like to create more levels and bosses myself... maybe add a story of some kind. Could be cool.
I love the drop and before the boss of kluex
I have never found the ruin to be a long boss fight. Maybe it's just because I prefer Ferozium armor, or it might be my weapon choice. Either way, the most challenging boss in my opinion is Big Ape.
D: KLUEX IS FREAKING AWESOME (lava attack lol)
Asra Nox was easy for sure, i defeated her without too many problems first try too, but i tried playing Starbound again yesterday and she wasn't taking damage at her bad state? She also spawner cultists that you had to defeat in the little time she gave you before hitting Asra. Not possible with titanium gear that's for sure
I cheesed shockhopper with a Draconic race mod and Dragons Blessing.
I love every single boss
KLUEX AVATAR IS MY FAVORITE BOSS TO
I enjoy the kluex avatar because it looks appealing to me and is intimidating... until you fight it.
My favorite boss is the Heart of Ruin, but Dreadwing isn't far behind.
I think Starbound's combat was pretty clunky I never really liked any of the boss fights in the game except for maybe the shockhopper. The shockhopper was actually really well designed, despite being one of the earliest bosses in the game. I suppose the Erchius Horror is also pretty cool as a boss, but my favor for it is soured by the sheer difficulty of the base it's in.
kluex is the terraria's golem of this game. 2 stages, 2nd is flying first is grounded, boring, really easy
I got two of those shockstopper mk1 statues i beat him every time i play the game
"god I bet you play as an AVIAN don't you?"
Playing as an avian as I watch this I have one word for you. Ouch
But also I see your point XD
just remembered this game and seeing a picture of Big Ape sent me into a rage. Fuck that boss, i was almost crying by the time i beat it cuz of how unreasonably difficult it is.
in fact, fuck all the bosses in this game, and tbh fuck the game too, like it was really boring. Literally just "Walk into this dungeon and beat a boss and get new items. Cool do that like 6 or 7 more times and you win." also the most unreasonably tanky and concentration heavy final boss ive ever seen to the point i decided to just give up and uninstall it rather than see the ending.
all i used on the second boss (the spider) is a grenade launcher r launcher and spamage galore
I wish starbound could be more than Terraria sytle, to hell with the cliche stupid predictable boring story, remove the story elements and make it open like terraria, then just keep pumping those content till you have so many bosses to fight !!
seriously though, I missed the good old days of Starbound...
the starbound version of chippy gaming
Kluex avatar was wicked hard
Only true original players would know that the Jelly Boss was the best boss in the game.
The Bone Dragon was my favorite!
Playing as a penguin would improve the game
personally i would say that the glitch mission is trash but the bone dragon is my favorite boss
im novakid and i absolutely hate asra nox
I'm also a Novakid.
And If you use the ball morph and can get some decent lvl 3 or 4 sword, she's not that bad.
I keep getting bossdrops first try
Kluex avatar is such a wasted potential
Big ape is great
Bone dragon made me want to snap his femur
For me the kluex is #2
... he insulted my farvorite boss. The vault gaurdian. I luv their attacks and look. Also I hate kluex. I killed it 30 times for the statue and staff
I killed it 3 times and i didn't pay much attention, i checked my inventory and realized i got 2 staffs from it in 3 kills. it took me 35 times for me to get the gosh-dang Solus Katana, and the drop at the beginning killed me numerous times.
im a avian player problem?
I hate pretty much every boss in starbound; they all soak up too many hits, their attacks all.feel predictable and boring, and much like the story itself, i dont like having to do them all AGAIN every time i need to reset my load order due to a mod incompatability arising from automated updates. Modded bosses arent any better, either.
Also, TWO giant eye bosses to deal with? Id rather drown in elder fluid. Lol.
There are allot of mini bosses that are harder than the main bosses one is in a secret room in the final quest.
You may need need different classes to get there too
Sure, Jan. We believe you
shockhopper is easy
asra is a woman
I guess the problem with Starbound is the lack of arenas. You cannot build your own one and that was the whole charm of terrarias bosses. That´s also one of the reasons I stopped playing Starbound and went back to terraria.
Well Starbound doesn't lack Arenas, each boss has it's own arena. You just lack the ability to make your own arenas for the fight.
Terraria bosses are on a whole other level though, I don't know if I had just gotten used to the style of gameplay by the time I got to Starbound, but there was nowhere near the level of challenge or strategy involved in Starbound bosses as with Terraria. They aren't totally devoid of challenge by any means but Terraria is seriously a step up in terms of challenge and preparation needed, and I believe it has like twice as many bosses?
before we had missions, you can spawn them everywhere.
imo asra nox is the worst boss
