I have to admit I started watching this series because I love land cruisers, but I stayed because I have learned something useful in every video so far. I can't believe I never thought to strap my spare tire upright in the back like that!
I used the 3rd row seat mount and fabed up an upright spare tire mount. Put it on the drivers side so it wouldn’t be in the way when looking behind when driving
Go to Harbor Freight, pick up the double garage door screen, each panel is about 8' X 8', it has magnets on 1 edge (middle), use it to screen the back of your rig so you can leave hatch and back windows open at night, cut other panel to cover door windows. Bug free fresh air sleeping.
You could cut the reservoir in half, weld in some exhaust pipe to make it taller for more volume. I've done it on a few FJ60 power steering reservoirs.
Take the reservoir apart (It is serviceable so it does come apart) and gut the OEM filter inside of it and just run the separate inline filter that you have already. that should give you a bit more capacity and flow with less restriction.
Looking forward the Onyx videos coming up Nate! You asked so my opinion on the back setup would be to swap the spare & bed to the opposing sides. Reason being is better visibility with the tire directly behind you as opposed to Looking over /around it. Looks like a very capable rig capable though!👍👍
Nate on my full size bronco I used some reflective insulation roll to create privacy curtains for sleeping in the back. I used some clear Velcro adhesive circles to attach it and all the curtains roll up snugly for storage.
I think I would put a barrier behind the front seats to stop all the stuff from coming forward into the area where the driver is in a rollover. There are nylon webbing that would work well. The sleeping platform looks good but a simpler sleeping arrangement would simply be a exped mega mat self inflating mattress. These mattresses are awesome and inflate to 4”. You can get their small pump to inflate it to the hardness you want. Awesome build.
I did a sleeping platform in my 80 and camped 4 seasons in it with the family probably 30 nights per year until the kiddo got too big to share the back with us. Took the scouts winter camping on Rainier up at Paradise- they slept in snow caves, I slept in the Cruiser 😂. Best overland rig I ever owned.
It's so cool seeing a youtuber messing around on washington trails. While I've never been to Evans Creek, my older brother used to go out there to mess around in his 84 Bronco. I wonder if you guys ever ran into each other out there. 04 would be kind of close to when he was out there. He also used to go do the mud drags, my favorite picture was him up against a lifted cadillac. I had a 78 bronco that ended up leaving my possession due a bad trade deal but I dreamed of taking to a place live Evans and just cruising around.
I absolutely love being able to sleep in the vehicle. I've been doing it for a while with my Titan, and the camper top/sleeping platform in the bed. And for the past 2 years in my Excursion.
Hey get the window screens, you can slide them over the door frame, shut the car door and tool down the window to get fresh air but no bugs, they are awesome!! I use them sleeping in my 4 runner
Steering reservoir - Find a section of exhaust pipe similar size. Cut off the top of reservoir, extend up with pipe and weld top back on... Great build and videos!
Little tip that might be useful, I have a very very similar setup in my 100 series and I get into bed from the drivers seat, can take my boots off leave them on the drivers floor and then climb through easier and don’t have to close the rear door, then in morning can climb into drivers seat put boots on and step out, no mess, no shoes on bed, all easy
Perfect timing. I was just looking at my 79 F-150 lifted Supercab longbed 4x4, with BBF 460 with 34's that needs more assist than the power-steering pump and gearbox it has. I was looking at the tie-rod shock absorber and wondering how to install a ram there to lessen the stresses on the pitman arm and single shear linkage. Perfect! thank you. PS, its not a rock crawler but more a over-lander camper with a rear hitch mounted motorcycle carrier.
I agree with you on sleeping in the vehicle. I set up all of my rigs so I can do this (accept for my 2 door/short wheelbase rigs). It’s especially nice on those windy desert nights!
I like how you build a plywood platform to sleep on and store things under. More like something an average person could build in the back in their car without spending a ton on a roof too tent or fancy organization drawer system but still cool.
Hey bud, with that spare, put a anchor point on right side up high for the strap. Now pull the tyre to the side and be a lot safer. Anchoring strap to floor means the top side is very unstable and 20-30 kilos of tyre flying around in an accident or rollover is not cool. As for being a bigger lad, pop the rear top door open and have an extension for the raised board so you can sleep with head or feet further out. A little canvas work will allow you to seal it in for bogs or wildlife.
Another great build Nate. I am a hardcore Jeep guy who would never even think about a different vehicle but after seeing how this has turned out I’m thinking I could build me one of these. lol. Thanks again for another great video.
It's one of my favourite 80 Series builds ever. I will be pinching a few ideas for my 80 Series, Nate. & the sleeping platform is good. Cheap, simple & sufficient for a temporary solution
I had a JK with a 4BT in it awhile back and it kept puking steering fluid. I got a reservoir from an F150/Expedition and worked great for that application. Love the build!
I believe we did but Bleepy has more viewers and big Truck thing going on. While Rudy got his daddys viewers and also the big truck build goin on. You know!
@@MacsSpecialitiesMotorsports Yeah I agree but still disappointed! I did see what the others built and do not think they were anywhere close to the DL build.
Man I just got “done“ with a three weekend long header back exhaust build on my ‘91 80 series. What a slog it was. Got metal in my eye that sent me to the eye Dr for removal, and smashed the hell out of my right thumb. Also crawling under a car a few hundred times with out a lift is not as comfortable as it was when I was 20. It’s a bit loud, have a different muffler showing up, but it’s finally done 😅. Now I just have to replace the header gasket again after I destroyed it, and do the hundreds of other things this old girl needs 😂 happy to see you enjoying your Cruiser. Can’t wait till mine is more functional.
I love me some Evans's Creek! The first time i went out there was when i was a cub scout camping out there and saw people 4x'ing! I think that's what started my offloading bug and having 4x4s. I really like that roof rack it really brings the look together and will be really useful!
Great build, and looking forward to seeing where you take it from here. Was hoping that you were going to either go up or down the rocky section of 519.
Is that where the rocks are? I couldn't remember where anything was out there. I wasn't even sure what trails we were on, lol. First time back at Evans in years...
Yeah, 519 has a "waterfall" of sorts that flexes rigs out pretty good. Probably, the hardest obstacle at Evans. Up or down is fun. Took a guy from SoCal up there a few weeks in a nicely equipped JKUR on 37s. He said he liked rocks, it freaked him out a bit to start, but he was pumped after he ran through it.
Glad to hear you get to keep this rig in the end, was afraid all teams would be forced to give the vehicles to OnX or something. Been watching you since the bleepinjeep days building low buck diesel truck series and remember you talking about wanting to do a Landcruiser build when you started the Disco build and now it's great to see you finally have it and it's yours.
It would cost OnX way to much money to keep all the vehicles. Shipping, storage, then add in the maintenance for customized rigs. Liability issues more than likely would keep them from selling the trucks to recup extra cash. If anything there could be a one year contract clause allowing OnX to retain the vehicle for shows, promotions and advertisements.
Kartek makes an aftermarket finned reservoir with filter attachment and is pressure relief valve ready that have seen a few guys use in some Toyota SUV’s with the “busier” engine compartments.
Love your channel Nate. Something to consider on the next build like this - put the spare tire behind the driver, not passenger. It’ll keep it out of your line of sight when looking over your right shoulder.
your correct, gease gives life. our company vans have 300k miles and stock ball joints on the steering and a arms . they get greased every 3 months since 1996
I can never decide whether doing an indoor/outdoor carpet or just vinyl flooring would be best for my off-road setup. With as much mud as we have in the southeast, being able to wipe it clean (even in the middle of a trip) comes in super handy.
Hey Nate you should fab some some bug nets for the rear sliding windows! We slept in the back of our cruiser and needed the windows open for air, but then the skeeters would come in!
Personally i just built my own power steering reservoir. I'm running a ZJ with the 5.2 and swapped the pump to the wj aluminum body pump from the v8 model. Made an enormous reservoir that's actually part of an aluminum airbox in the front of my rig. Only thing i had to do was weld a piece of tubing to the pump because i needed something bigger. It actually turned out pretty cool.
One thing that would be cool for you to showcase is bolting the camp-build down into the vehicle. Always something I do that seems to get overlooked a lot, but would probably be a great idea in a legit rock crawler too.
Dude this thing is coming along amazing bro!!! Giving all kinds of ideas for my 80 series…keep hoping to see this in person on the trails so many questions…
KRC power steering makes some nice power steering reservoir tanks. They mostly do stock car racing parts, but they have a number of remote reservoirs made of aluminum - they can get a little spendy. Speedway Motors also has some that are cheaper. Power steering coolers can be made out of a loop of steel line (Cadillac used to do this in the 70s), they don't have to be full on coolers. You can make a loop that goes around the perimeter of the radiator if space is tight.
Hello from the coast right outside of Galveston, Texas. At 55y/o with my bilateral bad knee's and lumbar back issues. No way I could climb up into that bed to lay down without waking up the whole forest..lol Do luv your Lexus build. Way to go. Iv'e really enjoyed all the videos. I was thinking. You should construct a removable, maybe 3/16" plate, metal hinged folding step that you could hook onto the drivers side rock slider when in camp, so that you can crawl into that drivers side back door to lay down. Would be a lot easier then going in from the cargo hatch, spinning around and then laying down.
Nate, consider getting some kind of a 1/2 tent to attach/hang off the back. That way, you will have some privacy/space to change clothes while standing up. If not that, at least get some kind of screen or net to go over the back. Otherwise, you're going to get eaten alive by bugs at night.
Im from the future, you should replace the altenator.😂
Lol. Luckily, I had mine professionally replaced on the side of the road 😁
Finally the time traveller from The Sun newspaper in the UK has been proven right.
🤣
LOL. Thats funny
Just checked mine in my 80. Needs doing.
I have to admit I started watching this series because I love land cruisers, but I stayed because I have learned something useful in every video so far. I can't believe I never thought to strap my spare tire upright in the back like that!
100% this got my attention for the same reason.
totally!!
I used the 3rd row seat mount and fabed up an upright spare tire mount. Put it on the drivers side so it wouldn’t be in the way when looking behind when driving

Redhead steering gear. Nice. Right around the corner from you too! Great video Nate.
Every build you do seems to be my favorite but this one is definitely above and beyond. Thanks for sharing all the amazing things you build
Thanks man! I'm glad you appreciated this 80 as much as I do. Such a cool platform to work with
Love it! This build rocks
Sweet Nate Love this rig 22:30 hope you win Brother will continue to vote
You could cut the reservoir in half, weld in some exhaust pipe to make it taller for more volume. I've done it on a few FJ60 power steering reservoirs.
I camp out of the back of Rovers now days. It's the only way I camp. Doesn't matter what the weather is like. I love it.
Super beefy hydro assist nice 12:41
Congrats on saving the rear window and 1/4, Evans is famous for blowing those up.
Sherpa rack looks amazing
Take the reservoir apart (It is serviceable so it does come apart) and gut the OEM filter inside of it and just run the separate inline filter that you have already. that should give you a bit more capacity and flow with less restriction.
Dude, great suggestion! I didn't know these had an internal filter, so I appreciate the info 🙌
More like a gauze plate..
The Land Crusier Turbo Commercial 😂 man the good old days 6:40
Looking forward the Onyx videos coming up Nate!
You asked so my opinion on the back setup would be to swap the spare & bed to the opposing sides.
Reason being is better visibility with the tire directly behind you as opposed to Looking over /around it.

He’s got a pump.
Raingler for the webbing barrier

I really love how the Land Cruiser turned out! Fantastic job and amazing build as always 👍🏻
Thank you!
Simple, gets the job done, it's perfect.
This car will drive forever!!
I hope so! I love it 🤘
It's really amazing, what you can do. Is because you are hard working man.
As always it a pleasure watching you're content from Australia 🤙
I love this build, I will totally enjoy this if you wanted it to go to someone!
I absolutely love being able to sleep in the vehicle. I've been doing it for a while with my Titan, and the camper top/sleeping platform in the bed. And for the past 2 years in my Excursion.
Great content as usual sir. You showed a perfect mix of Vehicle wrenching, overland/camping fab, and just the right amount of trail / testing.
Hey get the window screens, you can slide them over the door frame, shut the car door and tool down the window to get fresh air but no bugs, they are awesome!! I use them sleeping in my 4 runner
I'm now actively looking for a T80/LX450 because of this series... I was originally going to go with an XJ, but damn this convinced me.
Great video series - thank you!
I hadn't seen the channel before the onX challenge. I can't believe you didn't get more votes. Your attention to details and the rig was awesome!
Steering reservoir - Find a section of exhaust pipe similar size. Cut off the top of reservoir, extend up with pipe and weld top back on... Great build and videos!

Great Rig Nate, really liked this build. Can't wait to see the ZUK!!!!!!
It was so cool seeing this in person (on the road at least) passed you just outside Norwood Co. on my way to the Rim Rocker trail back to Moab
Damn, I love your 80 build man!
Thank you! I'm having a great time with it 🤘
Perfect timing. I was just looking at my 79 F-150 lifted Supercab longbed 4x4, with BBF 460 with 34's that needs more assist than the power-steering pump and gearbox it has. PS, its not a rock crawler but more a over-lander camper with a rear hitch mounted motorcycle carrier.
Nice! That should be pretty straightforward to get setup with a ram 👍
Remember to put up some mosquito netting for all the openings so you can have a nice breeze and sleep comfortable. And a small AC fan
I definitely want to do this. I just need to figure out a way to mount the screen so it doesn't look half ass...
This has been such a great series to watch how Nate builds an 80!
I agree with you on sleeping in the vehicle. I set up all of my rigs so I can do this (accept for my 2 door/short wheelbase rigs). It’s especially nice on those windy desert nights!

Awesome man! Trust me, I can relate. I love Jeeps! But there are alot of other great rigs out there. The 80 series is definitely one of them 👍
DRT pro sticker is so dope. It just TRD backwards.
Cool build, it proves to everyone the capabilities of the Land Cruiser chassis
It’s such a rad rig!
Thanks for continuing this build. We're really interested, hopefully you have the time
No problem 🤘. Thank you for watching and for the positive comment 🙌
That’ll be good, add an air mattress and some bins under the bed and you’ll be good. I’d put the tire in the rear bumper for extra interior room
Best build yet! Can’t wait to see what else you do
Thank you!
It's one of my favourite 80 Series builds ever. I will be pinching a few ideas for my 80 Series, Nate. & the sleeping platform is good. Cheap, simple & sufficient for a temporary solution
Like the budget friendly approach you have with build, keep them mods coming on the 80 series!
I'll be building my 80 very much like this (when I finally find it). Love this build. Low and bad ass. It's perfect.
Thanks man! Good luck in the search
The Aussie HJ61 (my cruiser) Ad was so good :D
Absolute love this build, just like all the others!
Thank you!
Always fun to watch the master fabricator work. I've always liked the low-lift big tire look.
The tailgate makes a killer compartment too
I had a JK with a 4BT in it awhile back and it kept puking steering fluid. I got a reservoir from an F150/Expedition and worked great for that application. Love the build!
Love the build.
Get some pool noodles as the summer ends, cut and attach them to the seat belt bar to make it more plush to put your feet on or against.
I can't believe DL Nation did not come out in force and dominate the OnX voting!
Awesome build series. I look forward to it every week
Put a pool noodle around the seatbelt bar and wrap it with a cloth and velcro wrap. Then you could prop your feet up on the bar.
Cool project. Probably more like to shear knuckle studs from a kickback from the 39s versus the hydro steering.
use exhaust pipe to increase the size of the reservoir...cut and stretch the factory reservoir works great

Great job dude. Love the cruiser build. Got my vote 🤘
How about a flip out platform on the tailgate and a "tent" around the flipped up glass...that would give you another 2' of sleeping platform.
That would be cool!
Your build is amazing.
So glad you are really happy with the build and adding it to your fleet. That says something about how capable your build was and the platform is.
I love me some Evans's Creek! The first time i went out there was when i was a cub scout camping out there and saw people 4x'ing! I think that's what started my offloading bug and having 4x4s.
I really like that roof rack it really brings the look together and will be really useful!
I like it Nate 👍👍
Thanks! 👍👍
Great build!. Hydro assist is in my list of “to do” stuff

Great Video as always brother! You have yet again inspired me to tackle my own hydro assist set up. Keep Killing!!!!
Good! Have fun dreaming up and building the perfect system 🙌
2 words: Suzuki Samurai. When are we going to see the return? Looking forward to the rest of the build

This is one of my favourite builds ever. Congrats 🎉

Breaking out the Carpentry and wood tools sweet 1:45
Yea with those stock knuckles I’d plan on checking torque often. Maybe couple times a day on a hard wheeling day
This build has made me want to do this someday (after a lot of learning lol)
Nice Truck !!❤
Nothing better like sleeping inside your rig
Just keeps getting better 🤙🏼
Thank you 🙌
