I was one of the first pre-orders as a hobbyist. Soon as I seen it, I was in, shut up and take my money type of energy. As a tech enthusiest, I always thought the measuring equiptment was very outdated in comparison to the way other tools adopted simple technology. Can't wait to get mine, even if I will only use it for a hobby. If it is durable, it would be a game changer for carpenters, especially rough in work and framing.

Is there a way you can add notes to measurements sent to the App? I'm thinking about how it would be nice to measure multiple rooms for baseboards but if there were outside miters you would need to be able to distinguish which measurements required the miters.

I'm so glad you are covering this! As a trim carpenter I would have killed for me and my team to have one of these! Do you know how much faster a 3 man crew could knock out a house if you cut out all the walking back and forth writing down measurements etc? You have one guy go in and start measuring digitally sending the cut sheet for baseboard, window casing, door casing etc right to the guy at the saw, the third guy gets to work staging material for the cut guy then installing as soon as he has enough material cut to knock out a room.

I do maintenance in a machine shop. So I'm using a tape measure constantly whether it's spacing 50 ft tall shelving units for a space or measuring walls for drywall or measuring grass for fence posts or measuring little pieces of material to make patches for broken metal or measuring desktop tools so I know how big to make a table for it, then making the table for it, or measuring isles to make sure new machines will fit through, or measuring huge 5 ton machines and measuring the floor to get spacing right, etc. I use a tape measure constantly. So much so that on my belt at all times I have a flashlight, a mini 6 ft tape measure, and a mini laser measured with a 50 foot capability, then on my scooter I have a 25 foot tape measure and a 30 foot tape and a Bosch full size laser measurer, then on my tool cart I have probably 5 other things for taking measurements, then on my desk I have calipers, micrometers, tape measures, the edge of my desk has a metal ruler riveted to it, etc... measuring things is an enormous part of my job.. what I have been looking for started by searching for one of those all in one units that have a physical tape and laser tape in one unit. And I keep finding new toys with new features.. ultimately what I'm trying to accomplish is eliminating tools from my belt or cart or desk, etc. If I can carry around one tool instead of carrying around three tape measures and a laser measure and a level and a laser level, etc that would be amazing. This recon tomahawk looks awesome and I'm probably going to buy one just because it's cool but it's missing a couple vital features for it to be that one missing piece that I've been searching for. But I do like the fact that it has a display so you can quickly just glance at what the measurement of the tape is and then with that laser you can easily mark a straight line rather than having to make several measurements and then running a rural air across it and drawing a line. I will definitely use the tomahawk but I'm still unfortunately looking for that one magic tool.

I think it would be a great tool for the job site, whether commercial constructions or house construction. Example, on the home construction, it would speed up, instead of measure, cut, measure, cut. Or take multiple measurements and right them down one at a time. With this, you can record all you measurements, go to the saw, measure and cut them all out and mark on the green line. And if you have their previous tool for the miter saw, you read the measurement on the screen, slide the board down on the miter saw, and make the cut. It could make things quicker. For me, who works in a wood shop, it may not be applicable.

Seen a lot of hate from people who's main gripe is "You don't need this, you should know how to measure". The thing is, that's not what makes it so interesting and useful. It makes taking those measurements so much easier and faster. If the price was half as much I would buy one in an instant.

Waiting for it to show up at Lowes, Amazon or Home Depot. Hope I have better luck with this than the M1 Caliber tool for mitre saws. That one needs 6' to the right of the blade for calibration. I only have 60" before I hit the shop wall and can't move the station without a ton of rework. Hopefully they'll make a new revision that won't require such distance requirements. I took mine back to Lowe's after letting Reekon know my situation and they forwarded it to their development team.

I'm a steel fabricator and I am EXTREMELY interested in this, the only thing that truly concerns me, as stated in video, is durability. That thing would be dragging all over steel all day long, that being said, all my current tapes have the bottom sides of them quite worn. What I'm thinking is that this, with the ability to track and log measurements, may dang well be the PERFECT quality control tool for my shop. Being able to see on a digital screen when double checking measurements would be phenomenal, as we all know, 1/16ths and 1/8ths throughout the day with a million measurements bouncing around up there is quite easy to miss..

I can see the potential. As the owner and primary layout guy in the field, this will make a day of layout easier for all my mechanics to follow behind using a standard tape.
Say I’m doing siding, starting at a corner posts, running over to a window, then the opposite side of that window, followed by the center span to the next window, so on and so forth. I can give full runout measurements from 0-25’ starting from a “no visible laps” corner. Write them on the wall as I go.
And again, as the installers come back behind me, they can setup at that wall, and just look up at the measurements for their cuts. And all the proper spacing for expansion and contraction I will have already accounted for during initial layout.
Me spending a couple hours laying out walls, saving those measurements in the tape as well as writing them on the walls, makes it easy for a quick lookup, or install process for everyone behind me.

I don't see this on a "Pros" belt or in their tool bag, this is ment for the engineers or project managers hip because pros and field personnel use their tapes multiple times daily and know how to read one. If a Pro needs a very accurate measurement they'll most likely scribe it, the rest of the time close enough is good enough. Not many trades or jobs require .02" accuracy. The saved measurements is pretty awesome though. Many times I took a measurement took 2 steps away and forgot the measurement but a pen and notepad costs around $2 not $260

    1) to expensive
    2) burn thru 1 tape every 6 months
    3) job requires mental math skills
    4) pen/pad are cheap & easy for notes
    5) looks fragile/ be afraid to use daily
    6) appears to have weak stand off
    7) laser line looks super useful. If you can find a way to put that on a standard Fat Max. Have it extend out 6" both directions and make it durable enough to survive a 10' fall all for the low low price of $50 and you got yourself a sale.

Well I'm sure now there are none left. I mow lawns part time but around the house I make things like duck houses, cat houses, and other types of animal houses. My eyesight sucks so this would make things a lot easier, because I'm certainly not going to let my bad eyesight stop me. This thing is rad and I would love to get one, I think the price is worth it but I don't have the funds right now to justify, but some day I'll get one.

I actually almost bought one at startup of their kickstarter campaign launch, but back off because of its lack of durability spects. There is a ton of electronics and my job sites are not known to be gentle places for any tool. Yes there is a lot of areas that it would come in handy and ease the brain strain, but using my brain is what gets me the 5 star reviews and health bank account.

Doesn't seem like too much to ask for them to stick a 50ft laser measuring tool in this thing on top of all the other bells and whistles. We already have digital tape measures. They use lasers. Why doesn't this also have a laser, besides the one for marking?

  • @bwselectronic

I would say it could be very useful if you used a tape measure a lot. I do building maintenance but it could be over a month in-between the times I use one. If I were a carpenter it would be more justifiable for me.

LOL I feel ya. When I first saw it, I was NOT convinced. I can’t help but see it as a tape measure that’s just ridiculously big and covered in unnecessary buttons. But the deeper you look, the more interesting it gets. I’m really anxious to see what pros do with it when it finally arrives.

Half of the features are for people that don't know how to use a tape measure, the other half are for people that don't know how to manage a job. Sounds perfect! I see this being attractive to maker nerds, and engineers doing home projects. To expensive compared to a regular tape measure and a note pad for a real job site. 1m drop ? $200+.....Maybe when they add like a design app that lets you import measurements, Give me the green line projector and an automatic tape. I like the digital display but unless i can measure to the back of the unit also, it won't work for corners.

This oughta be in Sharper Image any day now. The world has lost its mind. This contraption is a perfect example of useless innovation. This tool is for selling, not for use. We are busying ourselves improving upon the improvements, to the point of absolute absurdity. Tape measures are simple for a reason. Quick, accurate, and thirty bucks. Some things are improved upon just because they can. But I guess there are a lot of tech-nerd woodworkers and carpenters out there? Nah. There’s not… or I guess there’s like a hundred of them apparently.

I think that I will long be in the market for a more rugged measuring tap, can easily go though 4 a year, Milwaukee, dewalt, or fat max. But I see real potential for jobs estimating, especially saving measurement as you walk through with a client. It’s annoying when you take one then get distracted before you can write it down. And not everyone can afford a staligrafer
